Flasher’s Utopian Joy Is For Everyone

In December 2021, Taylor Mulitz, one-half of the arty and infectious indie duo Flasher, left a digital marketing job he’d held for a year. “Finally, I’m free!” he thought after he gave notice. The timing fit: Flasher’s expansive second album, Love Is Yours, which he’d recorded with bandmate Emma Baker in mid-2020 as a pandemic summer raged, was nearly ready for release. (It’s out June 17 via Domino.) It had been almost four years since Flasher’s debut, and Mulitz felt ready to jump back in. For fun, he made a few goofy TikToks to plug the first single drop in March, incorporating Barenaked Ladies’s eternal 1998 hit “One Week.” But as he quickly discovered, the content machine never stops churning. “Now that I’m promoting the album, I’m like, oh, this is so fucked up, because I’m taking everything that I learned from that [job] into [making TikToks],” he tells MTV News with a wry smile. “My mental health declined so much because I was spending more time on TikTok than I ever had before.” Thankfully, unlike celebrity pop stars beholden to corporate engines, Flasher are free to create at their own pace. If they want to race cars in the… Read More →

Airport disrupted by fans filming Download Festival with drones

A runway at East Midlands airport was closed and flights diverted this weekend (June 10) due to a fan filming Download Festival with a drone. The festival is taking place at Donington Park this weekend (June 10-12) just one mile from the airport. Statements from the airport, Leicestershire Police and the festival say that drones used to film the rock festival led to the delays and one runway being closed. Advertisement “It beggars belief that someone would do this,” the airport’s managing director Clare James said (via Daily Mail). “It’s a criminal offence, it is very inconvenient for passengers, it costs thousands of pounds for cargo carriers but most of all it is a flight safety risk. “We have detection equipment here, we are working with police, so my message to whoever is doing this is just stop or face prosecution.” Crowd at Download Festival Pilot 2021. Watch Lorde cover Bananarama’s ‘Cruel Summer’ at Primavera Sound 2022

During her headlining set at this year’s Primavera Sound festival, Lorde delivered a cover of Bananarama’s 1983 hit ‘Cruel Summer’. READ MORE: Lorde live in Minneapolis: artist for the ages crafts euphoric, three-act extravaganza The Kiwi singer has long been known to indulge in cover songs: in the past few months alone, she’s put her idiosyncratic spin on ‘Run Away With Me’ by Carly Rae Jepsen, ‘The End Has No End’ by The Strokes and ‘HENTAI’ by Rosalía. Her ‘Cruel Summer’ cover came exactly halfway through her Primavera set – which she performed on the Pull & Bear stage last night (June 10) – sandwiched between ‘Mood Ring’ from last year’s ‘Solar Power’ and ‘Liability’ from 2017’s ‘Melodrama’. Justin Bieber reveals facial paralysis from Ramsay Hunt syndrome

Justin Bieber has alerted fans to his recent diagnosis with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which has temporarily paralysed the entire right side of his face. Vieux Farka Touré – Les Racines

Imagine being Jimi Hendrix’s son, and forging your own path as a musician. Vieux Farka Touré has carried that weight, wrestling with the legacy of his father Ali Farka Touré, the Malian guitarist whose ’90s albums with Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder introduced western audiences to the blues’ diasporic loop, from the slave ships to the USA and back to Africa, where young Ali heard John Lee Hooker and shivered with recognition. Touré Senior closed that circuit of influence, defining what came to be termed desert blues. ORDER NOW: Queen are on the cover of the latest issue of Uncut Vieux Farka Touré, meanwhile, went his own way. Blessed with similarly virtuosic guitar talent, he defied Ali’s initial disapproval to become a musician. Starting his professional career in 2006, the year his father died, he explored different collaborative byways as he established himself, working with jazz great John Scofield and Allman Brothers alumnus Derek Trucks on The Secret (2011), and two improvised albums with Israeli musicians as The Touré-Rachael Collective. In truth, he’s never wandered far from Malian music. But, 16 years after his father’s death, this sixth solo album finally immerses him in Ali’s sound. It’s as if, having made… Read More →

Angel Olsen – Big Time

Angel Olsen’s records are most often characterised as heartbreak music – love, loss and loneliness expressed with almost desperate intensity and a directness that has its own poetry. It’s a reasonable take but, as is the case with so many female singer-songwriters, it overlooks her music’s thoughtfulness and ignores Olsen’s agency, as if the artistic decisions she makes always take a back seat to the emotions that inform her songs. ORDER NOW: Queen are on the cover of the latest issue of Uncut A couple of recent projects alone, though, prove that internal weather systems don’t direct all of Olsen’s creative moves. Two years after the triumph of 2019’s All Mirrors, which saw her teaming up with Jherek Bischoff and John Congleton for a synth-blasted set full of lavish orchestrations and saturnine theatricality, came a covers EP. A move so leftfield it played as almost frivolous, “Aisles” saw Olsen taking on the likes of Laura Branigan’s “Gloria” and (most startlingly) “The Safety Dance” by Men Without Hats. It was, it seems, a way for her to loosen her reputation for unbending conviction. Around the same time, there was a writing and recording hook-up with Sharon Van Etten for “Like I Used… Read More →

I thought it would just alienate people.” He added: “I stopped taking drugs and I stopped the band. The two things seemed to go hand in hand. Laurie Anderson says Lou Reed archive won’t be housed in Texas “because of guns”

Laurie Anderson has shared why the Lou Reed: Caught Between The Twisted Stars exhibition was nearly held in Texas but ended up in New York City instead. READ MORE: Laurie Anderson’s playlist reveals the real Lou Reed The archive, which chronicles the life and work of Reed through images, voices, and music from the star and his collaborators, will be hosted at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts starting today (June 9). Anderson, Reed’s widow, recently told The New York Times that she’d first selected the Harry Ransom Center in Austin for the exhibit, but decided against that plan after Texas Governor Greg Abbot, signed the campus-carry bill in 2015. The bill allowed people licensed to carry a handgun in Texas to carry a concealed handgun on university campuses.
