DJ in Olympics opening ceremony files police reports over supposed ‘Last Supper’ scene death threats

The French DJ and activist Barbara Butch has gone to the police after receiving death threats for appearing in an Olympics opening ceremony tableau that was mistaken for a recreation of Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper.’ The scene featured a group of drag queens and other members of the LGBTQ+ community, including a transgender model, giving rise to backlash from the Catholic church and right-wing commentators. Butch appeared in the centre of the tableau, DJing in a silver headpiece and blue dress. In an Instagram post, Butch said she was designed to look like an “Olympian music goddess.” The ceremony’s artistic director Thomas Jolly told French outlet BFMTV over the weekend that the segment was not a reference to ‘The Last Summer’ and was instead a tribute to Greek mythology. A viral video of Vice President Kamala Harris showing off a haul of vinyl records has been given the meme treatment — and now you can get involved. Last year, Harris shared a clip on social media where she talked through her purchases from Home Rule Records in Washington, D.C. Among her recommendations was a Charlie Mingus record, who she said was “really one of the greatest jazz performers ever”, as well as Roy Ayers’ ‘Everybody Loves the Sunshine’, which Harris described as one of her “favourite albums of all time” and a “classic”. Finally, she showed off Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald’s “beautiful” collaborative 1959 album, ‘Porgy and Bess’. Strands is the latest word game from the New York Times and is rapidly building a player base to rival Wordle. The free-to-play daily game challenges players to find a series of words from a jumbled up grid of letters. As well as horizontal and vertical chains of letters, though, Strands allows players to link a letter with any of the nine other letters that surround it, giving players plenty to think about. Strands is currently available to play via the New York Times app, as well as on mobile and PC. Check it out here. There are a number of different themed words to be found per daily game, linked together by a cryptic clue. None of these words will overlap and they’ll fill the entire game board. Kraftwerk pay tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto with ‘Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence’ cover

Kraftwerk have paid tribute to the late Ryuichi Sakamoto with a cover of ‘Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence’. The German electronic pioneers performed the track at Fuji Rock Festival in the renowned composer’s home country of Japan. ‘Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence’ is taken from the 1983 war film of the same name, whose soundtrack was the first that Sakamoto created in his illustrious career. Indeed, his soundtrack has been credited as one of the key reasons the film went on to become a cult classic despite mixed reviews from critics. Sakamoto also starred in the film alongside David Bowie, which was based on the experiences of Sir Laurens van der Post, a prisoner of war in Java during World War II. Apple TV+ has announced its new docuseries, K-Pop Idols, which will feature singer Jessi, boyband CRAVITY and girl group Blackswan. On July 25, Apple TV+ announced its upcoming six-episode documentary series called K-pop Idols, which it said will “offers fans an unprecedented backstage pass to the world’s biggest musical phenomenon” in a press release. The docuseries will be a “behind-the-scenes look at the highly competitive reality of K-pop stardom”, following the lives of singer Jessi, boyband CRAVITY and girl group Blackswan. “The series follows the superstars through trials and triumphs as they break down cultural and musical barriers in K-pop with passion, creativity and determination while they chase their dreams,” Apple TV+ added. Metallica launch Cliff Burton exhibit in their online museum

Metallica have announced the launch of a new Cliff Burton exhibition via their digital museum – find out more below. READ MORE: Metallica live in Amsterdam: still the greatest heavy metal band around Titled Orion: A Tribute To Cliff Burton, the digital exhibit is one of four collections scheduled to honour the metal icons’ late bassist, who died in 1986. The Orion exhibition is available for viewing now via Metallica’s Black Box museum through the band’s official website. It is available as a Fifth Member fan club exclusive, though that’s free to sign up for. The digital exhibition includes a look at archival photographs, old video interviews, letters penned by the musician and more.
