Harry Shearer Has Been in 800 Episodes of ‘The Simpsons’ – But Has Never Watched It

Harry Shearer, the legendary voice actor behind some of The Simpsons‘ most iconic residents, has revealed a surprising secret: he has never actually watched the show. Despite his prolific tenure spanning over 800 episodes, the actor remains detached from the final product of his labor.

The Spinal Tap star has been a fixture of the long-running animated series since its inception, famously providing the voices for characters such as Mr. Burns, Kent Brockman, and Ned Flanders. While the show has aired for 36 seasons and is currently preparing for its 37th, Shearer maintains that he has never sat down to view his own work.

In a recent interview with The I, Shearer was asked whether the classic 1990s episodes of The Simpsons—widely considered the show’s creative peak—had aged well. His response was candid: “I don’t know. I haven’t seen it.” When the interviewer noted that the episodes air continuously on television and remain beloved by fans, Shearer replied, “That’s what I hear! But it’s good to hear you say that.”

Despite his lack of viewership, Shearer expressed a genuine appreciation for the craft of voice acting and the variety the show provides. “I still enjoy playing all these characters,” he explained. “It was the reason I did this instead of some other television show where you’re pretty much limited to one character. I liked the idea of the variety of characters, and I still like that.”

As The Simpsons continues to evolve, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down. Beyond the television series, fans are eagerly anticipating a second feature film slated for 2027, marking two decades since the original movie hit theaters. The characters have also found massive success in the digital space, with a recent Fortnite collaboration drawing over 80 million players and accumulating 780 million hours of playtime.
