Pavement release first recorded music in 25 years ahead of new biopic

Pavement have released their first new music in over 25 years – and it is a cover of Jim Pepper’s ‘Witchitai-To’. The legendary US indie band have not released any new recorded music since their 1999 EP ‘Major Leagues’, the last release before their split later that year. They did reunite for a comeback tour in 2022, however, and during those shows, they played ‘Witchitai-To’ regularly. Advertisement The new release was captured during the rehearsal for one of those shows, with the band bringing life to the track that was first released as part of Pepper’s band Everything Is Everything’s self-titled debut album in 1969. Listen here: [embedded content] News of the release of the track first surfaced in December when Scott Kanneberg, aka Spiral Stairs, told the Kreative Kontrol podcast that “there will be a new Pavement song on the soundtrack” to Pavements, the band’s part-documentary, part-biopic feature film. Directed by Alex Ross Perry (Her Smell), the movie blends fact and fiction, including scenes depicting the band preparing for a museum exhibit that features up-and-coming bands playing Pavement songs. It also shows Perry casting, writing and directing a jukebox musical based on the band, while also trying to bring a… Read More →

Ricky Gervais says producers sometimes question his jokes: “They don’t know whether it’s OK or not”

Ricky Gervais has said that producers sometimes question his jokes, as “they don’t know whether it’s OK or not.” READ MORE: Ricky Gervais: “The people in ‘After Life’ aren’t freaks. Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp – they’re freaks!” The comedian was reflecting on his career in a new interview with the LA Times, ahead of being honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today (May 30). Advertisement He was asked if he’s ever realised he would have to “defend” a joke, to which he responded: “Oh no, it all comes and goes. It’s cyclic,” he told the publication. “People get nervous and that’s just always been there from day one. People get worried and then I say, well, this is why it’s OK.” Gervais revealed that sometimes the concern has come from colleagues in the industry. “Sometimes it’s an executive producer or a broadcaster who just wants some ammunition to defend it. Because sometimes, they don’t know whether it’s OK or not, they just don’t want to get complaints. “If I can go “listen, this is why it’s OK,” then they often trust me because I can defend it. It’s not me sitting in the room going, “what’s the… Read More →

When Bruce Springsteen Came To Britain

Just about everybody who’s been to a Bruce Springsteen show has a story, and Hazel Wilkinson’s is particularly lovely one. She was a teenager when her brother queued all night for tickets to see Springsteen and the E Street Band at Manchester Apollo in May 1981, on the European leg of the River tour. They were at the front of the stalls when, two songs into the second half, Bruce sang “Sherry Darling”. During the saxophone solo he peered down at Hazel, called her up, and danced across the stage with her for a minute or two. While the blog entry is blocked behind a subscription paywall, it sees Richtman claiming that Schafer is being seriously considered for the role of the titular Princess Zelda. I played it as a kid and I still play it now. Who knows! That would be pretty cool.” In March this year, progress on the Legend of Zelda film picked up speed, when it was announced that the live-action adaptation will be released in cinemas on March 26, 2027. Strange Life

“I’m not sure we should have agreed to this,” Stephen Malkmus muses during the extraordinary new documentary Pavements. “Has there ever been a good movie about a rock band?” There certainly hasn’t been a rock doc like this one, which eschews convention at every stage in favour of meta-realities and roleplay, echoing the band’s own approach on albums like Wowee Zowee. “It’s a sprawling record with lots of different ideas positioning for your attention,” explains guitarist Scott ‘Spiral Stairs’ Kannberg. “The movie is sort of like that. Here’s this band… and what’s real and what’s not?” THE JULY 2025 ISSUE OF UNCUT IS AVAILABLE TO ORDER NOW: STARRING NICK DRAKE, A 15-TRACK NEW MUSIC CD, THE WHO, BLACK SABBATH, BRIAN ENO, MATT BERNINGER, PULP, BOB WEIR AND MORE Advertisement Pavement’s label Matador commissioned the project from director Alex Ross Perry, known for caustically witty, literary films such as 2014’s Listen Up Philip. “Originally when we agreed to have a film made, we didn’t really want to be in it,” says Kannberg. Robert Forster – Strawberries

The ability to draw out the extraordinary from the everyday is one evergreen hallmark of engaging songwriting. Robert Forster has been sketching self-contained emotional vignettes and spinning semi-autobiographical yarns since his days in The Go-Betweens, the Antipodean high-water mark of guitar jangle. On his ninth solo album, Strawberries, Forster once again knits together the ordinary and the remarkable, furring the edges with a craftsman’s dexterity. Beginning with just his guitar and laconic drawl, Forster spins out the tale of a night of loud hotel sex into a poignant epic – funny, dry, full of detail, told in retrospect over nearly eight elegant minutes as other musicians swell surreptitiously around him. Aristotelian unities are at play – one night, plus breakfast; various locations in Edinburgh, selective contexts, nothing extraneous. “Fuck!” exclaims one of the lovers in the morning, a rare instance of earthy language in Forster’s catalogue, in sharp… Read More →

Alan Sparhawk – With Trampled By Turtles

“I can please myself with the things that I seek out,” declared Alan Sparhawk on “Station”, from last year’s extraordinary White Roses, My God. It read like creative self-affirmation with a note of shock, as he moved forward in the wake of Mimi Parker’s death and the resulting end of Low. In recent years those “things” he’s been seeking have included laid-back funk (as played with his son Cyrus, in Derecho Rhythm Section), mutant electro-funk (in the quartet Damien, also with Cyrus) and doom-sludge riffery (with Feast Of Lanterns). Introducing…The History Of Rock, 1969

The latest issue of our archival magazine. This month, it’s 1969… Advertisement A word much in use this year is “heavy”. It might apply to the weight of your take on the blues, as with Fleetwood Mac or Led Zeppelin. It might mean the originality of Jethro Tull or King Crimson. It might equally apply to an individual – to Eric Clapton, for example the Beatles are the saints of the 1960s, and George Harrison an especially “heavy person”. This year heavy people flock together. Clapton and Steve Winwood join up in Blind Faith. Steve Marriott and Pete Frampton meet in Humble Pie. Crosby, Stills and Nash admit a new member, Neil Young. Supergroups, or more informal supersessions, serve as musical summit meetings for those who are reluctant to have their work tied down by the now antiquated notion of the “group”. Trouble of one kind or another this year awaits the leading examples of this classic formation. Our cover stars the Rolling Stones this year part company with founder member Brian Jones. The Beatles, too, are changing – how, John Lennon wonders, can the group hope to contain three contributing writers? Advertisement The Beatles diversification has become problematic. Witch Fever urge Download festival to “rethink statement implementing ambiguous and transphobic EHRC guidelines”

Witch Fever have encouraged Download Festival to clarify their statement published earlier over concerns that the festival is “implementing ambiguous and transphobic EHRC guidelines”. Green Day, Sleep Token and KoRn will all be first-time headliners, and other names on the bill include Weezer, Sex Pistols featuring Frank Carter, Jimmy Eat World, Poppy, Loathe, Jerry Cantrell and more. Numerous artists including NOAHFINNCE, Zand and Pinkshift called the festival out online and Witch Fever was among them, calling the policy “a complete fuckin’ tragedy”.
