Devonté Hynes, the multi-talented force behind Blood Orange, continues to expand his impressive filmography with his latest project: the original score for the upcoming A24 film, The Invite. Directed by and starring Olivia Wilde, the dramedy is set to arrive in select theaters on June 26, with a wider nationwide release scheduled for July 10.
The film features an ensemble cast including Seth Rogen, Penelope Cruz, and Edward Norton. The narrative centers on a high-strung hostess, played by Wilde, and her husband, portrayed by Rogen, whose dinner party with another couple (Norton and Cruz) descends into chaos as hidden tensions and uncomfortable truths surface. Hynes’s score, which includes the lead single “Contentious Environment,” utilizes tightly wound strings to mirror the escalating anxiety of the film’s central characters.
This project marks another significant milestone in Hynes’s career as a composer. He has previously crafted evocative soundtracks for acclaimed films and series, including Melina Matsoukas’ Queen and Slim, Luca Guadagnino’s We Are Who We Are, Rebecca Hall’s Passing, and Paul Schrader’s Master Gardener. Beyond his film work, Hynes has collaborated with prestigious institutions such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the LA Philharmonic, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
His most recent studio album, 2025’s Essex Honey, was widely celebrated, earning a spot among the best albums of the year.
