Italy has been among the European countries hit the hardest from Coronavirus. As the country remains on lockdown with over 160,000 cases and 16,000 deaths related to COVID-19, it seems that supplies are running low for certain families. According to The Guardian, the Mafia has intervened during these times, delivering essential goods to families in need.
Known members of the Mafia across Italy have been seen in videos bringing goods to families in some of the most impoverished regions of the country including Campania, Calabria, Sicily, and Puglia. Though it's a sweet gesture at face value, anti-mafia investigator Nicola Gratteria said these quick deliveries can be used for leverage among vulnerable locals.
"For over a month, shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs have been closed," Nicola Gratteri said. "Millions of people work in the grey economy, which means that they haven’t received any income in more than a month and have no idea when they might return to work. The government is issuing so-called shopping vouchers to support people. If the state doesn’t step in soon to help these families, the mafia will provide its services, imposing their control over people’s lives."
Italian official Luciana Lamorgese stated that the Mafia might use this to take advantage of the poor to "recruit people to its organization." University of Oxford professor of criminology Federico Varese said that these "are not gifts" but favors that should be paid back.
"Mafia bosses consider their cities as their own fiefdom," Gratteri continued. "The bosses know very well that in order to govern, they need to take care of the people in their territory. And they do it by exploiting the situation to their advantage. In the people’s eyes, a boss who knocks on the door offering free food is a hero. And the boss knows that he can then count on the support of these families when necessary, when, for example, the mafia sponsors a politician for election who will further their criminal interests."

“I killed her because she gave me coronavirus,” De Pace bluntly told investigators after being brought in for strangling Lorena Quaranta.
Police who arrived at the scene were met with Quaranta, 27, dead and De Pace on the floor with his wrists cut. De Pace was raced to the Sicilian hospital where the couple worked and was saved by their coworkers.
Both De Pace and Quaranta had tested negative for the virus. Prosecutors say De Pace’s reasoning is “nonsense.”
“She was a doctor who was working hard to save others. It’s such a tragedy,” a source told The Sun.
Before her death, Quaranta wrote about the difficulty of battling the virus on Facebook: “Now more than ever we need to demonstrate responsibility and love for life. You must show respect for yourselves, your families and the country.
”You must think and remember those that dedicate their lives daily to looking after our sick.”
Italy is one of the worst-hit countries from the coronavirus. Over 13,000 people have died due to COVID-19 and there have been 128,948 confirmed cases.
Worldwide, there have been over 1.2 million confirmed cases and over 69,000 deaths.

U.S. Officially Has More Coronavirus Cases Than Italy & China
The United States surpassed both Italy and China in Coronavirus cases.
Yesterday, we reported on how the United States was posed to overtake two of the countries that have been hit worse by the Coronavirus pandemic, that is, Italy and China. Well, shortly after that, it did indeed happen.
This morning, alongside news that even U.K’s Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has tested positive for Coronavirus, we also received news that the United States is officially ahead of Italy and China with confirmed Coronavirus cases. Around the world, countries are doing their best efforts to flatten the curve, that is to say, stifle the amount of new cases on a daily basis and slow the spread of the virus and disease in order to put less of a burden on the economy and perhaps more importantly, people.
Where China has a reported 81,000 cases of COVID-19, and Italy has approximately 80,000, United States is said to have accumulated 82,000 confirmed cases of the deadly virus. This is according to a report from John Hopkins University, where they’re tracking the grand tally of cases. The U.S. has reported 1,200 deaths due to the Coronavirus– 400 of those in New York, whereas Italy has an astounding 8,200 deaths.
A record-breaking amount of Americans have applied for unemployment amid all of this, as we reported yesterday those numbers reached an all-time high– 3.3 million Americans.
We’re hoping that everyone is staying safe out there, and staying at home as much as possible, as we all do our part to help quell this pandemic.
U.S. Passes Italy & China With Most Confirmed COVID-19 Cases In The World
According to new data, the United States is now the leader in most confirmed cases of COVID-19, but still has fewer deaths related to the virus.
The spread of Coronavirus continues as the world has taken extensive steps to quarantine its citizens. We’ve watched as celebrities have come forward to confirm their diagnoses while stories of healthy individuals dying from the virus are reported. As people are exercising extreme precautions to combat the spread of the deadly virus, it’s being reported that the United States now leads Italy for the most confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the world.
Italy has captured attention as the country was overwrought with ill citizens. The country was being watched by other countries and used as an example of how quickly a pandemic can spread and affect an economy. Now, John Hopkins University has compiled data that shows the United States has 82,000 confirmed cases, outnumbering Italy and China combined. According to the Huffington Post, following the U.S. are “Spain, France, Germany and Iran.”
While the States may have more cases, they are plenty of other countries that have more COVID-19-related deaths. There have been approximately 1,000 people in the U.S. who have lost their lives to COVID-19 and at the moment, HP calls New York City the “epicenter” of the United States. For now, the World Health Organization, along with government leaders, continue to advise people to stay home, practice social distancing, and follow precautionary measures to ensure cleanliness.
U.S. To Surpass China & Italy In Number Of Coronavirus Cases
The United States is predicted to experience a harsher coronavirus outbreak than China or Italy as the number of cases and deaths continues to rise.
The United States is on its way to amassing more cases of coronavirus than either China or Italy in total , as the number of confirmed cases and deaths continues to rise across America. Just yesterday (March 25th), the World Health Organization warned that the U.S. could become the new centre of disease. As of today (March 26th), according to Worldometer, the U.S. is only 428 infections behind China’s overall total: China has reported a total of 81,285 infections throughout its outbreak, while the US has 80,857. Among China’s 81,285 cases, 74,051 people have recovered, while 3,287 have died. There are only 3,947 active cases in China at the moment, a starkly low number compared to the U.S.’s 77,830 active cases. In the U.S., only 1,864 patients have recovered, and 1,163 have died.

Italy, which was hit hardest by the pandemic, has recently begun to stabilize. Italy has had a total of 80,589 cases at the time of writing, only 35 more than the U.S. The European country, however, has seen the number of new cases decline or remain flat for several days. They currently have 62,013 active cases, with 10,361 recovered and 8,215 dead.

A major key difference between these countries’ approaches is that China and Italy have imposed nationwide lockdowns in order to “flatten the curve.” However, Trump has yet to invoke such a measure throughout the U.S., instead making highly unlikely promises about reopening businesses and relaxing quarantine practices around Easter (April 12th). Lockdowns could take two to six weeks to take noticeable effect, so if drastic measures aren’t taken soon, the U.S. will be on course to surpass China and Italy’s numbers of cases and deaths.
Coronavirus Victims Over 80 In Italy Will Be Left To Die
As coronavirus continues to spread rapidly throughout Italy, elderly patients over the age of 80 will be denied access to intensive care if capacity is reached.
Italians aged 80 or older with coronavirus will effectively be turned away by hospitals, should the pandemic in Italy reach a point that this becomes necessary. According to The Telegraph, a document prepared by a crisis management unit in Turin, the capital of the Piedmont region that has been deeply affected, outlines the protocol for determining which patients will be eligible for intensive care if hospital space and resources are at a shortage. The coronavirus continues to spread all over Italy, and the country is preparing for the worst possible scenarios. The document reads: “The growth of the current epidemic makes it likely that a point of imbalance between the clinical needs of patients with COVID-19 and the effective availability of intensive resources will be reached. Should it become impossible to provide all patients with intensive care services, it will be necessary to apply criteria for access to intensive treatment, which depends on the limited resources available.”

“The criteria set out guidelines if the situation becomes of such an exceptional nature as to make the therapeutic choices on the individual case dependent on the availability of resources, forcing [hospitals] to focus on those cases in which the cost/benefit ratio is more favorable for clinical treatment,” it continues. “The criteria for access to intensive therapy in cases of emergency must include age of less than 80 or a score on the Charlson comorbidity Index [which indicates how many other medical conditions the patient has] of less than 5.”

“I never wanted to see such a moment,” Luigi Icardi, a councilor for health in Piedmont, admitted. “[The document] will be binding and will establish in the event of saturation of the wards a precedence code for access to intensive care, based on certain parameters such as potential survival.” More than 1,000 people in Italy have already died from coronavirus, with the death toll rising daily. Over 15,000 people are infected. “We want to arrive as late as possible at the point where we have to decide who lives and who dies,” said Roberto Testi, president of the coranavirus technical-scientific committee for Piedmont. “The criteria relate only to access to intensive care – those who do not get access to intensive care will still receive all the treatment possible. In medicine we sometimes have to make difficult choices but it’s important to have a system about how to make them.”

Italy Quarantines 16 Million People Due To Coronavirus Outbreak
Italy is taking extreme precautions due to the coronavirus.
An outbreak of the novel coronavirus has forced Italy to quarantine approximately 16 million people. Last month, government officials of the highly-populated area of Italy’s Lombardy region were forced to quarantine approximately 50,000 people after confirmed cases of the virus sky-rocketed from five to more than a hundred in less than three days. The Italian coronavirus outbreak allegedly began in the city of Codogno after a 38-year old man, known as ‘patient zero’ had been diagnosed with the disease. Now, Italy has become Europe’s most contaminated country on the continent with government officials taking extraordinary precautions to stop the spread of the disease. Marco Di Lauro/Getty Images
According to BBC, the coronavirus has struck the country’s Northern and Central provinces resulting in stricter quarantine methods in the region. Under these temporary regulations, citizens in the Lombardy region and the 14 other Central and Northern provinces will need special authorization to travel throughout the country.
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has taken command closing schools, gyms, museums, nightclubs, sporting events, and other establishments across the country. Highly-populated cities including Milan and Venice are currently under quarantine orders affecting approximately 16 million Italian citizens. Conte released an official statement to the Italian media advising people to stay indoors, stating:
“There will be no movement in or out of these areas, or within them, unless for proven work-related reasons, emergencies or health reasons,” Conte told the public. “We are facing an emergency, a national emergency. We have to limit the spread of the virus and prevent our hospitals from being overwhelmed.”
This past Saturday (March 7), a total of 5,833 confirmed cases flood the country with a total of 230 fatalities caused by the virus have been confirmed including a reported 36 deaths in 24 hours. Italy’s Chief of Staff for the Italian Army, Salvatore Farina, is among those affected and is currently ‘self-isolating.’
The United States is currently taking extra precautions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in major metropolitan cities like New York and Los Angeles as well. Check out BBC‘s official report declaring a quarantine of 16 million people in the video provided below.

With tens of thousands of visitors daily, the Lourve is the most popular museum in the world. Last year, 9.6 million visitors alone came from abroad.
“We are very worried because we have visitors from everywhere,” said Andre Sacristin, a Louvre employee and union representative. “The risk is very, very, very great. It’s only a question of time.”
Fans who lined up outside, hoping to get in, were let down Sunday morning. “We waited for about 3 hours before giving up,” one would-be patron told The Associated Press. “It was incredibly disappointing.”
The closing comes after news that neighboring Italy has become the epicenter for the epidemic in Europe. There are over 1,600 coronavirus cases and 34 deaths in the country so far. In the last 24 hours, cases have risen 40% and five more people have died.
’’This acceleration was expected, unfortunately,” Giovanni Rezza, director of the infective illness department at the National Health Institute, told the AP.
Saturday, the first death as a result of the coronavirus was reported in the United States. A woman in her late 50s in Washington State passed, but no details were given.
"Mission: Impossible 7" Halted Due To Italian Coronavirus Outbreak
“Mission: Impossible 7” shut down production due to the Coronavirus outbreak in Italy.
Mission: Impossible 7 shut down production due to the recent coronavirus outbreak in Italy. Tom Cruise and the entire Mission: Impossible 7 movie crew are currently in Italy to film the seventh installment of the blockbuster franchise. While Cruise might have been able to do the impossible a total of six times, exposing himself to the disease that has taken the lives of over 2,000 people since its discovery in Dec. might not be the mission he wants to perform.

According to Deadline, Italy has 219 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, the largest number outside of China, Japan, and South Korea. Production for Mission: Impossible 7 was slated to begin shooting in Venice, but since the Italian government has basically locked down the country and canceled all major events, movie production was forced to do the same.
Paramount Pictures released a statement voicing their concerns about the safety of their employees, saying:
“Out of an abundance of caution for the safety and well-being of our cast and crew, and efforts of the local Venetian government to halt public gatherings in response to the threat of coronavirus, we are altering the production plan for our three-week shoot in Venice, the scheduled first leg of an extensive production for Mission: Impossible 7. During this hiatus, we want to be mindful of the concerns of the crew and are allowing them to return home until production starts. We will continue to monitor this situation, and work alongside health and government officials as it evolves.”
While some alternate publications have been reporting that Cruise was in Italy during the outbreak, Deadline has confirmed that Cruise was not in the country when production shut down. With a vaccine reportedly created, hopefully, humanity will be able to contain the coronavirus before it becomes any more than a pandemic.
