Hans Zimmer lauds viral Ukrainian pianist during London show

Hans Zimmer took time during his London gig earlier this week to pay tribute to a Ukrainian pianist who went viral for playing the Inception theme in a bomb shelter. Earlier this month, footage spread online of a young pianist named Alex, which saw the musician refusing to stop playing Zimmer’s theme song for the 2010 film even after air raid sirens began to sound in a subway station in Lviv, western Ukraine. “When bomb sirens began, police asked everyone to move inside the railway station,” photographer John Stanmeyer wrote on Instagram alongside footage of the incident. “Alex wouldn’t stop, playing his piano louder against the air raid warning. But as the 27-year-old settles into a late-night Zoom call, dressed casually in a red hoodie and complementary blue Yankees cap, he seems more like the boy next door than music’s next big thing. Billy Bragg and Beton speak out on Ukrainian band’s use of Stepan Bandera imagery

Billy Bragg and Ukrainian punks Beton have spoken out after an online debate emerged when the band were accused of co-opting far-right imagery. READ MORE: Ukrainian artists on the Russian crisis: “Now is the time to push for change” Last week, Beton reworked The Clash’s iconic track ‘London Calling’ to create ‘Kyiv Calling’, a protest song against the ongoing Russian invasion. Their rendition was then shared by The Clash’s social media accounts, as well as by Bragg. Bragg then deleted his share and issued a statement, after images were brought to his attention of Breton members wearing Ramones-inspired t-shirts, with the word ‘Ramones’ at the top of the logo replaced with the word ‘Banderas’. “Although all of the names within the circle were not visible, there was one that clearly read ‘Stepan’,” explained Bragg. “This is deeply troubling. Stepan Bandera was a far-right Ukrainian politician who collaborated with the Nazis during the occupation of Ukraine and whose followers were complicit in the Holocaust. That he did these things in the name of Ukrainian independence from the Soviet Union has led some present day far right nationalists to adopt his image in their decade long struggle with Russia.” “The knock on effect of… Read More →

Lizzo reaches settlement in ‘Truth Hurts’ songwriting dispute

A federal judge has moved to dismiss the long-running lawsuit surrounding Lizzo‘s ‘Truth Hurts’, after attorneys from both sides stated the parties reached a settlement on Friday (March 17). READ MORE: ‘Rumors’, Lizzo’s new song with Cardi B, is a dizzying, multi-layered return Each side will be required to pay their own legal fees, according to Rolling Stone, although no details have been shared. The attorneys asked for “dismissal of the entire action without prejudice.” Released in September 2017, the song became a subject of controversy two years later when the ‘Juice’ star was accused of lifting the “melody, lyrics and chords” from a demo titled ‘Healthy’, including one of its most famous lines: “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100% that bitch”. Advertisement Lizzo denied the allegations and sued the three songwriters in question — brothers Justin and Jeremiah Raisen, and Justin “Yves” Rothman — in October 2019, seeking “a judicial declaration” that the Raisens and Rothman “did not co-author ‘Truth Hurts,’ and have no right to co-own that work or to share in its profits.” In 2020, Lizzo was herself countersued by the musicians. Midlake – For The Sake of Bethel Woods

It’s been well over eight years since their last album, 2013’s Antiphon, which is a high-risk absence even for a cultish band like Midlake. The interim, however, has been busy with family life and various members’ projects: guitarist Joey McClellan, keyboard player/flautist Jesse Chandler and vocalist/bandleader Eric Pulido all released solo LPs, as well as teaming up with Ben Bridwell, Fran Healy, Alex Kapranos, Jason Lytle and bandmate McKenzie Smith to record an LP as BNQT. ORDER NOW: Paul McCartney is on the cover in the latest issue of Uncut If these experiences helped recalibrate and fortify a Midlake in limbo, it seems there was an extra, more personally meaningful push: Chandler’s late father appeared in a dream, telling him that Midlake should reunite. As Pulido explained to Uncut: “A great catalyst for our hiatus in 2014 was the overall health of the band and the desire to invest ourselves in other endeavours. I didn’t want to [get back together] if it was out of obligation and definitely not by dragging everyone along. It was quite the opposite and, although Jesse’s dream did have a powerful and poetic influence, we all had our respective inspiration that collectively brought us to this… Read More →
