Suede’s Antidepressants reviewed: Britpop outliers on exhilarating, grandiose form

There was unfinished business… Before it was about sonic cathedrals, sex vampires and superhold hairspray, goth was the invention of distressed souls going slowly mad in cramped suburban homes on the southern fringes of London. It was David Bowie haunted by his brother’s asylum in Coulsdon’s Cane Hill Hospital on “The Bewlay Brothers”. It was Robert Smith wandering out of the new town dream of Crawley into the ancient European night of “A Forest”. And, most of all, it was Siouxsie And The Banshees divining an uncanny psychic vortex in a Chislehurst sitting room on “Happy House” and “Christine”. [embedded content] Watch the video for “Antidepressants”, filmed at Suede’s show at London’s Alexandra Palace in July 2024, see Brett Anderson prowl the stage with supernatural vigour, and you realise that Haywards Heath was always on that same cursed North Downs leyline. “This is the house that you saved up for,” Brett drawls, with all the estuary hauteur of Siouxsie in her prime. “There’s a room in the back in case you get scared.” There’s a perfectly judged pause, then the withering kiss-off: “Prisoner.” Advertisement For all that they’ve been tagged as Britpop heralds or glam revenants, and for all Brett’s… Read More →

Buckingham Nicks reviewed: mythologised 1973 folk-rock debut finally gets reissued

Holograms could be the answer… Take it with a pinch of salt, but it’s a tough time to be a Fleetwood Mac fan. Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks are still at loggerheads after the guitarist was turfed out of the band in 2018 – Nicks declared she was “no longer willing to work with him”; he suffered a heart attack soon after being fired – and the window has all but shut on what’s left of a Fleetwood Mac classic lineup reunion now that each member is pushing 80 and Christine McVie has gone. Holograms could be the answer. But before the credits roll on this most enduring rock’n’roll saga, a key chapter in the band’s origin story from a more harmonious time 52 years ago is finally being reissued. Buckingham Nicks, the mythologised 1973 folk-rock debut by Buckingham Nicks, as Lindsey and Stevie were introduced to the world back then, has been cleaned up and remastered from the original tapes and is in print for the first time since 1982 and on streaming services and CD for the first time. In some ways, this offers a sense of closure – let’s put it out properly before it’s too late…. Read More →

David Bowie was working on an “18th Century Musical” at the time of his death

David Bowie was working on a secret project at the time of his death in 2016, as reported by the BBC. ‘The Spectator’ was envisaged by Bowie to be an “18th Century Musical” based on the daily periodical of the same name, published by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele in London from 1711 to 1712. Advertisement A series of post-it notes relating to the plot of ‘The Spectator’ were left stuck to the wall of Bowie’s study in New York. The room was always locked – only Bowie and his personal assistant had a key – so the project remained unknown to anyone else until archivists began cataloguing Bowie’s belongings. The post-it notes will now be available for public view when the David Bowie Centre opens at the V&A East Storehouse in London’s Hackney Wick on September 13, along with a notebook of comments on The Spectator, and the desk where he worked. Bowie’s notes suggest that he was looking to incorporate real characters from early 18th century London into the plot of his musical, such as notorious thief ‘Honest Jack’ Sheppard and his capturer Jonathan Wild – a vigilante who styled himself as the ‘Thief-Taker General’ – as well… Read More →

Pulp announce 30th anniversary reissue of Different Class

Pulp have announced that a 30th anniversary edition of their Britpop high-water mark, Different Class, will be released by Universal Music Recordings on behalf of Island Records on October 24. The album will be available in both quadruple-LP and double-CD format, expanded to include their legendary 1995 Glastonbury Festival set in full – the first time that this performance has been released. Advertisement The LP has been cut at 45rpm, to “make it sound a whole lot better,” as Jarvis Cocker explains. “We were obsessed with the fact that this was our ‘Pop’ album (we had finally achieved some ‘popularity’ when ‘Common People’ was a hit) and, as everyone knows, all pop albums have 12 songs on them: six tracks per side. “Only problem: this took the running time of the record to 53 minutes. We were told this would compromise the audio quality of the vinyl record – but we were more bothered about not compromising the quality of our Pop Dream. Now, 30 years later, we are finally ready for Different Class to be heard in all its glory.” [embedded content] The deluxe 4-LP set is presented in a sturdy slipcase with a comprehensive, 28-page booklet featuring a… Read More →

We’re New Here – Case Oats

“I wanted to write a coming-of-age novel and I made an album instead,” says Casey Walker, fulcrum of Chicago’s lustrous alt.country newcomers Case Oats. Their upcoming debut Last Missouri Exit is certainly steeped in confessional Midwest storytelling. A creative writing graduate, Walker crafts vivid portraits of youthful abandon and struggle, of deadbeat exes (and the exes they went back to), and of the darkness that can engulf her homeland landscapes. “Songs are born out of a short story or a poem,” she says, perched on a stool in a Notting Hill bar, ahead of an in-store performance at Rough Trade West with bandmate Spencer Tweedy. “A lot of times when I sit down to write a song, I have a scene, a character or a piece of dialogue, and that’s what I will come to first.” Advertisement Messing around in a garage-rock band after graduating from Columbia, in 2018 Walker ran into Chicago scene mainstay Tweedy – son of Wilco’s Jeff, and drummer in numerous local acts – and the pair recorded a single track, “Bluff”, at his home studio. Its warm collage of bittersweet relationship memories instantly crystalised the crux of her songwriting. “Having fondness for people who aren’t… Read More →

BDS movement call for boycott of Radiohead’s 2025 tour

The pro-Palestine BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement has called for a boycott of Radiohead’s newly announced 2025 tour. Earlier today (September 3), the band confirmed a run of UK and European live shows for November and December, their first dates in over seven years. They will play multiple dates each in Madrid, Bologna, London’s O2, Copenhagen and Berlin. Fans can apply for tickets by registering on Radiohead’s website here from Friday (September 5). Advertisement Shortly after the announcement, the BDS movement’s social media pages shared a message from the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI), which argued that the band’s “complicit silence” and support of Israeli performers during the “genocide against Palestinians in Gaza” should lead to a boycott of the shows. “Even as Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza reaches its latest, most brutal and depraved phase of induced starvation, Radiohead continues with its complicit silence, while one member repeatedly crosses our picket line, performing a short drive away from a livestreamed genocide, alongside an Israeli artist that entertains genocidal Israeli forces,” an Instagram post read. “Palestinians reiterate our call for the boycott of Radiohead concerts, including its rumoured tour, until the group convincingly… Read More →
