Former US President Barack Obama has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late musician Glen Hansard while unveiling his highly anticipated summer 2026 playlist. The annual tradition, which highlights the former president’s eclectic musical tastes, took a somber turn this year as he acknowledged the tragic passing of the acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter.

Sharing the list on social media, Obama wrote: “It starts with a song Michelle and I love by Glen Hansard, a great musician who passed tragically this week.” He specifically highlighted the track ‘Song Of Good Hope’ from Hansard’s 2012 debut solo album, Rhythm And Repose, before adding, “Our hearts go out to his family.”

Hansard, widely recognized as the frontman of The Frames and one half of the duo The Swell Season, died on Wednesday, July 29, following a motorcycle accident in Lucan, near Dublin. He was 56.
