It has been over a decade since his last contribution to the series, a period that saw him transition from a breakout SoundCloud star in Ottawa to a seasoned producer with a diverse discography. This latest Ryan Hemsworth FADER Mix serves as a bridge between his early experimental roots and his current creative direction.

The mix arrives alongside the announcement of his forthcoming album, Numbskull, scheduled for release on October 21 via Topshelf Records. The project signals a return to the guitar-driven sounds that initially shaped his musical identity, blending his signature breakbeat dance sensibilities with pop-punk influences, including a collaboration with Tegan and Sara titled “Never Learned.”

A Decade of Evolution

Reflecting on his journey, Hemsworth notes that the landscape of the internet and music consumption has shifted dramatically since his 2013 debut. While his early career was defined by a relentless pace of remixing and constant uploads, the intervening years—marked by parenthood and the global pandemic—allowed him to recalibrate. “I was feeling burned out by 2019 from non-stop shows,” he explains. “I used that time to slow down and recalibrate.”

This period of introspection led him back to the instruments that first inspired him. By stepping away from the pressures of the club circuit, he found the freedom to explore a more organic, guitar-heavy sound. “I realized it’s not that deep sometimes,” he says of his creative process. “I started going to stuff that was big for me in high school, even just listening to Notwist and bands that are able to occupy a few different worlds at the same time.”

The new mix is a testament to his eclectic taste, featuring a wide array of artists including Future, Travis Scott, Playboi Carti, and the 90s rock poets Life Without Buildings. Hemsworth describes the curation as an emotional journey, weaving together disparate genres into a cohesive narrative.
