George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police about two weeks ago and his death has sparked protests all across the United States. It is clear that people want real change and it seems like the demonstrations have been working. While this may be true, there are still many out there who disagree with the protests and think the George Floyd response has been overblown. CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman seems to follow this particular line of thinking as recently, he dismissed the Floyd dialog as “FLOYD-19.”
Of course, Glassman was saying this in reference to COVID-19. The CrossFit CEO thinks that COVID-19 has been overblown by the media and by saying “FLOYD-19,” he is taking yet another dismissive tone. These comments landed Glassman in quite a bit of hot water and recently, Reebok revealed that it would be withdrawing its sponsorship of future CrossFit events.
“Recently, we have been in discussions regarding a new agreement, however, in light of recent events, we have made the decision to end our partnership with CrossFit HQ,” Reebok explained in a statement. “We will fulfill our remaining contractual obligations in 2020. We owe this to the CrossFit Games competitors, fans and the community.”
This is a significant move as Reebok and CrossFit have been synonymous with each other over the years. Regardless, Reebok is taking a huge stand here and it’s pretty commendable.
