‘Road To Vostok’ is moving away from Unity

Road To Vostok, the post-apocalyptic single-player survival game from a solo developer, has revealed a Godot version after the controversial changes to Unity’s fees. “I’ve been using Unity for over 11 years which means over 4,000 days of working with this software,” said Antti, the developer of Road To Vostok in a new video relaying his feelings on Unity. [embedded content] Advertisement He elaborated that Unity is a very popular engine for the Finnish game industry and so there is a large number of developers who are specialised in it. Ergo, the runtime fees will affect a lot of projects, personal and professional, as the cost of choosing this engine could hit them hard if their game is successful. For Antti himself, he asserted that he would still be developing Road To Vostok even if it hadn’t amassed a following over the years because it is “enjoyable” for him. “Now, for the first time in my game development career, there’s something that is interfering with that fun. And it’s this Unity situation and multiple side effects that are really complex to explain,” he continued. As a result, Antti made a small test build of Road To Vostok in Godot, which… Read More →

Ed Sheeran – ‘Autumn Variations’ review: a pumpkin-spiced snoozer

Earlier this year, Ed Sheeran went on an Album Campaign. It was for ‘-’ (pronounced Subtract), the final entry into his ‘mathematical-themed’ series, the decade-long run of albums that included 2011 debut ‘+’ and 2017’s chart behemoth ‘÷’. He went at lengths to do something that he’d actively avoided previously, mining his personal life and explaining what was going on behind the scenes: his best friend, social media innovator Jamal Edwards, had passed suddenly, and his wife had a life-threatening health battle during pregnancy. It was weighty stuff, and resulted in material that NME said “feels like a warm hug from a friend”. At the same time, he was bullish. Sheeran gave short shrift to music critics – sorry, Ed! – when he questioned the need for cultural criticism. “Why do you need to read a review?” he told Rolling Stone. Even so, his decision in working with The National’s Aaron Dessner, critical darling and Taylor Swift collaborator on 2020’s ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’, would have likely intrigued Sheeran if only to see how the music would be received. ‘Autumn Variations’, his second album in a matter of months, isn’t a flying start to this next phase of his catalogue. Noel Gallagher: “‘Definitely Maybe’ was the last great punk album”

Noel Gallagher has said in a new interview that Oasis‘ 1994 album, ‘Definitely Maybe’ was “the last great punk album”. We had no effects, barely any equipment, just loads of attitude, 12 cans of Red Stripe and ambition.” Comparing ‘Definitely Maybe’ with the Sex Pistols’ album, he added: “If you listen to that and ‘Never Mind The Bollocks’, they’re quite similar. That album was about the angst of being a teenager in 1977. Fast forward to 1994 and ‘Definitely Maybe’ is about the glory of being a teenager.” Advertisement He continued: “It’s being down the park with a ghetto blaster distilled. It’s no coincidence that it’s lasted this long. Maybe there have been technically better or bigger records since, but that album is the real fucking deal. There’s no bullshit on it.
