MPs and Jewish leaders “deeply concerned” about Bob Vylan’s Manchester show, call on venue to “cancel the performance”

MPs and Jewish leaders have called for Bob Vylan’s upcoming Manchester show to be cancelled. READ MORE: Bob Vylan: “We’ve been screaming about these topics at the top of our lungs for years. Why has it taken this long?” The Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester (JRC) has urged Manchester Academy to cancel the punk-rap duo’s November 5 show in a letter supported by 10 MPs. It follows Bob Vylan’s set at Glastonbury 2025 in June, which was broadcast live on the BBC and saw them lead the crowd in chants of “death, death to the IDF [Israel Defence Forces]”. Following the show, Avon and Somerset Police announced that they had launched a criminal investigation, while the duo had their US tour visas revoked ahead of planned October shows. They later called out BBC director-general Tim Davie after he called the corporation’s decision to broadcast the duo’s set live “a very significant mistake.” The band, who have denied allegations of antisemitism, were dropped from Manchester’s Radar festival in July but are planning to return to the city on their ‘We Won’t Go Quietly’ tour next month. In response, the JRC has shared a statement saying it’s “deeply concerned by Manchester Academy’s… Read More →

Primal Scream announce ‘XTRMNTR’ 25th anniversary gig in London

Primal Scream have announced a one-off show in London to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their album ‘XTRMNTR’. As announced on social media this afternoon (October 6), Bobby Gillespie and co. will play at the Roundhouse on December 8, with tickets set to go on sale at 10am on Friday (October 10). You will be able to find yours here. Advertisement Gillespie has said: “’XTRMNTR’ was a very prescient album. It’s more relevant today than when we first released it 25 years ago, as the world has become a much darker and uncertain place since then. It’s time to play those songs again.” ‘XTRMNTR’ marked a major departure for Primal Scream, as they embraced a harsher, more provocative sonic palette that drew from industrial, hard electronic and noise rock sounds. The Chemical Brothers and My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields were involved in the production, while former Stone Roses bassist Mani shared songwriting credits with the band for the first time. The record also saw the band grapple with dark political themes, taking aggressive stances on government ideologies and self-serving global power structures on tracks like ‘Swastika Eyes’, an assault on authoritarianism and the corrosive effect of corporate greed. Jimmy Page pays tribute to Yardbirds’ co-founder, Chris Dreja

Jimmy Page has paid tribute to Chris Dreja, the rhythm guitarist, bassist and co-founder of The Yardbirds, who has died aged 79. Born Christopher Walenty Dreja in 1945, he was raised in Kingston, Surrey – on the ‘Thames Delta’, as the home of the British blues scene became known. Advertisement Dreja began playing with guitarist Anthony “Top” Topham, a school friend of his brother, forming the Metropolitan Blues Quartet in 1963 with singer Keith Relf, bassist Paul Samwell-Smith and drummer Jim McCarty. Not long after, the band changed their name to the Yardbirds, Topham left to be replaced by Eric Clapton. Fans think Taylor Swift’s new ‘Life Of A Showgirl’ song ‘Actually Romantic’ is a Charli XCX diss track

Fans of Taylor Swift believe ‘Actually Romantic’ off her new album ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ is a diss track aimed at Charli XCX – see why below. READ MORE: Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour comes to an end: a look at its massive global impact Following the release of ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’, fans have been dissecting the lyrics to every song off Swift’s 12th studio album – but no track has garnered as much attention as ‘Actually Romantic’. Advertisement Taylor Swift, 2025. Credit: Mert Alas & Marcus Piggot The lyrics – while cryptic – seem to contain enough hints for fans to believe that the track is a swipe at Charli XCX. Its opening lines hit out at someone who’s “brave” when on cocaine, and “wrote a song saying it makes you sick to see my face”, all of which point at the ‘Brat’ artist. Taylor sings to kick off the track: “I heard you call me ‘Boring Barbie’ when the coke’s got you brave / High-fived my ex and then said you’re glad he ghosted me / Wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face/ Some people might be offended / But it’s actually… Read More →

Robyn teases new music at Acne Studios’ Paris Fashion Week show

Robyn previewed new music at Acne Studios’ show at Paris Fashion Week – check out clips below. READ MORE: The Big Read – Robyn: “I danced a lot on my own” The Swedish pop icon hasn’t released an album since 2018’s critically acclaimed ‘Honey‘, but speculation about her imminent return was fuelled last month when her longtime collaborator, Klas Åhlund, appeared on the Nordmark Pod and said he had “just finished a new Robyn album that’s coming out”. Advertisement On October 1, Acne Studios held its SS26 womenswear runway show at Collège des Bernardins in Paris. Jonny Johansson is the co-founder of the fashion house and a long-time friend of Robyn’s, and she and Patrik Berger arranged the score for the show. Among the material on the soundtrack was a revamped take on ‘Robotboy’ that saw her joined by Yung Lean. Speaking about teaming up with him, Robyn told Dazed Digital he was ”a kindred spirit” and said the song felt like “it was made for him” rather than her. Touching on creating together a soundtrack to the show, she continued: “There was an unexpected dialogue between the music and the clothes that I just didn’t see coming”. St Etienne’s International reviewed: cherished indie pop trio go out on a party high

Their hip vision of a swinging London Back in 1992, Saint Etienne issued the insouciant invitation to “Join Our Club”. For indie pop lovers of style and taste, it was an easy RSVP. The Britpop-adjacent trio of Bob Stanley, Pete Wiggs and Sarah Cracknell were well connected but never exclusive. If anything, they were nerdy enthusiasts, hymning their hip vision of a swinging London, which drew fondly across decades of post-war British, nay European, pop culture – film, literature and visual art as much as music – while deftly bodyswerving the more jingoistic connotations of Cool Britannia. More than 30 years on, their 13th album is a similarly celebratory summons to their leaving party. Although they have not announced a hard split, International will be Saint Etienne’s last album and, like the final scene of It’s A Wonderful Life, there’s a heart-warming gathering of old friends, new kids, well-wishers and elder statesmen queuing up to mark the occasion, from Vince Clarke and Nick Heyward to Erol Alkan and Confidence Man. No tears – okay, some tears – for this beloved band. Advertisement They carved their own niche as a renaissance pop act The guestlist is bolstered by spoken word cameos… Read More →

Thomas Pynchon’s Shadow Ticket reviewed: darkly comic detective caper set during Prohibition-era

“The Al Capone of Cheese” Thomas Pynchon’s ninth novel starts out as a case for Hicks McTaggart, a private dick hired to find the daughter of “the Al Capone of Cheese”. (“A byword of terror in milk sheds throughout the land”.) Hicks is “a big ape with a light touch” whose style of investigation is peculiarly passive. As he is spirited from Milwaukee onto a transatlantic ocean liner and then to Europe, where fascism is sprouting, he becomes a hatstand for the author’s playful use of pulp detective tropes. The book completes Pynchon’s fictional jigsaw of the 20th century. The story’s relationship with time and place is fluid. The main feature of Milwaukee in 1932 is that it isn’t quite Chicago. Pynchon refers to “pre-fascist space time”. Also “a strange time .. one of those queer little passageways behind the scenery”. Readers in search of contemporary echoes won’t be disappointed. In a tale of goons, conspiracists, electoral jiggery-pokery and popcorn cooked in goose fat, the most feared of organised crime groupings is New York Real Estate. Send us your questions for Cameron Crowe!

There really aren’t enough films where the hero is a music journalist. But thanks to Cameron Crowe, there is at least one: 2000’s Oscar-winning Almost Famous, which helped to bring some much-needed legitimacy to the notion of asking philosophical questions to spaced-out guitarists for a living. Advertisement Crowe, of course, was once that teenage music journalist himself: Rolling Stone’s youngest ever correspondent, charming his way into the confidence of bands like The Allman Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles and Led Zeppelin. In 1981, he wrote Fast Times At Ridgemont High, which was turned into a cult movie of the same name. Crowe soon became an acclaimed film director himself, making Singles, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous and Vanilla Sky among others, before eventually gravitating back towards the music world with documentaries about Pearl Jam and David Crosby, and an upcoming biopic of Joni Mitchell. Now he’s about to publish his memoir, The Uncool, which takes us back to those halcyon ’70s days, with a cover endorsement from Stevie Nicks. Advertisement And while he’s in reflective mood, he’s kindly submitted to a gentle grilling from you, the Uncut readers. So, what do you want to ask a titan of both the music writing… Read More →
