Kylie Minogue Reflects on the Lasting Impact of Her Cancer Diagnosis
Australian pop icon Kylie Minogue has opened up about the profound and lasting impact of her breast cancer diagnosis, which occurred over two decades ago. Reflecting on the life-altering event from 2005, the singer admitted that the experience is “still with me today.”
At the time of her diagnosis, Minogue was 36 years old. The news forced her to cancel her highly anticipated headline performance at Glastonbury and postpone several tour dates, marking a significant turning point in both her personal life and career. In a recent interview with BBC News, she described the initial moment of receiving the news as a state of pure “shock.”
“You’re trying to understand something you’ve never thought about before,” Minogue explained. “It’s a crash course. It’s very deep and extended, and it’s still with me today in many ways.”

This candid reflection comes ahead of the release of her new three-part Netflix documentary, titled Kylie, which arrives on the platform tomorrow (Wednesday, May 20). While she has been approached many times in the past to participate in a film about her life, she had previously declined. “In the end, I just had to take the plunge and really open myself up a little more,” she said. “If not now, when?”
Minogue has been open about her journey in the past, having previously revealed in 2008 that she was initially misdiagnosed. In 2023, she spoke about the ongoing process of healing, noting that the trauma of the disease “resides within you.”
To coincide with the documentary launch, Minogue is also set to release a brand-new single titled ‘Light Up’. The release follows a busy period for the star, who continues to look toward the future of her music. Speaking to NME late last year, she hinted at potential new material for 2026, though she remained characteristically mysterious about the sound. “I like to stay very non-committal, even in my mind, about where I would go with new music,” she shared. “I don’t actually know how I could describe it.”
After her 2005 diagnosis, Minogue eventually made a triumphant return to Worthy Farm in 2019, where she performed in the coveted ‘Legends Slot’ on the Pyramid Stage, a moment she later described as a “massive acknowledgement” of her career.
As she continues to share her story, Minogue remains a resilient figure in the music industry, balancing her legacy with a constant drive to create and evolve.
