Mamamoo’s Solar Puts Her Best Face Forward

By Sarina Bhutani Speaking with Solar feels like catching up with an old friend. As she settles into an evening Zoom call, the last of her day’s packed schedule, the typically ultra-glam idol appears in her most intrinsic state. Her hair, dyed back to its natural dark, is pulled up into a tousled bun, and a simple white mask covers her bare face in accordance with her trendy white athleisure. The woman sitting in front of the camera looks different from the one we normally see on stage, but her confident yet humble disposition remains intact. Talking to Solar is easy, and to know her is to truly love her. As the leader of one of K-pop’s most spirited girl groups, Mamamoo, Solar has released three studio albums, 11 EPs, and 25 lead singles since her debut in 2014, alongside fellow members Moonbyul, Wheein, and Hwasa. However, ahead of her first solo EP, part of her still feels vastly unsure. “Even though it’s been eight years since my debut, it still always feels like I’m sort of a rookie,” she tells MTV News. “With every song I release, I actually always feel nervous.” The “completely unpredictable” success of her debut single,… Read More →

Katy Perry wins ‘Dark Horse’ copyright appeal case

Katy Perry has won a copyright infringement case against a rapper who claimed she stole his music to make her hit single ‘Dark Horse’. READ MORE: Katy Perry – ‘Smile’ review: pop icon sounds somewhat recharged, but lacks the fireworks of old On Thursday (March 10) a federal appeals court refused to reinstate the original $2.8million verdict against Perry. In 2014, when Marcus Gray, who performs as Flame, alleged that the pop singer had copied his track ‘Joyful Noise’, jurors sided with him. However, in 2020 a judge overturned the original verdict. Advertisement At the time, the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ copyright ruling was used as a precedent for overruling the initial verdict, noting that the notes Perry repeated during the song, were too simple to justify copyright protection. Now, the court is again refusing to reinstate the original verdict. “The portion of the ‘Joyful Noise’ ostinato that overlaps with the ‘Dark Horse’ ostinato consists of a manifestly conventional arrangement of musical building blocks,” the appeals court wrote of their 3-0 verdict. The court continued: “Allowing a copyright over this material would essentially amount to allowing an improper monopoly over two-note pitch sequences or even the minor scale itself, especially in light… Read More →

Noel Gallagher says rock music is too middle class to find another Oasis

They’ve all been turned into wine bars and flats.” Advertisement He continued: “There’s lots of singer songwriters, loads of middle class bands… wearing guitars as oppose to playing them. Bop Shop: Songs From Oliver Sim, Megan Thee Stallion And Dua Lipa, And More

The search for the ever-elusive “bop” is difficult. Playlists and streaming-service recommendations can only do so much. They often leave a lingering question: Are these songs really good, or are they just new? Enter Bop Shop, a hand-picked selection of songs from the MTV News team. This weekly collection doesn’t discriminate by genre and can include anything — it’s a snapshot of what’s on our minds and what sounds good. We’ll keep it fresh with the latest music, but expect a few oldies (but goodies) every once in a while, too. Get ready: The Bop Shop is now open for business. Oliver Sim: “Romance With a Memory” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPqUcVbAbzw When The xx first debuted in 2009, band members Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim, and Jamie Smith projected an image — or perhaps a mystique — of minimalism and solemnity. That’s since been willfully punctured on each subsequent xx release; Jamie’s 2015 LP In Colour, on which all members appear, also still brims with effervescent vigor. It’s worth keeping in mind their early gravitas, though, when experiencing the playful glee of Sim’s solo debut “Romance With a Memory,” which leaps around the room as soon as you push play. “The only thing I regret,” he… Read More →

Andy Bell – Flicker

The cover of Andy Bell’s second solo album features an obscured portrait of Bell shot for Ride’s 1990 debut, Nowhere. This old image of distorted youth reflects the themes of Flicker, a record that sees Bell explore ideas of nostalgia and memory while re-engaging with the optimism and playfulness of youth from the perspective of a man of 50. The songs similarly cross time zones: some were written as far back as the 1990s and all were initially recorded in 2016 by Oasis’s Gem Archer before Bell completed them in lockdown in 2021, when it was hard to do anything but reflect. ORDER NOW: Paul McCartney is on the cover in the latest issue of Uncut Bell has been coaxed into his late-blossoming solo career by the Sonic Cathedral label. It started with a 7” (“Plastic Bag”/“The Commune”) in 2019 that Bell immediately recognised as the first step in his long-delayed journey into the spotlight. The first, The View From Halfway Down, saw Bell test the waters before this more ambitious double album,… Read More →
