‘Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii’ review: Japanese crime saga hits the high seas

In a world where game narratives have increasingly fallen under the influence of HBO’s somber prestige TV tone, it’s refreshing to play something that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Previous Yakuza games have scratched that itch, embracing a hallucinogenically zany brand of soap opera melodrama and slapstick weirdness. Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii is the latest entry – the title alone confirms a return to its irreverent formula. At the game’s opening, a shirtless Goro Majima washes up on a sunny island beach. Awoken by a young boy Noah, Majima learns he’s on Rich Island, off Honolulu, Hawaii AKA “The Big Pineapple” of last year’s Infinite Wealth. Advertisement Then some pirates turn up. And not modern, Captain Phillips-terrorising speedboat and AK-47 pirates, either, but Long John Silver-cosplaying, shiver-me-timbers buccaneers. It’s here you first meet Keith The Pirate, a recurring punching bag who gets battered everywhere he goes. Majima has gaming amnesia but the intricate Hannya on his back lets us know what he’s about and fans will remember playing as him in Yakuza 0 and Yakuza: Dead Souls. After a few hours exploring Rich Island, you dispose of Keith’s captain and make off with his ship and crew,… Read More →

The Delines – Mr Luck & Ms Doom

“Nothing good happens in a bar at night to a guy over fifty. It’s just a fact,” an old soak named RJ tells Al, the narrator of Willy Vlautin’s seventh novel, The Horse. Al, an ageing songwriter, hiding out in an abandoned mine in central Nevada, takes the advice to heart and resolves to quit the bar life and spend his time listening to old jazz records and Ennio Morricone soundtracks and writing brooding folk ballads on his harmonium, songs with titles like “Nancy & The Pensacola Pimp”. Vlautin has always worked on the fertile borderlands or fault lines between fiction and song, and insists most of his novels are songs that somewhere along the way got a little out of hand. In fact, the last Delines album was a largely instrumental soundtrack to Vlautin’s novel The Night Always Comes (which in turn is soon to be a movie)…. Read More →

Doug Sahm & The Sir Douglas Quintet – The Complete Mercury Recordings

When Jay Farrar was preparing Day Of The Doug, Son Volt’s 2023 tribute album to Doug Sahm, he turned to the Complete Mercury Recordings. The 5CD set covering Sahm’s work with the Sir Douglas Quintet from 1968-72 had a limited release in 2005, before sloping back into the vaults, along with Sahm’s reputation as an innovator and inspiration. Advertisement THE MARCH 2025 ISSUE OF UNCUT, STARRING WILCO, A FREE WILCO CD, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, PATTERSON HOOD, THE WHITE STRIPES AND MORE IS AVAILABLE TO ORDER NOW It’s not that Sahm is unknown. His work with the Tejano supergroup The Texas Tornados (along with SDQ’s organ player Augie Meyers, Flaco Jimenez and Freddy Fender) helped define and expand the canon of Texas music. Musicians know. Uncle Tupelo covered “Give Back The Key To My Heart”. The Coward Brothers sang “Be Real”. Margo Price duetted with Doug’s son Shawn Sahm – the keeper of the flame – on “I Wanna Be Your Mama Again”. The spade-work for Sahm’s later success was done in these recordings with the Sir Douglas Quintet, where he and Meyers chopped their influences into a Texas stew, even when Sahm was pretending to be an English gent, or inhaling… Read More →

‘The Brutalist’ director says Oscar-nominated film has made him “zero dollars”

Brady Corbet, director of The Brutalist has revealed in a new interview that he’s made “zero dollars” from the acclaimed film. The Brutalist – which arrived in cinemas last month – has been sweeping the awards circuit this year, most recently winning several awards including Best Director and Best Actor at the BAFTAs. Advertisement The architectural epic is also tipped as a major favourite to win Best Picture at the upcoming Oscars next month. Yet despite the film’s acclaim and success, it appears that the film hasn’t raked in any money for its filmmakers. Appearing on the latest episode of the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, Corbet claimed that The Brutalist – and his previous film 2018’s Vox Lux – have made him and his wife and creative partner Mona Fastvold “zero dollars”, adding that he’s recently “directed three advertisements in Portugal” that mark “the first time that I had made any money in years.” When asked by host Marc Maron if he was speaking figuratively, Corbet doubled down on his claims: “Actually, zero. We had to just sort of live off of a paycheck from three years ago.” Corbet went on to claim that the financial burden of making… Read More →

Social media reacts to UK legends being called “the mandem” on Drake Wireless 2025 line-up

Drake has received backlash online for seemingly calling UK rap legends “the mandem” on the line-up for this year’s Wireless Festival. This weekend saw the Canadian rap juggernaut announced as the sole headliner for Wireless 2025 – which will take place at London’s Finsbury Park this summer, running from July 11 to 13. He will be performing three different sets – each with a unique, curated group of guests – for the festival’s 20th anniversary celebration. Introducing the Deluxe, 148-page, Ultimate Music Guide to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

In his introduction to this latest Ultimate Music Guide, Graham Nash lets fly a rather surprising opinion. Advertisement “I’m not so sure that the story of CSNY could ever really be told,” he tells us. “There have been a couple of new books about us recently, but it feels like both of them are just lists of how we fucked up. I didn’t sense the incredible joy that we felt, being in love with each other and in each other’s music, creating this body of work that travelled around the world.” Like Neil Young and David Crosby, Nash has written an autobiography with what must at least partly have been the intention of telling that story – and it’s also a challenge that we hope we’ve risen to in this latest Deluxe Edition Ultimate Music Guide. Of course, like anyone would, we’ve enjoyed some of the spicier tales that have emerged from the archive interviews and encounters which we’ve included here to help account for the rise to pre-eminence of four exceptionally strong personalities. We’re only human. What we’ve really tried to zoom in on in this latest 148-page updated edition, though, is that exceptional and generational music. We’ve gone in-depth… Read More →
