Harry Styles paid a poignant tribute to the late artist David Hockney and reflected on his formative years in One Direction as he launched his record-breaking residency at Wembley Stadium on June 12. The star is set to perform 12 nights at the iconic London venue, marking a significant milestone in his Together, Together world tour.
Hockney, whose celebrated portrait of Styles was featured at the National Portrait Gallery in 2023, passed away on June 11 at the age of 88. During his set, Styles honored the artist by projecting a quote from the painter onto the stadium’s massive screens: “What an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because of course art is about sharing. You wouldn’t be an artist unless you wanted to share an experience, a thought.”

This residency marks a new high for the musician, as he aims to break the record for the most shows performed at Wembley in a single tour, surpassing the previous record held by Coldplay. The London shows follow the tour’s commencement in Amsterdam and will be followed by international stops in cities including São Paulo, Mexico City, and Sydney. The London dates feature support from Shania Twain, who joined the stage to perform a selection of hits and new material.
The evening was deeply personal for Styles, who took a moment to acknowledge the proximity of Wembley Arena, where his journey began. “Just outside of this building, just next door, is Wembley Arena, and 16 years ago, my sister brought me to London for the very first time for my X Factor audition,” he shared with the crowd. “So driving here today, and any time I come through Wembley, means so much to me, ‘cause right in that building next door, I was put into a band. We were called One Direction.”
The setlist included subtle nods to his past, with a string section playing a medley of One Direction hits like “Night Changes” and “History” during a transition. Styles also expressed gratitude to his family, specifically his sister Gemma and his mother, for their support throughout his career.

The Together, Together tour continues to support his latest album, Kiss All The Time. Disco Occasionally, which has been praised for its exploratory sound and artistic depth. Beyond the music, Styles is actively supporting the industry, donating £1 from every ticket sold to LIVE’s levy to protect grassroots music venues.
