FKA Twigs and David Byrne bring energy and ecstasy to day one of Bilbao BBK Live 2026
Celebrating its landmark 20th anniversary year, Bilbao BBK Live has pulled out all the stops for its 2026 edition. Returning to its stunning home on the scenic slopes of Mount Cobetas, the Basque Country’s premier music weekender has once again proven to be a magnet for the industry’s most creative visionaries. Kicking off the festivities on day one, FKA Twigs and David Byrne carried on the festival’s tradition of excellence with a pair of boundary-pushing shows that defined the opening night.
With dance stages tucked into the surrounding woods, a surprise guerrilla-style set from Spanish rock heroes Alcalá Norte, and a massive headline turn from Calvin Harris, the atmosphere was electric. Even a light summer rain could not dampen the spirits of the crowd as they gathered for a night of musical discovery.
FKA Twigs: A Vision of Euphoric Lust
FKA Twigs transformed Mount Cobetas into a throbbing, ‘Eusexua’-fuelled club. Utilizing poles, harnesses, and a striking stage design, the multi-disciplinary artist turned her performance into a spectacle of movement and high art. Drawing from her latest studio LP, ‘Eusexua’, the set was defined by a sense of transcendent, euphoric connection.

The performance was a masterclass in visual hedonism. From the intricate choreography of her dancers to the crystalline power of her vocals, Twigs created an immersive universe that felt both intimate and grand. It was, without question, one of the most visually arresting and emotionally charged sets in the festival’s history.
David Byrne: A Party of Positivity
In a stark but welcome contrast, David Byrne brought a sense of wholesome, joyous energy to the San Miguel stage. Continuing the spirit of his acclaimed ‘American Utopia’ tour, the Talking Heads frontman utilized a company of performers to present a show centered on kindness and empathy.

Byrne’s set served as an emotional balm, with the artist declaring love as an “act of resistance” in a fractured world. Through a blend of timeless hits and thoughtful storytelling, he encouraged the audience to find common ground. As the final notes of ‘Burning Down The House’ echoed across the mountain, the sense of hope and collective joy was palpable.
The Best of the Rest
The day also featured standout performances from rising stars. Australia’s Radio Free Alice impressed with their post-punk sensibilities, while the harmony-laden offerings of Folk Bitch Trio provided a beautiful, stripped-back highlight. Meanwhile, Hemlocke Springs brought sci-fi visuals and raw charisma to the Johnnie Walker stage, and Belén Aguilera delivered a camp, high-energy pop spectacle that felt destined for international stages.

Closing the night, Calvin Harris proved why he remains a festival staple. With a set packed with massive anthems and an impressive production, the Scottish DJ ensured the opening night of Bilbao BBK Live 2026 ended on a high note, leaving the crowd energized for the days to come.
