Over the years, there have been plenty of artists who have compared themselves to Tupac Shakur. The young rapper has gone down in hip hop history as a poet, innovator, social activist, and rap icon. He was only 25-years-old when he was gunned down in Las Vegas following attending a Mike Tyson bout, and because his life was cut short, the world will never know his full potential. A quote attributed to the late rapper caught the attention of Tory Lanez who said that he and Tupac are more alike than people think.

“I feel like honestly, and n*ggas is gon’ be like, ‘Yo, you’re bugging,’ but I feel like—remember when Pac was like, ‘I may not change the world, but I can spark the idea in the brain of the person who will?'” Tory told For the Record. “I feel like, deadass, like that ‘spark’ was me, my n*gga. I feel like there’s a lot of similarities between me and Pac. Not saying like, I’m Pac. I hate when n*ggas say that. I’m not trying [to be him.] I’m me, my n*gga, but I do love Pac and I do feel like there were similarities in the fact that when you really think about it, I say whatever the f*ck I want to say. N*ggas hate me for that. Or they love me for it. I move how I want to move. I really punch your f*ckin; face off in real life. It’s been proven. This is a proven fact.”

“I’m really just me, but I’m a happy guy,” he continued. “I don’t portray to be the most f*ckin’ gangster n*gga. I get love everywhere I go because I show love everywhere I go.” He said that their “bluntness” is a character trait that both he and Tupac emulate which makes them alike. Yelawolf‘s name has been popping up in the greatest light in recent times. Royce Da 5’9″ recently took a few shots at his former Shady labelmate on The Allegory song “Overcomer.” Although Royce never elaborated too specifically on the issues between himself and Yela, he did simply say it fell under the category of disrespect. Chances of its origin story being revealed in the future is unlikely but it seems like the two have moved past it.

“He was a friend of mine,” Royce told Rob Markman about Yelawolf on For The Record. “I felt disrespected by something that transpired, and that was just the way I dealt with it. I felt like I could’ve dealt with it a few different ways. I chose not to, because I don’t want to promote negativity. I don’t want to engage in silly, public, back-and-forth beefs. And I did feel like I needed to hold him accountable.”

Although Royce did take their feud to wax, he explained that the two of them did end up finally having some sort of means of communication. “He reached out,” Royce said. “Oh yeah, after that he reached out. We didn’t speak, but he reached out after that. I don’t wish him nothing but the best. I don’t wish any ill will on him, or anything like that. But I took offense to what he did and I moved on. It’s not the first time.”

The hype surrounding Jadakiss‘s forthcoming album Ignatius has been a well-crafted rollout. The New York rapper has been making the media rounds to discuss his upcoming record that was initially slated for release on Friday, February 28. There was even a song, “Hunting Season” with Jadakiss featuring Pusha T that made its way to TIDAL, but almost immediately it was taken down. Pusha T would later come forward and say that they decided not to move forward with the track’s release at this time because of Pop Smoke’s murder, and since the song talks about hunting fellow rappers, it didn’t seem appropriate.

During a chat with For The Record, Jadakiss explained that both he and Pusha didn’t even talk about taking down the song but they were on the same page about its removal. In fact, Jadakiss delayed the release date of his album altogether. “Yeah, we held back to pay respect for Pop Smoke, the untimely passing and demise of Pop Smoke,” said Jadakiss. “We actually pulled that song back and we pulled the project back as well [by] a week. Instead of February 28, the album is gon’ come out March 6. The song, the video is very artsy but it’s a little crazy so, just to pay respect and shed light on that whole…you know.”

“Even with Kobe and his daughter and the memorial and all that, it just didn’t seem like the right time to release the song or the visual,” Jadakiss added. “Or the project, so we just pulled it back for a week. The song will be on the album…just after stuff dies down a little we’ll let the visual out.” Watch Jadakiss chop it up with For The Record below.

While The Lox were willing to collaborate on the track, which also featured Beanie Sigel and Sauce Money, they had just landed from a flight and requested if they’d be able to drop off their bags. Unfortunately, Hov wasn’t patient enough to be willing to fulfill their request as Jada recalls:

“So we’re like, ‘That’s cool. We’re gonna go home, put our luggage (away).’ And they were like, ‘Nah, (Jay Z) wants you to come there right now.'” Jada continued, “We ain’t got carry-ons. We got big shit we had to check. So that put us on edge a little, ’cause we always lookin’ at it like, ‘If (Hov) just landed, would he just come to the studio with his luggage? No!’ But that was a good edge.”

Jadakiss remembers The Lox obliging and Sheek Louch and Beanie Sigel laying down their verses the first evening. Styles P recorded his contributions to the track the following day, but still held some animosity towards Jay for having them come straight to the studio after a tiresome flight. The Ghost kicks off his “Reservoir Dogs” verse rapping:

“I don’t give a F*CK who you are, so F*CK who you are
I don’t care about a pretty bitch, watch or a car
I don’t care about your block and whoever you shot
I don’t care about your album and whenever it drop
I don’t care about your past if I did I woulda asked”

Jadakiss told Rob Markman:

“He was going at Hov on there. Hov was like, ‘Well, it sounded like you talking about me on it.'”

The “Show Discipline” rapper also revealed that he moved back the release of his album, Ignatius (2020), in the wake of Pop Smoke and Kobe Bryant’s deaths. He also spoke on Ignatius being a memorial album for Ruff Ryders’ very own, Icepick Jay and stated that he removed his single “Hunting Season” featuring Pusha T out of respect for the recently slain 20-year-old rapper.
