Arriving today (August 15), the haunting track marks a bold shift towards a heavier, more intense sound for the LA-based Ronboy (real name Julia Laws). It’s emotional in itself having him on this song.” Berninger added: “Ronboy has a way of blending tenderness and ferocity like no other artist I know. So happy she let me into this incredible song.” Ronboy is also the opening act on Berninger’s solo headline tour, and debuted ‘Disaster’ live on the recent North American leg. That’s Them In The Spotlight

“The place went nuts!” On a chilly Thursday night in February, Michael Stipe took the stage at the 40 Watt in Athens, Georgia. Peter Buck was already there playing guitar and Stipe just wanted to sing backup on “Pretty Persuasion” with arguably the best tribute band in the world right now, featuring such R.E.M. superfans as Oscar-nominated actor Michael Shannon, veteran indie guitarist Jason Narducy and members of The Mountain Goats, Wilco and Poi Dog Pondering. “I’m no dipshit,” says Shannon. “I know people would rather watch Michael Stipe than me, so I gave him the floor. He didn’t disappoint.” [embedded content] Mike Mills jumped up to sing along, and halfway through the Reckoning track, guitarist Dag Juhlin spotted Bill Berry at the side of the stage. He motioned manically for him to get up there and Berry happily obliged. It wasn’t a reunion necessarily, but it was certainly an event. “The 40 Watt exploded,” says Narducy. “We were all looking at each other in disbelief. Everybody got choked up.” Advertisement Word spread fast around Athens and the following night the crowd at the 40 Watt was electric with anticipation. “I heard all about the festivities from the night before… Read More →

Advertisement Among the many stories and insights, Visconti reveals that Prince was approached to play on Heathen. Here’s what happened… “There was talk of getting Prince on the record…” “Pete Townshend came to the studio to record his part for ‘Slow Burn’ at Philip Glass’s studio in New York,” Visconti tells us. “In fact, Philip played a little bit on the album as well, he added a bit of piano but not a lot; he’s not a Rachmaninoff sort of guy. Pete added some windmill chords. We had the track ‘5.15 The Angels Have Gone’. I don’t know if that was a homage to The Who, but I played guitar on that and also doubled my bass part. Talking Heads won’t “go out on tour again”, says David Byrne: “You can’t turn the clock back”

David Byrne has insisted that Talking Heads won’t be touring again, saying that they cannot recapture the magic of their younger days and also don’t wish to become a legacy act. READ MORE: David Byrne: “I have a little bit of hope. Not every day, but some days” Fans’ hopes of a reunion were raised when the band teased a huge announcement back in June. It ended up being the first ever music video for their iconic hit ‘Psycho Killer’, which starred Saoirse Ronan, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their first live performance. Advertisement The band haven’t performed together since 1984 and until they came together in 2023, they hadn’t had a full reunion in 20 years. Away from that, Byrne is gearing up to release his first new solo album in seven years, ‘Who Is The Sky’, which is due for release on September 5 via Matador Records. He sat down to discuss it in an interview with Rolling Stone, as well as the prospect of Talking Heads ever playing live again. Although a live reunion is off the cards, Byrne did say he would play some reworked Talking Heads songs in his live shows. .“I can mix and match and… Read More →

John Fogerty – Legacy: The Creedence Clearwater Revival Years

Back in June of this year, US president Donald Trump ordered a parade in Washington DC in honour of the 250th birthday of the US Army – and, it was strongly suspected in certain quarters, of the 79th birthday of himself. At one point during what turned out to be a somewhat sullen and half-arsed trudge-past, the speakers blared the unmistakable descending riff of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son”. This was either splendid mischief or atrocious ignorance on someone’s part. “Fortunate Son”, which first appeared on 1969’s Willy & The Poor Boys, was a none-too-subtle protest song decrying the ease with which the well-connected were able to help their heirs evade the Vietnam draft. But it also illustrated the extraordinary endurance of CCR’s catalogue. We are now further from the Tet Offensive than the Tet Offensive was from the Battle of the Somme, and “Fortunate Son” – and the other songs collected here – has barely aged at all. Advertisement Fogerty himself, of course, has: he turned 80 in May. You wouldn’t know it to hear him tearing through the hits one more time on Legacy. The decades since Fogerty first recorded these tracks have perhaps cost him some of… Read More →

Radiohead announce Hail To The Thief Live Recordings 2003-2009, out now

Radiohead have announced a new live album, Hail To The Thief Live Recordings 2003-2009, available digitally now. The album compiles live versions of 12 of the songs from the 2003 record – “Backdrifts” and “A Punchup At A Wedding” are not present – taken from performances in London, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires and Dublin. Advertisement The group have also released a live video of one of the performances, “There There”, from Buenos Aires. Watch it here. Seemingly an attempt to reimagine the record with more energy, this new version was inspired by Thom Yorke‘s work on the recent Hamlet/Hail To The Thief stage production. “In the process of thinking of how to build arrangements for the Shakespeare Hamlet/Hail To The Thief theatre production,” Yorke says, “I asked to hear some archive live recordings of the songs. I was shocked by the kind of energy behind the way we played. I barely recognised us, and it helped me find a way forward. We decided to get these live recordings mixed and released (it would have been insane to keep them for ourselves). It has all been a very cathartic process. We very much hope you enjoy them.” Advertisement The live album, which… Read More →

Introducing the new Uncut: David Bowie, a Bowie posterzine, a 15-track Sounds Of The New West CD, Ozzy Osbourne, Lemonheads, Joan Shelley and more

I guess there are probably worse jobs to return to after a fortnight’s holiday. I arrived back at my desk a few days ago to be greeted by a swathe of upcoming releases, which I’m still working through. Among the highlights have been new albums by Joan Shelley and Wednesday – you can read Ana Gavrilovska’s interview with Joan in this issue while you’ll find Wednesday on the latest volume in our beloved Sounds Of The New West compilation CDs which comes free with this issue of Uncut. As this seventh instalment amply proves, it’s a scene which continues to change and thrive – among my personal favourites on this comp, Wednesday, Case Oats and Friendship all provide fresh takes to the genre, often in ways no one could have predicted what Allan first launched the series back in 1998. Critically, we’re aware of how these compilations resonate with you; we hope that this new addition adheres to the high standards of its predecessors. The 7th Uncut New Music Playlist Of 2025

I’m not long back from holiday with a pretty substantial pile of upcoming releases to work through. This playlist includes some pickings from the first batch – as usual, a mix of old faces (including two from our recent Album Of The Month stars, Big Thief) and new discoveries. Chief among the latest finds are Greazy Alice, who I imagine you’ll read plenty about soon in Uncut… Not for this playlist, but there’s also a bunch of archival reissues coming from around the same period – early/mid 00s – including Cripple Crow, The Disintegration Loops and These Were The Earlies. At the risk of singing our own praises, these records were widely championed at Uncut at the time and it’s gratifying to discover how great they still sound. We were doing something right then – and I hope from the selection below it’s evident that we still are.
