The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the organisation behind the Eurovision Song Contest, has released a lengthy statement explaining the reasons why Ukraine can’t host the 2023 event. READ MORE: Ukrainian Eurovision entry Kalush Orchestra: “This is the highest responsibility possible” It’s tradition that the winning country of the annual song competition hosts the following year’s event and despite Ukraine’s folk-rap entry Kalush Orchestra topping the table, it was announced earlier this month that the EBU would be looking for a different country to host the event in 2023. “The EBU fully understands the disappointment that greeted the announcement that the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest cannot be staged in Ukraine, this year’s winning country,” the statement began. “The decision was guided by the EBU’s responsibility to ensure the conditions are met to guarantee the safety and security of everyone working and participating in the event, the planning of which needs to begin immediately in the host country.” Advertisement According to the EBU, over 10,000 members of staff and 30,000 fans are involved in the contest each year and “their welfare is our primary concern”. Soccer Mommy Steps Into The Void On Sometimes, Forever

By Grant Sharples From the first few moments of “With U,” cascading synth arpeggios crest an enormous wall of sound. It’s not a texture that you’d typically associate with Soccer Mommy, the performing/recording sobriquet that Nashville native Sophie Allison uses to make ‘90s-inspired indie rock. On astonishing, guitar-forward records like 2018’s Clean and 2020’s Color Theory, Allison’s songs of heartbreak and anguish launched her to indie stardom, earning her tours with Kacey Musgraves and Paramore, a Grammy nomination, and even an iconic Bernie Sanders meme. Her work eventually caught the ears of Daniel Lopatin, who makes experimental electronic music as Oneohtrix Point Never and boasts The Weeknd’s Dawn FM and the Uncut Gems score on his resume. “Once he was interested, I was personally pretty much like, I wanna do that,” Allison tells MTV News. “I don’t even need to hear his ideas. I trust his style, and I think it would really make something interesting and cool.” Allison understands that the idea of her confessional guitar rock as honed by a shapeshifting electronic auteur sounds odd on paper, but it’s a collaboration that expands her idiosyncratic sound in all the right ways. Soccer Mommy’s third album, Sometimes, Forever (out… Read More →

How LGBTQ+ Artists Made TikTok A Space For Sharing Their Stories

In honor of Pride Month, MTV News set out to spotlight the LGBTQ+ artists creating the contemporary anthems that soundtrack queer spaces and report on the new frontiers in today’s streaming landscape helping them to do so. As we did last year, we’ve also set out to profile emerging LGBTQ+ artists and celebrate established ones making waves. Welcome to Queer Music Week. By Max Freedman Once upon a time, the Oakland ukulele-pop musician Mxmtoon thought TikTok was an app for, as she tells MTV News, “8-year-olds who play Fortnite.” That changed when her 2019 single “Prom Dress” went viral on the now-ubiquitous social media platform. There, the song has racked up 447,600 streams to date, and Mxmtoon’s TikTok channel has 2.8 million followers and 131.9 million likes. Now, the 21-year-old artist is one of many LGBTQ+ musicians using the app to make their music and full selves heard while connecting more closely with their audiences, especially their LGBTQ+ fans. In conversations with MTV News, Mxmtoon (who also goes by Maia but keeps her last name out of the public for her privacy) and other LGBTQ+ musicians say they’ve used TikTok to get their music to queer listeners more quickly and directly… Read More →
