Chris Robinson Criticizes Crowd for Patriotic Chant at Florida Show

The Black Crowes’ frontman Chris Robinson recently confronted an audience at the MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre in Tampa, labeling their behavior as “fucking ignorant” after they initiated a patriotic chant during the band’s set. The incident occurred during the group’s ‘Southern Hospitality Tour’ as the band prepared to perform their 1990 hit, ‘She Talks To Angels’.

According to reports, the tension began when a visual appeared on the stage screens featuring the band’s Black Crow mascot dressed as Uncle Sam. In response, members of the crowd began chanting “USA,” prompting an immediate and sharp reaction from Robinson. Before starting the song, the singer addressed the audience directly, stating, “Thanks for the geography lesson. I don’t know what you have to be so proud of right now.”

The comments sparked a mixed reaction, with some concertgoers booing the frontman and others reportedly leaving the venue in protest. Unfazed by the backlash, Robinson doubled down on his stance, telling the crowd, “For those of you fucking booing us, some of us are not afraid. And we most assuredly are not fucking ignorant.”

The band has continued their tour, with subsequent dates scheduled in St. Augustine and Charlotte, North Carolina. These performances follow the release of their latest studio album, A Pound Of Feathers, which arrived earlier this spring.

While Robinson is not typically known for using his stage time to deliver overt political commentary, he has occasionally made his views known. In 2017, he famously expressed frustration regarding the political climate and the state of the music industry, noting his dissatisfaction with the presidency of Donald Trump and the involvement of other musicians in various projects.

The Black Crowes were recently considered for induction into the 2026 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, though they did not make the final list. The 2026 inductees include notable acts such as Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Sade, Luther Vandross, and Wu-Tang Clan.

Looking ahead, the band is set to perform at the 10th anniversary edition of Madrid’s Mad Cool festival later this summer, sharing the bill with artists including Pulp, Foo Fighters, Florence & The Machine, and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.
