Ethel Cain apologises after ending Paris show after three songs: “I’ve been having a bit of a time lately”

Ethel Cain has apologised to fans after ending a show in Paris after just three songs, saying she has been “having a bit of a time lately”. The artist – real name Hayden Anhedönia – released her latest record ‘Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You’ in August, an album she has said will “close the chapter” of the ‘Ethel Cain’ character in her career. Advertisement She embarked on a sold-out UK and European tour to support the album earlier this month, and played the first of a pair of shows in Paris’ L’Olympia on Saturday (October 17). The show, however, was cut short during its fourth song ‘Nettles’, when Cain appeared to break down in tears before walking off the stage. The live crowd were informed that the show had been met with “technical issues” and “unforeseen circumstances”, and the concert did not resume. Buzzcocks and The Stranglers live in Leeds: punk veterans in fine fettle

“Are you ready to rock, Leeds?” yells Steve Diggle, somewhere in Buzzzcocks’ 45-minute sonic blitzkrieg. The silver-haired guitarist turned 70 this year, but his schoolboy grins and excitable demeanour have been unchanged for decades, and he retains the curious mannerism of breaking off mid-solo to point at (a possibly imaginary) someone in the crowd. Following lead singer/main songwriter Pete Shelley’s death in 2018, Diggle is now the sole remaining founder member of the Manchester punks whose stellar singles and albums lit up the charts in the late ’70s, influencing the likes of REM, The Smiths and Nirvana. Accordingly, he makes sure his guitar-playing is centre-stage: delivered at ear-tingling volume with wails of feedback. Advertisement “What Do I Get?” and “I Don’t Mind” survive with distinctly ragged glory, although a slower “Orgasm Addict” is barely recognisable without Shelley’s inimitable nasal whine. Diggle’s voice is closer to Francis Rossi’s than his late bandmate’s, but although “Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t Have?)” still sounds wonderful, these current Buzzcocks fare best when not judged against superior earlier versions. The jangling “Manchester Rain” is the best song Diggle’s penned in decades, and a hurtling, slightly overly-extended “Harmony In My Head” reminds everyone… Read More →

Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere – a sentimental take on Bruce’s own private Nebraska

“I’m just trynna find something real in all the noise,” mumbles Jeremy Allen White, all brooding, ursine intensity as Bruce Springsteen at the heart of Scott Cooper’s new biopic. “You find something real,” reassures Jeremy Strong as his manager Jon Landau, “I’ll deal with the noise.” There’s a similar ambition to Deliver Me From Nowhere. Though there are wilder, noisier, more barnstorming chapters in the Springsteen biography, writer-director Cooper asks us to dial down the volume and focus in on the Boss’s quietest, strangest, most revealing episode: the year of 1981-82, when he came off the road in the wake of his first Top 10 hit, rented a shagpile apartment in Colts Neck, New Jersey, and started, in the face of all commercial expectations, to channel eerie, echoplex folk songs about the meanness at the heart of the world. Advertisement It’s a bold gambit (faithfully based on Warren Zanes’ deep-dive book), that cuts to the quick of Springsteen’s career, and to the relationship it was founded on. Because, although there’s a perfunctory romance featuring the rather squandered Odessa Young as Faye, the bottle blonde spirit of the Stone Pony, it’s this oddball bromance, between bruised heartland hero and buttoned-up nerd,… Read More →

Frank Turner “didn’t set out to inflict pain” with split from wife: “I wasn’t looking, but I met my soulmate”

Frank Turner has responded to the break up from his wife last year, saying that he “didn’t set out to inflict pain.” Last September, Turner’s wife Jessica Guise revealed that their marriage was “over”, saying the musician’s “actions on his US tour” were the main reason for the split. Advertisement Guise, who married Turner in 2019, took to her official Instagram account to share a photo of her and Turner at the time. The caption of the post began with Guise explaining that she had been putting off writing the post as she “didn’t want any of it to be true, but we’ve agreed that saying something before Lost Evenings might save some difficult questions.” “Things have come to light about Frank’s actions on his US tour in June and since, which give me no choice but to accept that our marriage is over,” she wrote. “This has all been very sudden and unexpected, and it has caused huge pain, but before any of this was a decade of love and joy; a quarter of our lives spent facing the world as a team, as best friends. Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska ’82: Expanded Edition – the myth is real!

Nebraska occupies a pivotal place in Bruce Springsteen’s catalogue, but for some that has never been enough. Ever since the legend of Electric Nebraska – Nebraska’s band-recorded alter ego – emerged, fans have wanted to unpick the knotty relationship between Nebraska and Born In The USA and hear electrified E Street versions of this sombre acoustic album. As recently as June 2025, Springsteen was denying Electric Nebraska even existed – and nothing appeared on the recent, epic Tracks II set – but the mythical album is finally here, thanks to the deus ex machina of Deliver Me From Nowhere, a Bruce biopic that focuses on his angsty wrestling match between artistry and commerce (spoiler alert: he could have both). Why do fans yearn to hear Electric Nebraska when the original album is already so good? Is there a nagging feeling it might have been even better? That Bruce was wrong? Or is it simply a desire to hear great songs in different clothes, to ponder the alternative history? The release of the Nebraska ’82 boxset brings some resolution, although different listeners have the right to draw opposing conclusions. Patti Smith at the London Palladium: transcendent rock ritual with an awkward conclusion

“Jesus died for somebody’s sins… but NOT MINE!” It’s one of the most compelling opening lines in rock history, emblazoned here across numerous T-shirts worn by the crowd, and greeted when Patti Smith first intones it at the top of the show with an ecstatic roar from the Palladium stalls. As her trusty lieutenant Lenny Kaye emphasises in the current issue of Uncut, “it’s not a rejection of Christ or what he stands for, it’s an assertion of responsibility.” In other words, everything is there for the taking if only you have the courage to reach out and grab it. Advertisement It’s why, 50 years on, Horses is still such a potent experience, its poetic epiphanies crystallising the idea of rock’n’roll as personal salvation. Evidently, Patti Smith’s passion for this manifesto remains undimmed. Her silver hair turned iridescent in the spotlight, tonight she resembles a celestial visitor, here to tell us all that paradise is within our grasp. At the same time, she’s an impish, vivacious presence, keen to do the watusi and have some fun. In this day and age, it’s actually a treat to see a great rock band silhouetted on a black stage, lit by pure white… Read More →
