Watch the ‘Play Jaja Ding Dong’ guy from ‘The Story Of Fire Saga’ present Iceland’s points at Eurovision 2021

The ‘Play Jaja Ding Dong’ guy and unlikely star of Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga read out Iceland’s results at last night’s (May 22) 2021 Eurovision Song Contest – see footage below.

Prior to the ceremony, which saw Italy emerge victorious and the UK fail to pick up a single point, Hannes Óli Ágústsson was confirmed to appear in character as Olaf Yohansson at the event.

  • READ MORE: Eurovision 2021 was a giddy reminder of the joys of live music (and that no one likes us)

In Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams’ 2020 Netflix film, the pair performed the original song ‘Jaja Ding Dong’, and were consistently hounded to do so by Yohansson.

For his appearance last night, Yohansson was asked to read out Iceland’s scores for other nations in the competition.

Asked to reveal who Iceland gave their 12 points to – the highest amount available – he replied: “Our 12 points go to ‘Jaja Ding Dong’!”

See footage below.

Ahead of last night’s Eurovision, Iceland’s entrant Daði Freyr spoke to NME about his thoughts on the Fire Saga film and the virality of the ‘Play Jaja Ding Dong’ guy.

“I met him like seven years ago or something when I was boom operating for an Icelandic movie,” Freyr told NME of Ágústsson. “I can’t remember if we had a conversation then, but he seems like a really nice guy.”

He added of the film: “I think Icelanders think it’s funny. It’s also not a very accurate portrayal of Icelanders! We come off as very aggressive and very incest-y, which is maybe not the way we want to be portrayed, but nobody really cares. Icelanders are very sarcastic, so we see through it.”

Watch the full interview below.

Reviewing last night’s Eurovision Song Contest, NME wrote: “Like this month’s Brit Awards, the whole thing adds up to a welcome reminder of the joys of live performance on a grand scale. Graham Norton’s affectionate irreverence is comfortingly familiar; past winners including Duncan Laurence and Lordi pop up during the interval; and the Dutch presenters do a thoroughly decent job.”

Bedford-born musician Tom Grennan has revealed he has a new collaborative single titled ‘By Your Side’ on the way, made with none other than Calvin Harris.

It’ll be the first time Grennan has linked up with Harris, although the British hitmaker is no stranger to musical collaborations. Earlier this year, he teamed up with Ella Henderson for their single ‘Let’s Go Home Together’.

The single appeared on his March album ‘Evering Road’, along with other cuts ‘Little Bit Of Love’, ‘Amen’, ‘Something Better’, ‘This Is The Place’ and ‘Oh Please’. The record won Grennan his first UK Number One album, debuting with over 17,000 chart sales.

Discussing the album prior to its release at the 2020 NME Awards, Grennan said it was a “thank you note” following a breakup.

“I’ve gone through a breakup,” he said. “It’s not a breakup album, but it’s a thank you note, it’s a sorry note, it’s not [trying to] cry about it, it’s a ‘here we fucking go’.”

Harris is yet to release any new music this year, having dropped ‘Over Now’ with The Weeknd last August. He also began releasing music under the moniker Love Regenerator in 2020, including tracks ‘Live Without Your Love’ featuring Steve Lacy, ‘Hypnagogic’ and ‘CP-1’.

Watch the trailer for new Kiss documentary, ‘Biography: KISStory’

Kiss have shared the trailer for a new documentary about their career called Biography: KISStory – you can watch it below.

Directed by D.J. Viola, the documentary is said to chronicle the band’s 50 year career with founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons said to reflect on their extensive careers in the film.

Other featured artists in the film include Dave Grohl and Tom Morello.

The film, which is four hours in length, will air via A&E over two evenings in the US on June 27 and June 28 from 9-11pm ET/PT. A UK release date has yet to be confirmed.

You can watch the trailer here:

A description of the documentary reads: “After 50 years of rocking and rolling all night and partying every day, the #1 Gold Record selling band of all time, KISS, shares their story of success before finally smashing their last guitar and extinguishing the fire-breathing demon.”

Elaine Frontain Bryant, EVP and head of programming for A&E said: “Through the ‘Biography’ lens, we are able to give fans a backstage pass to a two-night event that honors the legacy of the rock icons behind KISS.”

“This documentary event is a special tribute to a one-of-a-kind band and the incredible Kiss Army fanbase that has idolised them for generations,” she added.

The new project is separate to the band’s upcoming biopic Shout It Out Loud, which looks likely to air on Netflix.

Elsehwere, Kiss’ Gene Simmons has doubled down on his recent comments on why he believes that rock is dead.

“The point is, yeah, rock is dead because if we play the game from 1958 until 1988, which is 30 years, you had Elvis, The Beatles, The Stones, Pink Floyd, and on and on and on,” Simmons said.

“And you can go to the heavy part of it, which is Metallica, Maiden, if you want to put KISS in there, that’s fine. AC/DC, on and on and on. Even U2, Prince, Bowie, Eagles. And then you get to disco stuff, and Madonna, and that stuff, and Motown, of course. And then from 1988 until today, who’s the new Beatles?”

A Crowdfunder to restore the creepy puppet from Interpol’s ‘Evil’ video is nearing its total

A GoFundMe campaign to restore the creepy puppet from Interpol‘s ‘Evil’ video is close to reaching its target.

The puppet, which appeared badly beaten in the original video, is said to be in an even worse state 17 years down the line according to organiser John Kolbek.

“He’s had a rough 17 years. Being passed around as a Halloween ornament, to ending up in someone’s storage shed. The good news is, he’s found a new caring home, the bad news is, he’s pretty messed up. BUT with your help, and the help of Lunas Puppets, we can fully restore him back to his former glory,” he wrote.

Many fans have been contributing to its restoration which is now close to reaching its $3,000 (£2,119) target. You can contribute to the campaign here.

Last year Wu-Tang Clan‘s RZA and Interpol frontman Paul Banks announced that they were reviving their project Banks & Steelz.

“Well, that’s something that happened during quarantine, me and Paul have been sending each other tracks,” RZA told NME at the time.

“We got a song that we just finished right before this movie campaign, called ‘The Pains of Love’. And I think in Covid, the song is funny, because the pains of love is something that we’re willing to endure.

“And that’s people who are locked up with each other and can’t go out for months. Can you endure that? The joy of love? Well how about the pain of love?”

Banks & Steelz first formed in 2013, and released the album ‘Anything But Words’ in 2016.

T.I. appears to address sexual misconduct allegations in new song

T.I. has appeared to address the numerous allegations of sexual misconduct that he and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Harris have faced in recent months on his new song ‘What It’s Comes To’.

It was reported earlier this week that the rapper (real name Clifford Harris) and Tiny are both under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) over fresh allegations of sexual assault and drugging after a woman filed a police report last month relating to an alleged 2005 incident.

A second police report with allegations of sexual assault was also filed earlier this month with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVPD). The department subsequently told the New York Times that this alleged 2010 incident fell outside the state’s statute of limitations for the crime and that the case was closed as a result.

T.I. and Tiny’s lawyer Steve Sadow denied the allegations in a statement and said that the “Harrises have not spoken to or been contacted by the LAPD, the LVPD or, indeed, any member of law enforcement from any other jurisdiction in the country”.

“Even assuming the story in the Daily Beast is close to accurate, it appears the LAPD ‘accuser’ has chosen once again to remain anonymous, thereby preventing us from being in a position to disprove or refute her allegations – or even examine them,” he added. “Meanwhile, although we now appear for the first time to have the name of an ‘accuser’ who supposedly filed a police report with LVPD, we have absolutely zero details about her or her claim.”

These developments follow on from the multiple allegations of sexual abuse and coercion against T.I. and Tiny that have emerged this year, which the pair have continued to deny.

A post shared by TIP (@troubleman31)

In a new song that was released overnight, T.I. has appeared to make reference to the allegations that have been made against him and his wife this year.

“Go put yo face and reputation on it / These kind of claims deserve more than anonymous provocative conversation, don’t it?” he raps on ‘What It’s Comes To’. “Willing to face whatever consequences for his vision … while I’m up against some lyin’ ass bitches / Damn, this is what it’s come to.”

NME has contacted T.I.’s representatives for comment on whether his lyrics in ‘What It’s Comes To’ reflect the recent allegations he and Tiny have been subject to.

The woman who filed the LAPD police report, whose identity has been kept anonymous, is being represented by lawyer Tyrone A. Blackburn, who is also representing 11 alleged sexual assault victims of T.I. and Tiny. In February it was reported that Blackburn had contacted multiple state and federal prosecutors in the US seeking a criminal investigation into the couple.

The following month, Blackburn said that six more people had come forward to him with allegations of sexual assault against T.I. and Tiny. “If I was a prosecutor, I’d have brought charges already,” he said.

Blackburn is also representing the couple’s former friend Sabrina Peterson, who made the first allegations of sexual abuse and coercion against T.I. and Tiny back in January/

T.I. and Tiny “emphatically” denied Peterson’s allegations in a subsequent statement. In February, the couple’s lawyer further called the allegations “baseless and unjustified”.

Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour Has A Song For Every Mood

The biggest pop song of the year begins like a diary entry. "I got my driver's license last week," Olivia Rodrigo sings, then quickly adds another person to the narrative: "Just like we always talked about / 'Cause you were so excited for me / To finally drive up to your house." By now, we know that the story ends with her passing the street and leaving the subject of the song in the rear view. But we also know the addictive engine that fuels her No. 1 hit "Drivers License" — highly personal songwriting coupled with excellently crafted song structures — is the same one powering Rodrigo's entire career, as heard on her impressive debut LP, Sour, out today (May 21).

With help from her co-writer Dan Nigro, Rodrigo splits open her rock-tinged songs with details as real as what you'd send in a text ("reruns of Glee," "crying on the floor in my bathroom") and the occasional strategic F-bomb — lessons she picked up from her idol Taylor Swift. The songs themselves remain easy to digest; Sour's tracklist suggests an Inside Out-style approach to feelings with "Happier," "Jealousy, Jealousy," "Brutal," and more telling you what you need to know in title alone. Yet there's a sly sophistication in Rodrigo's work, informed by her approach to disciplined songwriting. "I really think that more or less forcing yourself to write a song sometimes is really beneficial," she told MTV recently. "I think you can't rely on those lightning bolts of ideas to strike you all the time."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F272yLpKQU8

That said, Sour has enough lightning bolts to fill Zeus's quiver. From blistering pop-punk to more measured folk and pop-rock elements, Rodrigo spends its 35 minutes wisely spanning the sounds that speak to her, leveraging them to speak for her as well. "My dream is to have it be an intersection between mainstream pop, folk music, and alternative rock," she said ahead of the album's release. Below, we break down Sour, track by track and mood by mood.

  • "Brutal"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hM2U8cb8lhI

Listen to it when you're feeling: over it.

Key lyric: "Who am I if not exploited? / I’m so sick of 17 / Where’s my fucking teenage dream?"

Over a crunching rhythm that sounds like Elastica doing Elvis Costello, "Brutal" kicks off her album with an explosive pop-punk number making a declarative statement plagued with self-doubt: “It’s brutal out here.” She’s talking about the perils of being 17, on the cusp of legal adulthood but still treated like a child. Sour is a collection of angst, and nothing primes the listener for what’s next better than Rodrigo getting a few things off her chest.

  • "Traitor"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tsu2oeZJgo

Listen to it when you're feeling: replaced.

Key lyric: "It took you two weeks to go off and date her / Guess you didn’t cheat but you’re still a traitor"

The three characters in this song feel quite lived in, showcasing how Rodrigo can capture the dramatic stakes of a narrative by revealing it piece by piece. As she expresses the unique sting of having her own romantic replacement lined up in front of her, this stormy ballad really gains momentum near its conclusion. As her voice starts to ascend, so do the stakes.

  • "Drivers License"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmDBbnmKpqQ

Listen to it when you're feeling: ready to zoom away from heartbreak.

Key lyric: "Guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about me / 'Cause you said forever, now I drive along past your street"

The massive resonance of "Drivers License" (and its eight weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart) is due in part to its blending of complex emotions. Is the narrator shattered by love's end and plagued by a future that no longer exists? Yes. Is she ready to leave all that behind and accelerate into her next chapter? Also yes. It's the kind of song where "I still fucking love you" shifts its power the more times you listen. In the end, it's just you in the driver's seat, completely free to go anywhere.

  • "1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-HfMiue7-k

Listen to it when you're feeling: lost and powerless.

Key lyric: "It’s always one step forward and three steps back / Do you love me, want me, hate me? Boy, I don’t understand"

One might expect the song that actually interpolates Taylor Swift — the gentle loping piano rhythm from Reputation's "New Year's Day" — to be the most Swiftian composition on the album. But the interpolation instead allows Rodrigo to find her quietest moment of self. As a new composition, "1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back" finds the intimacy of a voice note, complete with bird noises in the background, as Rodrigo questions her love’s motivations as much as she interrogates her own reasons for staying put.

  • "Deja Vu"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cii6ruuycQA

Listen to it when you're feeling: like you've been replaced.

Key lyric: "So when you gonna tell her that we did that, too? / She thinks it's special, but it's all reused"

While "Drivers License" cruises with its hands at 2 and 10, "Deja Vu" changes lanes without signaling, then speeds off into the night. It's a song for anyone who's ever realized that what they thought was a unique kind of love was likely just one in a series. While that could be harrowing, Rodrigo's version sounds downright psychedelic; she knows it's better to laugh than give anyone the satisfaction of a sad face.

  • "Good 4 U"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNi_6U5Pm_o

Listen to it when you're feeling: angsty.

Key lyric: "I've spent the night crying on the floor in my bathroom / Just over the fact that I really don't get it / But I guess good for you"

At first listen, you'd be forgiven for thinking this scrappy pop-punk number was the work of another artist. But even amid a cloud of power chords, Rodrigo's singular voice rises like smoke to deliver her most biting kiss-off yet. Don't sleep on the Billie Eilish-inspired bridge, either.

  • "Enough for You"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqRXiQkyxvI

Listen to it when you're feeling: like you need to find yourself again.

Key lyric: "I’d say you broke my heart but you broke much more than that / Now I don’t want your sympathy, I just want myself back"

On this just-past halfway mark, gentle acoustic plucking is the only accompaniment to Rodrigo mapping out a story about a love who left her after she seemingly did everything right. The haunting breaks in her voice reveal this as a cautionary tale of not changing too much for someone else and losing yourself in the process. It's also one of only two songs on which Rodrigo gets full writing credit.

  • "Happier"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQFmRXgeR-s

Listen to it when you're feeling: generous, but not too generous.

Key lyric: "I hope you’re happy / But not like how you were with me"

Here's the other sole Rodrigo composition, characterized by careful piano arpeggios and a waltzing rhythm that feels like sneaking through a house after everyone’s asleep. Like a lot of Sour, "Happier" is a monologue, one where she chooses her words extra carefully, though her moments of discontentment creep up in the clever production behind via muted claps, the kind that make it feel like maybe we’re not hearing the entire story.

  • "Jealousy, Jealousy"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-9gQjUZMm0

Listen to it when you're feeling: like you don’t deserve what you have.

Key lyric: "All I see is what I should be / Happier, prettier, jealousy, jealousy"

After a few songs without a proper backbeat, “Jealousy, Jealousy” pounds in like an elephant, letting Rodrigo work out some feelings of imposter syndrome over a real groove. There's not much sonic overlap, but I couldn’t help but think of Sheryl Crow’s “If It Makes You Happy,” another ode to the chaos wrought by getting what you want. With a bassline that’ll linger in your head, “Jealousy, Jealousy” means that, contrary to her fears, you won’t be thinking about anyone else.

  • "Favorite Crime"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyX_LL9nWSE

Listen to it when you're feeling: deliriously smitten.

Key lyric: "Everything we broke and all the trouble that we made / But I say that I hate you with a smile on my face"

Like an ode to a crush in reverse, "Favorite Crime" looks back fondly on the destruction wrought in the wake of a crumbled love. It’s not sad and it’s not quite happy, either. Instead, the glowing track captures the lingering fizz of dysfunction as the end result of love. Thanks to a pleasant set of acoustic chords and Rodrigo’s excellent pipes, this one is ready for both the coffee shop and pop radio.

  • "Hope Ur Ok"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLlsmB1D4Q0

Listen to it when you're feeling: empathetic.

Key lyric: "I love you / I hope that you’re OK"

Because we’ve reached the end of a highly diaristic LP, we have to close on a series of character vignettes that look outward rather than in. So, Rodrigo paints portraits: a childhood marching-band drummer whose father abused him and a classmate ostracized for who she loved. Then she sends a message of solidarity and love and support to them and to everyone listening; as she does, the echoes of her three biggest influences (Swift, Eilish, and Lorde) swirl into sonic view, marking a key moment that recognizes her past while forging ahead boldly on her own. The next move is all hers.

Mikel Arteta urges Arsenal to move on following Spotify founder Daniel Ek’s failed takeover bid

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has urged the club to move on after Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek’s proposed takeover bid was rejected last week.

Ek, who is a lifelong Arsenal fan, confirmed on Saturday (May 15) that his reported £1.8bn offer to buy the Premier League club had been rejected by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, who represent the club’s owners Stan and Josh Kroenke.

  • READ MORE: If Spotify’s CEO buys Arsenal, it might make for a very different game

Ek said in a tweet that his bid included “fan ownership, representation at the board and a golden share for the supporters”, but that it was knocked back by the Kroenkes as, Ek claims, “they don’t need the money”.

While it was reported last weekend that the Spotify co-founder remains interested in buying the club, Arsenal manager Arteta has told reporters today (May 21) that they should now all move on.

Mikel Arteta says it is time to move on from Daniel Ek's proposed takeover of Arsenal "for the benefit of the club". pic.twitter.com/4QAgUIgVXb

— Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) May 21, 2021

“I really hope so, because I think it’s very clear where the owners are standing,” he said (via Sky Sports News). “I think I’ve been clear to give my view on the situation.

“Just for the benefit of the club, which I think is the only interest of anyone who supports the club, we are aiming to get the unity and togetherness that we need to be back where we want [to be].”

Ek’s takeover bid had received the support of Arsenal legends Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp, with Henry saying that the Kroenkes – who have long been the subject of scrutiny from many Arsenal fans, which intensified further last month due to the club’s brief involvement in the European Super League – “now need to listen”.

Watch Troye Sivan, Tate McRae and DJ Regard perform ‘You’ on ‘Fallon’

Troye Sivan, Tate McRae and DJ Regard have teamed up to perform their collaborative single ‘You’ for the first time on television.

  • READ MORE: Troye Sivan: “Ultimately my dream did come true, which is crazy”

Appearing on last night’s (May 20) episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the three artists gave a sultry rendition of the pop track, with dark lights and neon accents giving the performance a club-like feel.

The trio were unable to perform in the same room due to living in different countries, but seamless production and the large ‘YOU’ projected behind them led to the illusion that they were.

Check out the performance below.

The track officially arrived last month, after Sivan first teased it on his TikTok account. It’s a dancey tune, with lyrics referencing still being caught up on someone well after the relationship has ended.

‘You’ marked Sivan’s first release of the year, following on from the release of his 2020 EP ‘In A Dream’. He also released a rework of the EP’s single ‘Easy’, featuring Kacey Musgraves and Mark Ronson.

As for McRae, the 17-year-old singer recently released her second EP titled ‘Too Young To Be Sad’, the follow up to 2020’s ‘All The Things I Never Said’. She performed a livestream for the recent EP earlier this month, with an NME review calling it “a high energy spectacle with pop star ambition”.

Regard recently earned a BRITs nomination for Best British Single with ‘Secrets’, his collaboration with London singer RAYE. They lost out to Harry Styles, who took home the award for ‘Watermelon Sugar’.
