Voice of Baceprot on becoming the first Indonesian band to play Glastonbury: “We thought it was so out of reach”

This month, Voice of Baceprot will play Glastonbury – making them the first Indonesian band to play the festival in its history. NME caught up with the metal band to talk about the career milestone, their decision to go independent, and more in the interview below. On Glasto’s Friday morning (June 28) VOB will kick things off at Woodsies, the area Glastonbury inaugurated last year following a rebrand of its iconic John Peel stage. The band will warm Woodsies’ main stage for the likes of Jamie xx, Kim Gordon, James Blake, Kneecap and more. This will make the trio of Firda ‘Marsya’ Kurnia (guitar/vocals), Euis Siti ‘Sitti’ Aisyah (drums) and Widi Rahmawati (bass) the first Indonesian act to perform at Glastonbury – a landmark event in their 10-year career. 2023 was already plenty busy for VOB: they released their debut album ‘Retas’ to acclaim, embarked on their first US tour and became Cover stars on NME. So it came as a surprise to some when the trio decided to leave their label and go independent. “Perhaps it’s time for us to learn to do things by ourselves,” guitarist and vocalist Marsya told NME. After a few years living in the… Read More →

Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham shares support for the £1 arena ticket levy to save grassroots venues: “Urgent action is needed”

Andy Burnham, Manchester Mayor, has backed calls for a £1 levy to be added to the costs of arena show tickets to help save grassroots music venues. Earlier this year, the Music Venue Trust delivered their full report into the state of the sector for 2023, showing the “disaster” facing live music with venues closing at a rate of around two per week. Presented at Westminster, the MVT echoed their calls for a levy on tickets on gigs at arena size and above and for major labels and such to pay back into the grassroots scene, arguing that “the big companies are now going to have to answer for this”. The Music Venue Trust has pushed for this system to be introduced as a way of safeguarding the UK’s talent pipeline, similar to how the Premier League funds local football clubs. A similar system is in use in France, where 3.5 per cent of the gross value of tickets sold goes back to a grassroots fund which artists, promoters and venues can apply for. Last month, the cross-party Culture, Media and Sport Committee, have shared a report highlighting the importance of grassroots venues, calling for immediate financial help through “a levy-funded support fund and a targeted temporary… Read More →

Beth Gibbons – Uber Eats Music Hall, Berlin, June 2

A storm is brewing in the skies as Beth Gibbons prepares to take the stage of Berlin’s most unappetisingly named venue. There’s a wary anticipation inside the building too. Her debut solo album Lives Outgrown only emerged two days ago, and its still-unfamiliar intimacy is foreboding. When muted strings fill the auditorium before the lights have even dimmed, it’s a nervous hush that falls over the crowd rather than wild applause. As overtures go, it’s hardly emphatic, and yet the moment the seven-piece band enters, the atmosphere changes, the air suddenly electric. JONI MITCHELL IS ON THE COVER OF THE NEW UNCUT – ORDER YOUR COPY HERE! Wearing a casual black sweater and cargo pants, nervously rubbing her hands until forced to step to the microphone, Gibbons remains out of the spotlight as long as possible. But when she finally delivers “Tell Me Who You Are Today”’s defining opening lines – “If I could change the way I feel/ If I could make my body heal” – there’s no doubt middle-age has done nothing to soften her powers. No-one sings like her. Bewitching is an understatement. Advertisement Nonetheless, it’s equally clear that tonight is about far more than just ‘that… Read More →

Liam Gallagher – Utilita Arena, Sheffield, June 1

The show begins with a huge digital clock literally rolling back the years from 2024, but Oasis gigs were never like this when their era-defining debut came out 30 years ago. A spectacular stage set recreates the album cover at arena size, complete with giant floating globe, flamingoes and the portrait of Burt Bacharach. JONI MITCHELL IS ON THE COVER OF THE NEW UNCUT – ORDER YOUR COPY HERE! Before showtime, 12,500 eager fans yell along as The Stone Roses’ “I Am The Resurrection” blares from the PA at tinnitus-inducing volume. When the clock finally reaches 1994 and Liam Gallagher launches into album opener “Rock ’n’ Roll Star”, the place erupts to such a degree that it’s a wonder the roof doesn’t levitate above the building. Advertisement That song has kicked off Gallagher’s solo shows for years, though several Definitely Maybe numbers are relatively under-heard; a nine-piece band (including Oasis co-founder and guitarist Bonehead) make them all sound as fresh as a daisy. “Columbia” is darker and more brooding than on record. “Shakermaker” – performed for the first time in years – epitomises the Beatles-meets-Sex Pistols blueprint that influenced generations of guitar bands. Gallagher is now 51, but with his… Read More →

This is my local venue. I grew up in Shepherd’s Bush and I still live round here. It would be a real shame to see it disappear and we want to keep it going. So everyone get down to the gig!” Advertisement “Smaller music venues are the lifeblood of new music,” says Glen Matlock. “It’s in these intimate spaces… where the spirit of live music truly comes alive so we need to keep them going.” Says Frank Carter, “When the Sex Pistols call, you answer. Speed share punchy new single ‘The First Test’ – featuring a flute in its breakdown

Speed have shared a hard-hitting new single, ‘The First Test’, which has caught attention online for using a flute in its breakdown. The Australian hardcore band’s new song is taken from their forthcoming album ‘Only One Mode’, which will land on July 12 via Flatspot Records in the US and Last Ride Records in Australia. It follows their 2022 debut EP ‘Gang Called Speed’. Tackling the experience of finding oneself as a marginalised individual – in frontman Jem Siow’s case, as an Asian-Australian – the song notably features Siow playing a flute solo over its funk-infused breakdown. Check out ‘The First Test’ below: Advertisement [embedded content] Siow also plays the flute in the introduction to the album’s opening track and lead single, ‘Real Life Love’, an instrument he also teaches children how to play. “I always thought it would be too gimmicky,” he told NME in a recent interview. “We only ever wanted to incorporate stuff into the music that would further it.” So what changed? “It just came naturally – I heard the demos back and was like, ‘I reckon this could work’. If this band has taught me anything, it’s to embrace your identity and not shy away… Read More →

“The bugger in the short sleeves fucked my wife / Did it quick, then split…” John Cale’s notorious opening to his 1975 song “Guts” described Kevin Ayers’ seduction of his wife Cindy, the former Miss Cinderella of the GTOs, the night before he and Ayers were due to share a stage in London. It became the incident for which the June 1, 1974 concert at the Rainbow Theatre would be best remembered by rock historians. JONI MITCHELL IS ON THE COVER OF THE NEW UNCUT – ORDER YOUR COPY HERE! The idea for the concert was cooked up over a lunch for five at an Italian restaurant called Gatamelata on Kensington High Street. At the table were Ayers, Cale, Nico, Brian Eno, and me.
