Dizzee Rascal has been given a community order after being convicted of assaulting his ex-fiancé. The 37-year-old, whose real name is Dylan Mills, was found guilty at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court last month (March 7) for assaulting his former fiancé over a row about child contact and finances. He was found guilty of assaulting Cassandra Jones by pressing his forehead against hers and then pushing her to the ground at a house in Streathem, South London on June 8 last year. Mills was originally arrested on June 8, 2021 on suspicion of common assault and was later released on bail. He was charged on August 2. Metropolitan Police said at the time: “Officers attended and a woman reported minor injuries. She did not require hospital treatment.” On September 3, Mills appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court and denied the charges made against him. He was sentenced by district judge Polly Glledhill today at Croydon magistrates court (April 8) who told him she wanted him to work on his behaviour since he “lost his temper and used violence.” Mills was sentenced to a community order with a 24 week curfew and was told he must wear an electronic tag. Wet Leg Make Mischief With Concise, Clever Indie Rock

By Beau Hayhoe You’ve heard the song. Your mom has probably heard the song. Anyone you know who’s “extremely online” has definitely heard the song. If you haven’t heard the song? Get ready to meet Wet Leg. The song, of course, is the riotously fun, incredibly clever “Chaise Longue” from the band of the moment (seriously). With its knowing references to Mean Girls (“Would you like us to assign someone to butter your muffin?”), zippy guitar, and a seriously cool bass line, it’s no wonder many dubbed “Chaise Longue” the indie song of last summer. The fervor surrounding the group — formed in 2019 in the Isle of Wight by college friends, rhythm guitarist-lead singer Rhian Teasdale and backing vocalist-lead guitarist Hester Chambers — took off astonishingly quickly, traveling from hitmaker BBC Radio 6 Music to the ears of Iggy Pop himself, who called out the track’s sharp drumming. The rising tide has finally reached the shore, as that smash single is joined by a sonically varied roster of 11 additional songs on Wet Leg’s self-titled debut, out today (April 8) on Domino Records. With each day, the group’s most well-known track reaches an ever-expanding audience — not bad for… Read More →

Wet Leg – Wet Leg

The breakthrough British guitar band of last year, Wet Leg created an inescapable earworm with their debut single “Chaise Longue” and its surreal, sunny, self-directed video. After their former folk-tinged project fizzled out in 2019, Isle Of Wight duo Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers adopted a new name and sound with the intention of making music that was emphatically fun, “goofy and a little bit rude”. Signing to indie hit-maker label Domino, home of Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand, they struck a perfect mood-lifting chord for the end of Covid lockdown, selling out their riotous live shows and even making waves in America. But this debut album arrives in darker, more serious times. Their arch, playful, nursery-rhyme punk-pop escapism risks sounding very Last Year. ORDER NOW: Paul McCartney is on the cover in the latest issue of Uncut In fairness, the initial novelty buzz of the band’s early singles has not faded. “Chaise Longue” still sounds instantly, ridiculously catchy and even lightly experimental behind its propulsive new-wave garage-punk throb and hilariously deadpan lyric, a sprechgesang masterclass in saucy innuendo delivered with sexy-cool, arched-eyebrow nonchalance. Its lesser sequel “Wet Dream” is more conventionally indie-rock in sound and more overtly sexual in content,… Read More →

Daniel Rossen – You Belong There

You Belong There is Daniel Rossen’s first ever full-length solo album. But, as the saying goes, it’s taken him a lifetime to get here. For some 20 years, Rossen has been a member of Grizzly Bear, the orchestral Brooklyn troupe who smartened up the city after The Strokes’ rock’n’roll reign, pioneering a wave of literate, sonically sumptuous indie rock in their wake. Grizzly Bear released five studio albums, won acclaim from the likes of Radiohead – Johnny Greenwood declared them his favourite band – and spawned a side-project of sorts in the shape of Department Of Eagles, which Rossen actually formed while studying linguistics and psychology at New York University around the turn of the millennium. ORDER NOW: Paul McCartney is on the cover in the latest issue of Uncut Grizzly Bear’s intrinsic grasp of a certain strain of melodic rock classicism – that of Van Dyke Parks, Paul McCartney and Randy Newman – set them up for longevity. But there were also signs of creative tension, in particular between the band’s nominal leader Ed Droste – who began Grizzly Bear as a solo project in the early 2000s – and Rossen, who joined in 2005 and became the group’s second… Read More →

Kurt Cobain’s final days are being turned into an opera

Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s final days are being turned into an opera by the Royal Opera House in London. READ MORE: Nirvana’s first NME cover feature from 1991: “I’m not sure how our original fans will cope” The production, called Last Days, will be a production adapted from Gus Van Sant’s 2005 film of the same name. The film, which was centred on a young musician called Blake, was loosely based on Cobain’s last days. Cobain died by suicide in 1994 aged 27. A description from the Royal Opera House says that the opera “plunges into the torment that created a modern myth” and that “Blake” is “haunted by objects, visitors and memories distracting him from his true purpose – self-destruction”. The opera has been composed by Oliver Leith, the Royal Opera House’s composer-in-residence. Directed by Copson and Anna Morrissey, it is due to be staged this October at the venue’s Linbury Theatre (via The Guardian). It’s some of the first music I learned to play on the guitar. “I owe a lot of how I now make music to the sound of grunge from that… Read More →

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever tackle lockdown loneliness on new single ‘My Echo’

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever have shared a lively new single titled ‘My Echo’, contrasting a jaunty, solo-heavy sound with soul-baring lyrics about feeling trapped in isolation. READ MORE: Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever: “Lennon, McCartney, Harrison were in competition with each other. We’re not” Written during one of the extended lockdown periods that Melbourne experienced in 2020, the track tackles themes of claustrophobia, anxiety and the damaging effects of a reliance on technology. In a press release, singer/guitarist Fran Keaney said it’s “about being surrounded by phone screens, computer screens, TV screens, paranoia and loss of time and place”. ‘My Echo’ arrives alongside a video directed by longtime collaborator Nick Mckk. It’s a relatively simple clip, following the band as they jam out in a sprawling, open warehouse. Their surroundings are only visible when illuminated by thumping strobes, with the band – at some points clad in papier-mâché masks representing caricatures of themselves – performing in total darkness for the bulk of the clip. Advertisement Take a look at the video below: Expounding on the song’s creation, Keaney explained that the final version of ‘My Echo’ is “pretty faithful to the very first rough recording”. READ MORE: The 10 best moments from BRIT Awards history – The KLF The film was premiered last September at the Fantastic Fest in Texas, despite objections from The KLF’s publisher. Snippets of the London duo’s songs, including ‘3am Eternal’ and ‘What Time Is Love?’, are used in the documentary under the fair dealing defence – which allows for the use of copyrighted work without payment or permission if it’s being used for the purpose of criticism. We’re doing other things that we think are much more interesting.” Atkins moved forward nonetheless, making Who… Read More →

Lady Gaga’s Grammys Performance Was A Love Letter To Tony Bennett

For tonight’s (April 3) Grammy Awards, Gaga blasted down from Chromatica to give the audience a big band experience, performing tracks from Love for Sale, the jazz album she recorded with music legend, Tony Bennett.
