André 3000 says the Kendrick-Drake feud made him “a little sad”

André 3000 has shared his thoughts on the Kendrick-Drake beef, saying the whole saga left him feeling “a little sad”.

The OutKast legend, who last year took an artistic left turn with his instrumental jazz flute album ‘New Blue Sun’, discussed the rap feud of the year in a recent interview with Crack.

“I got a little sad, at a certain point,” he explained. “In early rap battles, you had kids in the park rapping against each other. But it’s not just people rapping now. You got people with 100 employees. You have livelihoods, empires, companies, deals — all of it can be jeopardized. If you don’t have anything to lose, sure, go for it. But if I already made it, I’m not sure it’s even worth it anymore.”

André is not the first hip-hop luminary to express their suspicions about the beef – Questlove called it “wrestling match level mudslinging and takedown by any means necessary”, while Jay Electronica and Vince Staples have also waded in.

Last month, André also shared his thoughts on the current generation of rappers, arguing that a lot of them “sound the same”.

Speaking about OutKast‘s time in the Dungeon Family – led by the late Organized Noize legend Rico Wade who died this April from heart failure –he said that today’s rap stars don’t “have time to cultivate themselves”.

Recommended

“If we were to come out as OutKast when we thought we were ready, we wouldn’t be around today ’cause we sounded like everybody else. We sounded like who we were listening to,” he theorised.

“Now, I don’t think artists have time to cultivate themselves so a lot of artists sound the same,” he continued. “You can quickly jump on a microphone — it’s awesome because you’re getting an immediacy, but you don’t get time to hone who you are.”

In the same interview, he clarified what he meant by saying it felt “inauthentic” for him to return to rapping in favour of his new jazz direction.

“If it’s in you, you should rap until you die,” he explained. “The way I do it, I’m always trying to look for the next. I’m not trying to uphold what I’ve done before. Of course, I have things to say now but if I can’t say them in a fresh innovative way, like I’m hanging on to an old flow that I used to do, it’s not enough for me.”

André is set to play two intimate shows at London’s Jazz Cafe on August 16 – a matinee and and evening show – ahead of his slot at All Points East the following day. See here for more information on the shows, dubbed ‘New Blue Sun Live In Concert’.

Those shows come ahead of a North American tour later in the year. See all those dates here and find any remaining tickets here.

Plain White T’s react to ‘Wah Gwan Delilah’, the Drake-featuring Toronto parody of ‘Hey There Delilah’

Chicago rock band Plain White T’s have reacted to Snowd4y’s Drake-featuring parody of ‘Hey There Delilah’ – see what the band had to say below.

Earlier this week, Toronto rapper Snowd4y (pronounced Snowday) shared a remix/cover of Plain White Ts’ ‘Hey There Delilah’ featuring a verse from Drake. The track – out now exclusively via Soundcloud – sees the two rappers alter the original Plain White T’s song to bizarre effect featuring parody-esque lyrics and a wealth of autotune.

Now, the Plain White T’s have shared on social media their reaction to listening to the song for first time. With a puzzled expression frontman Tom Higgenson said upon hearing Drake’s verse: “That’s not Drake. It’s crazy that everybody thinks that it’s real. It seems like it’s very obvious. I don’t know. But it’s cool. Whatever.”

Higgenson’s reaction seems to suggest that he believes the song was created by AI. However, after the track’s release, Drake shared it onto his Instagram story, confirming his involvement in the tune.

‘Wah Gwan Delilah’ marks the second release featuring Drake to drop since the last blow in his rap beef with Kendrick Lamar that unveiled throughout April and May. In late May, the Canadian rapper appeared on Sexxy Red’s ‘U My Everything’.

‘U My Everything’ was the first material recorded by Drake since dropping ‘The Heart Part 6’, which appeared to cap off an intense and viral back-and-forth between him and Kendrick Lamar.

Recommended

The track featured verses where Drake claimed he fed Lamar false intel that first surfaced in the latter’s tracks ‘Meet the Grahams’, ‘Not Like Us’, ‘Euphoria’, and ‘6:16 in LA’. Lamar has yet to release a new track since ‘Not Like Us’, which has since garnered 69million views on YouTube.

Lil Yachty doesn’t think Drake either won or lost beef with Kendrick Lamar

Lil Yachty has said that he believes that neither Drake nor Kendrick Lamar “won or lost” their epic recent beef.

The Atlanta rapper himself was dragged into the feud when he was namechecked on Lamar’s ‘Euphoria’ (“Yachty can’t give you no swag neither, I don’t give a fuck ‘bout who you hang with”), which he has said he “didn’t really want anything to do with”.

“I knew that my name was mentioned before it came out,” he said on his podcast A Safe Place. “I didn’t hear the record but I had got word that I was mentioned. I wasn’t surprised.”

He went on to clarify that he has appreciated the work that has been put into the back-and-forth. “I got a ton of respect for both of these guys,” he said. “Honestly, it was a cool thing to watch. I learned so much. It was an honour and blessing to be able to experience it first hand.”

When asked to give his verdict on who came out on top, Yachty added: “Drake dropped great records. But also, let’s be fair: Drake was deemed a loser in this battle before it started because people don’t like him and haven’t. I don’t think people are gonna stop listening to Drake and Drake’s career is gonna flush.”

He then addressed Drake, adding: “I don’t feel like you won or lost.”

Recommended

“Rappers have lost, and then lost everything. But this hasn’t happened to Drake. He will still be in everybody’s Spotify Wrapped at the end of the year and he’ll still drop hits and control the summer. I think Kendrick made very smart moves and I don’t think Drake would disagree.”

The Kendrick-Drake beef has dominated the news over the last two months, being kindled by Kendrick’s contribution to ‘Like That’, from Metro Boomin and Future’s album ‘We Don’t Trust You’. On the track, Lamar responded to J. Cole and Drake’s ‘First Person Shooter’, where Cole called the trio “the big three”, by rapping: “Motherfuck the big three / N***, it’s just big me”.

That triggered a sequence of back-and-forth tracks: Drake’s ‘Push Ups’ and ‘Taylor Made Freestyle’, followed by Lamar’s ‘Euphoria’ and ‘6:16 In LA’. Drake hit back with ‘Family Matters’, which was swiftly followed by Lamar’s ‘Meet The Grahams’. The most recent contributions are Kendrick’s ‘Not Like Us’ and Drake’s ‘The Heart, Part 6’.

‘Not Like Us’ has since topped the Billboard Hot 100 and broken the Spotify record for the most streamed rap song in one day, while other rap luminaries have spoken out against the beef, including Vince Staples, who said the community “deserve better”, and Questlove, who called it “wrestling-match level mudslinging”.

In addition, a shooting outside Drake’s residence in Toronto on May 7 left a bodyguard seriously injured. There is no confirmation that the shooting was connected to the ongoing beef. While reporting on the story, a TV news anchor slipped up and called Drake a “raper” not a “rapper”.

A day after the shooting, a man was arrested for attempting to break into Drake’s Toronto mansion. That incident was the first of three trespassing attempts that week, which increased media presence at the home. Drake took to Instagram to ask whoever operated a news helicopter to stop flying at night so he could sleep.

Toronto restaurant New Ho King sees huge spike in interest after Kendrick Lamar’s Drake diss track

Kendrick Lamar‘s Drake diss track has caused a massive spike in interest for the Toronto restaurant New Ho King.

In Lamar’s song ‘Euphoria’, the ‘Humble’ artist raps in a Toronto accent and name-checks the Chinese restaurant towards the end of the second verse saying: ‘I be at New Ho King eatin’ fried rice with a dip sauce and a blammy’.

The restaurant is located on Spadina Avenue in Toronto. After the release of ‘Euphoria’, New Ho King has received a plethora of five-star reviews on Google, with the majority referencing Lamar and the track. “Truly euphoric meal,” read one review left by a user while another wrote: “That fried rice with the dip sauce is the way to go. All my crodies love it.”

It currently has a 4.0 star rating on Google. Speaking to local TV station CityNews, Johnny Lu – the owner of New Ho King – expressed his gratitude for the mention in the song and called Lamar a “Good guy”.

Elsewhere, it was revealed that Lamar included a sample of a reversed Richard Pryor line from ‘The Wiz’ in ‘Euphoria’.

The jumbled audio in the intro of the six-minute-long track is actually dialogue from the 1978 film The Wiz that had been reversed.

Recommended

Shortly after the track’s release, fans clipped the beginning audio and played it backwards to find that the first line: “eurt si em tuoba yas yeht gnihtyrevE” happens to be a line from the iconic film in which Richard Pryor – who portrayed The Wiz – says: “Everything they say about me is true.”

Pryor’s line in the film is taken from a scene in which his character is exposed as Herman Smith, a washed-up politician from Atlantic City. He admits to being Smith and says: “Everything they say about me is true. I’m a phony.”

Fans have also speculated that Lamar’s inclusion of The Wiz is in connection to his verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s ‘Like That‘ which was released last month.

In the track, the ‘Humble’ rapper comparing his work and contributions to that of the late Prince“Prince outlived Mike Jack’ N****,” Drake had compared himself to Michael Jackson on his J. Cole collab ‘First Person Shooter’. Jackson was featured in The Wiz, portraying the Scarecrow.

Cole later responded with his own diss, ‘7 Minute Drill’, but he later apologised for it and pulled it from streaming.

Drake’s own response came in the form of ‘Push Ups’ and ‘Taylor Made Freestyle‘ but landed in hot water after he used AI to emulate Tupac Shakur‘s vocals, leading to the late rapper’s estate threatening legal action. He subsequently removed the track from streaming.

Despite Drake claiming that his rival had “nothing to drop” in response, Lamar has fired back with ‘Euphoria’, addressing him directly for the first time.

Other musicians have since waded into the debate: Kanye West dropped his own remix of ‘Like That’, comedian Munya Chawawa released his own parody Lamar diss track and George The Poet called Lamar “a non-revolutionary cosplaying as a revolutionary”.

In other news, Drake recently replied to ‘Euphoria’ on his Instagram stories. The ‘Know Yourself’ rapper seemed to mock Lamar’s lyrics: “I’m the biggest hater / I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress / I hate the way that you sneak diss, if I catch flight, it’s gon’ be direct” with a scene from cult romcom 10 Things I Hate About You.

In October, Drake dropped his long-awaited eighth studio album, ‘For All The Dogs’, which NME gave two stars, calling the record “banger-less, bitter and deeply mid.”

On the other hand, Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem headlined Tyler, the Creator‘s Camp Flog Gnaw festival this year. They performed their collaboration ‘The Hillbillies’ for the first time together.

Drake ties Michael Jackson for most Number One hits by a male solo artist

Drake and Michael Jackson have tied with the most Number One hits by a male solo artist in Billboard history.

The rapper’s track ‘First Person Shooter’ which features J. Cole debuted at Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 charts making it his 13th chart-topping song in the US charts which is a record that had yet to be surpassed since Jackson achieved it back in 1995. (per Pitchfork)

Both musicians are now tied, sharing the title of fourth-most Number One songs to chart on the Hot 100. The Beatles currently hold the reigning titled of most Number One tracks with 20 songs on the charts followed by Mariah Carey with 19 and Rhianna close behind with 14.

Ironically, the lyrics in ‘First Person Shooter’ anticipated the milestone with Drake rapping: “I’m one away from Michael” and alluding to Jackson’s iconic 1982 hit ‘Beat It’. The track also marks Cole’s first Hot 100 Number One track.

The song is featured on Drake’s eighth studio album ‘For All The Dogs‘. The LP also earned the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart making it the rapper’s 13th Number One album. Per Billboard, the LP earned the equivalent of 402,000 units, with the overwhelming majority of them due to streaming: 391,000 units compared to 10,000 album sale units.

In a two-star review of ‘For All The Dogs’, NME shared:“Trailed as a return to form, the rap megastar instead doubles-down on his worst impulses on the final album before his health-induced hiatus.”

It continued: “‘For All The Dogs’- his third solo LP in as many years –  not only feels tiring, but sounds tired too.”

Elsewhere, Drake’s six-year-old son, Adonis Graham, recently released a debut single titled ‘My Man Freestyle’.

Produced by Lil E$$o, the song is an extended version of Adonis’ brief verse on ‘Daylight’. The playful track sees the budding MC rap about “playing on my iPad” and “saying hi to my Dad.”

Drake’s six-year-old son Adonis shares debut single ‘My Man Freestyle’

Drake’s six-year-old son, Adonis Graham, has released a debut single titled ‘My Man Freestyle’.

Produced by Lil E$$o, the song is an extended version of Adonis’ brief verse on ‘Daylight’, which featured on Drake’s latest studio album, ‘For All The Dogs’. The playful track sees the budding MC rap about “playing on my iPad” and “saying hi to my Dad.”

Drake took to Instagram today (October 16) to share the music video for ‘My Man Freestyle’, which follows Adonis as he rallies around a young basketball team and provides a pep talk to the players. “We just have to work harder,” Adonis says to his applauding teammates, “we have to play better.”

Drake himself makes a cameo towards the end of the clip, appearing at a post-game press conference alongside his son. It marks the most recent collaboration between the father-son duo. In September, Drake revealed that the hand drawn picture of a red-eyed dog on the cover of ‘For All The Dogs’ was designed by Adonis.

A version of the picture later appeared in the music video for the album single ‘8AM in Charlotte’, which also featured Adonis. As part of a pre-song cameo, Drake asks his son a series of questions about his drawings, which include designs of a goat, monsters, and a flower.

Drake shared images of his son for the first time in 2020, taking to Instagram to share a message about his “beautiful family.” Adonis has made increasingly more public appearances since then, joining his father on stage at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards and attending Drake’s concert in Los Angeles in August of this year.

“I can’t talk about titties tonight in LA because my son is at the show for the first time ever,” Drake said during the show as part of his ‘It’s All A Blur’ tour with 21 Savage. “We’ve got to keep this real PG tonight.”

In other Drake news, the rapper last week bet $850K on internet star Logan Paul to beat American mixed martial artist Dillon Danis via KO.

On Wednesday (October 4), the rapper took to social media to surprise drop ‘8AM In Charlotte’, sharing its music video onto his Instagram page. The video begins with the rapper’s son Adonis talking about his artwork, which appears on the cover of ‘For All The Dogs’.

In the video, Adonis writes “daddy” next to a drawing of a goat. When Drake asks if that means Adonis thinks his father is the goat – here referencing the term Greatest Of All Time – his son says yes. “It’s Daddy Goat,” Adonis replies. “That makes perfect sense to me,” Drake says.

The rapper’s new album was initially set for release on September 22, but was pushed back so that he could have more time to finish the record while still on tour.

Drake’s most recent solo album was last year’s ‘Honestly, Nevermind’. That album scored a three-star review from NME, with Kyann-Sian Williams writing: “‘Honestly, Nevermind’ is an unexpected elevation from the bland trap, R&B remakes and Drake’s melancholic attitude to love we heard last time around. He doesn’t quite shift the latter as much as one would hope – the album is as tiresomely woe-is-me as anything he’s ever done – but the house sound has at least given him the creative boost that his recording career has been crying out for recently.”

Drake and 21 Savage ordered to stop using fake Vogue magazine covers

Drake and 21 Savage have been ordered to stop using a fake Vogue cover story to promote their collaborative album ‘Her Loss’.

  • READ MORE: Drake and 21 Savage – ‘Her Loss’ review: exciting prospect marred by lazy songwriting

A judge ruled in favour of publisher Condé Nast today (November 10), issuing a temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction against the two rappers according to Billboard.

The judge stated that the fake cover was likely violating the publisher’s trademarks because Drake and 21 were “misleading consumers” and “deceiving the public.” They added: “Issuance of the requested temporary restraining order is in the public interest to protect the public against confusion, deception and mistake.”

The judge’s order bars Drake and 21 Savage from “using, displaying, dissenting or distributing” the fake cover or copies they printed and it also requires them to take down websites and social media posts sharing the image. Furthermore, the pair are to stop making any mention of Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour.

According to TMZ, Vogue and Wintour “have not endorsed [‘Her Loss’] in any way” and have asked multiple times for all promotions using the Vogue name to be taken down.

The ruling comes two days after the rappers were sued by Vogue after sharing a fake cover of the magazine.

The lawsuit put forward by Condé Nast, which had been obtained by both Rolling Stone and Pitchfork, alleged that duo’s actions were a “deceptive campaign” that was not authorised by the company.

It is also claimed that a “counterfeit issue of Vogue” was distributed in large cities across North America, leading fans to believe the magazines were genuine.

Both rappers are yet to comment on the allegations.

‘Her Loss’ served as Drake and Savage’s debut collaborative full-length project upon its release last Friday (November 4). The rappers had appeared on several tracks together in the past, beginning with the release of ‘Sneakin’ in 2016. They also both appeared on the Juicy J-sampling track ‘Knife Talk’ (from Drake’s solo 2022 album ‘Honestly, Nevermind’), as well as ‘Mr. Right Now’ alongside Metro Boomin.

In a three-star review of the album, NME wrote: “Despite some great beats and some heavy bars, ‘Her Loss’ is underwhelming.

“The whining misogyny laced throughout the record is a symptom of a wider issue: this album is essentially the sonic imprint of a massively bloated ego.”

Kanye West reportedly fired a Yeezy employee for asking to listen to Drake

Kanye West reportedly fired Yeezy employee for asking to listen to Drake in the office, a new report claims.

A new report from Rolling Stone has made claims surrounding employee treatment at Yeezy, with ex-workers alleging a “cult-like atmosphere” at the brand’s office.

“Nothing has ever compared to the amount of chaos, the amount of stress and [the amount of] anxiety you go through working for Yeezy,” a senior staffer said in the report.

Another detailed how Kanye allegedly liked to play his own music in the office, but in 2015 a staffer suggested they play something else, to which Kanye reportedly asked for suggestions from staff.

The staff member in question told Rolling Stone: “I thought, ‘Oh, he’s a rapper, I should probably mention some rap’,” adding: “Big mistake — the next day I was fired.”

Elsewhere in the report, a staffer was also allegedly fired for wearing a yellow jumper to the office, and told: “Dress for the palette or you dress in black.”

One former employee said: “Everyone’s always on the verge of losing their job, so the dynamics are total chaos. He doesn’t necessarily have people that he can trust around him.”

Another added: “The biggest issue is that he doesn’t appear to have high-level operational people that he trusts. Without the operational backbone, no company can really exist for a super long time. You can’t build a multi-billion-dollar brand without an operations director who stays in the job for more than six months. … He needs professionals that don’t give a shit that he’s Kanye West.”

Rolling Stone were unable to contact Kanye West for the piece.

Elsewhere, Adidas has revealed it intends to sell Yeezy products without West’s branding. West partnered with Adidas under the Yeezy banner in late 2013, with their first collection debuting in 2015. Under the terms of their agreement, it was stipulated that West would retain 100 per cent ownership of Yeezy, with full creative control over products released through the brand.

Last month, after West sparked controversy by wearing a “White Lives Matter” shirt during his Yeezy season nine show at Paris Fashion Week, Adidas said it had placed their partnership with the rapper “under review”. West responded in a since-deleted Instagram post, writing: “FUUUUUUCK ADIDAS I AM ADIDAS.”

On October 25, after West publicly made a string of antisemitic comments, Adidas officially terminated their partnership with the rapper, calling his inflammatory statements “unacceptable, hateful and dangerous” in a statement.

Adidas is one of several companies to end their association with West due to his antisemitic remarks in recent weeks. Balenciaga – who West walked the runway for at last month’s Paris Fashion Week – have also cut ties with the rapper. JPMorgan Chase decided to “end its banking relationship” with West, and he was also reportedly dropped by his lawyer and talent agency.

Drake and 21 Savage are being sued by Vogue over fake magazine covers

Drake and 21 Savage are being sued by Vogue after sharing a fake cover of the magazine as part of their collaborative album ‘Her Loss’.

It is also claims that a “counterfeit issue of Vogue” was distributed in large cities across North America, leading fans to believe the magazines were genuine.

Both rappers are yet to comment on the allegations.

As part of the campaign the rappers also promoted a fake NPR Tiny Desk appearance and updated an old Howard Stern interview.

They also parodied Saturday Night Live, sharing a performance of ‘On BS’ on a similar stage after being introduced by Michael B. Jordan.

Yesterday (November 7), the fake promo trail for ‘Her Loss’ continued with Drake and 21 Savage seemingly taking to COLORS’ iconic gold room for a performance of ‘Privileged Rappers’.

“The whining misogyny laced throughout the record is a symptom of a wider issue: this album is essentially the sonic imprint of a massively bloated ego. It’s yet more evidence that Drake’s art is suffering under the strain of his obsession with churning out as much music as is physically possible. And while 21 doesn’t have the same problem, both halves of the duo are responsible for an album that had the potential to be a classic, and missed.”

Migos rapper Takeoff, real name Kirsnick Khari Ball, was shot and killed at a bowling alley in Houston, Texas in the early hours of last Tuesday morning (November 1). He was 28 years old.

It has since been confirmed by a preliminary autopsy report that Takeoff died as a result of “penetrating gunshot wounds of head and torso into arms”. The full report is not yet complete.

Drake eulogised the late artist during the opening segment of his Table For One radio show on SiriusXM last Thursday (November 3).

He opened up about how he “formed a brotherhood” with Takeoff after featuring on a remix of Migos’ 2013 debut single, ‘Versace’. “I always talk about the fact that this was one family,” Drake added. “My friends in the music industry are not friends, they’re family.”

The rapper/singer continued: “So, our deepest condolences – tragic loss for all of us and, you know, a dark cloud over this business that we love so much. And, man… I just encourage everybody to lock into that mindset, no matter where you are, you know? It’s just really… it’s a life that’s worth living, and everybody deserves that chance.”

Other artists to have paid tribute to Takeoff include the likes of Beyoncé, Dave, Tyler, The Creator, 50 Cent and Rick Ross.

Meanwhile, Drake last week released a new collaborative studio album with 21 Savage called ‘Her Loss’.

Lil Yachty says Drake’s ‘Circo Loco’ line is not about Megan Thee Stallion

Lil Yachty has said a controversial lyric on Drake and 21 Savage’s new collaborative album ‘Her Loss’ is not about Megan Thee Stallion.

In the first verse of the album’s ninth song ‘Circo Loco’, Drake raps: “This bitch lie ’bout getting shot but she still a stallion“.

Megan Thee Stallion alleged that Tory Lanez shot her in the foot following a house party in July 2020, which Lanez denied.

Lanez was charged months later with felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm – personal use of a firearm – and for carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle. He pleaded not guilty to the assault charge in November 2020, with the court trial now scheduled for November 28.

Now, Lil Yachty, who has a writing credit on the track, has weighed in on the controversy.

“I know he’s not going to address it, because I know Drake,” he said in an Instagram live last week. “It’s not about Megan it’s about women lying about their butt shots saying it’s real when it’s fake.”

‘Her Loss’ was first announced on October 23 with the release of the music video for ‘Jimmy Crooks’, which features both Drake and 21 Savage, and was included on the tracklist of Drake’s 2022 album ‘Honestly, Nevermind’.

Last week, Drake and Savage promoted ‘Her Loss’ with a series of parody interviews and magazine covers, appearing on the cover of a fake edition of Vogue with an accompanying message of thanks to editor Anna Wintour “for the love and support on his historic moment”.

While ‘Her Loss’ marks Drake and Savage’s first full-length project, the duo have collaborated on a handful of songs in the past, beginning with the release of ‘Sneakin’ in 2016. They also both appeared to the Juicy J-sampling track ‘Knife Talk’ (from ‘Honestly, Nevermind), as well as ‘Mr. Right Now’ alongside Metro Boomin.

Drake and 21 Savage release fake ‘SNL’ performance introduced by Michael B. Jordan

Drake and 21 Savage have staged a fake Saturday Night Live performance of ‘On BS’, lifted from the pair’s new collaborative album ‘Her Loss’.

Shared to Drake’s Instagram and YouTube yesterday (November 6), the performance is introduced by actor Michael B. Jordan, who assumes the place of an SNL host while presenting the performance. “Ladies and gentlemen, presenting your musical guest for the evening,” he says. “Drake and 21 Savage, performing a song off of one of the most relatable albums of all time, ‘Her Loss’.” Canned studio laughter then makes way for the pair’s performance, which takes place in a recreation of the SNL set.

For his part, Drake has appeared on Saturday Night Live twice as a host and three times as a musical guest. 21 Savage, however, has never appeared on the show. Watch Drake and 21 Savage’s spoof SNL performance below:

The faux-performance was shared on the same day that Steve Lacy made his debut on the actual show, where he performed his number one hit ‘Bad Habit’ and ‘Helmet’ from his 2022 album ‘Gemini Rights’.

It marks the pair’s most recent parody media appearance in promotion of ‘Her Loss’. In the lead-up to its arrival, the rappers appeared on a fake cover of Vogue, and accompanied the photoshoot with a message thanking editor Anna Wintour “for the love and support”. Elsewhere, they spoofed Vogue‘s ‘In The Bag’ series, with Savage naming the children’s book Charlotte’s Web as one of his “most essential” items.

‘On BS’ is the latest ‘Her Loss’ song to attract headlines, following Drake’s apparent swipe at Megan Thee Stallion on ‘Circo Loco’. During that song’s opening verse, Drake casts doubt over Megan’s alleged shooting in 2020, rapping: “This bitch lie ’bout getting shot / But she still a stallion.” In response, Megan posted a series of tweets demanding that rappers “stop using [her] shooting for clout.”

Drake pays fresh tribute to “legendary, unprecedented” Takeoff

Drake has paid fresh tribute to late Migos rapper Takeoff, describing him as “legendary”  and “unprecedented”.

Takeoff, real name Kirsnick Khari Ball, was shot and killed at a bowling alley in Houston, Texas in the early hours of Tuesday morning (November 1). He was 28 years old.

  • READ MORE: How the understated Takeoff became the real superstar of Migos

It has since been confirmed by a preliminary autopsy report that Takeoff died as a result of “penetrating gunshot wounds of head and torso into arms”. The full report is not yet complete.

In the wake of Ball’s passing, Drake shared an image of himself performing live on-stage with the artist on Instagram.

“I got the best memories of all of us seeing the world together and bringing light to every city we touch,” he wrote as the caption. “That’s what I’ll focus on for now […] rest easy space man.”

As Complex reports, the ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ star eulogised Takeoff during the opening segment of his Table For One radio show on SiriusXM last night (November 3).

“Before I get into the pleasantries, I’d just like to send our deepest condolences from the family to the entire QC [Migos’ record label, Quality Control Music], to our brother Quavo, to our brother Offset, to the friends and loved ones of the legendary, unprecedented Takeoff – a guy that I knew for a long, long time,” Drake began.

He went on to talk about how he “formed a brotherhood” with Takeoff after featuring on a remix of Migos’ 2013 debut single, ‘Versace’.

It’s just really… it’s a life that’s worth living, and everybody deserves that chance.

“It’s unfortunate that one of our dear, dear brothers had to leave us this week. And it’s tough to even talk about, I don’t even know how to really – I don’t have the words, I feel like I’m rambling, but, yeah: again, our deepest condolences from the family. We love you, and I appreciate the memories, appreciate the memories.”

You can listen to a recording of the message in the tweet below.

In a statement issued after Takeoff’s death, Migos’ record label Quality Control Music wrote: “It is with broken hearts and deep sadness that we mourn the loss of our beloved brother Kirsnick Khari Ball, known to the world as Takeoff.

“Senseless violence and a stray bullet has taken another life from this world and we are devastated. Please respect his family and friends as we all continue to process this monumental loss.”

Police in Houston have made an appeal for witnesses to come forward in order to help identify the gunman who fired the fatal shot.

Elsewhere, tributes to Takeoff have poured in from the likes of Beyoncé, Dave, Tyler, The Creator, 50 Cent and Rick Ross.

Drake and 21 Savage album ‘Her Loss’ delayed after producer Noah “40” Shebib contracts COVID

Drake and 21 Savage have announced that their collaborative album ‘Her Loss’ has been pushed back by a week after Drake’s longtime producer Noah “40” Shebib contracted COVID-19 while working on the album.

In a post shared to both artists Instagram stories, it was revealed that Shebib had contracted COVID while mixing and mastering the record and is “resting up”. As a result, the album – which was set to arrive tomorrow (October 28) – will now be released a week later on November 4.

Drake and 21 Savage announced ‘Her Loss’ over the weekend. Its title and original release date appeared midway through the video for ‘Jimmy Cooks’, a track from Drake’s 2021 album ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ that features Savage.

While ‘Her Loss’ will mark the first full project that Drake and 21 Savage have collaborated on together, it’s far from the first time the pair have teamed up. Savage also appeared on Drake’s 2021 ‘Certified Lover Boy’ cut ‘Knife Talk’, while Drake featured on ‘Mr. Right Now’ from Savage and Metro Boomin‘s ‘Savage Mode II’ back in 2020.

‘Honestly, Nevermind’, Drake’s seventh studio album, arrived in June just a few hours after the rapper and singer announced it. In a three-star review, NME called the record “an unexpected elevation from the bland trap, R&B remakes and Drake’s melancholic attitude to love we heard last time around”.

“He doesn’t quite shift the latter as much as one would hope – the album is as tiresomely woe-is-me as anything he’s ever done – but the house sound has at least given him the creative boost that his recording career has been crying out for recently.”

Nick Grimshaw recalls puking in front of Drake after smoking weed at party

Nick Grimshaw has written about the time he threw up in front of Drake and other musicians after smoking weed at an MTV VMAs post-show party in 2010.

The TV presenter and former BBC Radio 1 host recalled in his new autobiography Soft Boy, which is released this Thursday (October 27), the unfortunate incident.

In an extract published by The Sun Grimshaw detailed being invited to a party at Drake’s studio in the US by his friend Florence Welch (Florence + The Machine).

“Drake played some tunes and Flo wailed along while someone passed around a comedy-sized cartoon-like spliff. I chuffed down on it and smiled at Drake,” Grimshaw wrote.

But he soon began to feel unwell. “I stepped a foot outside and proceeded to projectile vomit for what felt like 30 minutes,” he added.

Although he managed to reach outside to puke, security footage of him throwing up ended up being shown to everyone in attendance.

He continued: “I stepped back in, pale and smelling slightly of vom. The room erupted into a fit of laughter. I looked up to see a CCTV screen showing the exact location of the vom incident. I had it live streamed into the studio.”

Elsewhere in his memoir Grimshaw shares anecdotes about his friend, the late Amy Winehouse, and other celebrity friends including the supermodel Kate Moss.

He said of Winehouse: “We’d all go back to hers and fire up her electric sun bed. We’d sit on the floor side by side and toss our heads back into it to tan our faces while smoking fags and drinking a mini Red Stripe.”

Earlier this year Grimshaw caught up with NME on the red carpet of the BandLab NME Awards 2022 where he talked about the “magic” of Jack Antonoff as well as some of his favourite memories from NME awards past.

In Drake news, the rapper and singer has announced a collaborative album with 21 Savage, ‘Her Loss’, which is out next week.

Drake and 21 Savage announce joint album ‘Her Loss’, share ‘Jimmy Cooks’ music video

Drake and 21 Savage have announced a new collaborative album is on its way, titled ‘Her Loss’.

The pair revealed the forthcoming project in the Mahfuz-directed music video for ‘Jimmy Cooks’, lifted from Drake’s recent record ‘Honestly, Nevermind’. Released today (October 23), the clip sees the pair rapping in a warehouse space, with various videos projected onto the screen behind them.

Drake and Savage have linked up multiple times over the years, with the latter appearing on Drake’s 2021 cut ‘Knife Talk’ from his ‘Certified Lover Boy’ album. Drake also featured on Savage and Metro Boomin’s ‘Savage Mode II’, appearing on the track ‘Mr. Right Now’.

‘Honestly, Nevermind’ arrived back in June, just hours after Drake announced it. Speaking about the record in a three-star review, NME‘s Kyann-Sian Williams said: “‘Honestly, Nevermind’ is an unexpected elevation from the bland trap, R&B remakes and Drake’s melancholic attitude to love we heard last time around.”

“He doesn’t quite shift the latter as much as one would hope – the album is as tiresomely woe-is-me as anything he’s ever done – but the house sound has at least given him the creative boost that his recording career has been crying out for recently.”

Though the album qualifies for the 2023 Grammy awards, Drake was notably absent from the submissions list, which went to its first round of voting last week.

It follows Drake’s ongoing criticism of the awards and the Recording Academy after he withdrew 2021 album ‘Certified Lover Boy’ and its single ‘Way 2 Sexy’, featuring Future and Young Thug, from last year’s nominations.

Drake reveals he was paid just $100 to open for Ice Cube in 2006

Drake has confirmed that he was paid just $100 (£89) to open for Ice Cube at a gig in 2006.

  • READ MORE: Kanye beef, Right Said Fred samples and the Drake-iest lyrics yet: 10 talking points from Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’

Taking to his Instagram Story on Tuesday (October 18), Drake re-shared a post by Flyer Vault, an archival account that documents the concert history of his Toronto hometown. The post includes an invoice for the Ice Cube-headlined concert in question, which took place at the city’s Kool Haus venue in August of 2006.

While Ice Cube’s fee is redacted, the invoice shows that Drake received a hundred-dollar sum for his supporting performance. According to Flyer Vault, the 30-minute opener marked “what was likely [Drake’s] first ever concert”, and saw the rapper perform songs from his debut 2006 mixtape ‘Room For Improvement’.

Confirming the payday in his re-post, Drake used the invoice to encourage his musician fans, writing that “this is for anybody getting 100 a show right now”, before imploring them to “keep going”. Drake shared his second mixtape, ‘Comeback Season’, in 2007, before releasing what would become his breakout project – the EP ‘So Far Gone’ – which later earned him his first-ever Grammy nominations in 2010.

Drake’s more recent album, however, will not be in contention at this year’s Grammys, following the rapper’s decision to withdraw his nomination for 2021’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’. While the reason for his rejection of the Best Rap Album nod remains unclear, Drake has criticised the Grammys in the past, writing in 2020 that “we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked” by the awards body following The Weeknd’s ‘After Hours’ snub that same year.

As evidence of how far he’s come since his 2006 pay-check, Drake recently bet $833,333 Canadian dollars (£537,000) on the football club FC Barcelona. The team’s loss to Real Madrid on October 16 resulted in the rapper losing over half a million pounds on the bet, adding to his reputation for being a bad luck charm.

Kanye West says Drake is “greatest rapper ever”

Kanye West has said that Drake is the “greatest rapper ever”.

  • READ MORE: With his “White Lives Matter” stunt, has Kanye West finally hit the point of no return?

The rapper and entrepreneur said in a new interview that his collaborator tops the all-time list of MCs

“Drake is the greatest rapper ever, and I don’t apologise about it,” Ye told the Drink Champs podcast. He was then interrupted by the podcast’s co-founder and co-host, N.O.R.E., who brought up rumours about Drake formerly having a sexual relationship with Kris Jenner, the mother of Ye’s ex-wife Kim Kardashian.

Ye’s praise for Drake follows the pair reconciling last year after years of trading barbs, with the duo putting on the Free Larry Hoover benefit concert.

West’s comments about the Canadian rap star have come amid a media storm over a range of controversial statements he’s made in recent weeks including those that are anti-Semitic, fatphobic and racially sensitive in nature.

After briefly making his Twitter comeback he was blocked on the social media platform as well as Meta (which owns Facebook and Instagram) following a series of anti-Semitic posts. An ex-staffer at TMZ has also since claimed that the rapper once praised “Hitler and the Nazis” during an interview with the site.

Prior to his recent anti-Semitic claims Ye denounced the Black Lives Matter movement as a “scam” in defence of wearing an “White Lives Matter” shirt at Balenciaga’s recent Paris Fashion Week show. He has doubled down on the stunt.

Elsewhere, last week Lizzo appeared to respond to Ye’s comments about her weight, saying that she’s “minding my fat Black business”.

In a recent interview on Fox News, West said that what he believed was the promotion of obesity by social media companies was “demonic”. “When Lizzo loses 10 pounds and announces it, the bots … on Instagram, they attack her losing weight, because the media wants to put out a perception that being overweight is the new goal when it’s actually unhealthy,” he told host Tucker Carlson.

Ye’s behaviour has led to commercial partnerships falling through or reportedly being put on hold, including those with the bank JPMorgan Chase and the sportswear brand Adidas.

Many artists, celebrities, politicians and organisations have since publicly condemned West over his remarks including Jack Antonoff, David Schwimmer and New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Approached by Page Six in the wake of JPMorgan severing ties as he left a screening in Nashville, West also said in response to the backlash about his anti-Semitic comments: “Hey, if you call somebody out for bad business, that means you’re being anti-Semitic. I feel happy to have crossed the line of that idea so we can speak openly about things, like getting cancelled by a bank.”

West added that he was “the richest black man in American history, that put $140 million in JPMorgan”, before ending the interview by saying that he will “speak at a different time”.

Taylor Swift submits ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’ for 2023 Grammys, Drake and The Weeknd still absent

Submissions for the 2023 Grammys are in, with the first round voting for next year’s awards kicking off yesterday (October 13).

There are a number of notable submissions and absentees from the 2023 submissions list, including six from Taylor Swift. Swift has put forward ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’ for consideration in the Album of the Year and Best Country Album categories, eight years after the original ‘Red’ release lost in both at the 2014 awards.

Her other submissions include ‘All Too Well (10 Minute Version)’ for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, ‘I Bet You Think About Me (Taylor’s Version)(From The Vault)’ for Best Country Song and Best Country Performance, and the Phoebe Bridgers-featuring ‘Nothing New (Taylor’s Version)(From The Vault)’ for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

Beyoncé has entered two dance/electronic category nominations for the first time. She’s put forward her seventh studio album ‘Renaissance’ for both Album of the Year and Best Dance/Electronic Album, and its lead single ‘Break My Soul’ for Song of the Year, Recording of the Year and Best Dance/Electronic Recording. She’s won the most Grammy awards for any female artist and any male or female singer, with 28 wins over her career.

Then there were the notable absentees, such as Drake and The Weeknd. Neither submitted any works for the 2023 awards, despite both having released major albums this past year – The Weeknd’s ‘Dawn FM’ came out in January, while Drake’s ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ arrived in June.

It follows Drake’s ongoing criticism of the awards and the Recording Academy after he withdrew 2021 album ‘Certified Lover Boy’ and its single ‘Way 2 Sexy’, featuring Future and Young Thug, from last year’s nominations.

The Weeknd has also expressed frustration with the Grammys, boycotting the awards after his 2020 album ‘After Hours’ and its singles failed to receive any nominations. “Because of the secret committees, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys,” he said at the time.

Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak‘s project Silk Sonic are also absent from the list, with Mars saying yesterday they’d decided to withhold their album, ‘An Evening With Silk Sonic’ from next year’s nominations.

“We truly put our all on this record, but Silk Sonic would like to gracefully, humbly and, most importantly, sexually bow out of submitting our album this year,” Mars told Rolling Stone in a statement.

The duo took home Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song categories at the 2022 ceremony for their single ‘Leave The Door Open’.

Shortlisted nominations will be revealed later this year, with winners announced at the 65th Grammy awards ceremony in February 2023.

SiriusXM’s Small Stages series has recently hosted special shows from the likes of Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Apollo Theater.

Last month, Drake posted screenshots showing hateful Instagram messages he’d sent to Needle Drop music critic Anthony Fantano. It came after Fantano joked about Drake messaging him during a video he posted on YouTube.

After Drake shared the actual DMs he’d sent to Fantano, the latter responded to the situation by calling the messages “very mad, salty … weird and awkward”.

In a review of ‘Honestly, Nevermind’, NME described the record as “an unexpected elevation from the bland trap, R&B remakes and Drake’s melancholic attitude to love we heard last time around”.

It added: “He doesn’t quite shift the latter as much as one would hope – the album is as tiresomely woe-is-me as anything he’s ever done – but the house sound has at least given him the creative boost that his recording career has been crying out for recently.”

Drake posts DMs showing hateful messages to music critic Anthony Fantano

Drake appears to have beef with popular music journalist Anthony Fantano (best known for his YouTube channel The Needle Drop), revealing on his own accord that he’d sent the critic hateful messages on Instagram.

  • READ MORE: Drake – ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ review: rapper’s house makeover provides long-overdue career boost

Drake posted a screenshot of the messages he sent to Fantano on his own Instagram Story, poking fun at the critic’s rating system – whereby he’ll give records a score from 1 to 10 with a prefix of “light”, “decent”, “strong” or somewhere in-between (ie. “a light to decent 5”) – by writing: “Your existence is a light 1. And the 1 is ‘cause you are alive. And ‘cause you somehow wifed a Black girl. I’m feeling a light to decent 1 on your existence.”

It comes after Fantano joked about being messaged by Drake on YouTube; in a video posted to his eponymous secondary channel, he talked through screenshots of a fake thread showing Drake enthusiastically sharing a vegan recipe for chocolate chip cookies. Nowhere in the video, which runs for just over eight-and-a-half minutes, does Fantano even allude to the actual content of Drake’s messages.

After Drake shared the actual messages he sent to Fantano, the latter shared a legitimate response to the situation, calling the messages “very mad, salty … weird and awkward”. Explaining why he shared the initial video with the comical fake messages, Fantano noted that he would have considered it “silly and trashy” to share the messages himself, but saw an opportunity to generate content out of the situation.

Fantano pointed out that his intent was to “make [the fake messages] so absurd and so silly that anybody who sees me reading them aloud is going to look at this and be like, ‘Drake didn’t send him this! This is ridiculous… This is just a shitpost.’ Which is was – it was, in fact, a shitpost.”

The critic was ultimately unfazed by Drake’s attempt at bullying – pointing out how the rapper had used his own rating system to insult him, Fantano quipped: “You can’t destroy me with my own rating system, dude, it’s my rating system.”

Drake’s seventh album, ‘Honestly, Nevermind’, arrived back in June. The record earned a three-star review from NME’s Kyann-Sian Williams, who described the album as “an unexpected elevation from the bland trap” heard on last year’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’.

Fantano, on the other hand, gave the album a review so scathing it didn’t warrant a numbered rating. He called it “one-note, badly produced, weakly sung [and] horrendously under-written”.

Earlier this month, Drake picked up 10 nominations for this year’s BET Hip Hop Awards, including Best Live Performer, Lyricist Of The Year, Hip Hop Artist Of The Year and Hustler Of The Year.

The 17th annual BET Hip Hop Awards will take place on September 30 in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center. Hosted by Fat Joe, the ceremony will be televised at 9pm EDT on Tuesday October 4.

At this year’s BET Awards back in June, West made a surprise appearance to honour Sean “Diddy” Combs, as the rapper and producer received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The event also saw Lil Nas X express dismay at being excluded from the list of nominations, the rapper saying his “relationship with BET has been painful and strained for quite some time”.

BET then responded to Lil Nas X, explaining that no one at the awards body was on the voting panel. “Unfortunately, this year, he was not nominated by BET’s Voting Academy, which is comprised of an esteemed group of nearly 500 entertainment professionals,” the organisation’s statement read. “No one from BET serves as a member of the Voting Academy.

Drake breaks The Beatles’ record for most Top Five singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart

Drake has been crowned the artist with the most Top Five singles on the US’ Billboard Hot 100 chart, breaking a record held previously by The Beatles.

  • READ MORE: Drake – ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ review: rapper’s house makeover provides long-overdue career boost

The feat was achieved by proxy of a guest spot on DJ Khaled‘s latest single, ‘Staying Alive’, which arrived on the Friday before last (August 5) and, in addition to heavy sampling of the Bee Gees‘ 1977 hit of the same name, also featured bars from Lil Baby. The song made its chart debut at Number Five on the most recent edition of the Hot 100 (dated for the week ending August 20), which Billboard says earned Drake his 30th Top Five single.

A count through his Hot 100 history, though, shows that Drake has actually accumulated 31 Top Five releases. The rapper’s first song to chart in the bracket was his second single, 2009’s ‘Best I Ever Had’, which peaked at Number Two. He followed it up with ‘Thank Me Later’ cut ‘Find Your Love’ in 2010, the same year he earned his first Number One as a featured artist on ‘What’s My Name?’ by Rihanna. His first Number One as a lead artist came in 2016 with the Kyla– and Wizkid-assisted ‘One Dance’.

Of his cumulative 31 Top Five hits, 11 peaked in the top spot (including three songs where Drake was billed as a featured artist) while eight have peaked at Number Two (including one feature), four at Number Three (with two features), three at Number Four (all of which were Drake’s own songs) and five at Number Five (with four features).

By comparison, The Beatles earned their 29 Top Five singles within the span of five years (compared to Drake’s 14), and beat his metrics with 20 songs at Number One, three each at Number Two and Number Three, two at Number Four and one at Number Five. Additionally, all of their Top Five hits came with the Fab Four billed as the lead artist. This doesn’t take into account any charting songs released by, or featuring, individual members of The Beatles.

Earlier this month, Drake performed alongside Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne at the monumental Young Money reunion concert in Toronto. It came in the same week that he released ‘Staying Alive’ with Khalid, as well as a music video for recent solo cut ‘Sticky’.

The song appears on Drake’s seventh album, ‘Honestly, Nevermind’, which arrived back in June. The record earned a three-star review from NME’s Kyann-Sian Williams, who described the album as “an unexpected elevation from the bland trap” heard on last year’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’.

Meanwhile, stalwart filmmaker Peter Jackson has announced that he’s working on a “very different” project related to The Beatles. In a recent interview, the director revealed that he’s in talks with McCartney and Ringo Starr – who he last worked with on the Emmy-nominated docuseries The Beatles: Get Backto develop a new film.

Announced less than a month ago, the show rounded out a trilogy of shows Drake hosted for his ‘October World Weekend’, a concert series that the rapper said precedes the worldwide expansion of his music festival, OVO Fest. It was initially scheduled to go down on Monday (August 1), but was pushed back five days after Drake tested positive for COVID-19.

The show itself started later than scheduled. When it did begin, a message on the screens flaking the stage read: “Unfortunately, Lil Wayne had some troubles at the border. Luckily, Drake runs the border.”

At one point in the show, Drake gave a heartfelt shoutout to both of his colleagues: “I’m standing onstage with the greatest rapper of all time,” he said, pointing to Lil Wayne. “And I’m standing onstage with the other greatest rapper of all time, she’s over there with the pink hair. By the way, like, are these bitches serious? Like, nobody can fuck with Nicki… [She’s] like the originator – it starts here, ends here, all that shit.”

Towards the end of the show, too, Lil Wayne formally announced that his forthcoming 15th studio album would be ‘Tha Carter VI’, sharing its logo on the main screen behind the stage. A release date for that is yet to be confirmed, however.

Have a look at some fan-shot footage from the concert below:

Meanwhile, Drake has kept busy this week with the release of his ‘Sticky’ music video – wherein he showed support for Young Thug and Gunna, as they continue to fight against their recent gang-related charges – and his DJ Khaled and Lil Baby joint ‘Staying Alive’. Last week, he joined Nelly Furtado onstage at the first ‘October World Weekend’ gig to perform ‘I’m Like A Bird’ with her.

Minaj, on the other hand, is gearing up to drop her new single ‘Freaky Girl’ next Thursday (August 11). It’ll mark her fifth release for the year, following the Lil Baby joints ‘Do We Have A Problem?’ and ‘Bussin’, ‘Blick Blick’ with Coi Leray and ‘We Go Up’ with Fivio Foreign. Later in the year, she’ll premiere the autobiographical docu-series Nicki on HBO Max.

Last month, Lil Wayne paid tribute to Robert Hoobler, a former New Orleans police officer who saved the rapper’s life following a suicide attempt when he was a child. In addition to ‘Tha Carter VI’, he’s said to be working on a third album in his ‘I Am Not A Human Being’ series. The last instalment arrived in 2013, while ‘Tha Carter V’ came out in 2018.

Meanwhile, Drake responded to reports he took a 14-minute-long flight on his private jet, sparking backlash earlier this week.

Last week, the Twitter account @CelebJets, which tracks celebrities’ flights, tweeted that Drake’s jet had gone from his native Toronto to Hamilton – both in the state of Ontario – with the journey covering only 38 miles, and taking just 14 minutes. According to the account, the flight used 1,522 litres of fuel, and was responsible for four tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Now, Drake has clarified the incredibly brief flight. “This is just them moving planes to whatever airport they are being stored at for anyone who was interested in the logistics,” Drizzy wrote, commenting on a post about the controversy from the Instagram account of Real Toronto News. “Nobody takes that flight.”

According to the account, the flight used 1,522 litres of fuel, and was responsible for four tonnes of CO2 emissions.

The rapper faced strong criticism for the alleged journey, with many on social media expressing outrage about the environmental impact of such a brief trip. The Guardian included the flight in an article about celebrities taking short rides, criticising other brief air trips by the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian and Mark Wahlberg.

“Canadians will complain about climate change then pay thousands to go to the next Drake concert, acting like he isn’t taking his private jet on flights from Hamilton to Toronto,” wrote Toronto tech reporter Temur Durrani on Twitter, linking to The Guardian‘s story.

“Drake is part of the problem, taking multiple 15 minute flights to Hamilton and back while the environment is collapsing,” Toronto-based writer and filmmaker Jesse Hawken tweeted. “Dude, take the GO train ffs.”

It’s not the first time Drake has faced flak recently. Earlier this month, the rapper was criticised over the ticket prices for an upcoming Young Money reunion concert he’s staging in Toronto in August, featuring the likes of Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne.

The rapper’s new Beverly Hills mansion was recently subject to an alleged break-in by a man claiming to be his son. An employee at the mansion spotted the 23-year-old intruder near the pool on July 15. Police arrived and arrested the man for misdemeanour trespassing.

Live Nation claim “no liability” in Drakeo The Ruler stabbing

Live Nation has claimed “no liability” in the death of Drakeo The Ruler at Once Upon A Time in LA last year.

Drakeo was fatally stabbed during an altercation backstage at the festival, which took place at the Banc of California and Exposition Park on December 18.

Drakeo’s family including his brother, mother and son have all filed lawsuits against Live Nation, who put on the festival, on Drakeo’s behalf. The family are seeking $20million (£15million) in damages.

In response to Drakeo’s mother Darrylene Corniel’s lawsuit, Live Nation had referred to an existing statement from the organisers of the festival which read: “Once Upon A Time In LA joins Drakeo’s family, friends, and fans in grieving his loss. The festival is continuing to support local authorities in their investigation as they pursue the facts.”

Now in a new filing made public earlier this week, viewed by Rolling Stone, Live Nation is legally fighting back against all lawsuits, claiming it has “no liability” in the rapper’s death at the festival.

Live Nation went on to say they cannot be held responsible for the “violent mob” of 50-100 people with weapons, who killed Drakeo minutes before he went on stage.

They added the company has “no duty” to prevent “third party” criminal activity as there had been no violent incidents like this before at their festivals.

Live Nation also said Drakeo The Ruler’s team did not ask the festival for “additional security” or make clear to festival security that he may possibly be at risk.

Last week, speculation on social media suggested that the Canadian star had been taken into custody by local police at a Stockholm nightclub.

XXL claimed that Drake and members of his security team were allegedly arrested. The outlet also noted that the term “free Drake” was trending on Twitter.

A representative for the rapper at the time confirmed that the rumours were false.

But in a new post on Instagram, Drake appeared to suggest that he did in fact have some interaction with Swedish authorities.

He shared a photo of a document from the Swedish National Police Board, titled “Information for Those Suspected of a Crime and Subsequently Detained.”

It went on to detail a detainee’s rights, similar to the Miranda Rights used in the United States.

They included knowing “what it is you are suspected of and why you are being denied” and receiving “the aid of a defense attorney who under certain conditions can only be paid by the state.”

It also stated that “an interrogation will be held with you as soon as possible” and “if the prosecutor requests a court trial, you will be notified of this at once”.

NME has contacted a spokesperson for Drake for further comment.

Meanwhile, Drake made an unannounced appearance in Ibiza at the weekend, showing up onstage during Black Coffee’s gig at the Hï Ibiza nightclub.

Last week, he also announced the first three events of a new concert series dubbed ‘October World Weekend’, which the rapper said will precede the worldwide expansion of his own music festival, OVO Fest. Tickets for the dates went on sale on Friday (July 15), and promptly had fans outraged over the pricing for one that boasts a Nicki Minaj– and Lil Wayne-led Young Money reunion.

The two artists have been connected since 2017, when Drake featured Black Coffee on the ‘More Life’ cut ‘Get It Together’ (which also incorporated elements of the latter’s own song ‘Superman’). For Drake’s recent seventh album, ‘Honestly, Nevermind’, Black Coffee co-produced the songs ‘Currents’ and ‘Overdrive’, and also performed drums on the latter.

Black Coffee has been performing at Hï Ibiza weekly since mid-May, DJing in the club’s main theatre every Saturday as part of a residency spanning four and a half months. Drake made a surprise drop-in at this week’s gig, joining Black Coffee onstage when the latter spun ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ track ‘Massive’.

Though he didn’t actually perform the track with Black Coffee, Drake could be seen vibing out to the song and partying with the Grammy-winning DJ. Have a look at footage below:

Drake released ‘Honestly, Nevermind’, back in June. It received a three-star review from NME’s Kyann-Sian Williams, who described the album as “an unexpected elevation from the bland trap” of its predecessor, last year’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’, and noted that “the house sound has at least given [Drake] the creative boost that his recording career has been crying out for recently”.

Drake fans outraged at cost of tickets for his Young Money Reunion show

Fans have taken to social media to complain about the ticket prices for Drake’s recently announced Young Money reunion show.

  • READ MORE: Drake – ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ review: rapper’s house makeover provides long-overdue career boost

Announced earlier this week, Drake is set to put on a series of shows in Toronto (dubbed the ‘October World Weekend’) ahead of the worldwide expansion of his OVO Fest.

Alongside an All Canadian North Stars show and a gig headlined by Chris Brown and Lil Baby, Drake is also putting on a Young Money reunion, with Nicki Minaj and Young Money Entertainment boss Lil Wayne set to appear.

However, after tickets went on sale Friday (July 15), fans took to Twitter to complain about the sky high prices.

As it stands, resale and “Platinum” tickets for the show at the Budweiser Stage on August 1 are available on Ticketmaster for CA$573 (£370), with the most expensive seat currently costing CA$1480 (£958).

“If Ticketmaster really think they could charge me $750 for OVO fest lawn tickets they best be performing on MY lawn,” wrote one fan.

“The prices of the #ovofest tickets…… Drake tell me you’re out of touch with reality without telling me you’re out of touch with reality. Are you even aware of the cost of living in Toronto now,” wrote another.

“Drake needs to read the room because who the fuck is paying those prices at a time like this,” said another fan.

However, one fan pointed out that originally, tickets were available from CA$120 (£77) and topped out at CA$300 (£194) until Ticketmaster’s surge pricing kicked in.

According to Ticketmaster, these so-called Platinum Tickets are “tickets that are dynamically priced up and down based on demand” and are made available “by artists and event organisers”.

Earlier this week, Drake‘s team was forced to deny reports that the rapper was recently arrested in Sweden after “Free Drake” started trending online.

Roger Waters hits out at The Weeknd and Drake: “I am far, far, far more important than any of them will ever be”

Pink Floyd‘s Roger Waters has hit out at The Weeknd and Drake, saying that he is “far, far, far more important than any of them will ever be”.

In a recent interview with Toronto’s The Globe and Mail, Waters asked the interviewer why his recent shows in the Canadian city weren’t reviewed by the publication or any others in the area.

He was then told that The Weeknd was set to open his ‘After Hours ‘Til Dawn’ tour in Toronto on the same night (the show ended up being cancelled due to power outages in the region).

Waters then responded: “I have no idea what or who the Weeknd is, because I don’t listen to much music. People have told me he’s a big act. Well, good luck to him. I’ve got nothing against him. Would it not have been possible to review his show one night and my show another night?”

He went on: “I’m not trying to make a personal attack. I’m just saying it seemed odd. And, by the way, with all due respect to the Weeknd or Drake or any of them, I am far, far, far more important than any of them will ever be, however many billions of streams they’ve got. There is stuff going on here that is fundamentally important to all of our lives.”

After The Weeknd postponed his Toronto show, the star – real name Abel Tesfaye – flew out a six-year-old superfan to his Philadelphia tour opener this week (July 14).

After the hometown show and planned tour curtain raiser was postponed due to a nationwide power outage of Canada’s main telecommunications company, Rogers, footage went viral on Twitter of a young fan dressed as The Weeknd from the ‘Blinding Lights’ video crying and being consoled outside the venue.

The Weeknd then made a callout online for someone to identify the child in question, who was then revealed to be six-year-old Phoenix Prince.

In an interview with CBC, Prince’s father Blake said: “Phoenix was getting attention with his suit. We had a breakdown moment. He got upset over the fact the show was postponed, and somebody captured a picture.”

After the Toronto cancellation, The Weeknd’s tour then began in Philadelphia on Thursday night (July 14), and the pop star flew Phoenix and his father out as special guests to the show, posing backstage and getting his ‘Blinding Lights’ suit signed.

Sharing photos on Instagram, Blake wrote: “I wouldn’t be able to put this last week into words if I tried. We are forever grateful for this moment. We are beyond thankful to Abel and his beautiful crew for their friendship, hospitality, generosity and for spending day with Phoenix and I. He will cherish this experience forever. Thank you a million times over.”

‘After Hours Til Dawn’ will take The Weeknd next to New York, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles and more. New support acts for his upcoming North American stadium concerts were recently announced after Doja Cat was forced to pull out.

The outfit are currently on the North American leg of their ‘DNA’ world tour, which kicked off in April. They’ve still got another two months of North American shows to go before heading over to Europe and the UK for a run of shows throughout October and November.

Drake released his seventh studio album ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ last week, just hours after announcing it.

The record was executive produced by Drake himself, Noah “40” Shebib, Oliver El-Khatib, Noel Cadastre and South African producer and DJ Black Coffee, whom Drake worked with on 2017 project ‘More Life’. It also featured production credits from DJ Carnage, aka Gordo, who worked on six of its 14 tracks.

NME awarded the album three stars in a review, calling it a “long-overdue career boost”.

“‘Honestly, Nevermind’ is an unexpected elevation from the bland trap, R&B remakes and Drake’s melancholic attitude to love we heard last time around,” wrote NME‘s Kyann-Sian Williams.

“He doesn’t quite shift the latter as much as one would hope – the album is as tiresomely woe-is-me as anything he’s ever done – but the house sound has at least given him the creative boost that his recording career has been crying out for recently.”

‘Fake Drake’ wants to box real Drake for $1million and a record deal

The Drake impersonator known as ‘Fake Drake’ has stated his ambition to enter a boxing match with the real rapper.

  • READ MORE: Drake – ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ review: rapper’s house makeover provides long-overdue career boost

The copycat has attracted attention recently for attending a number of events designed to fool members of the public into mistaking him for the multi-platinum-selling Canadian star, including nightclub appearances.

Speaking on the We In Miami podcast, ‘Fake Drake’ said: “I’m challenging Drake to a boxing match. I just signed with Celebrity Boxing. If you win, I’ll change my name from Izzy Drake to just Izzy, you know.”

If he defeats Drake in the match, Izzy is asking the rapper for $1million and a deal with Drake’s record label OVO, “’cause I’m just trying to feed my family.”

Watch the interview below.

Last month, ‘Fake Drake’ spoke out publicly, claiming that his style and personality is all his own, despite booking a variety of public events based on his supposed visual likeness to the rapper.

Speaking on Instagram, Fake Drake said: “This is just who I am. I’m just like, I’m just going with the flow, you know? I didn’t ask to become famous.” The women asking him questions in the clip suggest that Fake Drake both looks and acts like Drake, to which he responds: “I act like Drake?”

Fake Drake also audaciously implied that his haircut, matching the OVO artist’s distinctive heart-shaped style, was his own idea.

“I’ve had the heart for like a year and a half,” he claimed. “Nah, ’cause I have the heart because you know, if you do things with your heart it’s come back.”

Elsewhere, the real Drake released new album ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ this month, breaking an Apple Music record within an hour of its release and going on to earn his 11th US Number One album, moving past Kanye West and Eminem to tie Bruce Springsteen and Barbara Streisand for the third-most Number Ones in Billboard 200 history, trailing only The Beatles (19) and JAY-Z (14).

Reviewing the album, NME wrote: “Arriving so quickly after his last body of work, as most Drake releases often do, ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ is an unexpected elevation from the bland trap, R&B remakes and Drake’s melancholic attitude to love we heard last time around.

“He doesn’t quite shift the latter as much as one would hope – the album is as tiresomely woe-is-me as anything he’s ever done – but the house sound has at least given him the creative boost that his recording career has been crying out for recently.”

‘Honestly, Nevermind’ producer Gordo talks house music influence on new Drake album: “We started it”

Gordo, a producer on Drake’s new album ‘Honestly, Nevermind’, has opened up about the house music influences heard on the recently released record.

In a new interview with GQ, Gordo – formerly known as Carnage – spoke of the house-inspired beats that feature heavily on Drake’s latest offering.

“There’s always been this weird thing in the dance world where the majority of DJs are white,” the DJ-producer said to GQ. “But we all know that house music back in the day in Chicago and Detroit comes from the Black community and gay community.”

Gordo added: “We started it, and now, you know, all the biggest stars and DJs in the entire world, the majority of them, are white”.

Touching upon the general sound of the album, Gordo revealed: “Me and Drake are both tired of sad or angry music. We want to make people dance and have a good time.”

Gordo also spoke of ‘Sticky’, which he produced for the album, sharing that he came up with the beat while on a plane. “I texted [Drake], and when he replied at 4pm I was already in the kitchen at his house. I played him the beat and he was like, ‘Woah’”.

He also noted that J. Cole – who was at Drake’s house playing basketball at the time – walked in, and the group recorded the track “that night”.

Drake released ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ on Friday (June 17) just hours after announcing the record. The album – his seventh to date – shattered the record for first-day streams worldwide for a dance album on Apple Music just an hour after its release.

‘Honestly, Nevermind’ received a three-star review from NME’s Kyann-Sian Williams, who described the album as “an unexpected elevation from the bland trap”. “The house sound has at least given him the creative boost that his recording career has been crying out for recently,” Williams added.

The star then gave a shout out to Kenza, adding: “Me and Kenza have a book coming out this year […], a poetry book.”

As for his next musical project, Drake revealed: “I got another ‘Scary Hours’ pack coming too, in a little bit. Maybe not right now; I need you to just take this [‘Honestly, Nevermind’] in right now.

“But I have a ‘Scary Hours’ – I’m gonna slap some head tops off with the ‘Scary Hours’ pack. I love this shit.”

Drake released the two-track ‘Scary Hours’ EP – comprised of ‘God’s Plan’ and ‘Diplomatic Immunity’ – in 2018, with the former track going on to appear on his fifth full-length album ‘Scorpion’.

‘Scary Hours II’, which features Lil Baby and Rick Ross, followed in March 2021. The EP made US chart history, with Drake becoming the first artist to debut in the top three spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in its first week.

PETA call on Jack Harlow and Drake to donate ‘Churchill Downs’ profits to help racehorses

PETA has called on Jack Harlow and Drake to donate the profits from the video to their collaboration ‘Churchill Downs’ to aid racehorses.

The stars recently teamed up on the track, which appears on Harlow’s album ‘Come Home The Kids Miss You’, and attended the Kentucky Derby horse racing event. – as seen in its accompanying music video.

  • READ MORE: Jack Harlow – ‘Come Home The Kids Miss You’ review: storytelling charm and filler tracks

PETA – which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – has issued a statement about the rappers’ video and attendance at the event. Noting that the horse that win this year’s Kentucky Derby was “struck in the face shortly after crossing the finish line”, the organisation said: “Jack Harlow and Drake have chosen to glamourise horse racing with their new ‘Churchill Downs’ video.

“In response, PETA is calling on Harlow to donate the song’s proceeds toward caring for thoroughbreds discarded by the industry, which exports 7,500 of them for slaughter every year.”

PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo said: “Jack Harlow’s glamourised portrayal of horse racing is missing the whips, drugs and deaths that run rampant in the industry. Profiting from the abuse of others is never acceptable and PETA is calling on Jack Harlow to pony up and pay for the care of American Thoroughbreds who would otherwise be shipped to foreign slaughterhouses. The one sure thing in horse racing is that the horses always lose.”

Neither Harlow nor Drake have publicly responded to PETA’s plea at the time of writing.

Meanwhile, last week Lil Uzi Vert defended Jack Harlow after his chart success came into question following a slew of poor reviews of ‘Come Home The Kids Miss You’. The record debuted at Number Three on The Billboard 200 and peaked at the same position on the Official UK Albums Chart.

Asked if Harlow’s success was down to “white privilege”, Vert replied: “Nah, he doesn’t have white privilege…nah, he’s signed to Black people.”

In a three-star review, NME said: “He’s always ready to deliver straight bars, a feat Jack Harlow again proves he’s great at on ‘Come Home The Kids Miss You’. However – and the same can be said of ‘THATS WHAT THEY ALL SAY’ – the record doesn’t feature a bunch of seminal tracks, instead packing filler between his knockout singles such as ‘First Class’. You’ll find a gem or two here and there, but this collection’s longevity is questionable.”

The south London rapper and musician performed at the History venue in Drake’s home city as part of his 2022 North American headline tour. Dave is out on the road in support of ‘We’re All Alone In This Together’, which came out last July.

Dave and Drake delivered a live rendition of their 2016 collaboration ‘Wanna Know’ as well as a joint version of Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’ track ‘Knife Talk’.

Speaking to the audience, Drake hailed Dave as a “once-in-a-generation talent”. The latter artist appeared in season one of Top Boy – the hit show Drake brought back in 2019 following a six-year hiatus.

It was reported earlier this month that Drake has signed a huge new deal with Universal Music Group. He’s believed to be currently working on material in the studio.

Machine Gun Kelly says Drake was nearly in his new movie

Machine Gun Kelly has revealed that Drake almost made an appearance in his forthcoming film, Good Mourning.

The film, Kelly’s directorial debut, is set to feature a ‘Fake Drake’ doppelgänger, and the artist – real name Colson Baker – has now revealed that he was close to getting the actual Drake to play the role.

  • READ MORE: Machine Gun Kelly: “I’ve been jumping up and down on the table, believing in myself, for-fucking-ever”

Speaking with his collaborator Mod Sun on the Audacy Check In series, Kelly discussed how Drake was almost cast himself.

“Drake was initially going to be Drake in the movie, and the schedules kept [conflicting,]” he said. “Every day that Drake could actually do it, cause when you shoot a movie every day is planned, and so we had it where, ‘Oh Drake could come this day this is what it’s gonna be,’ and the house owner couldn’t let up their house for that night, and it had to be at this place because we were very like set on every location that we found.”

He added: “The second time when Drake could do it, he was in Toronto, and he was like, ‘If you send a jet we can get there on time,’ and we were like, ‘ahh but this isn’t a Marvel movie budget.’ We would have to spend the whole movie budget on this jet.”

Last month, the first trailer for Good Mourning was shared ahead of its release this Friday (May 20).

First announced last August, the film is a stoner comedy that Baker co-wrote, directed and stars in alongside fellow musician Mod Sun, fiancée Megan Fox and close friend Pete Davidson. It’ll land simultaneously in cinemas and on demand, though it’s not clear as of yet which platform will host the film’s digital release.

Baker stars in the film as London Clash, an actor in the midst of an existential crisis. So the logline goes, Clash’s “world is turned upside down” when, on the morning of a crucial meeting with the director of a Batman film, he “wakes up to an implied breakup text from the love of his life”.

The synopsis for Good Mourning continues: “Compounded by chaotic roommates and wildly unpredictable twists and turns, London’s day keeps going downhill until ultimately, he is forced to choose between pursuing his one true love and landing a life-changing, starring role in a major motion picture.”

Good Mourning will mark Baker’s third film for 2022, following his cameo in Jackass Forever and a starring role in the music drama Taurus. It’ll also mark his third time linking up with Pete Davidson, having made cameos in Big Time Adolescence and The King Of Staten Island.

Kelly released his album ‘Mainstream Sellout’ last month, and will be supported by Avril Lavigne and Blink-182’s Travis Barker on a 41-date US arena tour behind the album.

Drake’s producer Noah ‘40’ Shebib subject of new documentary

Noah ‘40’ Shebib, a producer known for his work with Drake, is the subject of a new short documentary called Toronto Rising.

The firm, directed by Alim Sabir, is about the producer’s life, from his early career working with Drake to his recent years living with multiple sclerosis.

Toronto Rising includes rare footage from 40’s life, with the film giving a tour of Toronto, visiting studios past and present and including discussions with some of his collaborators.

Speaking of his multiple sclerosis diagnosis, the producer said: “I’ve always considered myself a visitor in hip-hop. When I was 21, I got diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I learned a lesson in the hospital, which was that as long as I had at least one finger that still worked, no matter what the world took from me, I could play the keyboard and I could make music.

“All the things in my life just kind of pointed me in one direction. I’m here to play my part and to leave my impact, but from my perspective, I was a guest and I was really just looking to be accepted.”

Along with Drake, 40 is one of the three co-founders of the OVO Sound label and has produced all of the Canadian rapper’s albums so far.

He has also worked with artists like Lil Wayne, Alicia Keys, Action Bronson, and Jamie Foxx and has won two Grammy Awards over his career – for Drake’s 2011 album ‘Take Care’ and 2018 single ‘God’s Plan’.

Last year, 40 issued a statement about R. Kelly‘s inclusion on the Toronto rapper’s new album, ‘Certified Lover Boy’.

“On a song called tsu at the beginning is a sample of OG Ron c talking,” he said on Instagram. “Behind that faintly which you can’t even hear is an r Kelly song playing in the background. It has no significance no lyrics are present, r Kelly’s voice isn’t even present but if we wanted to use Ron c talking we were forced to license it.”

He continued: “Doesn’t sit well with me let me just say that. And I’m not here to defend drakes lyrics, but I thought I would clear up that there is no actual r Kelly present and it’s a bit misleading to call him a co lyricist.”

In other recent Drake news, Future and Drake shared the medieval-inspired new video for their collaboration ‘Wait For U’ earlier this month.

Drakeo The Ruler’s brother slams Grammys for snubbing rapper in memoriam segment

Drakeo The Ruler‘s brother has called out the Recording Academy for not including the late rapper in the 2022 Grammys In Memoriam segment.

Drakeo, real name Darrell Caldwell, died in December of 2021 when he was fatally stabbed during an altercation at Los Angeles’ Once Upon A Time In L.A. concert. He was 28-years-old.

“It comes off as a spit in the face disregarding the facts that we’ve created an entire movement that generated the momentum for underground, emerging L.A. artists to have a platform,” Caldwell’s brother, who goes by Ralfy The Plug told TMZ.

He continued: “Leaving Drakeo out of their tribute and by not giving him any acknowledgement of his existence sums up exactly what we feel the industry has been trying to do. Erase us.”

Ralfy is among friends and family who have called out concert promoters and event producers following the rapper’s death.

In February, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed against Live Nation on behalf of Drakeo the Ruler’s five-year-old son.

In the suit, which was filed in LA on February 2, Live Nation is named as a defendant alongside co-promoters C3 Presents, Bobby Dee Presents and Jeff Shuman, while Los Angeles Football Club (the owners of the Banc of California Stadium) are also named.

The late rapper’s mother Darrylene Corniel has already sued Live Nation, which organised Once Upon A Time In LA, over Drakeo’s death. The family are seeking $20million (£15million) in damages.

In response to that suit, Live Nation referred to an existing statement from the organisers of the festival which read: “Once Upon A Time In LA joins Drakeo’s family, friends, and fans in grieving his loss. The festival is continuing to support local authorities in their investigation as they pursue the facts.”

They then bring Janardo Laporte, an entertainer at the Grace Bay Club, into the video, whose rendition of ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home’ “actually made me a little self-conscious,” Drake admits. “It’s better than the OG, I’m not gonna lie.”

The trio play roulette on the crypto gambling platform, Stake, after which Drake asks Laporte what he would do with the money. “I got three kids. So I wanna do something for my kids. And enhance my music career a little bit.”

The Toronto rapper then hands Laporte $20,000 in cash, who is visibly blown away. “I wasn’t expecting this, I was on my way home!” he said. At the end of the video Laporte performs a snippet of ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home’.

Earlier this week, Drake was seen gifting one lucky fan $10,000 (£7,600) in cash for his birthday (via Billboard). “My boy was celebrating his birthday in Turks and Caicos and got $10K from Drake as a birthday present,” the caption on a Snapchat clip read.

In other news, Drake is planning “highly interactive” shows in New York and Toronto.

During a broadcast on Sound 42, OVO Sound’s Sirius XM radio station, the rapper said:“I’m excited to let all my people know that we’re working on something really special for you guys.”

He continued: “Putting together two shows, one in New York and a few in Toronto. They’re gonna be something different, something that I’ve never done before. Gonna be a highly interactive experience.

“My brothers will be there, it’s gonna be great to see y’all, hopefully get a chance to speak with you, [and] hopefully learn a little more about each other. I’ll have the dates for that coming soon, I can’t wait.”

Drake is planning some “highly interactive shows” in New York and Toronto

Drake is planning “highly interactive” shows in New York and Toronto, the rapper has revealed in a new radio show.

The star was talking during a broadcast on Sound 42, OVO Sound’s Sirius XM radio station, when he shared the news.

“I’m excited to let all my people know that we’re working on something really special for you guys,” Drake told listeners. “Putting together two shows, one in New York and a few in Toronto. They’re gonna be something different, something that I’ve never done before. Gonna be a highly interactive experience.”

He continued: “My brothers will be there, it’s gonna be great to see y’all, hopefully get a chance to speak with you, [and] hopefully learn a little more about each other. I’ll have the dates for that coming soon, I can’t wait.”

The gigs will be Drake’s first headline performances since 2019, when he made appearances at numerous festivals including Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival, Rock In Rio and his own OVO Fest. That year also saw him hold the ‘Assassination Vacation’ tour in the UK and Europe.

The Canadian star made an appearance at his friend and collaborator The Weeknd’s 32nd birthday celebrations in Las Vegas last month. Drake gave a heartfelt speech at the party, saying: “I was there from day one and I’m grateful not only to be here with my brothers but just grateful that the family is back together where we belong from the greatest city in the world.”

Meanwhile, last Christmas, the rapper reportedly surprised Toronto residents by handing out stacks of cash to random people. “[Drake] giving away racks for Christmas,” one person captioned a video of the rapper sitting the back in the back of a Maybach as the poster flaunted a thick stack of $20 bills. “Life’s fucking unreal man. Legend of the city.”

XXXTentacion’s ‘?’ passes Drake’s ‘Scorpion’ to become Spotify’s most streamed hip-hop album in history

XXXTentacion‘s 2018 album ‘?’ has become the most streamed hip-hop album in Spotify history, surpassing Drake’s 2018 LP, ‘Scorpion’.

  • READ MORE: XXXTentacion’s death has sparked debate about art, abuse and the media

Chart Data reported that as of last November, ‘Scorpion’ was ahead of ‘?’ by nearly one billion streams. XXXTentacion’s second studio album has since reached 7.884billion plays on the platform, with Drake currently sitting at 7.883bn.

‘?’ was released in March 2018, giving the rapper his first Number One on the Billboard 200 albums chart. His track ‘Sad!’ topped the US singles chart a week on from his death, which made him the first artist to earn a posthumous number one single as a lead artist in the US since Notorious B.I.G. in 1997 with ‘Mo Money Mo Problems’.

The rapper, whose real name was Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, was shot and killed at a motorcycle dealership in Broward County, Florida on June 18, 2018. He was 20 years old. The news from Chart Data comes four years after his death.

XXXTentacion’s estate continued to release his music posthumously, including the albums ‘Skins’ and ‘Bad Vibes Forever’, the latter of which NME awarded three stars in a review.

Reviewing XXXTentacion’s latest posthumous release, NME wrote: “‘Bad Vibes Forever’ is better than ‘Skins’, the first XXXTentacion album released after the rapper’s death, but all of his posthumous music to date has fallen short.

“Even if you do hate XXXTentacion, you cannot deny his influence on modern rap. But ‘Bad Vibes Forever’ is a serious case of over-embellishing thin material.”

Elsewhere, it was announced that a new documentary about the late rapper titled Look At Me! will make its premiere at this year’s SXSW festival.

The film — directed by Sabaah Folayan and produced by FADER Films — was announced earlier this month. “Look At Me! explores how Florida teenager Jahseh Onfroy became SoundCloud rapper XXXTENTACION, one of the most streamed artists on the planet,” reads the film’s synopsis.

The documentary will debut at the film festival segment of SXSW, which takes place in Austin, Texas, from March 11 to March 20.

Drake feature seemingly axed from Gunna’s new album ‘DS4Ever’

Gunna dropped his star-studded third album ‘DS4Ever’ earlier today (January 7), though it’s missing a previously announced Drake feature.

  • READ MORE: Young Stoner Life – ‘Slime Language 2’ review: follow-up record doesn’t quite stick

When the Young Thug-signed rapper shared the album’s tracklist earlier this week, Drizzy was listed as a featured artist on a track called ‘Pussy Power’. It appears to be only song on ‘DS4Ever’ scrapped from its streaming release – which spans a weighty 19 tracks – with the likes of 21 Savage, Kodak Black, Lil Baby and Roddy Ricch all appearing as promised.

It wouldn’t be the first time Drake was missing from a tracklist he’d previously been announced on. Back in November, it was confirmed that Drake’s feature on French Montana‘s ‘Splash Brothers’ would be cut from the latter’s new album, ‘They Got Amnesia’.

That decision reportedly came down to the recent Astroworld tragedy, though fans also pointed to a line in the track appearing to diss Kanye West and Kim Kardashian – “I fuck a rapper’s wife/ She ain’t even my type but I make the sacrifice” – with speculation arising that Drake had the track cut after he and West ended their feud.

Earlier in 2021, Drake was announced as part of the tracklist for Trippie Redd’s fourth album, ‘Trip At Knight’. His track, ‘Betrayal’, wasn’t found on the album’s initial release, though it did appear on a subsequent reissue. Notably, ‘Betrayal’ was infamous for reigniting Drake’s feud with West back in August.

Gunna dropped ‘DS4Ever’ via 300 and YSL records. It was flanked by the lead single ‘Too Easy’, which features one of the album’s three guest spots from Future.

It comes after a stacked year for Gunna, which saw him release or appear on a total of 23 singles – including ‘Waves’ with Polo G, ‘Why Why’ with Doja Cat and ‘Pay The Fine’ with Young Thug – as well as a new YSL compilation titled ‘Slime Language 2’.

In a three-star review of the compilation, NME’s Kyann-Sian Williams said: “YSL will have put smiles on many faces here. But ‘Slime Language’ was such a seminal release for the new hip-hop label, and ‘SL2’ doesn’t reach new highs, despite big rappers helping out (Kid Cudi, NAV and Travis Scott all appear). The album peaks quite early – perhaps with a few tweaks to the tracklist, the new stars of YSL could have had a little more time to shine.”

Last month, it was announced that Gunna would appear alongside Lil Yachty, Rosalía, Vampire Weekend‘s Ezra Koenig and more in the forthcoming HBO series Chillin Island.

The reality show will be hosted by a trio of rappers – Definitive Jux member Alec ‘Despot’ Reinstein, former Das Racist hypeman Ashok ‘Dap’ Kondabolu, and Aleksey ‘Lakutis’ Weintraub – as they take a range of musicians into the wilderness.

Drakeo The Ruler murder trial stalls as witnesses remain silent

The investigation into the murder of Drakeo The Ruler, who was fatally stabbed at a music festival last month, has stalled due to poor witness cooperation.

Drakeo, 28, was on the bill at Once Upon A Time In LA festival on December 18 and was reportedly stabbed in the neck by unknown assailant(s) backstage. He was taken to hospital but later died of his injuries.

According to TMZ, police “are mostly relying on surveillance and cellphone footage to crack the case,” saying that most witnesses to the incident have refused to come forward to speak to law enforcement.

In addition, police have started to explore another link, looking at the possibly that the rapper’s death is connected to the suspected gang-related murder of Compton rapper Slim 400 who was fatally shot on December 8.

The news follows Darrylene Corniel, Drakeo’s mother, saying last month that she intends to sue over her son’s death.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Corniel said: “I need this to be out there. I need people to know. And I do want justice for my son. And I do believe that justice will be served. I will not rest until justice is served.”

Corniel added that she believes that security at the Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park where the festival was held failed – and she intends to sue. “This happened backstage at an event. Someone has to be held accountable,” she said.

“We plan to sue,” Corniel said. “This happened backstage at an event. Someone has to be held accountable. He was hit in his neck. I saw him when I went to the hospital. They said it’s a homicide, so I wasn’t able to hug him or kiss him or anything like that. I had to look at him through a window.”

Drakeo the Ruler’s mother intends to file lawsuit over son’s death

The mother of Drakeo the Ruler, who died after being stabbed at the Once Upon a Time music festival in Los Angeles over the weekend, says she intends to sue over her son’s death.

Drakeo – real name Darrell Wayne Caldwell – was reportedly stabbed in the neck during an altercation at the festival on December 18, before being hospitalised and later declared dead the following day. The festival was subsequently shut down.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, the rapper’s mother, Darrylene Corniel, said, “I need this to be out there. I need people to know. And I do want justice for my son. And I do believe that justice will be served. I will not rest until justice is served.”

Corniel added that she belies security at the venue the festival was held at – the Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park – failed, and she intends to sue. “This happened backstage at an event. Someone has to be held accountable,” she said.

According to Rolling Stone, the incident took place in a backstage area where those who entered were meant to pass through a metal detector and a screening area. “They let all these people in, and you’re not supposed to have all these people backstage. And your security is supposed to be in place,” Corniel said.

“The whole program should have been orchestrated a lot better than what it was. And there should have been more protection. Even if you have metal detectors, even if you pat them down, you let those people come in there. You had more people come in than you were supposed to. And you allowed them to jump my son. You didn’t protect my son.”

In a statement to Rolling Stone, the event’s promoters, Live Nation, said they were “extremely saddened” by Caldwell’s passing and that they were “doing everything we can to assist authorities in their investigation”.

Earlier this week, Caldwell’s partner Noel Bianca spoke out for the first time since the rapper’s death. “You asked me last Monday. ‘So does this mean we are soulmates’,” she wrote. “They took my baby from me on my birthday. I will never be the same without u my rib. Thank u for the prayers. God give me strength.”

In a follow-up post, she said: “If I had one birthday wish it would be for my man to be bear hugging me one more time. He gave me the best hugs. I don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel right now. I just wish u were here Darrell.”

According to the LA Times, police are currently still searching for the person responsible for the stabbing. No arrests had been made as of Sunday morning (December 19).

“Detectives are still trying to figure things out,” Luis Garcia, an LAPD spokesperson, told the outlet.

Drakeo the Ruler released his debut album ‘The Truth Hurts’ this year after releasing 10 mixtapes between 2015 and 2021.

Drakeo The Ruler in critical condition after being stabbed at LA festival he was performing at

Drakeo The Ruler is in critical condition after being stabbed at Once Upon A Time in LA Festival on Saturday (December 18).

The rapper, 28, was booked to play the festival at Exposition Park alongside Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and 50 Cent. It’s claimed he was attacked by a group of people backstage.

The Los Angeles Times reports that authorities did not confirm the identity of the victim but that a person with direct knowledge of the incident told the publication that it was Drakeo the Ruler (real name Darrell Caldwell).

The festival was shut down due to the incident, with organisers writing on social media: “The Once Upon A Time In LA Fest is ending early. All performances are now over. Please head to the closest exit and head eastbound on MLK.”

One source said that a video captured the aftermath of the stabbing, and showed people running up on stage and security trying to break up a fight.

The music festival was running behind schedule. Snoop Dogg was scheduled to perform at 8.30pm but a DJ on the main stage had been playing for approximately 45 minutes. At about 9.20pm the backstage entrance appeared to be blocked to anyone but police officers.

Drakeo released his debut album ‘The Truth Hurts’ this year after releasing 10 mixtapes between 2015 and 2021.

In 2019 he was acquitted of felony murder and attempted murder charges in relation to a 2016 shooting death of a 24-year-old man, and was later retried on conspiracy charges. The rapper eventually struck a plea deal and was released from custody in November 2020.

Earlier this year he featured on Saweetie’s song ‘Risky’, taken from the singer’s ‘Pretty Summer Playlist: Season 1’ EP.

Kanye West and Drake’s benefit show will stream live on Amazon and Twitch

With just 24 hours to go until Kanye West and Drake unite for their ‘Free Larry Hoover’ concert, Amazon has announced it will stream the show live on its Prime Video and Twitch platforms.

  • READ MORE: From the archives – Kanye West vs Drake: a timeline of their beef

The benefit concert is set to go down tomorrow night (December 9) at the Los Angeles Coliseum, kicking off at 8pm. Tickets for the show are on sale via Ticketmaster, but for those unable to attend, Amazon will stream the entire performance, free of charge, in all countries that it (or Twitch) operates.

West will headline the show, confirming Drake’s appearance as a special guest last month. It came after the pair reunited a week earlier, squashing a beef that had run since as early as 2009. West had extended an olive branch to Drake at the start of November, inviting him to appear at the show to raise awareness and advocate for the freedom of Hoover, who is currently serving six life sentences for charges relating to gang activity.

“I believe this event will not only bring awareness to our cause but prove to people everywhere how much more we can accomplish when we lay our pride aside and come together,” West said at the time. Hoover’s son, Larry Hoover Jr, urged Drake to accept Ye’s peace offering, saying Drake is “a leader and leaders make decisions that people follow”.

After the latter had accepted West’s invitation, Hoover Jr. spoke about the show in an interview for the Murder Master Music Show. “We’re going to get the word out to as many people as we can,” he said. “We gotta let the powers that be know that we want Larry Hoover in our community. That’s gonna be a big way to do it. Plus we want to show people of other communities that we can come together in peace.”

Earlier this week, aerial footage captured by a photojournalist revealed that an ambitious stage is under construction for the show.

Drake has withdrawn his 2022 Grammy nominations

Drake has withdrawn his two Grammy nominations for the forthcoming 2022 ceremony.

  • READ MORE: Grammys nominations 2022: Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Justin Bieber, Olivia Rodrigo and J. Cole lead with most nods

The rapper was up for Best Rap Album for ‘Certified Lover Boy‘ and Best Rap Performance for his song ‘Way 2 Sexy’ featuring Future and Young Thug.

But the rapper and his management have withdrawn both nominations and there will be no replacement nominees in the two categories, according to Variety.

It is unclear as to why Drake has withdrawn his nominations at this stage.

It comes after the Recording Academy rescinded the names of Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff and Annie Clark – aka St. Vincent – as part of the list of nominees on Olivia Rodrigo‘s 2022 Album Of The Year Grammy nomination for her debut ‘Sour’.

Swift, Antonoff and Clark were originally listed as part of the credited writers for the nomination, given Swift’s 2019 single ‘Cruel Summer’ was interpolated on Rodrigo’s top-five 2021 single ‘deja vu’.

Both Swift and Antonoff were also credited for Rodrigo’s song ‘1 step forward, 3 steps back’, which interpolates Swift’s 2017 song ‘New Years Day’. This was done in accordance with the Academy’s new rule that everyone who served as a credited songwriter on an album nominated in the category shares the nomination.

The Academy have since, however, changed this rule to reflect those that directly wrote songs for the album – as opposed to those whose work is interpolated or referenced.

This rescinded nomination from a Grammys category follows on from Marilyn Manson‘s quiet removal from Kanye West‘s Best Rap Song nomination. The change was made due to the nomination changing from ‘Jail Pt. 2’ – which features Manson on backing vocals and a verse from controversial rapper DaBaby – to ‘Jail’, which features Jay-Z.

Meanwhile, Drake previously criticised the Grammys last year after The Weeknd didn’t receive a single nomination for ‘After Hours’.

The rapper said at the time he thinks “we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards”.

He continued: “The other day I said The Weeknd was a lock for either album or song of the year along with countless other reasonable assumptions and it just never goes that way.”

Drake then tagged other artists overlooked for a nomination, including Lil Baby, Pop Smoke and Popcaan, adding, “too many missing names to even name.”

Watch Lizzo cover Erykah Badu’s ‘Tyrone’ with cheeky lyric changes referencing Drake and Chris Evans

Lizzo has covered an Erykah Badu classic during her set at Miami’s Art Basel over the weekend – while ad-libbing some new lyrics of her own.

Performing as part of an American Express concert series entitled AmEx Unstaged on December 5, the singer covered Badu’s track ‘Tyrone’ – which Badu herself originally released in 1997 on her live album ‘Live’.

Riffing on the song’s hook of “I think you’d better call Tyrone”, Lizzo added in a nod to actor Chris Evans. This was done in reference to her joking on TikTok earlier this year that she was pregnant with his child. She also expressed interest in co-starring alongside him in the forthcoming remake of The Bodyguard.

“Maybe I should call Chris Evans,” she sings, with the crowd cheering in response. “Maybe Captain America could put another bun up in my oven.”

View footage of the performance captured by writer Tim Chan below.

Lizzo followed by asking, “Maybe I should call Drake?” She turned to her guitarist, who nodded at this as the two exchanged a laugh. This was done in reference to a lyric from her Cardi B collaboration ‘Rumors’, which was released in August and features the line “No, I ain’t fuck Drake yet.”

Lizzo later retweeted the footage captured by Chan, writing “WHY AM I THIS WAYYYYYY”

Other songs that Lizzo has covered this year include Chaka Khan‘s ‘I’m Every Woman’ and ‘Respect’, as made famous by the late Aretha Franklin.

Bad Bunny beats Taylor Swift and Drake to be most-streamed artist on Spotify in 2021

Spotify has shared details of its most-streamed acts in the period January 1 to November 27, 2021, with Bad Bunny topping the list for the second year running.

The Puerto Rican artist’s songs were streamed a total of 9.1billion times compared with 8.3billion in 2020. He is followed by Taylor Swift, Drake, Justin Bieber and BTS in the top five most-streamed acts.

Elsewhere, Olivia Rodrigo had the most-streamed song (‘Drivers License‘, 1.1billion streams) and album (‘Sour‘) globally on the streaming platform. Her song ‘Good 4 U‘ landed as the UK’s top track of 2021.

Lil Nas X’s song ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)‘, The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber’s ‘Stay’, and Dua Lipa’s ‘Levitating’ also made the top five on Spotify’s global list. Lipa’s 2020 album ‘Future Nostalgia‘ was the second most-streamed album on Spotify followed by records from Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran and Doja Cat.

Despite Bad Bunny’s global popularity, he is less favoured in the UK. Drake took the UK top spot for the most-streamed artist.

In other news, Bad Bunny recently took home two gongs at the American Music Awards. He won Favourite Male Latin Artist and Favourite Latin Album (‘El Último Tour Del Mundo’) at the ceremony on November 21.

He also performed at the event and was joined by producer Tainy and singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas. The performance began with Tainy playing synths from within an arc of curved poles and Venegas’ face appearing on the head of a robot playing the piano. Bad Bunny was then revealed to be in a pod hung above his collaborators.

The reggaeton star wore a white helmet with a green light on its top and red light covering where his eyes were. Watch footage of Bad Bunny’s AMAs 2021 performance above.

Drake becomes first artist to have two albums spend 400 weeks each on the Billboard 200

Drake has become the first artist ever to have two albums spend 400 weeks each on the Billboard 200.

Chart Data relayed the news on Twitter earlier this week (November 17). It was reported that the rapper’s two albums, 2011’s ‘Take Care’ and 2013’s ‘Nothing Was The Same’, achieved the milestone, with the latter album cementing it this week.

‘Take Care’, on the other hand, just marked its 454th week on the charts. It sits just 18 weeks behind Kendrick Lamar’s 2012 album ‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City’, which still reigns as the longest-charting hip-hop album in history.

Earlier this year, Drake marked another Billboard record as the first artist ever to have his songs debut in the top three slot positions.

The songs comprised the ‘Scary Hours 2’ EP, which preceded the release of September’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’. The latter album quickly made Drake the only act in Billboard history alongside The Beatles to have dominated all spots in the top five in a week.

Today, it was revealed that Drake is set to perform at Kanye West’s upcoming benefit concert ‘Free Larry Hoover’. The two artists will headline the concert on December 9 at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

For now, Drake has briefly shifted away from the limelight after the Astroworld tragedy on November 5. The rapper is named alongside Travis Scott and Live Nation, among others, in a $2billion lawsuit that was recently filed against them.

Sources claim that, due to the incident, Drake decided to pull a collaborative track with French Montana that was set to feature in his latest album, ‘They Got Amnesia’, which arrived yesterday (November 19).

The concert marks progress after a reunion between the two feuding artists took place last week. In an Instagram post, Drake and Ye are seen posing alongside music executive and Ye’s friend J. Prince. Ye captioned the image with an emoji of a white dove.

Hoover’s son Larry Hoover Jr. spoke about the upcoming concert in an interview on the Murder Master Music Show published on YouTube on November 18.

Hoover Jr. had revealed that both artists would appear “together advocating for freeing Larry Hoover.”

“We’re going to get the word out to as many people as we can,” he continued. “We gotta let the powers that be know that we want Larry Hoover in our community. That’s gonna be a big way to do it. Plus we want to show people of other communities that we can come together in peace.”

Ye had originally sparked the reunion in a video message posted publicly by J. Prince. In the clip, Ye read a statement from his phone, inviting Drake to perform at the concert as a special guest.

“I believe this event will not only bring awareness to our cause but prove to people everywhere how much more we can accomplish when we lay our pride aside and come together,” he said.

Travis Scott, Drake, Live Nation and more facing $2billion lawsuit over Astroworld tragedy

A Texas-based attorney has filed a $2billion lawsuit against Travis Scott, Live Nation and others over the crowd surge tragedy at Astroworld.

Thomas J. Henry filed the lawsuit against a long list of defendants, which also includes Drake, Apple Music and NRG Stadium, on behalf of the 282 people who hired Henry for representation.

“The defendants stood to make an exorbitant amount of money off of this event, and they still chose to cut corners, cut costs, and put attendees at risk,” Henry said in a statement.

“My clients want to ensure the defendants are held responsible for their actions, and they want to send the message to all performers, event organizers, and promoters that what happened at Astroworld cannot happen again.”

Ten people died and hundreds more were injured by the “mass casualty” Astroworld event that happened while Scott was onstage at Houston’s NRG Park on November 5.

Since filing the suit, Henry has claimed that at least 120 more people have reached out to him for seeking representation. In a subsequent interview with Hollywood Life, Henry elaborated on some of the injuries and trauma his clients allegedly suffered, including heart attacks, brain injuries and broken bones.

“Those who were injured are still very traumatized because they had to step over dead bodies,” he said. “They didn’t have a choice because there was nowhere to move. These people were trapped… They couldn’t breathe. They couldn’t get out.”

Apple Music has been named as a defendant in the suit filed by Henry, which alleges that Apple’s obtaining of the festival’s online streaming rights “played a critical role in the crowd-control disaster”, according to Rolling Stone.

“Early reports from the investigation of the Astroworld catastrophe indicate that the premises were arranged in a fashion that best served Apple’s online streaming of the concert at the detriment to concertgoer safety,” the suit reportedly reads.

Apple Music has yet to publicly respond to the lawsuit. NME has reached out for comment.

Scott has said he will pay for the funeral costs of victims of the Astroworld incident, while his team have also released a statement asking families of Astroworld’s victims to get in touch via email. Representatives say Scott is “distraught by the situation and desperately wishes to share his condolences and provide aid” to those affected.

Live Nation said in a previous statement that it will “continue to support and assist local authorities in their ongoing investigation” and “address all legal matters at the appropriate time”. Live Nation and other promoter ScoreMore have also revealed plans to develop a health fund to cover the festival’s attendees’ medical fees and provide mental health counselling resources.

Drake also released a statement of his own in the wake of the tragedy, which read: “My heart is broken for the families and friends of those who lost their lives and for anyone who is suffering.

“I will continue to pray for all of them, and will be of service in any way I can, May God be with you all.”

The number of lawsuits against Scott, Live Nation and other defendants related to the incident continues to soar. Henry’s filing comes just a day after another substantial suit was filed by Houston attorney Tony Buzbee, who is seeking $750million on behalf of 125 victims.

The latest fatality related to the festival was nine-year-old Ezra Blount, who died in hospital from his injuries on November 14. Blount had been placed in a medically-induced coma, following critical injury to major internal organs, including his heart, brain, kidney and liver.

The CEO of ParaDocs, the medical company hired by Astroworld, has also spoken out on the crowd surge tragedy, saying that his staff faced an “impossible feat” of treating 11 people with cardiac arrests at the same time. He also said that he’ll have “nightmares about for the rest of [his] life.”

Drake pulls ‘Splash Brothers’ collab from French Montana’s new album

Drake and French Montana‘s new track ‘Splash Brothers’ will no longer be released as part of the latter’s forthcoming album, ‘They Got Amnesia’.

The collaboration was originally announced alongside the LP earlier this month but ahead of its release tomorrow (Friday 19), the track has been removed from the tracklist on streaming services. It’s been replaced by the French Montana solo track ‘Fraud’.

Sources have told TMZ the decision to pull the track came from Drake, who doesn’t think it’s appropriate to release music right now, after what happened at Astroworld. Apparently it will come at a later date on a deluxe version of ‘They Got Amnesia’.

Ten people died and hundreds more were injured during a crowd-crush at the Travis Scott curated festival earlier this month. Before the incident, Drake had appeared onstage with Travis Scott where the pair performed a handful of songs together.

“I’ve spent the past few days trying to wrap my mind around this devastating tragedy. I hate resorting to this platform to express an emotion as delicate as grief but this is where I find myself,” Drake wrote in a statement on Instagram following the tragedy.

Drake has also been named in documents filed on behalf of 125 Astroworld attendees looking to seek damages from Scott, Live Nation, Apple and Drake.

The new suit was announced by Houston-based lawyer Tony Buzbee on Instagram, where he promised that “every individual who attended that concert and who suffered injury will be fairly compensated.”

A snippet of ‘Splash Brothers’ leaked earlier this year which apparently featured Drake rapping the line “I fuck a rapper’s wife/ She ain’t even my type but I make the sacrifice“.

Fans assumed the lyric was a dig at Kim Kardashian and Kanye West and the reason for the track being pulled was because Drake and Kanye have recently ended their feud. However, the same TMZ sources have denied that this is the case.

“Fake Drake” claims rapper doesn’t mind him booking gigs as him

A man impersonating Drake, dubbed “Fake Drake”, has said that the rapper has indirectly given him his blessing.

In an interview with No Jumper, “Fake Drake”, also known as Izzy, spoke about his antics around town and how he has been able to book events while impersonating Drake. Promoters have paid him upwards of $5K to just show up at events, while also covering his travel and accommodation.

“People DM me, like, ‘Do you want to come to my event? We can’t pay Drake because he’s too expensive,” said Izzy. “I’ve been doing my thing, you know. That’s all I’m gonna say.”

He was asked if Drake is aware of his “Fake Drake” persona, to which he replied yes. According to Izzy, the host at some luxury accommodation he was staying at in Vegas was worried about causing the real Drake any offence. So he decided to contact the rapper directly, and was reportedly told that the impersonator didn’t bother him, so “let the guy get his bag”.

Footage of the ‘Certified Lover Boy’ lookalike began circulating on social media last month after Tory Lanez spotted him at a number of nightclubs in Miami. He was then seen in LA clubs appearing to rap along on stage to Drake songs.

HotNewHipHop originally reported that Izzy was sporting a heart-shaped cut in his hairline. The publication added that some security guards reportedly haven’t let him into their venues.

In other news, Kanye West and Drake have seemingly ended their feud. The pair posed together for a photo at the latter’s home, potentially signalling an end to their longstanding beef, which was been ongoing since at least 2009.

Kanye West and Drake finally reunite after seemingly ending their feud

Kanye West and Drake have posed together for a photo at the latter’s home, potentially signalling an end to the pair’s longstanding beef, which was been ongoing since at least 2009.

In a photo West – who recently legally changed his name to Ye – shared on Instagram, the two rappers can be seen posing for a photo alongside Ye’s friend J. Prince. Ye captioned the image with an emoji of a white dove.

Earlier this month, Ye extended an olive branch to Drake and invited him to appear at a forthcoming Los Angeles show on December 9 to raise awareness and advocate for the freedom of Larry Hoover, who is currently serving six life sentences for charges relating to gang activity. Hoover’s son urged Drake to accept Ye’s peace offering, saying Drake is “a leader and leaders make decisions that people follow”.

In the days following the event, Drake released a statement, saying, “My heart is broken for the families and friends of those who lost their lives and for anyone who is suffering.

“I will continue to pray for all of them, and will be of service in any way I can.”

Ye dedicated his first Sunday Service performance following the festival to those who lost their lives at the festival, the youngest of whom was just nine years old.

On Take Care, Drake Flickered Between Hurt And Hubris

By Dani Blum

Drake couldn’t control the biggest moment in his career. He was anxious and antsy when his sophomore album, Take Care, leaked online in November 2011, all the passion and purpose he’d channeled into making the record suddenly available to anyone willing to download it. He told GQ at the time that he named the collection after his intense devotion to the process of making it. “I knew I was going to go home and take longer than six months, I knew that I was literally going to take care of making this project and be attentive, be clear, be immersed in it,” he said. And then the album sprang online, days before the 25-year-old rapper planned to release it.

Take Care would become his defining work, the record that honed his sound and crystalized the emotional core of Drake’s music. It’s a dark, moody record, flickering between hurt and hubris, enchanted with its own inertia. Take Care shimmers and shivers. It demands your attention and intention. In the 10 years since the album’s release, its grip on the music industry has only gotten tighter. The bruised bravado of Take Care cast Drake as a character and caricature, an enthralling figure you couldn’t help but follow, enabling his ascent to the record-obliterating king of streaming. The record sharpened and shaped both his sound and the sonic stylings of those who would imitate him, and rippled through the culture, becoming inextricable from Drake’s image and influence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zzP29emgpg

Critic after critic wrote at the time about how Drake wobbled between pop and rap. But it’s clearer now how he catalyzed, or continued, a path that would obliterate genre entirely. Without Drake, we wouldn’t get the wave of melodic SoundCloud rappers, the beat switch-happy blare of pop artists trying on rap and vice versa, Billie Eilish slipping through hip-hop aesthetics and electropop blazes, Taylor Swift sluicing from country to Max Martin-powered pop to muted indie albums. Drake cracked open the conceit of clearly defined genre on Take Care. There are brassy rap bangers here — “Headlines,” “Make Me Proud,” “HYFR” —  but there’s also a stretch of slower songs in the album’s final third that showcases Drake’s singing. Nothing was mutually exclusive in Drake’s world: He could be bracing and brazen and broken, crooning and spitting, drenched in gold on the cover of his album but wallowing in his head, drinking to his accomplishments and wailing about how they would never be enough. “We threw a party, yeah we threw a party,” he brags on “Marvins Room,” sounding smug and self-satisfied, only to beg the woman on the other end of the phone seconds later: “Talk to me please, don't have much to believe in.”

The production on the album fueled these contradictions; the glimmering beats and smeared synths imbued a sense of tragedy that underpinned even the more buoyant tracks, like “We’ll Be Fine” and “Under Ground Kings.” Drake could sound exhausted by his nascent fame even as he was bragging about it, and the sludgy pulse of drums and lush, dark beats seemed like clues, foreshadowing the sadness he conveys. Noah “40” Shebib remained Drake’s primary producer and collaborator, and the sonic palette he honed on Drake’s earlier records and perfected on Take Care has radiated through music: the humid electro-beats of Lorde’s first album, the flecks of trap under Ariana Grande’s darker songs, the subtle shuffle of synths and drums in songs by SZA, Frank Ocean, and Travis Scott.

There’s so much ache slipped into these songs, braided in and bristling. Drake will never be a paradigm of subverting misogyny, but his songs did challenge ideas about masculinity. “I’m hearing all of the jokes, I know that they trying to push me / I know that showing emotion don't ever mean I'm a pussy,” he raps on “Lord Knows.” At his best, Drake unspools his stream of consciousness. He focuses on the intricacy of his intimacy. Only in the mercurial, mesmerizing soundscape of Take Care can a song like “Marvins Room” creep in and stun you — the tactile weight of Drake’s vulnerability, the sting in his voice. He sounds sick of himself. He stares straight at you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KCWqnldEag

And yet he also spends so much of the album conspicuously constructing his legacy, aligning himself with allies while staking out his place on a pantheon of rap titans: Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Birdman, André 3000. “Shot For Me” is ostensibly about Drake’s desire to haunt a woman, how desperate he is to prove that he’s shaped her — how she walks and talks, how she does her hair, “And that voice in your speaker,” he croons, “that’s me.” Maybe he suspected then the impact he would have on music as a whole. You can’t thumb through a New Music Friday playlist without hearing little snippets of Drake everywhere, the gliding vocals, the smeared beats, and the carefully calibrated sadness, soaked in enough charm to wring all out all the self-pity.

Drake knew what he could get away with. In his later music, he would test the limits more, sounding bored of his predictable success. “I got more slaps than the Beatles,” he bragged on a Meek Mill collab, before getting a tattoo of the band to commemorate breaking their chart records. (Drake beat his own record earlier this year for the most simultaneous top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.) He glided around a vacant, frosted mansion to promote “Tootsie Slide” last year, a track primed for TikTok; he fumbled at an acknowledgment of… something with “Girls Want Girls” from his latest album, Certified Lover Boy, calling himself a lesbian with no discernible sense of irony. He could also get petty, cruel, and malicious. He collaborated with Chris Brown after pronouncing his love for Rihanna over and over again, and he meandered his way through beef after beef with Meek Mill, Pusha T, Kanye West, and others. But he did all this because Take Care enabled that level of unimpeachable success; we’re stuck with Drake and his undeniable influence.

One of the best songs on Take Care isn’t even officially on the record. It’s a bonus track dropped from most streaming services, an iTunes exclusive left over from a time when that kind of deal could make sense. “Hate Sleeping Alone” is sumptuous and sensory, with Drake caroling confessions over a slinky spatter of beats. The song, and its exclusion from the most widely consumed version of the album, highlights just how good Drake was at his creative peak, how even a seemingly tossed-off track could sink into you. Drake knew he was crafting a record that could impale you, soundtrack your parties and weekends and hangovers, crash into you at the club, and comfort you in the haze of the cab ride home. “I live for this,” he sang on “Headlines,” humming over the surging beats, and that desperation radiated throughout the record. Take Care was a point when Drake needed music more than the industry needed him. His music was vivid because it was vital.

Drake issues statement on Astroworld festival tragedy: “My heart is broken”

Drake has released his first public statement about the events of Travis Scott‘s Astroworld festival in Houston, Texas last week, where a crowd crush during Scott’s headline set resulted in the deaths of eight people and hundreds of injuries.

The rapper appeared onstage alongside Scott during the latter’s set on Friday night (November 5), with the pair performing a handful of songs together. During the set, at Houston’s NRG Park, the audience began to compress towards the front of the stage, causing injuries, shortness of breath and, for some, cardiac arrest.

“I’ve spent the past few days trying to wrap my mind around this devastating tragedy. I hate resorting to this platform to express an emotion as delicate as grief but this is where I find myself,” Drake wrote in a statement on Instagram earlier today (November 9).

“My heart is broken for the families and friends of those who lost their lives and for anyone who is suffering. I will continue to pray for all of them, and will be of service in any way I can, May God be with you all.”

Yesterday, it was reported that Drake was named in at least one lawsuit filed by an attendee of the festival, alongside Scott and promoters Live Nation. The attendee’s attorney, Thomas J. Henry, claimed in a press release issued by his firm that the crowd surged when Drake made an unannounced appearance on stage, leading to chaos among concertgoers.

Scott and Drake continued to perform, the release alleged, “even as emergency vehicles arrived and responders attempted to rescue those in distress”.

Drake’s comments follow similar statements issued by Scott. In a brief, written message posted to Twitter shortly after the incident, Scott said he was “absolutely devastated” by the tragedy and that he was “committed to working together with the Houston community to heal and support the families in need”.

Scott followed up with a longer video shared to his Instagram, saying he could “never imagine the severity of the situation” and was working closely with authorities to “get to the bottom of this”.

Yesterday, Scott said he would pay funeral costs for the deceased and online therapy costs for those in need.

Travis Scott, Drake and Live Nation named in lawsuit filed over Astroworld festival tragedy

Travis Scott has been hit with three lawsuits – one naming Drake as a co-defendant – relating to the crowd crush at his festival Astroworld over the weekend, which resulted in eight deaths and hundreds of injuries.

The crush occurred during Scott’s headline performance on Friday night (November 5) at Houston’s NRG Park, when the audience began to compress towards the front of the stage, causing injuries, shortness of breath and, for some, cardiac arrest.

The eight people who died at Astroworld were between the ages of 14 and 27, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said at a press conference on Saturday.

Following the tragedy, Scott posted a statement on social media, saying his “prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld” and that the Houston police department “has my total support as they continue to look into the tragic loss of life”.

Scott later posted a video message on his Instagram Story, saying that he “wants to send out prayers to the ones that was lost” on the night.

“My fans really mean the world to me,” Scott said, “I always just really want to leave them with a positive experience. Anytime I can make out what’s going on, I stop the show and help them get the help they need.”

In a statement, Astroworld festival organisers said that they “are focused on supporting local officials however we can”.

Now, Billboard reports festival attendee Manuel Souza has filed a petition in Harris County District Court against Scott, his record company Cactus Jack, festival organisers Live Nation and ScoreMore, and several other individuals and companies.

The lawsuit reportedly accuses the defendants of negligence and gross negligence, claiming the incident was a result of “a motivation for profit at the expense of concertgoers’ health and safety”.

“Defendants failed to properly plan and conduct the concert in a safe manner,” alleged Steve Kherkher, Souza’s attorney. “Instead, they consciously ignored the extreme risks of harm to concertgoers, and, in some cases actively encouraged and fomented dangerous behaviors.”

The suit also reportedly references Scott’s history of hosting intense concerts, in which he would allegedly encourage fans to “rage”.

“This kind of behavior has long been encouraged by the festival’s founder and main performer,” Souza claimed. “His express encouragement of violence has previously resulted in serious violence at numerous past concerts.”

The lawsuit is seeking at least $1million in damages and a temporary restraining order preventing the destruction of any evidence.

Representatives for Scott, ScoreMore and Live Nation did not immediately return requests for comment to Billboard. NME has reached out to representatives for Scott and Live Nation for comment.

Another lawsuit was filed on Sunday (November 7) by Texas attorney Thomas J. Henry on behalf of an unnamed Astroworld attendee. Scott, Live Nation and NRG Stadium are listed as co-defendants, as is Drake, who made an appearance at the festival.

A press release by Henry’s law firm alleges that the crowd surged at Astroworld when Drake made an unannounced appearance on stage, leading to chaos as concertgoers were pushed into one another and the crowd pressed forward.

Scott and Drake continued to perform, it’s alleged, “even as emergency vehicles arrived and responders attempted to rescue those in distress”.

“There is no excuse for the events that unfolded at NRG stadium on Friday night,” Henry said in a statement.

“There is every indication that the performers, organisers, and venue were not only aware of the hectic crowd but also that injuries and potential deaths may have occurred. Still, they decided to put profits over their attendees and allowed the deadly show to go on,” Henry claimed.

Drake has yet to publicly comment on the events of Astroworld. NME has reached out to representatives for Drake for comment.

A third lawsuit has been filed by civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump on behalf of another Astroworld attendee, Noah Gutierrez, who is said to have helped affected members of the crowd in the VIP section.

“We are hearing horrific accounts of the terror and helplessness people experienced – the horror of a crushing crowd and the awful trauma of watching people die while trying unsuccessfully to save them,” Crump wrote in a statement.

“We will be pursuing justice for all our clients who were harmed in this tragic and preventable event.”

In his statement, Crump said he expects to be filing on behalf of other victims next week.

The track is from the Canadian rapper’s sixth studio album ‘Certified Lover Boy’, which was released in September.

The horror film-inspired video is directed by Pablo Rochat, with black and white visuals that include vintage cartoons, old archival clips and shots of the three rappers casually chilling while wielding huge knives.

Over the menacing Peter Lee Johnson and Metro Boomin production, Drizzy raps: “Yeah, I heard Papi outside/ And he got the double-R droppy outside/ Checked the weather and it’s gettin’ real oppy outside/ I’ma drop this shit and have these pussies droppin’ like some motherfuckin’ flies.”

You can watch the video for ‘Knife Talk’ below:

Upon its release, Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’ broke new Billboard records, matching a record set by The Beatles in 1964. The rapper is now the only act alongside The Beatles to have monopolised the entire Billboard Hot 100 Top Five in a week.

He also become the first artist ever to claim as many as nine of the Top 10 positions in a single frame. Justin Bieber and The Kid LAROI‘s ‘Stay’ were the only songs in the Billboard singles chart that weren’t by Drake at the time.

Last month, a writer on 00s teen show Degrassi: The Next Generation revealed that Drake threatened legal action against the show, in which he co-starred, over a wheelchair storyline.

In a recent oral history of the show to mark its 20th anniversary, writer James Hurst explained that Drake – who appeared as Jimmy Brooks in the Canadian drama from 2001 over seven seasons – pursued legal action after his character wound up in a wheelchair.

Meanwhile, a man impersonating Drake has been performing the rapper’s songs in LA clubs. Footage of “Fake Drake” began circulating on social media last month after Tory Lanez spotted him at a number of nightclubs in Miami.

Infamous Drake impersonator seen performing his songs in LA clubs

A man impersonating Drake has been spotted performing the rapper’s songs in LA clubs.

Footage of the ‘Certified Lover Boy’ lookalike – dubbed “Fake Drake” – began circulating on social media last month after Tory Lanez spotted him at a number of nightclubs in Miami.

Now, the lookalike has been seen in LA clubs – this time even appearing to rap along on stage to Drake songs including ‘Way 2 Sexy‘.

According to HotNewHipHop, the man even sports Drake’s heart-shaped cut in his hairline. The publication added that some security guards reportedly haven’t let him their venues.

Over the weekend “Fake Drake” was given the opportunity to jump on the mic to “perform” a few Drake hits.

Last week, he was filmed at a club on the day of real Drake’s birthday shouting on a microphone that he is from Toronto and yelling out the name of a Drake song, ‘God’s Plan’.

On his Instagram Stories last week (October 29) Drake posted photos of himself appearing to watch footage from the legendary ‘Up In Smoke Tour’ from 2000, which featured Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Dr Dre and more.

The rapper wrote alongside sharing photos of Eminem’s performances on the tour: “Man this guy is underappreciated,” tagging Marshall Mathers’ official account.

YoungBoy Never Broke Again says a collaboration with Drake is “in the works”

Rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again has revealed that a collaboration with Drake is “in the works” during a recent interview.

The artist, who is currently awaiting trial for gun and drug charges, shared the news last week on streaming platform Stationhead.

“Me and Drake was really talkin’ ’bout ‘Top’, going ahead and getting the deal sealed with me and him linking up,” he said, referencing his 2020 album.

“That’s the whole collab we workin’ on as we speak,” he continued. “Yes, that is in the works.”

A post shared by DJ Akademiks (@akademiks)

The news comes fresh off the back of YoungBoy’s latest album, ‘Sincerely, Kentrell’, which arrived on September 24. The record has been contending for the Number One spot on the Billboard 200, up against Drake’s own recent release ‘Certified Lover Boy’.

YoungBoy was initially arrested in September, 2020, on drug and firearms charges. According to The New York Times, the rapper was one of 16 arrested after the police and FBI received an anonymous tip-off about people with guns at an abandoned site. They later announced they had seized 14 guns, $79,000 (£61,184) in cash and drugs from the location in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

As per the Rap-Up, he was apprehended in Los Angeles in March this year over an outstanding warrant on drug and weapons charges. He pleaded not guilty to possession of a firearm and possession of an unregistered firearm, and is currently awaiting trial in an LA jail.

Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’ arrived on September 3, with NME calling it a “boring, bloated disappointment” in a two-star review.

It went on to secure the Toronto rapper his fourth UK Number One album and break a US Billboard record, becoming the only act alongside The Beatles to monopolise the entire top five in a week.

Watch J. Cole rap over Drake’s ‘Pipe Down’ beat in ‘Heaven’s EP’ video

J. Cole has shared a music video for surprise new single ‘Heaven’s EP’ – watch it below.

The new track arrives barely four months after the rapper’s most recent album, ‘The Off-Season’, and is also remarkable for being the latest in a dizzying chain of samples.

  • READ MORE: J. Cole – ‘The Off-Season’ review: technical brilliance that’s not built for the mainstream

While the beat in ‘Heaven’s EP’ identifiably belongs to ‘Pipe Down’ from Drake’s latest album ‘Certified Lover Boy’, as Stereogum point out, ‘Pipe Down’ itself sampled Lil Wayne’s ‘Pussy Money Weed,’ which sampled OutKast’s ‘Jazzy Belle’, which sampled ‘Prelude’ by Lamont Dozier, ‘Cell Therapy’ by Goodie Mob, and ‘It’s Yours’ by T La Rock & Jazzy Jay, the latter of which sampled Uncle Louie’s ‘I Like Funky Music’.

The ‘Heaven’s EP’ video was directed by Simon Chasalow, and features Cole across a number of locations in Las Vegas.

It appears Cole is fully focused on music again now after leaving the Rwanda Patriots earlier this year (May 26), citing “family obligations” for his departure from the basketball side.

It was revealed that the rapper/professional baller had fulfilled his contractual obligation to the African Basketball League team after playing in three games. Cole finished his contract at the team with five points, three assists, and five rebounds.

In a two-star review of ‘Certified Lover Boy’, which features the newly J. Cole-sampled ‘Pipe Down’, NME wrote: “If Drake feels like the weight of the world is upon him, as he suggests on ‘Champagne Poetry’, ‘Certified Lover Boy’ is not going to go any way towards blasting away that burden. It offers nothing new to the rapper’s canon, merely going through the motions on his old formulas instead.

“If Drake really wants to enter a new golden age, he’s going to have to be a lot more creative – and tough with his editing – to make it happen. Right now, though, his spark is rapidly burning out.”

Benny The Butcher explains why he’s not on Drake or Kanye’s new album

Benny The Butcher has explained why he’s not on Drake’s new album ‘Certified Lover Boy’ or Kanye West’s ‘DONDA’

During a Twitch interview with Connected, Benny The Butcher was asked if the Drake collaboration he’s been teasing since 2019 was left off of ‘Certified Lover Boy’.

“Drake is Drake. He’s the biggest artist in the world, so ain’t no tellin’ where that song gon’ land,” Benny said. “We got the song, I played it for all the homies. It’s a vibe and he gotta place that where he sees fit to it.

“I feel like it definitely would have fit in and definitely would have mixed things up, but I also see why he didn’t put it on there,” he added.

He then went on to address the people asking why he wasn’t on ‘DONDA, even though fellow Griselda Records members Conway The Machine and Westside Gunn did feature on the track ‘Keep My Spirit Alive’.

Benny admits that he was at the house with West and “heard some beats but then I shot back to Atlanta. I had things I had to do.”

“I don’t think Ye wanted me on there,” he continued. “I don’t care about it but it’s cool. I got all types of rapper homeboys that’s friends, that’s dope, that’s legends. Everytime they’re dropping an album, I’m not asking why I’m not on that stuff.”

“He got what he was looking for and I think the song sounded perfect. It ain’t need me on there.”

At the start of the year, Benny The Butcher released his new album ‘The Plugs I Met 2’.

The nine-track project, which arrived four months after Benny was shot during an attempted robbery, featured guest verses from the likes of 2 Chainz, Fat Joe, French Montana, Jim Jones and late rapper Chinx.

Swizz Beatz says Kanye West was down to battle Drake in a ‘VERZUZ’ episode

VERZUZ co-creator Swizz Beatz revealed that Kanye West was interested in appearing on the series to battle Drake, but an episode never materialised due to the rappers’ ongoing feud.

  • READ MORE: Timbaland and Swizz Beatz on ‘VERZUZ’ battle series: “We want to celebrate the architects of good music”

Beatz was a guest on The Angie Martinez Show yesterday (September 11). Checking in via video call, the Bronx-native multi-hyphenate appeared alongside Timbaland, with whom he launched the VERZUZ series back in March of 2020.

“Kanye was willing to do the VERZUZ,” Beatz said, hinting that such a collaboration might have come together if their feud hadn’t been reignited in recent months.

He continued: “[Kayne] wanted to battle Drake, but I think [their] communication started getting in a zone, you know what I’m saying? But I left that up to them.

“That’s what I told Timb as well, I was like, ‘Yo, they have to bring that to the table.’ They would have to agree to do that. Kanye was ready, but I don’t know where that’s at now. I’m still leaving it on them.”

Take a look at the full interview below:

Elsewhere in the interview, Beatz addressed his own beef with Drake, which began in 2020 when he called the Toronto rapper a “pussy” over an unreleased collaboration with Busta Rhymes. Drake responded by firing shots at Beatz on the track ‘You Only Live Twice’, which appears on his newly released sixth album, ‘Certified Lover Boy’.

On the track, Drake raps: “Unthinkable when I think of the way these n****s been acting / I never did you nothing and you play like we family, huh? / Next thing, you wanna shoot me down, it can’t be love / Not sure where you was tryna send it, it can’t be up / That day you sounded like a bitch, you fancy, huh?”

Responding to the cut (which also features Lil Wayne and Rick Ross), Beatz said: “I said how I felt, he said how he felt, I guess we even. And he didn’t go too crazy in the record also, you know? He could have said many things, that man is a clever artist.”

As for Drake’s feud with West, the pair have been trading barbs since as early as 2009, with a recent surge in animosity starting when Drake took aim at west on the Trippie Redd track ‘Betrayal’ back in July. On it, he rapped: “All these fools I’m beefin’ that I barely know / Forty-five, forty-four (burned out), let it go / Ye ain’t changin’ shit for me, it’s set in stone.”

West appeared to respond by calling Drake out in a group text, writing: “I live for this. I’ve been fucked with by nerd ass jock n***as like you my whole life. You will never recover. I promise you.”

He later leaked Drake’s home address in an Instagram post, before quickly deleting it. Drake then responded by leaking an unreleased track of West’s which featured André 3000.

The original song serves as the opener to Drake’s long-awaited sixth studio album, ‘Certified Lover Boy’, which arrived last week after a series of delays. Fiasco took to Twitter upon the album’s release, declaring his love for the cut by writing: “Champagne Poetry is my #1 running it back to back…Goodnight…(if y’all find that beat floating give me a sign)”.

Sharing his version on Friday (September 10), Fiasco raps: “Just left album mode with me and my n**** [A] Trak / And Drake dropped this shit got me thinkin’ ’bout going back“.

He also references Kanye West‘s recent album release, ‘DONDA’, saying: “I listened to ‘Donda’ / I also listened to Kanye’s mama in real life / That means I’m real twice“.

Check it out below.

It’s one of many freestyles Fiasco has shared in recent years, dropping a tribute to MF DOOM after the legend’s death was announced back in January. Back in 2020, he also shared a freestyle over Beanie Sigel‘s 2001 track ‘Nothing Like It’ and reworked Eminem‘s ‘Stan’ to fire back at claims he doesn’t interact with his fans.

Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’ was given two stars in an NME review, who called the album “a boring, bloated disappointment”. However, the record still went on to score the Toronto rapper his fourth UK Number One album spot.

Earlier today, Drake scored his fourth UK Number One album with ‘Certified Lover Boy’. The 21-track album beat off tough competition from Iron Maiden’s ‘Senjutsu’, finishing only 1,200 chart units ahead of the metal band’s record.

‘Certified Lover Boy’ also beat Drake’s own Spotify record for single-day album streams. His 2018 album ‘Scorpion’ previously held the title for most single-day album streams on the platform with 132million streams.

However, ‘Certified Lover Boy’ was confirmed by Spotify to have broken that record on its first day of release. The album also broke the record for most single-day streams on Apple Music too, surpassing the previous record-holder in just 12 hours.

Iron Maiden lead Drake in battle for UK Number One album

Iron Maiden and Drake are going head-to-head for a UK Number One album this week, as they release highly-anticipated new records.

The metal icons released new album ‘Senjutsu’ on Friday (September 3), the same day that Drake dropped the highly-anticipated ‘Certified Lover Boy’.

According to the Official Charts’ midweek update, Maiden currently lead drake by 8,000 sales, with the metal band leading on physical sales and downloads, while ‘Certified Lover Boy’ has gained significantly more streams.

New NME cover star Little Simz currently sits at Number Three in the midweeks with the five-star ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’, with other new entries in the Top 10 include The Wildhearts at Number Four, while ABBA‘s recent reunion tour and album announcement has their Greatest Hits album ‘Gold’ back in the Top 10 at Number Six as things stand.

NME‘s reviews of Iron Maiden and Drake’s new albums had significantly differing opinions. While calling ‘Senjutsu’ “an imaginative instant classic” in a four-star review, ‘Certified Lover Boy’ was labelled “a boring, bloated disappointment.”

The review of Drake’s new album added: “If Drake feels like the weight of the world is upon him, as he suggests on ‘Champagne Poetry’, ‘Certified Lover Boy’ is not going to go any way towards blasting away that burden. It offers nothing new to the rapper’s canon, merely going through the motions on his old formulas instead.”

Meanwhile, Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson has opened up on his battle with COVID-19.

The Iron Maiden frontman contracted the coronavirus last month, despite having received both doses of the vaccine. He’d taken a test after feeling “a bit groggy” but believed he would’ve been in “serious trouble” had he not been inoculated.

Dickinson subsequently urged fans to “get vaccinated”, reasoning: “And if you do get sick, you won’t get that sick. It’ll just be like a mild case of the flu.”

Drake premieres collaborations with Playboi Carti, Baby Keem and Rema

Drake debuted three unreleased tracks over the weekend, following the release of his latest album ‘Certified Lover Boy’.

The Toronto rapper appeared as a guest DJ on SiriusXM’s Sound 42 radio show on Saturday (September 4) to celebrate the arrival of ‘Certified Lover Boy’. While the attention from the show was mostly directed to Drake leaking an unreleased collaboration between Kanye West and André 3000, he also premiered a handful of new collaborations.

As HipHop-N-More points out, one track was an unreleased collaboration with Playboi Carti and DJ Carnage titled ‘One Day’, while another was the song ‘Mention Me’ featuring Rema. Finally, Drake debuted a remix of ‘What’s Next’ featuring Baby Keem.

Listen to the tracks below:

‘What’s Next’ is lifted from Drake’s March EP ‘Scary Hours 2’. Speaking to The Rap Pack earlier this year, Keem said he was meant to feature on the original track, and wasn’t sure why his version wasn’t released.

“That’s just his process. I look at it like if we don’t work now, we work later. Especially with someone like Drake, that’s his process. I can’t hate on another man’s process. I do the same thing. I’m the coolest person, I can’t ever be emotional about somebody’s process. That’s their process, you have to respect it.”

NME gave ‘Certified Lover Boy’ a two-star review upon its release last Friday (September 3), writing that the album “offers nothing new to the rapper’s canon, merely going through the motions on his old formulas instead”.

Following its release, the rapper’s producer Noah “40” Shebib addressed the inclusion of an R Kelly sample on the track ‘TSU’. The song uses the same symphonic intro found on the video version of Kelly’s 1998 single ‘Half On A Baby’, meaning he is credited as a songwriter.

“On a song called tsu at the beginning is a sample of OG Ron c talking,” Shebib wrote on Instagram.

Drake’s producer Noah “40” Shebib addresses R. Kelly credit on new track ‘TSU’

Drake‘s producer Noah “40” Shebib has issued a statement about R. Kelly‘s inclusion on the Toronto rapper’s new album, ‘Certified Lover Boy’.

  • READ MORE: Drake – ‘Certified Lover Boy’ review: a boring, bloated disappointment

On Friday (September 3), Drizzy released his sixth studio album, which features guest spots from the likes of JAY-Z, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Yebba, Travis Scott and more.

The album also includes a host of samples that credit artists ranging from Three 6 Mafia and The Notorious B.I.G. to Montell Jordan and The Brothers Of Soul. There’s also a controversial sample of R. Kelly‘s ‘Half On A Baby’.

According to WhoSampled, Drake’s ‘TSU’ uses the same symphonic intro found on the video version of Kelly’s 1998 single. Due to the sample, Kelly is also a credited songwriter on the track which has caused backlash as the singer is currently being on trial for allegations of racketeering, sex trafficking and child pornography.

The track’s producers (Harley Arsenault, Noel Cadastre, OC Ron G) are also credited, as is Christopher Cross, Timbaland and Justin Timberlake; NSYNC’s version of Cross’ ‘Sailing’ and Timberlake’s ‘Until The End Of Time’ is sampled on the track.

The R. Kelly sample occurs at the 20-second mark below:

Now, in an Instagram post replying to a news story about the sample, producer 40 has responded to the controversy and explained why the sample was used.

“On a song called tsu at the beginning is a sample of OG Ron c talking,” he began his response.

And I’m not here to defend drakes lyrics, but I thought I would clear up that there is no actual r Kelly present and it’s a bit misleading to call him a co lyricist.

“It’s kinda wild cause I was just reading ‘Baby Girl’ by Kathy Iandoli and the recounts of some of that stuff is horrific and disgusting. Then I saw this post and just had to say something because to think we would stand beside that guy or write with him is just incredibly disgusting.”

Drake also credited John Lennon and Paul McCartney as co-writers on his new album’s opening track, ‘Champagne Poetry’, for an interpolation of their song ‘Michelle’.

The interpolation is a sped-up sample used on Masego’s 2017 track ‘Navajo’, which itself samples The Singers Unlimited’s 1972 cover of The Beatles’ 1965 song.

Meanwhile, Drake fans have been reacting to the rapper’s use of Right Said Fred‘s ‘I’m Too Sexy’ on one of the tracks featured on ‘Certified Lover Boy’.

The song is sampled on ‘Way 2 Sexy’, the album’s latest single, which features Future and Young Thug.

“I didn’t expect to wake up this morning to hear Drake sampling Right Said Fred,” Annie Mac tweeted about the rapper’s use of the ’90s British pop single.

Desus Nice of the late night chat show Desus & Mero tweeted: “nah right said fred gotta get money off this future and drake track.”

André 3000 issues statement after his Kanye West collaboration is leaked by Drake

André 3000 has shared his thoughts on ‘Life Of The Party’ – an unreleased collab track he made with Kanye West – being leaked by Drake earlier this weekend.

  • READ MORE: Divorce, Drake disses and problematic features: 10 talking points from Kanye West’s ‘DONDA’

Though West had previewed the track earlier this week in an interview with Germany’s Bild, the full version remains officially unreleased. Drake leaked it on SiriusXM yesterday morning (September 4), however, appearing on the station’s Sound 42 program as a guest DJ to celebrate the release of his new album, ‘Certified Lover Boy’.

The track, which was reportedly recorded for West’s recently released tenth album, ‘DONDA’, features a guest verse from OutKast‘s André 3000, as well as a soundbite from a video of DMX and his daughter on a slingshot ride.

During his verse, West appears to take shots at Drake, detailing a recently surfaced text exchange between himself, the Toronto rapper and fashion designer Virgil Abloh.

“I put Virgil and Drake on the same text / And it wasn’t about the matching Arc’teryx or Kid Cudi dress / Just told these grown men stop it with the funny shit / I might hire the whole team from ACG / So don’t text me like I’m Juanita JCV,” he raps on the track.

André 3000 has now responded to the leak, confirming that ‘Life Of The Party’ was indeed written and recorded for ‘DONDA’, but got pulled from its release due to West’s decision not to feature any explicit lyrics.

In a statement he issued through a representative (via Pitchfork), the rapper said: “A few weeks ago Kanye reached out about me being a part of the [‘DONDA’] album. I was inspired by his idea to make a musical tribute to his mom. It felt appropriate to me to support the [‘DONDA’] concept by referencing my own mother, who passed away in 2013. We both share that loss.

“I thought it was a beautiful choice to make a clean album but, unfortunately, I didn’t know that was the plan before I wrote and recorded my verse. It was clear to me that an edited ‘clean’ format of the verse would not work without having the raw, original also available. So, sadly, I had to be omitted from the original album release.”

He also spoke on Drake and West’s ongoing feud, noting what when he agreed to collaborate with the latter, the verse ripping on Drake was not a part of the track.

“We were hoping to make a more focused offering for [‘DONDA’] but I guess things happen like they are supposed to,” he continued. “It’s unfortunate that it was released in this way and two artists that I love are going back and forth.

“I wanted to be on ‘Certified Lover Boy’ too. I just want to work with people that inspire me. Hopefully I can work with Kendrick on his album. I’d love to work with Lil Baby, Tyler and Jay-Z. I respect them all.”

Following a lengthy series of delays, ‘DONDA’ – which West says Universal released without his approval – hit streaming services last Sunday (August 29). NME gave it a three-star review, saying “nobody needs all 27 of these tracks, but dig deep into its contents and you’ll find enough gems to make [West’s] 10th album worth your time”.

On Friday (September 3) – the day Drake released his sixth album, ‘Certified Lover Boy’ – West spammed Drake’s hometown of Toronto with billboards advertising ‘DONDA’.

Drake leaks unreleased Kanye West track featuring mind-blowing Andre 3000 verse

The beef between Kanye West and Drake doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon after the latter has leaked an unreleased Kanye record featuring Andre 3000.

Early this morning (September 4), in celebration of the release of his new album ‘Certified Lover Boy’, Drake appeared as a guest DJ on SiriusXM’s Sound 42 radio show. During his set, he played an unreleased song by West called ‘Life Of The Party’.

The track, which was reportedly recorded for West’s recently released 10th studio album, ‘DONDA’, and was previewed during an interview with Bild earlier this week, features a guest verse from OutKast‘s Andre 3000 as well as a soundbite from a video of DMX and his daughter on a slingshot ride.

Towards the end of his verse, he issues a warning to Drake while also mentioning his infamous MAGA hat: “Told Drake don’t play with me on GD/ And he sent that message to everybody/ So if I hit you with a ‘WYD’/ You better hit me with, ‘Yes sir, I’m writing everything you need’/ I told you I was gonna take the summer back/ So any of the cap, won’t take none of that/ Where my muthafuckin’ red hat?

Elsewhere on ‘Life Of The Party’, the ever elusive Andre 3000 delivers a mind-blowing performance that hears him ask West’s late mother, Ms. Donda West – who Kanye’s new album is named after – to share his messages of love to his own mother, Sharon Benjamin Hodo, who passed away in 2013.

Miss Donda, if you see my mama, tell her I’m lost/ You see, she’d always light a cigarette, we talk, I would cough/ Exaggeratin’ a little bit so she get the point/ Tryna get her to stop smokin’, I would leave and fire up a joint/ Till I quit, started back up again, 20 years later,” he raps.

Last month, Drake and Kanye West reignited their on-and-off feud – which itself dates back to 2009 – when Drake took shots at West and Pusha T on ‘Betrayal’, a new collaboration with Trippie Redd.

West appeared to respond by calling Drake out in a group text, writing: “I live for this. I’ve been fucked with by nerd ass jock n****s like you my whole life. You will never recover. I promise you.” West then later leaked the rapper’s home address in an Instagram post, before quickly deleting it.

Earlier this week, West spammed Drake‘s hometown of Toronto with huge billboards advertising his new album ‘DONDA’.

Last month, the pair reignited their on-and-off feud – which itself dates back to 2009 – when Drake took shots at West and Pusha T on ‘Betrayal’, a new collaboration with Trippie Redd.

West appeared to respond by calling Drake out in a group text, writing: “I live for this. I’ve been fucked with by nerd ass jock n****s like you my whole life. You will never recover. I promise you.” West then later leaked the rapper’s home address in an Instagram post, before quickly deleting it.

The latest development has seen West ramp up the promotion for his new album by flooding Downtown Toronto with ‘DONDA’ billboards. In the images seen below, West’s billboards both outnumber and tower over the billboards Drake purchased to promote his new album ‘Certified Lover Boy’, which arrived earlier today (September 3).

A major label artist buying up billboard space to promote their new album isn’t anything new, but in the case of Kanye West and Drake because of their ongoing ongoing feud, every move seems to carry a little more weight.

Days before the release ‘Certified Lover Boy’, Drake announced some of the guests on the album via a series of billboards put up in the cities of each artist.

The billboard in Atlanta announced “Slime, Pluto, Savage and Baby are on CLB”, referring to the city’s rappers Young Thug, Future, 21 Savage, and Lil Baby. An Instagram post by 21 Savage capturing the billboard in the wild reaffirmed his involvement.

Likewise, another billboard in Chicago teased Lil Durk, who appears on the single, ‘Laugh Now Cry Later’, which was released August 2020. Giveon and Ty Dolla $ign were referenced on the California billboard, while New York’s Times Square version told them “Hey New York, the GOAT is on CLB.” Standing for ‘Greatest Of All Time’, “GOAT” referred to JAY-Z.

Other recent developments in the pair’s feud include West taking offence at Drake asking whether he would ever make “secular” music again, Drake making a quip about West’s choice of release dates on his Future collab ‘Life Is Good’, and West demanding an apology from Drake last September.

Drake’s sixth album ‘Certified Lover Boy’ is here, featuring Jay-Z, Kid Cudi and more

After several delays and setbacks, Drake has finally released his highly anticipated sixth studio album ‘Certified Lover Boy’.

The Canadian superstar has spent this week teasing fans with details about ‘Certified Lover Boy’, including hints for the artists that feature on the album, on billboards around North America.

21 tracks long, ‘Certified Lover Boy’, out today (September 3), includes featured verses from Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, Lil Wayne, Travis Scott, Future, Yebba, Young Thug, Lil Baby, 21 Savage and more.

In addition, the album’s second track, ‘Papi’s Home’, includes background vocals from Nicki Minaj. ‘Way 2 Sexy’, alongside Future and Young Thug, includes a sample of Right Said Fred‘s 1991 mega-hit ‘I’m Too Sexy’.

‘TSU’ samples NSYNC‘s 1997 track ‘Sailing’, according to Genius. It also gives partial songwriting credit to R. Kelly, who is currently on trial for racketeering, sex trafficking and child pornography. Details of Kelly’s involvement in ‘TSU’ are unclear at present.

Listen to the album below.

In a bio for the album on Apple Music, Drake wrote that the album is about “a combination of toxic masculinity and acceptance of truth which is inevitably heartbreaking.” He also dedicated the album to the late Nadia Ntuli and Mercedes Morr.

Kid Cudi’s feature appears to signal an end to the feud he and Drake were embroiled in a few years ago. A fan on Twitter said that they were “happy” to see an end to their beef, to which Cudi retweeted and said “me too”.

Drake confirmed the album’s release last week, announcing it on ESPN show SportsCenter by ‘hacking’ into the program. ‘Certified Lover Boy’ was supposed to be released in January this year, but was postponed due to Drake’s recovery from knee surgery.

The album’s artwork, which was unveiled earlier this week, consists only of pregnant women emojis, designed by artist Damien Hirst. It has since garnered mixed reactions online, along with a parody version by Lil Nas X.

Last month, Drake revealed the latest instalment of his ‘Certified Lover Boy’ merch line made in collaboration with Nike.

Drake Will (Finally) Be Your Certified Lover Boy On September 3

After multiple delays, Drake confirmed on Monday (August 30) that he will finally be dropping his new studio album, Certified Lover Boy, this Friday. Get ready.

Last week, a cryptic video clip that teased the release date for the highly anticipated album was aired by SportsCenter on ESPN. The clip showed some sports highlights and then was interrupted by glitching footage and warped audio of someone holding a sign that read, “CLB September 3.”

In a response to the so-called interruption, SportsCenter tweeted: “We want to apologize for any interruptions viewers might have experienced during SportsCenter this morning. We had some technical difficulties that have since been resolved.”

Kanye West appears to hit out at Drake: “I’ve been fucked with by nerd ass jocks like you my whole life”

It appears Kanye West has responded to Drake’s diss on the latter’s Trippie Redd collab ‘Betrayal’, calling him out in a group text between eight people – one of whom being Pusha T.

The feud began on Friday (August 20) when Trippie dropped his fourth album, ‘Trip At Knight’, which featured the Drake collab as its third track. In a verse on it, Drake seems to take shots at West and Pusha T, rapping: “All these fools I’m beefin’ that I barely know / Forty-five, forty-four (burned out), let it go / Ye ain’t changin’ shit for me, it’s set in stone.”

In a post to his Instagram account, West shared a screenshot of a text he’d sent to an unspecified group chat, featuring a shot of the Joker (as portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix) alongside the caption: “I live for this. I’ve been fucked with by nerd ass jock n****s like you my whole life. You will never recover. I promise you.”

Though it wasn’t explicitly confirmed that West’s text was aimed at Drake, eagle-eyed fans noticed that one of the bubbles in the contact bar of West’s text began with ‘D’. Add to that the timing of it, and the fact he added Pusha T to the conversation before sending it, and his motives seem clear.

Consequence, one of West’s longtime collaborators – and former signee to his label, GOOD Music – responded to Drake’s diss in a Tweet, writing: “Fuck a betrayal. It’s the disrespect for me dawg. Wit Trippie Redd shotgun. Respect my team. It’s party time.”

The news comes amidst a drawn-out release campaign for West’s long-delayed tenth album, ‘DONDA’, which he’s supposedly set to drop next Friday (August 27) following a livestreamed listening event in Chicago.

Lizzo talks Drake lyric in ‘Rumors’: “We have a small relationship”

Lizzo has addressed a notable lyric from her new Cardi B-featuring single ‘Rumors‘.

  • READ MORE: ‘Rumors’, Lizzo’s new song with Cardi B, is a dizzying, multi-layered return

In one of verses of the song, which was released on Thursday (August 13), the pop star raps: “Last year, I thought I would losе it / Readin’ shit on the internеt / My smoothie cleanse and my diet / No, I ain’t fuck Drake yet (Ha).”

Lizzo has now explained why she chose to namecheck Drake in the song. She told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe: “I just thought it would be so funny to say. I have a small relationship with him. He’s very cool. I just feel like women, there’s so many times where girls’ names get dropped in songs because they’re fine.”

Meanwhile, Cardi B has defended her ‘Rumors’ collaborator after the singer discussed tearfully online trolls who spread negative comments about her following the release.

“People who have something mean to say about you, and for the most part it doesn’t hurt my feelings, I don’t care,” Lizzo recently said on Instagram Live. “I just think when I’m working this hard, my tolerance gets lower, my patience is lower. I’m more sensitive, and it gets to me.”

On Twitter Cardi retweeted the video and stood up for Lizzo, slamming her detractors in the process. “When you stand up for yourself they claim your [sic] problematic & sensitive. When you don’t they tear you apart until you crying like this,” wrote the rapper.

“Whether you skinny, big, plastic. Remember these are nerds looking at the popular table.”

In other news, Lizzo is joining acts including Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat and Christine And The Queens and for Global Citizen Live next month.

Nick Cave recalls eerie story involving Nick Drake and Velvet Underground’s Nico

Nick Cave has shared a story involving Nick Drake and the time he met Velvet Underground singer Nico.

  • ORDER NOW: The Beatles are on the cover of the September 2021 issue of Uncut

Writing on his frequently updated Red Hand Files website, the singer-songwriter was asked a pair of questions by two different fans which he proceeded to tie up into one answer.

“I’ve always felt some sort of relation between you and Nick Drake,” a fan called Raghav from India wrote. “If you haven’t heard of him he was an artist from England who wrote only about 60 songs about love, regret, happiness and some emotions I can’t really describe. He sadly suffered from depression and died from an overdose only 4 years into his career. I may be very wrong in thinking so but do you feel that you share more than your first name with Drake?”

A second fan, Pamela from Los Angeles, asked: “Have you ever met a hero that didn’t disappoint?”

In response, Cave said: “Whenever I have heard Nick Drake’s music over the years I have enjoyed it, but that’s not the reason for replying to your letter, Raghav. I want to tell you a story, a sort of Nick Drake story, and try to answer your question, Pamela, in the process.”

Cave then went on to recall a story that started on London’s Portobello Road sometime in the early ’80s, where he was approached by a man who wanted to take his photograph.

“He said that I looked ‘interesting’,” Cave wrote. “He gave me his address and told me to come to his flat the next day. This is before I had developed an acute dislike of having my photograph taken, and when I was dumb enough to think that going to a stranger’s flat to have my photo taken might be a good idea. Anyway, the next day I went to his place, somewhere in Ladbroke Grove.

“Inside the flat, the photographer told me he had to set up his camera and asked me to sit and wait on a little sofa in the middle of his rather dark living room. I remember that there was an unsettling atmosphere in the room, heavy and strange, but I sat down anyway.”

He continued: “After a while, I felt a presence behind me, as someone entered the room, walked slowly around the sofa, and then very carefully sat down beside me. It took me a moment to realise that this person, this woman, was the singer, Nico.

“Now, Pamela, at that time in my young life, Nico, who had sung with The Velvet Underground and made some classic solo albums herself, was, by any measure, a hero, and she was there beside me, sitting very still, and wearing green rubber, knee-high wellingtons.”

Cave explained that Nico didn’t say anything to begin with, but eventually turned “slowly toward” him and said “very deliberately, in her thick German accent” that she knew someone just like Cave.

“I said, ‘Oh yeah?’

“She said, ‘He was a singer and his name was Nick.’

“And I said, ‘Well, that’s strange, because I am a singer and my name is Nick.’

“And she said, very slowly, ‘I know.’

“Then she said nothing for a while and my mind rushed all over the place, and I’m thinking, ‘Fuck, I’m sitting next to Nico. Fuck, I’m sitting next to Nico.’

“Eventually she said, ‘He died.’

“And I said, ‘Oh, you mean Nick Drake?’

“And she said, ‘Killed by his own hand.’

“And I said, ‘Well, that’s where we diverge.’

“She turned to me and after the longest time said, ‘Really? That’s what you think.'”
Cave said that Nico then stood up and walked out the room “in slow motion” while he was left thinking, “What the fuck.” But Nico didn’t go very far.

“The photographer’s way of taking pictures was to have you look in a mirror, in this case, his bathroom mirror, and he would photograph your reflection,” Cave explained. “As I was arranging my face, there in the mirror, from the end of the hall behind me, Nico appeared, like an apparition, standing very still and looking into the mirror. The photographer took the photo and I said, ‘I want that one.'”

Cave said he can’t remember what happened to the photos and added that he’s not even sure if he ever saw them. But, thinking about the mirror photograph with Nico in present day, Cave said he “sure would love that photograph”.

Drake confirms ‘Certified Lover Boy’ is being mixed and “on the way”

Drake has given another update on his upcoming album ‘Certified Lover Boy’, saying it’s about to be mixed and “on the way”.

The rapper has been teasing the record for some time and was originally scheduled to release it in January 2021.

After postponing that release, it seems the record – which will be Drake’s sixth studio album – should be on the way soon. During an appearance on Sound 42’s Fri Yiy Friday radio show, the star gave hosts OVO Mark and OVO Noel an update. “You know, Uncle Drake is back home to mix the album so she’s got a bunch of new tracks coming her way,” he said, according to Hot New Hip-Hop.

Last month, Drake teased a possible release date for the record. In an interview with battle rap league URLTV, he refused to specifically confirm when it would arrive. However, when a guest mentioned the end of the summer, he replied: “Oh yeah, I’ll be there. My album will be out by then.”

The rapper has also changed his Instagram bio earlier this week (July 7), causing fans to speculate that the album could drop soon. His bio now reads: “Certified.”

Meanwhile, Drake is set to open a new live entertainment venue in his hometown of Toronto. He is partnering with Live Nation to open History, a 2500-seat venue that will open its doors later this year, with the goal of providing a “premier entertainment experience” for patrons.

“Some of my most memorable shows were playing smaller rooms like History,” Drake said. “I wanted to take those memories and what I learned to create an incredible experience for both the artists and the fans.”

The album, which was originally set for a January 2021 release date before being postponed after the Toronto rapper injured his knee, was said to be “in the pot and coming soon” back in March.

Then in June, during an interview with battle rap league URLTV at their NOMEXI event, Drake said the album would be out before the end of summer.

Pushed on a specific date for the release, he refused to confirm when the album would arrive, but when a guest mentioned the end of the summer, he said: “Oh yeah, I’ll be there. My album will be out by then.”

Now, the rapper, who was recently honoured with the prestigious award for Artist Of The Decade at this year’s Billboard Music Awards, may have dropped a new clue about the album’s release with a change to one of his social media account bios on Tuesday (July 6).

Drake switched up his Instagram bio to “Certified”, which has led some fans to speculate that the change signals the imminent release of ‘Certified Lover Boy’. He also changed his profile picture to his son Adonis holding one of his Billboard Music Award trophies.

“@Drake messed with his @instagram bio notifying us certified lover boy incoming…” one Twitter user wrote, while another said: “It took drake a year and half to complete the ‘certified’ part… I don’t even wanna know how long “lover boy” finna take ..”

Last week, Brent Faiyaz released a new single titled ‘Wasting Time’, which features a verse by Drake and production by The Neptunes, aka Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo.

Faiyaz is currently working on his second album ‘Make It Out Alive’, following 2020’s ‘Fuck The World’. Within the past few months, he’s unveiled a collaborative single with Tyler, The Creator, and a Jorja Smith-featured single under Sonder, his project with producers Atu and Dapat.

Faiyaz recently told NME that he’s approaching his new album with a vastly different mindset compared to past works. “Around the time I was working on ‘Fuck The World’, I was travelling everywhere, just wiling out, living out of a suitcase,” he said.

“The entire process of working on that record, I was on bullshit. But now, I’m a homeowner and shit. I got a dog and am trying to elevate. I’m working out, eating healthier, reading books. Making ‘Make it Out Alive’ is going to be a reflection of all of that.”

Drake says ‘Certified Lover Boy’ is coming out this summer

After multiple delays, Drake has seemingly set a new rough release date for his forthcoming album ‘Certified Lover Boy’.

The album, which was originally set for a January 2021 release date before being postponed after Drake injured his knee, was said to be “in the pot and coming soon” back in March.

Now, in an interview with battle rap league URLTV at their NOMEXI event, Drake said that the album would be out before the end of summer.

Pushed on a specific date for the release, Drake refused to confirm when the album would arrive, but when a guest mentioned the end of the summer, he said: “Oh yeah, I’ll be there. My album will be out by then.”

See the clip below.

Drake’s most recent solo music came in the form of a new EP called ‘Scary Hours 2’, which dropped in March. In a three-star review of the EP, NME’s Luke Morgan Britton said: “Drake sounds less like an artist with something to prove and more like a title defender who might finally be willing to challenge himself again.

“He’s described the release as simply a ‘warm up ting’ to his ‘next masterpiece’, and it certainly does enough to build hype for the main event.”

Elsewhere, the star collaborated with Nicky Minaj and Lil Wayne on new track ‘Seeing Green’, and also shared plans to open a live entertainment venue in his hometown of Toronto.

According to Live Nation Canada, the 2500-seat venue, called History, will open its doors later this year with the goal of providing a “premier entertainment experience” for patrons.

Drake’s cannabis brand splits from multi-million dollar partnership

Drake‘s More Life Growth brand has parted ways with Canadian cannabis producer Canopy Growth Corp.

Statements from March show that both parties agreed to terminate their sublicense agreement launched in 2019, with Canopy shouldering an approximate $10.3million CAD ($8.6million USD/ £6.08million) impairment on the investment.

Bloomberg reports that the partnership, in which Drake owned a 60 per stake and Canopy 40 per cent, has now collapsed.

“We have indeed divested from More Life and the facility in Scarborough which had been intended to be part of that agreement is now Canopy Growth’s R&D facility, where we will work on plant science and science development projects,” Jennifer White, director of communications at Canopy Growth, said in an emailed statement to BNN Bloomberg.

Additionally, Canopy “derecognised” almost $33.7million CAD in remaining minimum royalty obligations owing to More Life.

Cannabis was legalised in Canada in 2018.

Drake has spoken previously about his fondness for the drug, saying back in 2012 that he used weed to cope with the pressures of fame.

‘More Life’ is the title of the album Drake released in 2017. It included tracks like ‘Passionfruit’, ‘Get It Together’ and ‘KMT’.

Meanwhile, last month Drake reportedly rented out the 70,000-capacity SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California to celebrate his big win at the Billboard Music Awards.

The Toronto rapper was honoured with the prestigious award for Artist of the Decade at the 2021 ceremony, which took place at the Microsoft Theater in LA on May 23.

According to E! Drake and his entourage headed to the SoFi Stadium – which only opened back in September and is home to the NFL teams the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers – after first dining at The Nice Guy Restaurant in West Hollywood following the Billboard Music Awards.

Variety also reported that the rapper rented out the stadium for a private party to celebrate his win, with Drake and his guests dining on the edge of the field’s 50-yard line.

The Game names Eminem and Drake among his Top 10 rappers alive

The Game has named his Top 10 rappers alive, a list that includes the likes of Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, JAY-Z and Drake.

  • READ MORE: The Big Read – The Game: “Me and 50 Cent should have died in that beef”

On Friday (May 7), the ‘Hate It Or Love It’ rapper took to Twitter to share his list, making a point to exclude himself from it but adding he’ll “go bar for bar with anybody on the list”.

Best rapper lists have long sparked debate in the world of hip-hop, and even more so when it’s an MC sharing their own personal list; The Game’s has proved no different if the comments on his post are anything to go by.

The Compton rapper put JAY-Z and Nas in the top two spots, followed by Lil’ Wayne, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar. From six onwards the list gets interesting, with names like Snoop Dogg, Drake, J. Cole and OutKast‘s Andre 3000 all appearing.

The newest name on the list comes in at 10, with The Game opting to anoint Atlanta rapper Lil Baby as one of his “best rappers alive”.

You can see the list in full below:

Earlier this year, Justin Bieber got in on the action sharing his Top Five rappers of all time.

The singer, whose latest album ‘Justice’ arrived last week, shared his list while appearing on DJ Khaled‘s The First One podcast.

Bieber began by acknowledging the can of worms he was potentially opening, saying “You know, when you open this conversation there’s always room for, ‘Aw, he can’t believe this,’”.

“But… I would say, Lil Wayne, Biggie, Eminem, Kanye West and my favourite is Drizzy Drake.”

Last year, Eminem shared a list of his favourite rappers of all time, replying to a fan on Twitter.

YouTuber NoLifeShaq shared a tweet reading: “Who is the greatest rapper of all time,” with a video attached of himself DMing the same question to a host of rappers including Drake and Travis Scott.

In a surprise reply to the tweet, Eminem laid out his list, which includes 2Pac, JAY-Z, Kendrick Lamar and more.

“For me, in no particular order…” Eminem wrote. “Toss up between wayne, pac, royce, jay, redman, treach, g. rap, biggie & king crook….”

He then added more names, tweeting: “Plus redman, LL, nas, joyner, kendrick, cole, andre, rakim, kane…”

Meanwhile, The Game has said that he would be willing to take part in a VERZUZ battle – but only if he was pitted against 50 Cent.

The Kid LAROI shares piano-driven cover of Drake’s ‘Shot For Me’

Australian rapper The Kid LAROI has shared a piano-led cover of Drake‘s track ‘Shot For Me’, taken from his 2011 album ‘Take Care’.

Recorded for Spotify Singles, LAROI puts his own twist on the song by stripping away the percussive elements and laying on the vocal production. The cover is joined by an acoustic rendition of his single ‘Without You’, lifted from the deluxe version of his debut mixtape ‘F*ck Love’.

“I chose Drake because he’s my favourite artist. ‘Shot For Me’ is one of my favourite songs off of one of my favourite projects and that made it really easy for me to do,” LAROI said in a statement.

Tracks on the record featured guest appearances from YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Internet Money, Machine Gun Kelly and Laroi’s late mentor Juice WRLD, among others.

The album was given four stars from NME upon its release, writing that “Juice WRLD’s protégé is similarly adept at turning heartbreak into massive tunes”.

Since releasing the record, Laroi has gone on to release a collaborative cover with Juice WRLD of Kim Petras’ ‘Reminds Me’.
