Cardi B Is The Only One Allowed To Have Acrylics In Ballet Class

Much of the rapper Cardi B’s early success might be traced to the VH1 reality series Love & Hip Hop: New York, which brought her singular personality to audiences around the country. Her drive and undeniable flow have brought from that point to the top of the charts, nailing hit after hit, from “Bodak Yellow” to the slickest song of the summer, “WAP.” Now, at the height of her game, she’s making her return to the small screen — the smallest screen, in fact.

Cardi B launched her new, eight-episode reality series Cardi Tries on Wednesday (December 17). As its title suggests, the show will follow the rap star as she challenges herself Simple Life-style with sports, stunt car racing, sushi-slinging — basically, anything she hasn’t tried before. The first episode takes Cardi to a dance school in Los Angeles helmed by the legendary actress and choreographer Debbie Allen, where she takes a spin (and a plié) at ballet class. "Have you done ballet before?" Allen asks Cardi at one point, to which the rapper responds, "I used to be a stripper.”

Hilarity ensues from there, with plenty of the customary Cardi-isms fans have come to expect from the Grammy-winning artist. To prepare our minds and souls for new episodes airing every Thursday through February 4, MTV News recapped everything we learned watching the first episode of Cardi Tries.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CI52sc7JTLM/
  • Even Cardi B struggles with choreography.

This was a shock to hear! A travesty, even — that Cardi, who singeth of making it drop, from the top, simply can’t dance. I wouldn’t believe it had she not admitted it herself at the outset of the episode. “I got two left feet,” she says. “I don’t have no rhythm.” She’s joined by members from her glam team, including makeup artist Tokyo Stylez and wardrobe stylist Kollin Carter. “She’s not lying about the two left feet,” Carter affirms. “She won’t have rhythm for, like, three weeks. And then the last week is like, rhythm just pops from out of nowhere.”

  • Ballet shoes feel like condoms on your feet.

That’s how Cardi describes the sensation of slipping her toes into the flexible flats backstage at the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, though which of the two is more protective, the shoes or their rubbery counterparts, is unclear. You wouldn’t catch me hitting the subway in those flimsy babies, nuh uh! They don’t have red bottoms — well, in some cases, they could ostensibly be considered “bloody shoes,” given the medium’s physical strain — but they’ll do for dance class.

  • There are apparently no ballet classes in the Bronx.

Well, at least according to Cardi B. Prior to her music career taking off when she signed to Atlantic Records in 2017, Cardi was a stripper, and she remains proud of that history, even appearing in the 2019 film Hustlers alongside Jennifer Lopez. But it seems she didn’t have much formal training prior to that gig. When Allen asks if she’s ever used first position — a basic ballet stance where dancer poses with their heels together — while working the pole, Cardi responds in kind. “You know, Debbie Allen, I think that there was no ballet class in the Bronx,” she jokes. A quick Google search reveals more than a few.

  • Ballet class will teach you better French than Emily in Paris.

For real, how much does Emily Cooper actually learn throughout her internship at Savoir? Yes, I can say, "Oui," too, girl. By challenging herself with this new experience, Cardi learns a thing or two about another culture, as well. Allen explains that plié means to bend, a translation that serves as an astute name for a move that refers to bending and straightening the knees. “It looks so simple and beautiful,” Cardi says of the move, “but this is difficult as hell!"

  • Debbie Allen has soft hands.

Storied dance instructor and Grey’s Anatomy star Debbie Allen has mentored the stars of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Hamilton, and beyond; she’s traveled the world as an ambassador of the art, and at 70, she’s still molding its future. But she also, we discover, has very soft hands, as Cardi points out while the instructor shows her a few additional basic moves. I wonder what moisturizer she uses!

  • The only person allowed to have acrylics in ballet class is Cardi B.

Cardi B is always rocking an extravagant set of acrylic nails, to the point that her nail artist, Jenny Bui, was herself the subject of a Drag Race “Snatch Game” skit. But when Cardi arrives at Allen’s studio equipped with royal blue stilettos, the instructor is quick to let her know that it’s simply not practical. You could take an eye out with those things! Fortunately for Cardi, Allen made an exception. "My nails give me a character,” Cardi says. “I could look like a bum, right? But my nails show that I got money."

  • Cardi B can (maybe) drive now.

So, it's unclear. A lot of fuss was made when it was revealed that Cardi B, who recently purchased her husband Offset a Lamborghini for his birthday and has plenty of luxury cars of her own, couldn't drive. Come on, she grew up in the Bronx; what New Yorker can drive? But a look into Episode 2 shows Cardi B hitting the racetrack to take a stunt car for a ride with Michelle Rodriguez of the Fast & Furious franchise. Seems dangerous — guess we'll have to tune in next week to see what happens.

Billie Eilish Washes Her Dream Car And Ponders Existence In Revealing Doc Trailer

In three days, Billie Eilish turns 19, and yet she's already become one of the most celebrated artists of her generation. It might be hard to remember a time before her Grammys sweep, before every new song drop was An Event, before she became a veritable auteur crafting her own visual identity.

Luckily, filmmaker R.J. Cutler spent time documenting that very space in Eilish's life. And the efforts of his time behind the scenes with her — a new doc called Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry — look to provide those intimate details, the kind you might expect from a global musical sensation who recorded a No. 1 album from her brother's childhood bedroom.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7VHYBkCbF4

In the trailer, released today (December 15), we see Eilish pass her driver's test and look forward to cruising around alone ("That's what's important," she says from behind the wheel). We see her admit to still sleeping in her parents' bed "because I'm scared of monsters in my room." And we see her washing her first car/dream car, a Dodge Challenger, in her driveway. That's all pretty ordinary teenage stuff, with a few details tweaked.

But what makes the footage so compelling is how it's cut with a clip from a live performance, surely shot from before she was selling out arenas across the globe, where she tells the audience, "You guys need to be OK, 'cause y'all are the reason I'm OK. OK?"

This is all interspersed with clips from Eilish's youth, as well as her big night at the 2020 Grammys earlier this year, in a tale that promises to tell the entire story of Billie Eilish... so far.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CXaLlY2-7g

Cutler, the director, has plenty of experience in the realm: He's helmed docs on subjects as diverse as John Belushi, Dick Cheney, and Vogue magazine. See for yourself what he reveals about Eilish when the film hits theaters and Apple TV+ on February 26.

In the meantime, watch the revealing new trailer above.

Jesy Nelson Leaves Little Mix: ‘I’m Ready To Embark On A New Chapter’

Jesy Nelson, one-fourth of superstar British girl group Little Mix, announced that she's departing the group after nearly a decade. In a touching note posted to social media today (December 14), Nelson wrote that "being in the band has really taken a toll on my mental health," and announced she's "ready to embark on a new chapter in my life."

"I'm not sure what it's going to look like right now, but I hope you'll still be there to support me," she wrote.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CIySd94HlyZ/

Nelson began her note by listing the various accomplishments Little Mix was able to achieve since its inception on The X Factor singing competition show, including selling out the 20,000-capacity O2 Arena in London and winning awards — and thanking their fans for making it all possible. "You have always been there for me to support and encourage me and I will never ever forget it," she wrote.

But because of the strain on her mental health, she wrote, she's exiting Little Mix to "reinvest" in taking care of herself "rather than focussing on making other people happy."

"I need to spend some time with the people I love, doing things that make me happy," she wrote.

At the end of her note, she thanked "everyone involved in our journey," taking time to once again thank the fans, as well as her three group mates: Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock. "I hope that you'll continue to fulfill all of your dreams and keep on making music that people love."

https://twitter.com/MTVNEWS/status/1293929727112208386

Since forming in 2011, Little Mix have released five albums, the most recent of which, Confetti, dropped in November and featured the single "Holiday." The group also hosted this year's MTV EMA, though without Nelson, who missed it due to illness.

Thirlwall, Edwards, and Pinnock shared the announcement on Little Mix's group account as well, passing along their complete support for their departing group mate. "This is an incredibly sad time for all of us but we are fully supportive of Jesy. We love her very much and agree that it is so important that she does what is right for her mental health and well-being," the joint message read.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CIySkxPBfTn/

"We are still very much enjoying our Little Mix journey and the 3 of us are not ready for it to be over," they continued. "We know that Jesy leaving the group is going to be really upsetting news for our fans. We love you guys so much and are so grateful for your loyalty and continued support of all of us. We’re looking forward to seeing so many of you on tour."

Little Mix's scheduled spring 2021 tour kicks off in April with a pair of shows in Dublin and runs through the United Kingdom until the end of May. Find those dates here.

“Drake’s not the only musical Jew from Canada,” a description on the Foo Fighters’ YouTube account accompanying the cover reads. “Tonight we feature a Canadian rock G-Dess… who coincidentally grew up around the corner from a Canadian Jewish rock G-D (G-ddy Lee). Straight out the mikvah, here’s Peaches!”

You can watch Grohl and Kurstin take on ‘Fuck The Pain Away’ – with a little help from Peaches herself – below.

Grohl and Kurstin are covering eight songs by Jewish artists to mark this year’s Hanukkah celebrations.

Foo Fighters are set to return with a new album next year. ‘Medicine At Midnight’ will be released on February 5, 2021 and will include the recently released single ‘Shame Shame’.

Eddie Van Halen’s cause of death has been confirmed

Eddie Van Halen’s cause of death has been confirmed, two months after the rock icon died.

The musician died on October 6, 2020, at the age of 65, following a long battle with cancer.

  • Eddie Van Halen, 1955 – 2020: a colossus who turned guitar solos into a firework display

Van Halen’s death certificate, which has been obtained by TMZ, cited his immediate cause of death as a cerebrovascular accident, or a stroke. He also had several underlying causes, including pneumonia, the bone marrow disorder myelodysplastic syndrome and lung cancer.

The certificate also listed a number of “other significant conditions”, including skin cancer on his head and neck and an irregular heart rate.

Van Halen’s body was cremated 22 days after his death and his ashes have been given to his son Wolfgang.

In a recent interview, Wolfgang revealed that his dad had been told he had six weeks to live in 2017 when he was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. After receiving the diagnosis, he went to Germany for treatment.

“Whatever the fuck they do over there, it’s amazing, because I got three more years with him,” Wolfgang said.

When Van Halen’s death was confirmed in October, stars from across the world of rock paid tribute to the musician. At this year’s Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony, he was honoured by Slash, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello.

“Eddie Van Halen was the Mozart of our generation,” Morello said during the moving tribute. “He had the kind of talent that maybe comes around once a century.”

Watch Timothée Chalamet impersonate Harry Styles and Soundcloud rappers on ‘SNL’

Timothée Chalamet impersonated Harry Styles and a Soundcloud rapper during his appearance on Saturday Night Live last night (December 12).

The actor hosted the latest episode of the long-running US sketch show, which also featured Bruce Springsteen as the musical guest.

During the show, Chalamet took part in a number of sketches. In one, he appeared as a guest on a talk show hosted by Dionne Warwick (played by Ego Nwodim). “Miss Warwick, you’re a legend,” Chalamet said in an English accent as he sat down with Nwodim’s Warwick. “I can’t believe it, I’m such a big fan.”

When Nwodim asked where she knew him from, he replied: “Maybe you know my song ‘Watermelon Sugar’? I think it’s just about summer but some people think it’s about oral sex.” Melissa Villaseñor also appeared in the sketch as Billie Eilish, while Pete Davidson played Machine Gun Kelly. Watch it below now.

In another sketch, Davidson and Chalamet played Soundcloud rappers called Guaplord and Smokecheddathaassgetta. During an XXL Rap Roundtable hosted by Nwodim as Nunya Bizness, the pair joined Questlove and Punkie Johnson playing Queen Latifah to discuss the year in hip-hop.

However, Davidson and Chalamet’s characters drew the ire of the rest of the panel, answering Nwodim’s questions with a series of “yeets” and “skrrts”, and citing their influences as “The Fall Out Boys” and an advert featuring rapping hamsters. Watch that sketch above now.

Meanwhile, Chalamet’s planned Bob Dylan biopic was postponed in October due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The film’s cinematographer Phedon Papamichael explained the period-specific settings would be difficult to execute properly with restrictions around the virus in place.

Kanye West faces two class-action lawsuits from his Christian opera workers

Kanye West is facing two class-action lawsuits from workers at his live Christian opera Nebuchadnezzar, detailing various grievances surrounding their treatment and pay on the show.

The rapper is accused of owing “unpaid wages”, failing to pay minimum wage and overtime, and refusing to provide appropriate meal and rest breaks when he hosted a series of shows at The Hollywood Bowl last year.

Kanye premiered Nebuchadnezzar in November 2019, with a second Christian opera, Mary, following a month later.

Documents obtained by The Blast reveal that Kanye and promoters Live Nation are being sued by multiple workers on the production, alleging “unpaid wages, continuing wages, damages, civil penalties, statutory penalties and attorney’s fees and costs.”

According to new details obtained by Vice, the first lawsuit stems from crew members hired for Nebuchadnezzar, while the second arrives from the performers themselves. The legal action could reportedly amount to $1 million in damages against the rapper.

Both claim that Kanye misclassified the people he hired as independent contractors, rather than employees – meaning the rapper avoided thousands of dollars in taxes, as well as Californian labour laws that would require him to provide workers with basic privileges.

Kanye and his team are yet to respond to the allegations.

Meanwhile, Pusha T announced this week (December 9) that Kanye is set be a producer on his forthcoming album.

During a conversation with manager Steven Victor on Instagram Live, Pusha T said both Ye and production duo The Neptunes had been enlisted for the LP.

The former US presidential candidate featured on Pusha T’s previous album, ‘Daytona’, in addition to producing it, with the record released through G.O.O.D., of which Kanye is founder and Pusha T is president.

Elton John calls Damon Albarn a “British jewel” because of his diverse music catalogue

Elton John has hailed Damon Albarn a “British jewel” due to the Blur frontman’s diverse catalogue of music.

The ‘Rocketman’ singer recently collaborated with Albarn on ‘The Pink Phantom’ for Gorillaz’ latest project ‘Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez’.

Speaking in a new interview, John praised Albarn for throwing himself into projects that interest him, rather than focusing on what might be deemed more commercially successful.

“Damon really is special,” John told Record Collector magazine. “He’s someone who I really, really admire.

“When you see what he’s done, when you compare him and Blur with Oasis – including the last Blur album [2015’s ‘Magic Whip’], which is a masterpiece – and then you look at what he’s done outside of Blur, he’s just done so many different things.”

He continued: “And he’s just finished an opera that just opened in Paris.

“I think he’s a British jewel because he just does what he wants and, for him, success is just working with great musicians like Tony Allen, just doing things that interest him.

“I mean, for fuck’s sake, he did an album with Bobby Womack! So this is a mind I admire because he’s always looking forward.”

Earlier this week, Albarn said the UK government’s response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic shows they have “no empathy with the arts.”

Speaking to PA News ahead of a series of virtual Gorillaz gigs next week, Blur and Gorillaz frontman Albarn said: “This present government has no empathy with the arts whatsoever and sadly that is a really important part of British culture. It is an essential part of British culture.

“We live in a pretty fucking miserable country at times and we need our arts to uplift us. It should be part of the prescription for our national health.”

Meanwhile, Elton John has claimed that he owns more than 120,000 CDs and 15,000 vinyl records.

The 73-year-old singer explained that the entirety of his vast collection of music remains in his house, rather than in storage, so that he can maintain regular access to it at all times.

Neil Peart’s iconic Rush drum kit sells for $500,000 at auction

The drum kit played by Rush drummer Neil Peart between 1974-1977 has sold at auction for just over $500,000 (£379,000).

  • Read more: Neil Peart obituary, 1952-2020: The Professor of drums who weaved fantasy into rock

Peart’s iconic chrome Slingerland set, which he used for recordings and live performances, went under the hammer as part of Bonhams’ Music Memorabilia auction last week, ending on Thursday (December 10).

The coveted kit, which features dual blue heads printed with Rush’s logo and Neil Peart’s name, as well as chrome-wrapped Tom-toms with an original head signed by Peart himself, was expected to fetch somewhere between $104,000 (£77,695) and $157,000 (£117,290).

That estimation, however, was shattered as the drummer’s hardware was sold for just over half a million dollars — $500,312, to be exact.

As the Bonhams listing explained, the kit was purchased by Peart in 1974 from Toronto’s Long & McQuade music store shortly after he joined the iconic band.

Peart used the kit for his first performance with the band on August 14, 1974 and it acted as his main drum set until 1977.

Albums such as ‘Fly By Night’, ‘Caress Of Steel’ and ‘2112’ were all recorded with the kit, alongside the band’s first live album ‘All The World’s A Stage’ during Rush’s three-night residency at Toronto’s Massey Hall.

A decade later, the Rush drummer donated the prized kit for a Modern Drummer giveaway. Winner Mark Feldman later sold the kit to the person who put it up for auction last week.

Peart, who was widely considered to be one of the greatest drummers of all time, passed away in January after a lengthy battle with brain cancer.

Leading tributes from famous fans, Dave Grohl called Peart “a kind, thoughtful, brilliant man.”

“Today, the world lost a true giant in the history of rock and roll,” he said. “An inspiration to millions with an unmistakable sound who spawned generations of musicians – like myself – to pick up two sticks and chase a dream. A kind, thoughtful, brilliant man who ruled our radios and turntables not only with his drumming, but also his beautiful words.”

He added: “I still vividly remember my first listen of ‘2112’ when I was young. It was the first time I really listened to a drummer. And since that day, music has never been the same. His power, precision, and composition was incomparable. He was called ‘The Professor’ for a reason: We all learned from him.”

Listen to Grimes’ new song ‘Delicate Weapon’ from ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ soundtrack

Grimes has shared a new song from the Cyberpunk 2077 soundtrack – listen to ‘Delicate Weapon’ below.

Last month, it was revealed that the likes of SOPHIE, Shygirl, HEALTH, Let’s Eat Grandma and more would all be contributing to the game’s soundtrack under aliases.

They all join Run The Jewels, who released their song ‘No Save Point’ for the game last month. The hip-hop duo will appear in-game under the pseudonym ‘Yankee and the Brave’.

  • READ MORE: ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ review: a brilliant role-playing experience that rises above its controversial marketing

As well as releasing the new song, Grimes is a character in the game under the alias Lizzy Wizzy that players can interact with.

Listen to the shimmering ‘Delicate Weapon’ below.

Reviewing Cyberpunk 2077, NME wrote: Despite all the controversies it’s found itself embroiled in, this is a game with a surprising amount of heart. While The Witcher 3 redefined what players expect from an open world, this RPG eight years in the making pushes modern gaming to its limits rather than forging a bold new future.

“Cyberpunk is essentially Deus Ex meets Grand Theft Auto – a familiar feeling experience with one element that separates it from its peers, its unparalleled role playing. Thanks to the freedom afforded by its richly crafted dialogue choices, its consistently brilliant voice acting and the sharp script, Cyberpunk excels as a narrative-driven video game – even if it may not be the medium-redefining classic many hoped for.”

Grimes released her latest album ‘Miss_Anthropocene’ back in February. The album made number 48 in NME’s list of the best albums of 2020.

Such is her refusal to be pigeonholed, after the blissful art-pop of 2015’s ‘Art Angels’, Grimes’ only option was to take a sharp left turn,” said the review.

“Her fifth album was a much denser, more claustrophobic effort that gleamed like dark chrome, reflecting the looming climate crisis and turmoil in her personal life as her relationship with Tesla CEO, Elon Musk put her firmly under the celeb spotlight. This was Grimes trying to make sense of her changing world.”
