NewJeans vs HYBE: a comprehensive timeline of events

The ongoing feud between South Korean entertainment giant HYBE, its subsidiary label ADOR and K-pop girl group NewJeans has emerged as one of the most high profile feuds we’ve witnessed in K-pop in recent memory. ADOR, which houses popular K-pop girl group NewJeans, is helmed by former SM Entertainment creative director Min Hee-jin and was once poised to become one of HYBE’s most lucrative labels. However, it is now at the centre of an alleged power struggle over the treatment and management of NewJeans and future creative projects under ADOR. Advertisement Founded in November 2021, Min Hee-jin launched the label after two years as HYBE’s Chief Brand Officer. What began as a battle over control over management and creative direction of ADOR and NewJeans has turned, over the course of the past year, into a heated tug-of-war between the entertainment giant and the band themselves over their artistic autonomy and worker’s rights. The futures of NewJeans have become increasingly unclear amid the feud. Although many blanks have yet to be filled in the overarching battle, below is a full timeline of events that have occurred since all parties have taken their dispute to the public arena. April 22, 2024 – HYBE… Read More →

Hiroshi Yoshimura – Flora

For those unfamiliar with the work of Hiroshi Yoshimura, the title of the final track – “Satie On The Grass” – gives some clues as to what we can expect on Flora. Satie is of course Erik Satie, the French composer and pianist who himself was a pioneer of “furniture music”, a style intended as a form of background music, as opposed to conscious listening. He was a significant influence on the formation of minimal music, which began to take shape in the ’60s, a couple of decades before the recording of Yoshimura’s landmark albums of his own take on furniture music, or as it’s now better known, environmental music. The Waterboys – Life, Death & Dennis Hopper

The concept album has a chequered history in rock’n’roll. As a musician of a certain vintage – inspired by punk, rooted in rock classicism – Mike Scott flinched when collaborator Simon Dine suggested to him that an album about Dennis Hopper should include an instrumental for each of the actor’s five wives. The memory of Rick Wakeman’s Six Wives Of Henry VIII flashed up, and it was not an inspiring thought. And yet. And yet. Life, Death & Dennis Hopper is a concept album. It is all about Dennis Hopper. It is inspired by Dennis Hopper. It explores the life and times of Dennis Hopper. It includes – look away now, prog fans – instrumental interludes for each of Dennis Hopper’s five wives. Yet it is, like all Waterboys records, a deeply personal thing. It is completely different from everything that Scott has ever done, yet entirely in keeping with it. It could be a page from his Jungleland fanzine. It… Read More →

Tracy Chapman refuses to stream music: “Artists get paid when you actually buy CD or vinyl”

Tracy Chapman has revealed she refuses to stream music, insisting that buying physical music is the only way for artists to get paid. The singer-songwriter has given an interview to the New York Times in which she discusses her outlook on the current state of the music industry. Advertisement Answering a question about how much new music she listens to, she responded: “I do listen to music still. I don’t listen to as much as I used to, and I’m maybe going to date myself now, or someone’s going to call me a Luddite, but I don’t stream music.” She explained: “I only buy music in physical form. Artists get paid when you actually buy a CD or the vinyl. That’s important to me.” [embedded content] “So to some extent, it limits what I listen to, because it’s a physical commitment of going out into the world and finding things, but I still do go out.” She went on to reflect on her rare public performance at the 2024 Grammys, which she said was “pretty awesome” for “all the young women in all their variety, doing their things.” Recommended When asked if she was referring to Chappell Roan, she replied:… Read More →

Bill Burr told Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder “I hated your band” at ‘SNL50’

Bill Burr has revealed that he told Pearl Jam‘s Eddie Vedder that he once hated his band at Saturday Night Live‘s recent 50th anniversary show. Burr was the latest guest on Late Night with Seth Meyers to promote his Broadway debut in a stage production of Glengarry Glen Ross, where he stars alongside Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk and Michael McKean. Advertisement Burr – whose recent music-related news involved the revelation that he might be half-brothers with Billy Corgan – told Meyers that, whenever he’s not needed on stage during each showtime, he retreats to his dressing room to practice AC/DC and Led Zeppelin songs on an electronic drum kit. Meyers, who was also present at SNL50, asked Burr if he “mended fences” with Vedder over a “one-sided issue” he had towards the grunge band. As a hair metal fan in his teens, the arrival of Pearl Jam was admittedly not welcomed by the comedian: “Pearl Jam, that was the band that made me realize my youth was over,” Burr told Meyers. Stand by for many marvellous digressions, sundry gardening tips and a glimpse into “Snocko Time”. Oh, and Bob Dylan? “That’s a bad question.” Michael Hurley was cutting back blackberry bushes in his front yard when inspiration struck. It’s hard, back-breaking work even for a young man, but even more taxing for an 80-year-old. Still, it’s absolutely necessary when you live deep in the Oregon wilderness. “It’s not something you can do quickly because they’re very prickly and incredibly aggressive,” he explains. “Their defences are good. Brown Horse – All The Right Weaknesses

A band’s early trajectory tends to follow a certain pattern. First comes the rough toil, birthing obscure songs that very few people are interested to hear, gigging in backroom bars and so on, hoping for some kind of validation. Or at least an audience. If you’re lucky, you’ll get signed. Then comes the first album, usually shortlisted from songs you’ve been fussing over for the past few years. And if you’re luckier still, there’ll be attendant live shows, an accelerated period of development and a swift return to the studio. This is exactly where Brown Horse are at. But they’d actually begun as a folk quartet some six years earlier, playing covers and originals in empty pubs, before regrouping (and swelling) into something more guitar-directed. Eventually picked up by the ever-discerning Loose label, the album was immediately followed by… Read More →
