Breakdancer Asia One trying to raise $80,000 to rescue Afghan hip-hop dancers from Taliban

Nancy Wu – a visionary breakdancer and activist better known as Asia One – has set out to help rescue a group of Afghan dancers hiding from the Taliban. Her relationship with them began in 2019, The Guardian reports, when a member of the group (labelled as Moshtagh, his actual name redacted for safety) reached out to Wu in hopes of strengthening their international presence. But when the Taliban launched an offensive on Afghanistan in 2021, Moshtagh’s group made the snap decision to flee the nation’s capital of Kabul. Wu told The Guardian that such a decision was “based on complete fear”, noting that Moshtagh and his cohort were driven by an “overwhelming sense of survival” because “they felt so threatened by the Taliban based on their western practices”. Advertisement She explained that Moshtagh pleaded for Wu to help them out: “He said, ‘I feel like you guys have an obligation to help us,’ and I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ And he said, ‘Well, you know, we’re all just hip-hop family.’ And … the more and more we spoke, the more and more I realised that much of what he was saying was true.” Wu – who runs… Read More →

Taylor Swift’s Red Found Its Power And Legacy In The Details

Welcome to New Retro Week, a celebration of the biggest artists, hits, and cultural moments that made 2012 a seminal year in pop. MTV News is looking back to see what lies ahead: These essays showcase how today’s blueprint was laid a decade ago. Step into our time machine. By Carson Mlnarik It doesn’t take an ex named Sean to feel catharsis from Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” or a friend named Kiki to get in your feelings with Drake. Contemporary pop music is rife with hyper-specific details as the world’s biggest stars transform the minutiae of their lives into relatable chart-topping hits. But this level of candidness wasn’t always the norm. Though musicians have long written from a place of authenticity, pop radio’s stickiest earworms never felt quite so diaristic as when a jilted artist wrote a lover’s scarf into one of her most beloved songs. That artist, of course, is Taylor Swift, whose sprawling and frenetic 2012 album Red not only introduced Top 40 radio to her storytelling candor but also taught the world a lesson about the bond listeners seek to forge with their music of choice. “We actually do NOT want our pop music to be… Read More →

Just imagine having a serious argument with broken English,” she added. “That was hilarious. It was really hard to keep a straight face.” Even so, The Wonder Girls co-star Wes… Read More →

Take Me Home Found One Direction Rewriting The Boy-Band Script

Welcome to New Retro Week, a celebration of the biggest artists, hits, and cultural moments that made 2012 a seminal year in pop. MTV News is looking back to see what lies ahead: These essays showcase how today’s blueprint was laid a decade ago. Step into our time machine. By Larisha Paul There was no blueprint for One Direction. Before their formation in 2010, the landscape of competing boy bands whose mere name evoked thousands of screaming fans was barren. Predecessors like Backstreet Boys and NSYNC were either past their peak or already broken up — and none of them had been unexpectedly thrown together on a singing competition show. During their stint on The X Factor (U.K.), Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne were tasked with performing covers week after week while learning how to perform in a group that shared the spotlight, rather than crafting individual sounds as solo artists like they had hoped when auditioning. All the while, they attracted an audience of millions in a matter of months. Simon Cowell, who orchestrated One Direction’s formation, signed the group to Syco Records and set them — or more accurately, a crew of… Read More →

An experimental vanguard of the genre, Rihanna was worlds away from the Bajan, honey-tressed sweetheart introduced to fans on her 2005 Caribbean-tinged debut album, Music of the Sun. R. Kelly seeks acquittal or new trial in racketeering and sex trafficking case

R. Kelly has filed a motion to be acquitted on – or at least be granted a new trial for – his September 2021 conviction for racketeering, sexual exploitation of a child and kidnapping. According to documents sighted by Rolling Stone, Kelly and his lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, allege that the R&B singer (real name Robert Sylvester Kelly) was denied his Sixth Amendment rights (which state that all criminal defendants are entitled to “a speedy and public trial” by “an impartial jury”). It’s claimed that Kelly was denied his right to effective assistance of counsel in examining potential jurors, and that his assigned counsel neglected to challenge unqualified jurors. It’s also alleged that some of the jurors were aware of prior accusations made against Kelly (specifically those pertaining to his alleged sexual assault of minors) and had viewed the 2019 docuseries Surviving R. Kelly, meaning the jury “was neither fair nor impartial”. According to Rolling Stone, the documents also claim that Kelly’s former counsel was biased, as it’s alleged that “one of his trial attorneys was simultaneously representing the defendant of a prosecutor’s star witness”, referred to as Jane. The court had reportedly confirmed that said attorney had a professional relationship… Read More →
