Dropkick Murphys frontman Ken Casey has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Macklemore, who was recently removed from Ed Sheeran’s tour following an impassioned speech regarding the conflict in Gaza. The situation has sparked a wider conversation about artist solidarity, with Ken Casey expressing that the way the situation was handled simply does not sit right with him.
Macklemore’s departure from the tour followed his vocal support for Palestinians during a performance at New Jersey’s Gillette Stadium. The speech drew immediate backlash from various figures, including Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft, who labeled the comments offensive. Subsequently, Macklemore was dropped from the tour, a decision that has since led to a domino effect as other support acts and backing band members have withdrawn in solidarity.

In a recent interview with Boston Public Radio, Ken Casey emphasized the importance of the bond between touring artists. “I know that, as a musician for 30 years, anytime we’ve gone on tour we’ve selected the bands that have opened for us – that’s brotherhood, sisterhood, that’s family,” Casey stated. “You live or die with the people you bring on the road. They’re your people.”

Casey noted that he has frequently taken political stances during his own performances, even when it resulted in backlash from venue owners. He argued that standing by one’s convictions is essential for an artist’s integrity. “Once you let that go, then you don’t have any worth in your music if you ask me,” he added.
Ed Sheeran has since addressed the situation, stating that he is “not complicit” and views the conflict as a “tragedy.” Despite this, the fallout continues, with several other artists, including FINNEAS and Lukas Graham, publicly supporting Macklemore. Meanwhile, the rapper has reportedly donated his earnings from the tour to aid efforts in the region, while Sheeran has seen a significant shift in his social media following.
