Japanese Breakfast’s ‘Crying In H Mart’ film adaptation is put “on pause”

The feature film adaptation of Japanese Breakfast’s memoir Crying In H Mart has been put “on pause” for the foreseeable future. The singer – real name Michelle Zauner – had written the screenplay for the movie herself, based on her 2021 memoir, which itself was an expansion of an essay published in the New Yorker. The film was set to be directed by The White Lotus star Will Sharpe and was going to detail Zauner’s experience growing up as a Korean-American and reckoning with her identity following the loss of her mother. Now, though, Zauner has confirmed that progress is no longer being made on the film. Speaking to SSENSE, she said: “Well, it’s on pause. There were issues with the Hollywood strikes, and the director stepped away from the project.” Advertisement “I spent a year working on the screenplay, which was a tough but rewarding process. I still have faith it will get made someday, but it’s not happening anytime soon. Right now, I’m focusing on other creative projects, so the film will have to wait.” [embedded content] Zauner announced a casting call for the role of herself in May 2023, a year after saying: “Hopefully that will come… Read More →

Matthew Lillard reportedly returning for ‘Scream 7’

Scream 7 will reportedly see the return of Matthew Lillard – find out more below. Lillard famously portrayed Stu Macher in the original 1996 Scream to kick off the beloved franchise. In that film, Macher and franchise protagonist Sidney Prescott’s boyfriend Billy Loomis were revealed to be the Ghostface killers, with Sidney killing both characters at the end of the movie. However, Deadline has reported that Lillard will be returning for the franchise’s seventh entry, Scream 7. It comes shortly after Lillard posted a cryptic video on Instagram, in which he writes down one of Stu’s famous quotes: “My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me!” Deadline notes that plot details on Lillard’s return in Scream 7 are being kept under wraps. Scream 7 is currently scheduled to release in February 2026. Speaking to Vulture in 2022, Lillard shared that there was a version of Scream 3 that would have revealed his survival. He was originally due to return for Scream 3, though plans changed at the last minute. He said at… Read More →

She struggled with addiction and homelessness during the 1970s, returning in 1979 with Broken English, which re-established her as a potent musical force. Faithfull continued to record, enjoying successful creative partnerships with long-term producer Hal Willner as well as Jarvis Cocker, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Her later run of albums included career highlights like Easy Come, Easy Go (2008) and Give My Regards To London (2014). Her final album, 2021’s She Walks In Beauty, a collaboration with Warren Ellis, found her putting Romantic poetry to music.

Spider-Man voice actor worried new series would be “annoying and woke”

The star of the new Marvel animation Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-man has spoken about the show, saying in an interview he was worried it would be “annoying and woke”. Hudson Thames, who voices Peter Parker/Spider-man in the show, spoke to Collider about appearing in the Disney+ series, which debuted January 29. “I thought it was awesome. I mean, my biggest fear was that it was gonna be annoying and woke, and it wasn’t” Thames said. He continued: “I was like, ‘Yes, this is great, it’s so well written,’ like it feels real. I’m the oldest of five boys, so I feel like I kind of know what’s happening in their lives and in high school, and it felt like it was doing that justice”. Thames has faced some criticism for the comments, particularly the negative use of the term “woke”. In a Reddit AMA, the series’ show-runner Jeff Trammell addressed the interview. “I love Hudson and didn’t focus too much on what he said” he wrote when asked about the quote. “I believe he simply misspoke, and I know that’s been weighing on him”. Dennis Bovell – Sufferer Sounds

A multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, sound system selector, chart hitmaker, architect of lovers rock, and an in-demand producer for everyone from dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson to post-punk groups like The Pop Group and The Slits – Bovell did it all, and has the box of dusty dubplates to prove it. Despite that silver he picked up in the Queen’s 2021 Birthday Honours, you could convincingly argue that Bovell hasn’t received the full recognition he deserves. Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy – The Purple Bird

Friendship. Concord. Openness and generosity. If folk is an innately community-minded music, then these are surely its cornerstones, not only practically but idealistically, too. They’re certainly qualities that have shaped Will Oldham’s career of 30-odd years. Though the title of his debut album may have conjured an enigmatic loner squaring up to life’s bleak truth, possibly from a backwoods shack in Kentucky, There Is No One What Will Take Care Of You was recorded with Slint’s Brian McMahan and Britt Walford, among others and released under the name Palace Brothers. In the four years following, Oldham teamed up with countless different musicians, using variations on the “Palace” theme. Despite a self-confessed tendency toward isolation, he’d started as he meant to go on. None of which precludes existential… Read More →

Introducing the new Uncut: Wilco, Jefferson Airplane, Patterson Hood, White Stripes and more

CLICK HERE TO ORDER A COPY Advertisement The relationship between Uncut and Wilco stretches back to our very first issue in 1997. There, in the reviews pages alongside album releases from The Jam, Mark Eitzel, Prefab Sprout, Paul McCartney, Laura Nyro, Supergrass and Melvin Van Peebles, Uncut contributor Tom Cox caught Wilco live at Wolverhampton’s Wulfrun Hall as they toured in support of Being There. “Suddenly, the whole thing explodes into clanging feedback and it’s as though the conflicting energies of punk and country have been tossed into a giant nuclear reactor,” Tom wrote. Since then, of course, Wilco have become an institution here at Uncut – a band who have continued to surprise and delight us in equal measure during an unbroken run of remarkable records and stunning live shows. While Wilco have always striven to be forward-looking, these past few years have seen them reach several notable milestones – not least the 20th anniversaries of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in 2022 and now A Ghost Is Born. We couldn’t let such momentous occasions go unmarked, so as we honoured Yankee Hotel Foxtrot with a cover, we’re delighted to give its successor similar red-carpet treatment. Lady Gaga on ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ reception: “People just sometimes don’t like some things”

Lady Gaga has spoken about the poor critical reception to Joker: Folie à Deux, in which she played Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix‘s Joker. Following 2019’s hugely-successful Joker, its sequel faced mounting anticipation due in part to the first film’s positive, though controversial, reception, along with the addition of Gaga to the cast. The film’s release in October, however, was met with hugely negative reviews by critics along with a dismal performance at the box office. Tim Dillon, who appeared in the film as an Arkham Asylum security guard, revealed that he and his fellow cast members were already skeptical about the film’s final cut during production. Gaga, on the other hand, previously called director Todd Phillips’ decision to make the sequel a musical as “a very big swing” and also praised the film’s “audacity and complexity”. Advertisement Now, in a new interview with Elle, Gaga was asked about the film’s public reception. “People just sometimes don’t like some things,” she responded. “It’s that simple.” “I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it,” she continued. “And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.” Lady… Read More →
