Netflix's Top Boy is getting ready to kick off the second season. Following the success of the Drake-executive produced Netflix series' return, they are already getting ready to start filming the new season. A tweet from their official account made the announcement along with the news that the original cast would reprise their roles. "We’re back. TOP BOY Season 2 begins filming this spring. @AshleyWalters82, @TheRealKano, @onlymikes_ and @LittleSimz will return as Dushane, Sully, Jamie and Shelley. Stay tuned," the tweet reads.
Top Boy became one of the hottest series on Netflix is 2019. The show initially ran for two seasons before getting canceled. Eventually, Drake intervened and got it back to Netflix. The rapper even confirmed a few months before an official statement came out that the show would return.
Prior to heading to Netflix, the show already grew in popularity in the UK and abroad. At the show's debut, Drake explained that it was important to bring these characters back because they had an important story to tell.
"I got attached to the characters, the story really drew me in. I think there's so many parallels between Toronto and London -- obviously, we don't have the same accent but we speak the same. So it reminded me of people that I grew up with or guys that I know and situations that I've witnessed. So I felt super connected right away," he said. "Then it disappeared on me."
Keep your eyes peeled for season 2.
Drake Confirms Netflix’s “Top Boy” To Return For A Second Season
“We Baaaaaack” – Drake.
Drake may not have released a ton of new music last year but he did have his hands on several major film and television projects that were released to critical acclaim. Among them was the Netflix series Top Boy, which we’ve learned is coming back for another season.
Drake shared the news on his Instagram last night, sharing the show’s full script, including the episode 201 which is titled “Killing No Murder.” He added to the excitement by writing, “WE BAAAAAAAACK @topboynetflix.”
Speaking about Drake’s involvement with the show, show’s actor Michael Ward told NME: “He came to the first read-through and spoke and that was mad motivating. But what was weird was I saw him at Wireless… and then less than 24 hours later I’m chatting to Dave and Drake’s walking in. This whole process, for me, has been surreal. You couldn’t even write it.”
Top Boy isn’t the only TV show Drake was involved in last year. The rapper also served as an executive producer on HBO’s hit Euphoria, which was named as another one of the best TV shows. We’ll keep you posted moving forward.
Drake Finally Confirms Netflix "Top Boy" Season 4 Will Arrive In 2020
Season four is on the way.
Drake didn’t release a ton of music in 2020 but he did have his hands on several major film and television projects that were released to critical acclaim. Among them was the long-awaited new season of Top Boy which initially aired in the early 2010s before getting canceled after its second season. Drake, thankfully, brought it back for a 10-episode third season on Netflix this past fall, finally reaching a broader audience beyond the UK.
Now, many of you, like myself, have wondered if it was coming back for a fourth season. Champagne Papi confirmed this a few days ago. GRMDaily put the question in the air, asking their Instagram followers whether a fourth season will arrive in 2020. “Of course,” the OVO don noted in the comment section.
Although Drake only confirmed this, it seemed inevitable since the season’s launch. Shortly after season three dropped, we spoke with Kano who plays Sully on the show. Although he couldn’t give us a concrete answer whether it would at the time, he gave us a promising answer. “Not official yet, but if I was a betting man…I’ll say it’s probably going to happen, yeah,” he told us. Surely, he was correct and it looks like we’ll get a new season of the show in 2020 from the executive producer himself.
