Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke was representative of a movement that is picking up traction extraordinarily quickly in his hometown. The 20-year-old star was seen as one of the leaders of modern Brooklyn drill and, while he will be remembered for much more than just that, his music will live on forever, reminding us of the potential that Poppy had. He was killed early this morning after four masked men broke into the Hollywood Hills house he was renting, marking yet another instance where the hip-hop community is forced to mourn one of their young up-and-comers. Each week, our staff mulls over all of the new releases to create the TIDAL-exclusive TIDAL Wave playlist and, especially for this edition, we're featuring a number of songs by the late Brooklyn star.

Dropping his new album Meet The Woo 2 just a few days ago, Pop Smoke debuted to much acclaim on the Billboard 200. We have included a handful of his project standouts, including "Sweetheart," "Mannequin" and more to the playlist this week. Rest in peace, Pop Smoke.

It was a good week in new music releases, which spanned across several genres with album drops from A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Justin Bieber, Tame Impala, $uicideboy$, and more all coming through with full-length bodies of work. With so much to divulge, fans were busy on their streaming service of choice hitting the replay button on their favorite offerings of the week and, today, a projection for who will score the highest-performing album from last week has been released.

Hits Daily Double rarely misses with this sort of information and, today, they’re reporting that Justin Bieber and his new album Changes will land on top of all other new releases in the upcoming sales race. Moving up to 320,000 equivalent album units (with the majority of which coming from merch bundles), Justin Bieber will comfortably debut at the top spot on the next chart, dethroning Roddy Ricch. The Compton product will probably find his way back there at some point in the near future, though.

Following up Biebs will be A Boogie wit da Hoodie, who continues to prove why he’s one of the most highly-touted artists out of the Bronx right now. Up to 130,000 equivalent album units will be streamed of his Artist 2.0 display, which gives him the strongest rap debut of the week. $uicideboy$ are set for 21,000 units while, on another side of the spectrum, Tame Impala has the third-highest start with approximately 90,000 units moved.

Which album were you rocking with the most this weekend?

Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker recently spoke with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 and explained how Travis Scott was a major inspiration for his new album The Slow Rush.

“It was awesome. He’s so enthused by ideas,” Parker said regarding Scott. “He doesn’t waste time kind of doubting himself or doubting things. Which is extremely valuable, because you need that burst of conviction. I tried to take on some of that conviction when I’m working, because doubt and all that kind of stuff is poisonous in creativity.”

Tame Impala is credited on Astroworld as the producer for “Skeletons.”

The Slow Rush is Tame Impala’s first album since Currents in 2015 and contains the singles “Lost in Yesterday,” “Posthumous Forgiveness,” “It Might Be Time,” and “Borderline.”

“It was over a long period of time and had a lot of sessions to it,” Parker continued. “At some points, there were 10, 20 people in the room. You could just be there and hang out and not do anything for like an hour. And then something perks your ears up, and you can be like, ‘Oh yeah yeah, plug me in, I’ve got an idea.’ We’d go for hours until three in the morning.”

Gorillas are teasing an upcoming collaboration with Tame Impala.

What will be another installment in their “Song Machine” project, the upcoming collab was teased by the band’s guitarist, Noodle, on Instagram through a post of Tame Impala’s Currents album cover blended with Gorillas’ artwork.

“Song Machine is a whole new way of doing what we do.” Gorillaz drummer Russel said, according to NME. “Gorillaz breaking the mould ‘cos the mould got old. World is moving faster than a supercharged particle, so we’ve gotta stay ready to drop. We don’t even know who’s stepping through the studio next. Song Machine feeds on the unknown, runs on pure chaos. So whatever the hell’s coming, we’re primed and ready to produce like there’s no tomorrow. Y’know, just in case…”

The first song from the “Song Machine” project dropped this week. “Momentary Bliss” features British rapper Slowthai and is one of the best tracks of the week.

Gorillas also recently released a documentary titled Reject False Icons. 

Tame Impala’s fourth studio album, and first album in five years, The Slow Rush, is scheduled to release on February 14th. So far three singles have been released including “Borderline,” “It Might Be Time” and “Posthumous Forgiveness.”
