Soundgarden’s final album is now being mixed, marking a significant milestone in the completion of the iconic grunge band’s last studio project. The record, which has been in development for several years, features eight tracks containing vocals from the late frontman Chris Cornell.

The band had been actively working on new material with Cornell in the period leading up to his tragic death in 2017. Following a lengthy legal dispute with the Cornell estate regarding the rights to unreleased recordings, the group has moved steadily toward finalizing the project. By the end of 2025, the band members indicated they were nearing the completion of the album.

In a recent appearance on the Let There Be Talk podcast, drummer Matt Cameron provided an update on the status of the record. While a release date has not yet been set, the focus is currently on the technical process of mixing the tracks to bring the project to fruition. “We’re just gonna try to get this thing mixed, get it over the finish line, and then hopefully we’ll have a better idea what’s gonna come next,” Cameron explained. “We’re just taking it one step at a time ’cause it’s been kind of a long process just to get to here.”

Cameron noted that the eight tracks featuring Cornell’s vocals represent the extent of the available material from that era. However, he suggested that the band’s future might not end there. “I think that that’s pretty much all there is with vocals,” he remarked. “We had some instrumentals left over that [guitarist] Kim Thayil wants to work on. So maybe we’ll do some new stuff together, which would be fine by me.”

The progress on this final album follows a period of reflection for the band, including their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame last year. As the group works to honor their legacy, fans remain hopeful that this final collection will serve as a fitting tribute to one of rock’s most influential voices.
