Is "Lose Yourself" Really The Defining Song Of Eminem’s Career?

Is the universal acclaim of “Lose Yourself” representative of Eminem’s artistic peaks?

With eleven albums to his name, many of which spawned multi-platinum and diamond singles, Eminem’s legacy has been soundly etched in music history. A history lined with apparent contradictions. How can a rapper as obscenely vulgar and gruesome as Slim Shady, the self-proclaimed Evil half of “Bad Meets Evil,” have so much crossover appeal? The same man who made “Kill You,” “Kim,” “Stay Wide Awake,” and “Same Song And Dance” secured radio dominance with “Not Afraid,” “Love The Way You Lie,” “The Monster,” and “River.” As much as Slim Shady, Marshall Mathers, and Eminem appear to exist as separate entities, so too do they gravitate toward certain themes and sonic aesthetics. Such versatility has allowed Em to explore a gamut of topics, going so far as to dabble in pop-rap he once decried all those years ago. Such universality served to expand his fanbase well beyond the hip-hop crowd, and many would likely cite “Lose Yourself” as the moment of conversion.

But is it fair to call the diamond-selling, Academy Award-winning single the defining song of Eminem’s career?

It’s certainly his most universally beloved. Fans of all ilks can likely recite at least some of the lyrics, if only the oft-memed “Mom’s Spaghetti.” Parents who once clutched pearls at the madman steering The Marshall Mathers LP and D12’s delightfully rude Devil’s Night found themselves drawn in by Em’s contagious motivation. Were it a fictional story, the release of “Lose Yourself” might have been the inciting incident to a full-fledged redemption arc. He even eschewed many of his favored sonic choices, switching moody minor-key synthesizers and cartoonish Dr. Dre dark bangers with chugging palm-muted guitars, steering close to “rock-rap” in both theory and practice. Given the genre-bending production, it’s no wonder “Lose Yourself” opened the door for new audiences; at the time, even rock stations kept the single in heavy rotation without raising too many eyebrows. Looking back, his eventual partnership with Rick Rubin was hardly surprising, nor was the creative direction they found themselves taking.

As is often the case, universal acclaim tends to arise when hip-hop traditionalism is placed in the backseat. Look no further than the 8 Mile Soundtrack. Eminem offered “8 Mile Road,” a dense, layered, and beautifully rendered exploration of themes presented on “Lose Yourself.” Only it came delivered in a six-minute rap-centric package, the likes of which could never captivate the attention of mainstream America. In many ways, “8 Mile Road” is the superior song, boasting some of the most well-written lyricism of Eminem’s expansive career. It’s even more powerful than its counterpart, exploring both sides of the inspiration/depression dichotomy. And yet it still feels like a cult classic, merely gold in comparison to the Diamond and universally recognized “Lose Yourself.”

That’s not to say “Lose Yourself” lacks in lyricism. Embodying the character of B. Rabbit on wax, Eminem manages to make his own unique story into something widely relatable. At the end of the day, the tale is tried and true. Despite being the biggest artist in the world, Eminem has always painted himself as an underdog. He’s done so in his music, even to this day casting reminders of his arduous come-up. It’s well documented that he was a victim of bullying, seeking refuge in hip-hop and inspiring confidence through his craft. Even when dominating his foes on wax, all but laying waste to the memory of Raymond Benzino, Em actively labeled his opponent a “Bully.” A familiar narrative for himself and millions. Whether in art or life itself, the underdog archetype is an easy one to root for. It’s open to many different interpretations spawning many different antagonistic forces — the tyranny of authority, of abusive partners, of simple circumstance. Not only does “Lose Yourself” do an excellent job of telling a self-contained tale of courage amidst adversity, it does so over an adrenaline-fueled anthem-esque instrumental thick with crossover potential. Having withstood the test of time for nearly two decades, “Lose Yourself” has earned the right to be declared a classic record.

But is it the classic record? On the basis of popularity alone, it’s easy to understand why publications and fans alike have come to respect “Lose Yourself” as Em’s definitive piece of work. And it’s a fair statement to make, despite the inherent implication behind such a conclusion, that bigger is better. Throughout his career, Eminem has given us artistic brilliance that all-too-often goes unrecognized. The aforementioned “8 Mile Road.” The tragedy of “Stan.” The haunting confession that is “Deja Vu.” The painfully self-aware lamentations like “Say Goodbye Hollywood” or its strung out counterpart “Evil Deeds.” None of them stand even remotely close to the legacy of “Lose Yourself,” despite representing some of Eminem’s most compelling authorial moments. But at the end of the day, the Academy Award-winning single will stand sentinel as Eminem’s crowning achievement. Even if the grass is truly greener on the other side of the 8 Mile Road.

Martin Scorcese Sleeping During Eminem’s Oscars Performance Was Hilarious

Eminem's performance wasn't enough to keep Martin Scorcese from dozing off.

The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony took place last night and, much like every year, people were painfully waiting for the big categories to be announced so they could enjoy some much-needed slumber. As with past iterations of the show, last night seemed to drag on incessantly but, thankfully, there were several moments keeping us entertained throughout the evening. From Billie Eilish's meme-worthy reaction to Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig, Parasite's absolute domination, and Eminem's shock performance of "Lose Yourself," there was enough keeping us on our toes to wait for the eventual Best Picture announcement. The crowd appeared to be feeling Em's eighteen-years-late stage show, singing along to his world-famous track but one man legend was notably a little sleepy during the ordeal.

Martin Scorcese, director of The Irishman (of which the harshest critics have ironically referred to it as a three-and-a-half-hour snoozefest), was captured on the hard camera during Eminem's surprise show-out but he did not look to be enjoying the performance one bit. Perhaps just trying to get through the rest of the night, the 77-year-old icon was dozing off in the middle of the high-energy display, clearly not too into Slim Shady.

As noted by Highsnobiety, Scorcese wasn't the only person not totally turned on by the random nature of Eminem's performance; Billie Eilish (who recently critiqued the state of rap music) and Idina Menzel both looked pretty perplexed during the showing.

Eminem & Elton John Reunite At 2020 Academy Awards

Longtime pals Eminem and Elton John reconnect.

It’s not uncommon to see unexpected friendships blossom in hip-hop. Killer Mike and Bernie Sanders. Lil Wayne and Skip Bayless. Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart. Eminem and Elton John, the latter of which made history with a groundbreaking performance of “Stan” at the 2001 Grammy Awards. The pair have since developed a genuine relationship beyond music, despite having yet to officially collaborate on an original song — though there’s still time for that. In any case, Em and Sir Elton recently crossed paths once more, this time at the 2020 Academy Awards.

Following a surprise performance of Em’s Oscar-winning hit “Lose Yourself,” which he never had a chance to perform during his victory in 2003, the rapper linked up with John backstage. He took to Instagram to share a picture of their encounter, honoring his longtime friend with a heartfelt congratulations. “I got to see my Uncle Elton tonight at the Oscars,” writes Slim. “Congrats on your win too, Sir.”

He is, of course, referencing Elton’s Rocketman cut “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” taking home the Best Original Song Oscar. Check out the picture below — given this longstanding friendship, one has to wonder if the pair will ever find time to pen a duet for the ages.

Watch Eminem Perform "Lose Yourself" At 2020 Oscars

Eminem made a surprise appearance.

Sunday night, Eminem returned with his "Lose Yourself" track to deliver on a surprise performance 17 years after the song won the award for Best Original Song for its appearance in Em's 8 Mile film.

The return was in tune with a moment of redemption for the vet who skipped out on the 2003 ceremonies because he didn't believe that he would actually win. That year, presenter Barbra Streisand gave the statue to Luis Resto, who co-wrote the track.

"Look, if you had another shot, another opportunity," he tweeted in connection with the surprise appearance. "Thanks for having me @TheAcademy. Sorry it took me 18 years to get here."

According to reports, the appearance was so top-secret that the Dolby Theatre was placed on lockdown during his rehearsals. If news of his appearance happened to leak, Eminem would have the full option to cancel the appearance altogether. The performance follows up on the rollout for Em's most recent Music To Be Murdered By offering. Similar to his showing at the Academy Awards, Music Te Be Murderer By was a surprise for most. Notably, the 20-song outing featured vocals from Anderson .Paak, then  LAte Juice WRLD, Don Toliver, and Ed Sheeran among a host of tohers.

Nick Cannon Explains Why Eminem Is A Product Of Institutional Racism

Nick Cannon is still not a fan of Eminem… clearly.

In the third diss track that Nick Cannon released against Eminem last year, the comedian uses a sample of a pre-fame song that Marshall Mathers recorded where he raps, “black girls are bitches, black girls are dumb.” The jarring audio did not garner too much of a response with people still defending Eminem, despite the rampant cancel culture present today. Nick Cannon has been the subject of a new video interview with DJ Vlad where he’s been addressing his beef with the Detroit legend and, in the latest clip, he accuses the rapper of being a product of institutionalized racism.

Nick Cannon and DJ Vlad have both heard the same stories about a young Eminem rapping the n-word in his songs, saying such damaging and racist things that Interscope had to pay people off to get rid of the tapes. While that is unproven, Nick Cannon’s opinion of the superstar has not changed a bit. He says that, even though a bunch of alleged tapes exist of Eminem singing very racist things, he could care less because there is already that one “black girls are dumb” line and that’s bad enough. He’s tired of the man’s fans blindly supporting him without taking in that information too.

“You know what the defense was? ‘He already apologized for that’,” said Cannon about Em’s supporters. “Probably the weakest apology ever, ‘I was young and I had a black girlfriend who cheated on me and I was mad.’ … He’s sorry for his individual racism, definitely, I believe he’s sorry for saying the things he said when he was younger. But he’s not sorry for institutional racism, because he’s a product of it.”

Elsewhere in the multi-part interview, Nick Cannon speaks on Orlando Brown’s allegations against him, noting that he believes they were the product of karma from his Eminem feud. Watch below.

Nick Cannon Claims Eminem’s Face Is Getting "Tighter & Tighter" From Botox

Vlad asking the important questions.

It’s unclear whether the beef between Eminem and Nick Cannon still exists but I can assure you that it’s still a topic of discussion on Vlad TV. Nick Cannon’s been digging into the details of the song and some of the allegations he’s made as well as others that Em has made. A few days ago, it was revealed that Nick Cannon really went to Detroit hunting for a wild Em. He was not successful in his venture as Eminem lives elsewhere in the state of Michigan.

Nick Cannon Claims Eminem's Face Is Getting "Tighter & Tighter" From Botox

In the latest clip from Vlad’s series with Nick Cannon, the Wild N Out host discusses the possibilities that Eminem gets botox — an allegation that doesn’t come across too far fetched. According to Nick Cannon, the allegations he made in “Pray For Him” about Eminem’s key to aging “gracefully.”

And viewed in America as a motherfuckin’ drug addict (Bitch)
You’ll never be a legend (Marshall)
Em’, you should really start to stare at who’s in the mirror
Look at all the fuckin’ botox, bitch, I know you’re embarrassed

Nick Cannon busted out laughing immediately after he was asked the question. “Eminem doesn’t look the same as the way he once looked,” Nick said. “The proof is in the pudding. It could be the years of drug use. You know, we don’t want to make fun of none of that. It seems like he’s on the right path but something going on. His shit’s getting tighter and tighter as the years go by.”

Russ Chooses Between Hypothetical Collab With Either Eminem Or Lil Wayne

Who would you rather get into the booth with?

Now that the world has received Russ‘s Shake The Snow Globe, the Atlanta-based artist has been making his way through the press circuit to promote his release. The 27-year-old rapper visited Real 92.3’s Big Boy’s Neighborhood to chat about his career and while there, Big Boy presented him with a choice between Eminem and Lil Wayne.

If Eminem was in Studio A and Lil Wayne was in Studio B which studio—” Big Boy asked before being quickly interrupted by Russ choosing A. “Eminem is why I started rapping,” Russ revealed. The hosts couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought of the Russ and Eminem exchange. “I told him that when I first met him, too… I know he’s heard that 38 million times.”

Elsewhere, Russ revealed the message behind Shake The Snow Globe. “This whole process and this whole album is about growth and self-forgiveness,” Russ said. “I’m very big on self-forgiveness right now because I look back at 23, 24 and it’s like, yeah, I was goin’ hard. I was headhunting and that’s what I should have been doing. I should be going that hard. So, now that I’ve settled in a little bit, I’m still headhunting but it’s just, it’s less in your face about it. Imma still talk my sh*t and everything but it’s like, I’m more secure with my spot in the game.” Check out his clip below.

Nick Cannon On Why 50 Cent Attacked Him On Eminem’s Behalf: "That’s His Boss"

He compares their relationship to that of a master and slave.

Nick Cannon and Eminem have had beef for what feels like forever, but fuel was added to the fire this past year when Em dissed the TV personality on Fat Joe‘s “Lord Above” in December. Nick fired back with multiple diss tracks, which Em promptly ignored, and the former subsequently declared himself the winner of the feud. Nick recently sat down with VladTV to discuss the matter, disclosing that Em’s team did indeed approach him citing that they “don’t want no problems” and insisting that Eminem is absolutely “not going to say anything.” As for 50 Cent coming to Em’s defense with an attack on Nick? “He’s supposed to,” Nick said. “That’s his boss!”

While he thinks that people can “choose to believe” the claim that Fif told Em to ignore Nick’s disses, ultimately, he knows Em asked Fif to do his dirty work for him because Fif is a “slave” to Em, he implies. “Eminem’s Leonardo DiCaprio and 50 Cent‘s Samuel L. Jackson [from Django Unchained],” he declares, referring back to a photo he posted of the Quentin Tarantino film’s master and slave characters as a response to Fif’s compromising photo of him wearing a mankini. He feels that, since Fif “picks fights with everybody,” it was less of a risk for him to go after Nick than for Em to fight his own battles.

At the end of the day, though, Nick is not afraid of anyone, especially not Eminem. “It’s disrespectful to God to be afraid of any man,” he believes. “I’m not scared of him because he can put some words together…Dr. Seuss can rhyme.” Watch the whole clip below:

The Best "Spittin’" Memes Include Bars From Drake, Future, Eminem & More

This latest viral meme is a keeper.

What appears to be the first meme of February is in full force, as folks of the Internet have taken to quoting famous bars and designating who would agree with the sentiments in the lyrics. It appears that the meme was born from a Roddy Ricch lyric, where he spits, "B*tch, don't wear no shoes in my house," on "The Box." On the original post, the user added a screencap from an animation that declares, "This n***a spittin'" and indicated that their grandma was the speaker. The new meme format quickly caught on, as other users took well-known lyrics and noted who would think that the artist was "spittin.'"

Some examples include moths vibing with Kanye's various lightforms in "All of the Lights," Thanos complying to T-Pain's "Snap ya fingers" catchphrase, and turkeys making the same noise as Shakira's tongue trick during the Super Bowl halftime show. One line in particular that has been used in more than one meme is Drake's "Haven't done my taxes, I'm too turnt up" from "Life Is Good," which tax-evaders like Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino and Wesley Snipes are shown relating to.

As far as memes go, it's one of the more versatile formats. The options are endless, and the results are pretty hilarious.

Nick Cannon Blames Eminem Diss Karma For Orlando Brown’s "Ridiculous" Allegations

Nick Cannon speaks about his Eminem diss track and how it led to Orlando Brown’s oral sex claim.

At the height of the most recent continuation of the feud between Nick Cannon and Eminem, accusations were uttered by the comedian and his crew that there exists a video of Eminem engaging in gay sex acts in his chauffeured vehicle. “I heard your chauffeur got a video of you suckin’ a cock/You paid him off, then laid him off, now who really the opp?” raps Cannon on his initial record against Em. Weeks later, former Disney Channel star Orlando Brown made similar allegations against the comedian himself, claiming that Cannon once performed oral sex on him while wearing women’s clothing. According to Nick, the energy he exuded during his battle against Eminem is the exact cause of Orlando Brown’s outburst, blaming the situation on karma.

“It’s definitely something I’ve heard, but you know it’s karma like a motherfucker,” says the television and radio host about the video he referenced in “The Invitation.” “First of all, there is that rumor out there that he’s very promiscuous with his sexuality. […] I have no substantial evidence that Eminem has [done this other than through word of mouth.] Really, the rhyme scheme is what I thought was dope. So, Orlando Brown comes up with just these ridiculous accusations towards me. It’s like, ‘oh, karma is a motherfucker.'”

Nick Cannon admits that he thinks Eminem handled the disses very well, referencing their back-and-forth on Twitter. Watch the video below to see Nick speak on the issue with Em and Orlando.

Nick Cannon Details Trying To Hunt Eminem Down In Detroit Over Mariah Comments

Nick Cannon says he went to Detroit in search of Eminem.

The feud between Nick Cannon and Eminem continues over a decade after it initially began. The talk show host and the rapper have fired shots at each other over Mariah Carey since the late 2000s and things picked back up in December when Em fired shots on Fat Joe‘s “Lord Above.” Nick Cannon came to the defense of his baby mother and released several diss songs towards Em.

In the most recent segment with DJ Vlad, Nick Cannon revealed that he was really on the hunt for Eminem. On “Lord Above,” Eminem rapped, “Tried to tell him this chick’s a nutjob ‘fore he got his jewels clipped/ Almost got my caboose kicked.” Turns out, that was actually true. “I went lookin’ for that mothafucka,” Nick said about his trip to Detroit. It was the weekend of the BET Awards and Nick and Mariah were both managed by Chris Lighty, who was also managing 50 Cent, at the time. Eminem doesn’t actually live in Detroit but in the state of Michigan so Nick failed in his efforts.

Nick also explained that Eminem was once working with Emanual Steward for an upcoming boxing movie. He said that at one point, he ran into Steward who said Em’s ready to fight him in the boxing ring.

Lil Wayne Speaks On More Than Holding His Own Against Eminem

There is always a risk that when you get on a track with Eminem, you get shown up. (Just ask JAY-Z.) Lil Wayne has been on the same cut as Shady a few times and he believes he more than held his own.

"I did a few joints with Em, he's my man," Wayne said in his new Drink Champs interview. "I can humbly say I expected that. When you get on that joint it's like a championship game, and you win it, and they ask you how does it feel. I came in with my game plan and I expected my game plan to work. When you send a song to Em you attack it like that, like nah you not going to do me like this. Either we gonna right here with it, and we're going to make a beautiful great song, but you ain't gon' do me that...I just made sure that he didn't body me, cause that boy is a monster."

Eminem and Wayne both just dropped albums.  Weezy Funeral and Shady Music To Be Murdered By.

While neither featured on the other's project, Wayne did shout out Em on his new track "Piano Trap."

"I’m workin’ my plans, ingenuous
I’m talkin’ ’bout mags and millions
Mags and millions, man, ask Eminem," Wayne raps.

Lil Wayne Recalls Leaving Jay-Z Shook & Refusing To Let Eminem Body Him On Wax

Lil Wayne has stories for days.

Lil Wayne's Funeral has arrived, and with it comes an extensive new episode of REVOLT's DRINK CHAMPS. We've already highlighted a few moments for your enjoyment -- including Lil Wayne vowing to decapitate track on tracks till the end of time-- but given the runtime and sheer amount of content packed into the episode, there's still plenty of gems to unpack.

Around the seventeen minute mark, N.O.R.E pulls out an exclusive quote from Jay-Z, admitting that Wayne's "Show Me What U Got" freestyle left him reevaluating his own position in the game. "When he rapped on 'Show Me What U Got,' I had to take a long walk and look at myself in the mirror, and I said 'are you sure you still got this?'" reads N.O.R.E. Wayne laughs, clearly honored by the praise. "Did he ever tell you this?" asks N.O.R.E. Wayne nods, confirming that Jay did in fact praise the freestyle. "He let me know 'you comin' for me boy!' It's just a privilege, I can't get on that and play with it, man." His giddiness emerges in the following moments. "You don't understand, I'ma about to walk out of here like the Packers won!" he laughs.

Lil Wayne Recalls Leaving Jay-Z Shook & Refusing To Let Eminem Body Him On Wax

"I've never been paid for none of my mixtapes," confesses Wayne. "I refuse. It's always been an outlet for me to get an outlet for the music I wanted. Being in Hot Boys was perfect, but I looked at it like school. That's a test, I'ma go pass the test when I get to that studio. My verse gon' be the hardest. And with Baby, it was always about who he wanted to go first...That always let us know he liked your verse the most. Now go back and listen to how I start off on all them songs." He laughs, his competitive spirit alive and well.

He also opens up about working with Eminem, and Nore points out that Weezy is among the few that Em didn't body. "I did a few joints with Em, that's my man," says Wayne. "I can humbly say I expected that. When you get on that joint its like a championship game, and you win it, and they ask you how does it feel. I came in with my game plan and I expected my game plan to work. When you send a song to Em you attack it like that, like naaah you not going to do me like this. Either we gon' be right here with it, and we're going to make a beautiful great song, but you ain't gon' do me that...I just made sure that he didn't body me, cause that boy is a monster."

Despite having gone through a few rocky moments in recent years, it's clear that Lil Wayne still owes a lot to the teachings of Birdman. After N.O.R.E and EFN praise Weezy's ability to put ego aside and let his Young Money artists thrive, Wayne explains that it wouldn't have been possible without Birdman's influence. "I let them know how much confidence I have in [them]," he says. "You don't none of my credentials, none of my accolades, ya'll just need ya'll. That instills so much confidence in them, and they are where they are today because of it...People I set in the room and said to they face, you a muthafucka and once you come out they gon' understand that you are who you are. You're gone from there and I'll watch you fly."

"I would have to say that I learned a lot of that from Baby," admits Wayne. "We from the streets, and we were looking at the same person with the accolades of his street. We knew who Baby was, and he was a millionaire from the streets. In New Orleans, way before rap, before Cash Money, that name held weight...He would strip himself of all that, and be like you n***as. I believe in ya'll."

Roddy Ricch To Dethrone Eminem On Next Week’s Chart: Report

Roddy Ricch is expected to reclaim the top spot on the Billboard 200.

Roddy Ricch is having himself a moment in 2020. Starting off the new decade with a ferocious bang, the Compton rapper turned the world upside down by absolutely dominating the charts and causing pop stars to reconsider their promotional strategies. In order to even have a chance against Ricch, Justin Bieber needed to inform his fans on how to cheat the streaming algorithm. The following week, Selena Gomez begged her fans to buy out their local department stores to boost her numbers. While the latter's strategy actually worked, Ricch's album has proven to have more longevity, creeping back up to the top spot in next week's chart projections.

Unless things drastically change over the weekend, Ricch is nearing another week at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart, dethroning Eminem and adding another seven days to his historic reign. The rapper has officially spent the most time at the pole position of the Billboard Hot 100 this year with "The Box" spending much of this month at the No. 1 spot. In addition, he is also looking set to continue his album growth with another near-100K units moved this week while Eminem is expected to peak at the 85K mark this week. Whether you attribute his success to the current TikTok buzz of his songs "The Box" and "High Fashion" or just to the fact that he's been making some damn good music, it's nice to see a young king win like this.

Which album did you enjoy more? Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial or Music To Be Murdered By?

Eminem Praises 50 Cent At Walk Of Fame Ceremony: "This Guy Is F*cking Relentless"

Eminem says it’s much nicer to be 50 Cent’s friend than his enemy.

Eminem and 50 Cent once formed a one-two punch that dominated hip-hop in the early days of this century. The two would go on to become some of the most legendary figures to ever grace a stage. News broke earlier today that, due to his extraordinary accomplishments in music, television and film, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson would be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. A lifelong dream for many, Jackson’s star will be placed near the corner of Hollywood and Vine, a high-traffic area. The ceremony awarding 50 Cent for his latest achievement is underway and organizers appropriately invited Dr. Dre and Eminem to speak about their bonds with the rapper.

Acting as business partners, Eminem noted that his relationship with 50 Cent goes much further than that. “I just wanna say man, I’m here today because this is not only a business partner to me, it’s one of the best friends I’ve ever known in the world,” said Em about Fif. “I would say that it’s much more fun to be his friend than it is to be his enemy because this guy is fucking relentless. And he won’t stop. And the same way that he’s relentless in his battles, he’s also relentless in his business. He’s an artist, an entrepreneur, an actor, a director, a producer… he can juggle, he’s great at Scrabble. He pretty much does it all. And he’s also helped me through a lot of hard times in my own life and he’s always been there when I needed him. So 50, congrats on your star, man.”

There could not be a candidate more deserving than 50 Cent. Congratulations to the legendary Queens rapper!

Lord Jamar Says Eminem Wearing Will Smith Mask Is "Kinda Like A Blackface"

DJ Vlad asks, Lord Jamar answers, and the feud with Eminem continues.

Lord Jamar and Eminem won't make peace in the foreseeable future, or at least that's how it seems. In recent times, Lord Jamar's expressed his disdain for Eminem, and vice versa, on numerous occasions and now, it just seems like a running joke. It goes -- DJ Vlad interviews Lord Jamar, Lord Jamar shares his unadulterated thoughts on Eminem, and Eminem then lashes out on Lord Jamar on wax.

After Eminem fired shots on "I Will," Lord Jamar continued to fire back in interviews. In his most recent sit-down with Vlad, Lord Jamar discussed the photo of Eminem wearing a mask of Will Smith. Lord Jamar shared a photo on his Instagram page last year of Eminem wearing a mask of Will Smith and suggested that it's "kinda like a blackface."

"It's a mockery of black people, like a white dude wearing any kind of black mask is problematic and should be explained," he began. "I just wanna know what the whole context was. Could it be explained?'"

After Vlad said that he personally wouldn't do it, Lord Jamar explained, "I know at the time a lot people in Hip Hop -- black people -- might have looked at Will Smith as kinda corny and straight-laced but that's for us to do. You can't cross the line that maybe one of us could have done. But you as a white guy can't do that."

He continued to explain that the photo in question wasn't his first time mocking the Black community, pointing out to the leaked demo when Em was 16-years-old describing Black women as "bad" in comparison to white girls. "You gotta put all of that sht into context when you talk about this guy... it wasn't something that was easily found on the Internet," he said.

Eminem’s "Music To Be Murdered By" Tops The Billboard Charts For His 10th Number One Album

Eminem's "Music To Be Murdered By" is his tenth number one album.

When Eminem released Revival in 2017, his fans and critics alike were wary of the rapper's relevance to today's broad musical climate. The following year, the Detroit-native responded to criticism of the record with the release of Kamikaze (2018) and proved to the masses that his pen was just as prominent as it ever was. Now, one week following the drop of his surprise LP, Music To Be Murdered By (2020), Billboard has revealed that Eminem's latest musical offering has officially debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 200 Albums Chart.

As of today (Jan. 26), the album has accumulated an equivalent amount of 279,000 albums sales, including a total of 117,000 traditional album sales. All of the tracks included on the album have garnered a total of 217.6 million on-demand streams thus far. This major accomplishment has made Music To Be Murdered By Eminem's tenth consecutive number one album passing Kanye West who tied the "Godzilla" rapper at nine number one albums last year with the release of his album, Jesus is King (2019)

Eminem and Jay Z (14) are the only two hip-hop artists in existence who have more than ten albums to reach the number one spot on the Billboard charts.

Without announcing a release date for his album or offering ticket bundle packages for his latest release, Eminem has proven that he still one of the most dominant forces in all of music. With Em recently dedicating this album to Juice WRLD, the success of his latest body of work is well-deserved.

Machine Gun Kelly Gets At Eminem For Revealing His Grindr Photo

Yesterday, Eminem had some fun with the Dolly Parton challenge -- which has participants post their LinkedIn/Facebook/Instagram/Tinder photos like Dolly first did -- by changing Tinder to its gay counterpart Grindr.

Eminem's challenger turned whipping boy Machine Gun Kelly didn't appreciate Shady's gay troll.  So he tweeted (then deleted) his objection.

“50 year old artists tryna be relevant to the youth by posting trending meme’s is something i never thought i’d see #2020," he typed.

Like Trippie Redd, MGK said Em was 50 when he's actually 47.  However, we don't think that inaccuracy is why he deleted his Tweet.

For his part, Eminem expressed his latest opinion of MGK on his Music To Be Murdered By track "Unaccommodating".

But when they ask me is the war finished with MGK? Of course it is
I cleansed him of his mortal sins, I'm God and the Lord forgives even the devil worshippers
I'm moving on but you know your scruples are gone when you're born with Lucifer's horns
And you're from the school of Notorious, Puba, Cube and The Poor Righteous Teachers tutored my students
Showed them all the blueprint and formula
But it seems like the more they studied my music, the more they remind me of eyeballs
I'm watching my pupils get cornier

Eminem Dedicates "Music To Be Murdered By" To Juice WRLD

The dedication is listed on newly-surfaced liners.

Notably, Juice WRLD's vocals found a place on Eminem's newest Music To Be Murdered By album where he makes his appearance on "Godzilla" as he delivers on the track's chorus.  Now as fans have begun to enjoy physical copies of Shady's latest, they have shared new copies of the CD's liner notes that show that the album is dedicated to Juice WRLD along with CeeAaqil Allah Barnes, Eminem's late bodyguard.

The album garnered its fair share of criticism, considering the subject that especially came to light with a line with Em uttered in reference to the 2017 Manchester bombing at an Ariana Grande concert.

"This album was not made for the squeamish," Eminem would reply in response to the backlash. "If you are easily offended or unnerved at the screams of bloody murder, this may not be the collection for you. Certain selections have been designed to shock the conscience, which may cause positive action. Unfortunately, darkness has truly fallen upon us [...] So you see, murder in this instance isn’t always literal, nor pleasant. These bars are only meant for the sharpest of knives in the drawers. For the victims of this album, may you rest peacefully. For the rest of you, please listen more closely next time. Goodnight! With deepest sympathy, Eminem."

Machine Gun Kelly Clowns Eminem For Doing Dolly Parton Challenge

MGK pokes fun at Em's age again.

Eminem namedropping Machine Gun Kelly on his 2018 album, Kamikaze, ended up fuelling a beef between the two of them. On Em's latest surprise release, Music To Be Murdered By, he proclaims that this beef is over. On "Unaccommodating", he raps: "But when they ask me is the war finished with MGK? Of course it is / Cleansed him of his mortal sins, I'm God / I'm the Lord, forgives even the devil worshippers."

While Em wishes to place this spat in the past, MGK still seems to harbour some resentment against the Detroit emcee. Shortly after MTBMB was shared with the world, MGK sent some not-so-subtle shots in Shady's direction. “mad af I just stepped out a loud room to hear this bullshit,” he tweeted. “he’s been rich and mad for 20 years straight.”

Now, MGK is clowning his elder enemy once again. The Dolly Parton Challenge is the latest viral phenomenon and Eminem decided to participate in it. The challenge entails posting four photos of yourself that capture the varying online personas you project on social media platforms. Em is not the most active on Instagram, but he contributed his own post to the trend. In a since-deleted tweet, MGK interprets Em's post as an attempt to connect with the youth. “50 year old artists tryna be relevant to the youth by posting trending meme’s is something i never thought i’d see #2020," he wrote.

Ebro Doubles Down On Eminem Stance: "He’s Had To Prove Himself Over And Over"

Ebro stands by his comments about Eminem.

Following the surprise release of Eminem's album, Music To Be Murdered By, last Friday, veteran radio host, Ebro Darden, took to Twitter this week to share his loaded opinion on the artist's position within the hip hop community.

"Eminem treats Rap how Black folks have had to treat life... be 5x better, work 5x harder than everyone and still not necessarily get respect," Ebro wrote. This comparison quickly sparked a heated debate, and Ebro followed up his initial claim with, "You can absolutely hate Eminem musically. What you cannot say as a HipHop fan is that is a wack rapper..."

He then clarifies what he means, insisting that while Em may be successful, he still has to work harder to gain respect in the hip hop community. "People confuse success and respect," he tweeted, followed by, "Eminem’s success comes from him being white, he’s even said it. Lack of respect also comes from him being white. The disdain for him comes from him being successful @ something Black people own. His love for the culture is why he worked so hard to be great and get respect."

Ebro took the argument over to his show, Ebro in the Morning, on Friday, elaborating on his point about conflating success with respect. "There are people who will fix their lips to say that Eminem is a wack rapper. You may not what he talks about, you may not like the sound of his voice, you may not like his music, which I would debate is probably because he's white and it's racial anyway, but let's assume that it's not," he said. "His skill set as a rapper? If he is privileged—and he is—the fact that he cares this much about being great in hip-hop and being respected? Yo, the entire album that he just put out: shouting out the greats, paying homage, flexing his rap skills."

"The disdain that people have for Eminem is mostly because he's white...Eminem cares so much about hip hop, he put out a letter yesterday," he continued, referring to Em's message to fans in which he clarified the intentions of the album and warned them not to misinterpret the project. Ebro goes on to emphasize why his initial comparison makes sense. "Eminem operates in a space that is dominated by black folks. He's had to pay his dues, be made fun of, be second guessed. That's just how it works. Black folks have had to do that every single day. And he's also had to prove himself over and over and over again. You know what black folks still have to do right now in America? We still have to prove ourselves all the time."

While Ebro's co-host, Peter Rosenberg, agrees with parts of Ebro's argument, he illustrates the key difference between Eminem's so-called struggle within hip-hop and black people's struggle just to exist. "The difference is when you're a white person in hip-hop, you're opting in. Black people have to do that every day to live life in America. No option," he pointed out. "I could complain to you about the breaks I don't think I get and the benefits of the doubt I don't get. But guess what? I'm opting to chose with my privilege to be involved in hip-hop, so I can't sit here and cry when people go, 'Shut up, Rosenberg, you don't know what you're talking about.' So the same with Eminem, but he's not crying about it...What makes Eminem great is that he didn't want that, he wanted the respect from black culture. That's what Eminem cared about. That's what makes him so iconically great: He cares about what matters."

Eminem’s "Godzilla" Marks Juice WRLD’s First #1 Single In The UK

Eminem & Juice WRLD’s collabs marks a momentous milestone for both artists.

Just when you thought he was on another hiatus, Eminemcame through swinging a week ago with the release of Music To Be Murdered By. The album was met with mixed reception, although it’s still the topic of conversation a week later. Despite this, it’s gaining a ton of traction, not only in North America but across the world as well.

Music To Be Murdered By has hit a monumental milestone for both Eminem and Juice WRLD. The project debuted at the top of the UK albums charts and “Godzilla,” Juice WRLD’s posthumous feature on Em’s album, has debuted at the top of the U.K. songs chart. The song hasn’t been chosen as the single but clearly, fans have been drawn to this song the most. Per Forbes, “Godzilla” marks Juice WRLD’s first number-one single in the UK as well as the first release since his death. Previously, Juice WRLD hit the top 10 with “Lucid Dreams.”

“Godzilla” also marked another significant moment in Em’s career as well. The rapper set a brand new record after reportedly rapping 229 words in 30 seconds. Eminem broke his own record previously set with the single, “Rap God.”

Meanwhile, Eminem’s album is expected to top the Billboard 200 this week with his new project. Industry forecasters say he’s projected to sell 280K in the first week which will mark his 10th consecutive chart-topper.

Eminem Uses Dolly Parton Meme To "Reveal" His Grindr Profile Photo

Eminem joked about how different he is on each social media platform.

There are unwritten rules pertaining to how we should present ourselves in different forums of the internet. On Twitter, you can generally be your unfiltered self, posting whatever the hell comes to your mind because, well, that's what happens over there. On Facebook, you've got to be a little more in control of your thoughts... After all, your crazy uncle is reading every word you write. The meme format taking over the world right now derives from 74-year-old Dolly Parton, who shared a collage of profile pictures she uses for the different platforms. People are quickly submitting their own entries and Eminem, who just released his surprise album Music To Be Murdered By, decided to throw his name in the hat

"Do I do this right?" asked Marshall Mathers in his caption, sharing a list of pictures he deems appropriate for LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and more. For LinkedIn, he wears a professional get-up, adjusting his tie and looking very employable. Facebook shows a more recent shot of the rapper giving a smouldering look to the camera, feeling himself and his beard line-up. On Instagram, the legendary Detroit native feels he can go a little crazy, posting an image of him as Santa Claus on a reindeer. The bottom right corner of his meme shows what he would use as his Grindr profile pic, joking that he has an account on the gay dating app. As you would expect, it's that iconic firecracker shot.

Yes, Marshall. You did do this right. However, your manager is probably on his way to take your phone away for the day.

Lord Jamar Blasts Eminem: "You Filthy Piece Of Trailer Park Sh*t"

The Lord Jamar remix of “Stepdad” is coming soon.

Following the release of Eminem‘s Music To Be Murdered By, which featured some bars aimed at his old pal Lord Jamar, it seemed inevitable that the Godcast host would have something to say. Naturally, he linked up with VladTV for another interview and it didn’t take long for Jamar’s animosity to reach a boiling point.

“He made a whole song about me,” says Jamar. “Stepdad! The whole song ‘Stepdad!'” Vlad appears confused, and Jamar sings the chorus for his benefit. “‘Ain’t he talking about me? No!? I thought ‘Stepdad’ is the one he’s talking about me. Which song are you talking about? Oh the one where he had a little verse about me? Nah, that ain’t as good as the ‘Stepdad!’ ‘Stepdad’ is banging! That shit rocks! That’s a whole song about me!”

After clarifying that the song in question is “I Will,” Jamar admits to having heard it. “I thought ‘Stepdad’ was much better,” continues Jamar, doubling down on the Eminem lyric impressions before cycling back to “I Will.” “It was almost Slaughterhouse, but no Joe so it falls short,” reasons Jamar. “I know what he said! Don’t read his lyrics for him. I know what this bitch-ass said. And? And what? I’m still unscathed! Guess what, muthafuckas still ain’t listening to that in the hood…They gotta read about it, because again my point is proven, nobody listens to your fuckin’ shit!”

“I figured out that I live rent-free in Eminem’s fuckin brain,” he continues. “I got squatters rights in that bitch. And might I say, it’s fuckin’ filthy in there. Okay? He talks about yeah, I’d be cleaning the sinks for Rakim. Yeah, we clean our fucking houses you filthy piece of trailer park shit. We clean our fucking houses. Cleanliness is next to godliness. I’d be glad to clean the house of hip-hop’s sink. Your trailer park is filthy. But I’m in here chilling — you’ll have to call the ‘Marshalls’ to get me out.”

Can we expect a Lord Jamar remix of “Stepdad” anytime soon? Check out his spirited rendition below, and read our Music To Be Murdered By review right here.

Eminem May Have Stole New Album Concept & Release Date, UK Rapper Claims

Eminem’s new album continues to face criticism and backlash in the UK.

On Friday, Eminem came through with a brand new album titled, Music To Be Murdered By. Like Kamikazethere wasn’t much of a heads-up before the release and by the time people were checking their phones when they woke up, Music To Be Murdered By was already trending. Although Em’s faced controversy over a few bars and the subject matter on the album, it appears that he’s facing allegations of biting a Scottish rapper.

According to The Evening Telegraph, Dundee, Scotland rapper Zee The Dungeounous, is making allegations that Eminem bit his concept and release date for Music To Be Murdered By. Zee claims Eminem jacked the title of his song “Music To Be Murdered By” which also included snippets from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 record of the same name. On top of that, Zee says Em’s album dropped on the five-year anniversary of his song.

“When I heard the Hitchcock samples, the same title and release date I did start to get a little freaked out,” Zee said.“He is one of my idols and it could well be a coincidence but you do hear stories of richer artists with louder fan bases getting away with that sort of thing.”

What drives his theory home, though, is the fact that he previously toured with Eminem and D-12 and worked with Bizarre in 2008 after meeting in Glasgow.

“I had a guest feature from Bizarre on my album, who I met after a concert in Glasgow in 2008, which I released two years before Music to be Murdered By which was called Murder Zee Wrote,” he continued. “People started contacting me thinking about the similarities between the works and that’s what got me thinking. We have our connections to D12 and it doesn’t put it too far out of the realm of possibility that Eminem, through Bizarre, heard my track, dug for the sample I used, and took the concept.”

Ebro’s Take On Eminem Sparks A Heated Debate

Ebro speaks his mind.

In the review of Music To Be Murdered ByI mentioned that the project was destined to divide. Such has become true for Eminem in general, and artist whose legacy has been continuously besieged by detractors. While some may only be mobilizing to combat the fury of the Stans, it's become expected to see heated discourse following the release of any new Eminem music. Those in the media often find themselves embroiled in, sometimes even sparking these debates to begin with. Look no further than Ebro, who took to Twitter to offer his own take on Eminem's place in hip-hop culture.

Ebro's Take On Eminem Sparks A Heated Debate

Dave J Hogan/Getty Images

As a longstanding hip-hop authority, Ebro's words hold weight. It's no wonder his take on Eminem is particularly strong, leaving much to unpack beyond a surface level. "Eminem’s success comes from him being white, he’s even said it," claims Ebro, knowing exactly what sort of can of worms he's opening. "Lack of respect also comes from him being white. The disdain for him comes from him being successful @ something Black people own. His love for the culture is why he worked so hard to be great and get respect."

It didn't take long for the debate to spark and Ebro seized the opportunity to double down. "Eminem treats Rap how Black folks have had to treat life," he continues. "Be 5x better, work 5x harder than everyone and still not necessarily get respect." The tweets found many people chiming with agreement while others took issue with Ebro's angle. Accusations of "hater" were flung willy-nilly, though it should be noted that his infamous top ten list had Eminem at number ten. High praise to be sure, though his opinion on "Rap God" seems to suggest a distaste for Em's more recent musical output.

How do you feel about Ebro's takes on Eminem's respect, success, and musicality?

Eminem Speaks On "Music To Be Murdered By" Criticism: "May You Rest Peacefully"

Eminem speaks on his new album and how he means for it to be consumed.

The days of heading to the store, buying the latest music releases and reading the CD liner notes are long gone. Now, we receive that sort of content social media. Even an artist like Eminem, who has stuck around for decades, is adapting to the times, realizing that only a select number of people will actually purchase a physical copy of his new surprise album Music To Be Murdered By. The majority of folks will be consuming it on their designated streaming service. In order to communicate the message he intended to share with his fans regarding the record, Em shared a note on Instagram, issuing a warning for anybody who may have gotten the wrong idea from his latest musical content.

“In today’s wonderful world murder has become so commonplace that we are a society obsessed and fascinated by it. I thought why not make a sport of it, and murder over beats?” wrote Eminem, addressing his loyal audience. “So before you jump the gun, please allow me to explain. This album was not made for the squeamish. If you are easily offended or unnerved at the screams of bloody murder, this may not be the collection for you. Certain selections have been designed to shock the conscience, which may cause positive action. Unfortunately, darkness has truly fallen upon us.”

In one of the videos released for MTBMB, Eminem recreates the Las Vegas mass shooting from a few years ago. He also mentions the Manchester attack at an Ariana Grande concert. The rapper continued, “So you see, murder in this instance isn’t always literal, nor pleasant. These bars are only meant for the sharpest knives in the drawer. For the victims of this album, may you rest peacefully. For the rest of you, please listen more closely next time.”

Trippie Redd Reacts To Being Name-dropped On Eminem’s "Music To Be Murdered By"

Trippie is unimpressed and uninterested.

Eminem has always stirred the pot by name-dropping fellow celebrities in his music. Last Friday, he surprise-released his new albumMusic To Be Murdered By, and while some might consider it to be more tame than his previous releases, there are still moments that possess shock value. On “Marsh”, Shady gets ears to perk up when he name-drops Trippie Redd. While he doesn’t seem to send any serious shots, he associates the 20-year-old rapper with drug use. “Then he said kill MCs/Trippie Redd, with pills and lean/Sipping meds in the limousine/Getting head, guillotine,” he raps.

Trippie has now responded to this mention, but he is not up in arms over it. In a black-screen IG story, he wrote: “N****s be 50 beefing wit a 15yr old.” While Eminem name-drops have resulted in heated beefs in the past,  Trippie shows no interest in entering that territory.

Trippie Redd Reacts To Being Name-dropped On Eminem's "Music To Be Murdered By"

The feud between Eminem and Machine Gun Kelly escalated in 2018, but after hearing that he is referenced twice on Music To Be Murdered By (“Unaccommodating”, “Yah Yah”), MGK seemed as unconcerned as Trippie. He tweeted, “mad af I just stepped out a loud room to hear this bullshit,” and then clarified what bullshit he was referring to with a follow-up tweet: “he’s been rich and mad for 20 years straight”.

Em’s new album has also incited reactions from Lord JamarJoe Budden and the mayor of Manchester

Eminem Breaks World Record With Juice WRLD Collab "Godzilla": Report

Eminem just beat his own record.

We all know that Eminem, the self-proclaimed Rap God, can spit extraordinarily quickly. He's shown off his rapid-fire ability throughout his career, specializing in quick-paced bars and memorable punchlines, even earning himself a Guinness World Record for the fastest rap song ever with "Rap God." If you thought the Detroit legend was washed, you clearly were incorrect because, after last week, we're convinced that Eminem still has the energy for another run at the top. With Music To Be Murdered By, Slim Shady is fixing to sit at the top of the Billboard 200 next week but that's not the only accomplishment he will likely enjoy.

As initially posted by an Eminem fan site and picked up by DatPiff and HipHopLately, it has been reported that Eminem officially broke his own record, replacing "Rap God" with "Godzilla" and penning another fast-paced masterpiece. The sweetest part about this all is that the late Juice WRLD, who is featured on the hook, will live on forever in the Book of World Records. Spitting a total of 229 words in 30 seconds, Eminem did enough in his third verse to replace himself at the top. If you're unsure of just how fast that is, he was rapping 7.6 words per second. If that ain't impressive, I don't know what is.

Congratulations to Eminem on this achievement. Do you think he'll find a way to beat himself on the next album?

Eminem’s "Music To Be Murdered By" Is Destined To Divide

Death by a thousand bars.

On the opening track of Music To Be Murdered By, Eminem addresses one of hip-hop’s conundrums. That of longevity. It’s album number eleven and many words have been written. Words written by Eminem himself, scrawled on a notebook page in meticulous fashion. Words penned by music journalists left unpacking his messages and analyzing his place within the greater cultural context. Words packed with vitriol over his latest darkly comedic reference to whatever tragedy happens to fit the rhyme scheme. Enough words to fill several tomes in fact. In that sense: Slim Shady will always be one of the music industry’s most evocative stars. Even though many have openly turned their back, voicing their displeasure with words, words, words.

It’s appropriate. Given Eminem’s own mastery of the English language and all, a quality he has expressed great pride in. On his latest, Em might very well be operating at his linguistic best. The flows he concocts on songs like “Godzilla,” “I Will,” or “Unaccomodating” are some of the most impressive from the standpoint of pure craftsmanship. Not to mention his ability to pull double, nay triple entendres out of thin air; don’t even ask him how. From a–double-edged sword though his phrase has become– technical standpoint, Eminem has transcended from man to supercomputer. As preceding album Kamikaze made clear, Eminem has allowed his own “Rap God” dominance to be among his primary sources for thematic inspiration.

Upon first listening to Music To Be Murdered By, shades of two of Eminem’s more recent albums were immediately evoked. Where Relapse played out like a love letter to the horror genre this one seeks inspiration in suspense. Alfred Hitchock opens an eerie instrumental from the reunited Dr. Dre and Dawaun Parker but this time the stage directions read different. In lieu of conjuring nightmarish accent-laden snuff fantasies, Eminem begins in a reflective state. The venomous “Premonition” is a slow burn lamentation stemming from the disconnect between his fans and his critics, who for all intents and purposes have become antagonistic forces. “But Rolling Stone stars, I get two and a half outta five and I’ll laugh out loud,” he raps, drawing a parallel with LL Cool J. “Cause that’s what they gave BAD back in the day / which actually made me not feel as bad now, ’cause If it happened to James it could happen to Shady.”

While many praised Eminem’s willingness to work with outside producers like Tay Keith & Ronny J, there’s irreplicable magic when he unites with Dr. Dre. Seemingly the only producer capable of capturing the perfect dark banger, Dre emerged from his overseer’s role to provide four instrumentals to Slim’s cause. Sonically is where the Relapse comparisons end. In a surprising turn Music To Be Murdered By shares many similarities with Revival. Albeit, a Revival blessed by better execution and a renewed sense of confidence. The journey plays out in similar fashion: a healthy mix of bar-heavy tracks, social commentary, and moments of romantic introspection. Only this time he’s rapping like he did on Kamikaze, albeit grounded by Revival’s focused concepts. The combination makes for a slew of compelling moments, many of which arrive during the project’s second half.

Where the first half feels somewhat inconsistent– barring a seamless transition from “Premonition” to the Young M.A. assisted “Unaccomodating–the second half is home to some of Em’s best music in years. What begins as another love song on “Never Love Again” slowly unfolds into a layered and nuanced take on addiction, rendered brilliantly by Em’s metaphorical linguistics and Dre’s eerie descent into synthesizer-induced madness. “Little Engine” picks up where Revival’s “Offended” left off, with Eminem giving into his zaniest urges over infectiously arranged percussion. Arguable highlight “Lock It Up” finds two Aftermath alumni taking to another blessing from the Doc as Anderson .Paak and Slim Shady float over the ghostly haze. “Now my Shady babies are all stillborns, meaning abortions that live cause they were still born,” spits Em, his macabre imagery on point. “I can heal ’em with Neosporin.”

Though perhaps inadvertently sowing discord within the Slaughterhouse camp, the ends justified the means on the penultimate “I Will.” Facing a Buddenless void Em fits the fourth spot admirably, delivering the most razor-sharp and self-assured verse on the album. Over a beat laced by both himself and old pal Luis Resto, Slim unleashes scheme after scheme while lining the purist-friendly track with cleverly rendered references to hip-hop legends. A similar spirit exists on “Yah Yah,” itself bolstered by the presence of Black Thought, Royce Da 5’9” (who also lands a few production credits), and Q-Tip. Sadly the peaks are counterweighted by a handful of valleys not entirely glaring in execution but jarring given the Hitchcockian motif. For that reason the impact of Music To Be Murdered By can feel slightly diluted, especially when he’s retreading familiar ground; it’s unlikely that any murders will occur whilst the dulcet tones of Skylar Gray soar anthemesque. Nor over the hazy strip-club bender “Those Kinda Nights,” a playful reflection of “the D12 days” that raises an important question: might this song have been more effective had Biz, Kuniva, Swifty, and Denaun came through for old times sake?

For better or worse the dad-joke bars remain a recurring staple. Though the man is a dad and reserves the right to joke accordingly many have grown weary of puns as a general rule. Chalk it up to personal taste; those who have been with Eminem through “Big Weenie” might be more forgiving in that department than those who discovered him through a Don Toliver collaboration. Select few though they may be. For longtime fans, Music To Be Murdered By is triumphant at times, a validation of artistic vision where one wasn’t needed to begin with. For casual listeners or active dislikers it might harbor the same criticisms that have been voiced about previous releases: pacing, tone, eyebrow-raising lyricism. Where one might wince at Em’s insane verbal dexterity on the crowd-pleasing Juice WRLD banger “Godzilla,” another may be rendered awestruck. That crucial distinction between “he’s a legend” and “he’s a legend but” will remain.

Swae Lee Declares Eminem To Be A Legend

Swae Lee pays homage to a hip-hop icon.

In only a few years, Swae Lee has established himself as one of the game's strongest melodists. Between his work with Rae Sremmurd and his own solo output, the work speaks for itself. The quality was not lost on Eminem, who came through to give Swae Lee a shoutout on his recent album Music To Be Murdered By.

Swae Lee Declares Eminem To Be A Legend

Christopher Polk/Getty Images

In the climactic bars of intro track "The Premonition," Em sets up a scheme about how his fans have been violently pulling him in various directions. "I need to get me some Dre beats / No, I should hook up with Tay Keith," he raps. "Fans keep on pulling me one way, haters pull me in another / got more hooks in me than Swae Lee."

It didn't take long for Swae to catch wind of the reference, taking some time to show Em some love. After acknowledging that yes, he does indeed have a substantial volume of hooks, Swae declared Eminem to be "a legend." Common knowledge to hip-hop heads, but a statement that might prove divisive to younger listeners. Perhaps one day we shall see the pair join forces. Until then, check out the praise below.

Bizarre Reflects On Eminem Bromance, Jay Electronica’s Betrayal, & D12’s Run

Bizarre has stories for days on Drink Champs.

Though he wasn't a guest on Eminem's recent Music To Be Murdered By album, Bizarre's spirit was felt on "Those Kinda Nights." A veteran of D12 and longtime friend of Em, Peter S. Bizarre has been steadily putting in work since the group's split. Today, he sat down with Nore and DJ EFN on REVOLT's Drink Champs, where he spent two hours reflecting on everything from recent feuds to amazing bits of hip-hop history.

Off the bat, Nore inquires about some of Bizarre's recent shots at Joe Buddenand Jay Electronica, emphasizing that the latter felt like a particularly hurtful betrayal. "Jay Electronica used to be down with us a long time ago," says Biz. "He used to be an artist for Mr. Porter. He used to shoot B-roll footage for us, go on the road and do shit like that. He was around in the studios. That's the story behind that. He said something about Marshall saying something about 2Pac, and he dissed him pretty hard like he never knew us. I'm real big on family."

There was a rumor about him from when we used to have battles at the hip-hop shop," reflects Bizarre, when asked about Eminem's pre-fame reputation. "I had heard there was this 'whiteboy named Eminem, he cold!' He was the champion, so what they do is the cypher would be [on stage.] Proof was the manager of the hip-hop shop so he'd put him in the back in the office. Nobody had ever seen him until the battle. He'd have his hat down real low over his head and shit. When I first met him I was like damn, he was killing everybody. Him and Proof was selling this shit like White Men Can't Jump."

He also reveals that Em was always a perfectionist in the studio, encouraging the members to deliver better takes -- sometimes for hours at a time. "He was like Dr. Dre times twenty," says Biz. "He's hard on himself too. He'd go back and do the same song two weeks later...He work hard, man. He'll sit there and mumble syllables trying to make a match. I'm like goddamn bro! I can't even rap if I'm not in the studio."

In true Bizarre fashion, he soon finds himself reminiscing on some outlandish antics. "I took Em to Freaknik," he laughs, prompting hysteria from the Drink Champs crew. "He was the only whiteboy there." But before that, the pair hit up "How Could I Be Down," where they witnessed a brawl between Fat Joe and a "Swole-ass crip" from Tha Dogg Pound. En route to Atlanta, they found themselves struggling to get on the Grey Hound bus as Em didn't have a suitcase; in its place, his belongings were carried in a garbage bag. "The girls were loving him. I think he might have been the only white boy at Freaknik."

Around the twenty-six minute mark, Bizarre remembers the first time he met Dr. Dre, and the dynamic that came after. "I've been around Dr. Dre about thirty times, I can count on one hand how many words I've said to him," reflects Biz. "He always be quoting my lyrics all the time, like Bizarre you said '____', that shit was crazy!' I'm like, damn. This Dr. Dre talking!" As it happens, they would end up using Dre to resolve deadlocked votes, as they did when selecting Devil's Night's lead single. "Swift, Kuniva and Mr. Porter wanted 'Shit Can Happen'," explains Bizarre. "Me, Proof, and Em wanted 'Purple Pills.' Dr. Dre was the final vote."

Eminem Unpackages "Music To Be Murdered By" Merch Collection

Show your support for one of the all-time greats.

It’s basically a given that Eminem will debut on top of the Billboard 200 next week when his stats have been calculated, dethroning Selena Gomez after she officially defeated Roddy Ricch to earn her first No. 1 album of the new decade. In a year that feels like it will be historic in terms of music drops, surprises, and general quality sounds, Marshall Mathers started us off by dropping Music To Be Murdered By out of absolutely nowhereDespite 50 Cent’s warnings, nobody was expecting Slim Shady to impact us the way he did at the end of last week and, if you’ve been feeling the album for the last few days, you can now cash out on some branded merchandise to show your support.

Packaged alongside a copy of the digital album (gotta pad those pure unit numbers, nahmean?), Music To Be Murdered By officially has its own merch capsule on Eminem’s webshop.  The project is available to be purchased in vinyl, cassette, and disk form, with hoodies, long sleeve shirts, and t-shirts being offered featuring the cover art and other designs attached to them. Items are reasonably priced with tees going for $30, long sleeves at $35, and hoodies at $55. Keep in mind that products listed on the site are pre-orders and will only be shipped out in a few weeks.

Joe Budden Responds To Eminem: "He Should Stop Dissing Me"

Joe Budden brushes off his past Eminem comments as “moments in time.”

The feud between Eminem and Joe Budden goes back years and whenever the former releases new music, fans will spend some time dissecting the lyrical content to see if they can interpret any Budden shade in the mix. In the biggest surprise of the year thus far, Eminem released a shock album last week called Music To Be Murdered By, which features Juice WRLD, Young M.A, Don Toliver, and members of Slaughterhouse. Unsurprisingly, Budden was not one of the Slaughterhouse members featured on the album, which makes sense considering his recent comments about the group’s ties to Shady Records. There are some lines on the project that clearly have to do with Joe, including the “Traitor Joe” lyric, and the retired rapper is now sticking up for himself on his podcast by suggesting they just put their differences to the side.

As reported by HipHopDX, Joe Budden addressed his beef with Eminem on Episode 314 of TheJoe Budden Podcast. Speaking on the “Lock It Up” bar in which Em spits “Try’na save at Kroger, so why would I give a fuck about back-stabbin’ Trader Joe for?”, Budden had the following to note:

“Trader Joe, Trader Joe, Trader Joe — that’s hurtful,” he said. “That’s not right! That’s offensive, man. Trader Joe? I’m Joe. You’re telling me Joe is a traitor? The same way I feel like [Eminem] should stop dissing Lord Jamar, he should stop dissing me. Hey, whatever we had, that exchange when you did all the [interviews with Sway], and whenever I said whatever I said on the pod, it’s a moment in time. We had our exchange. It’s over. In 2020, I can’t harbor negativity not only towards one of the best rappers, but somebody I’m not angry at. That’s what I gotta stop doin’. I don’t be mad at the people I come in and kill. There’s no hostility after that.”

Elsewhere in the podcast, Joe Budden discusses the newly-released documentary about Aaron Hernandez, Lori Harvey’s clique, the desperation from Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez to pass Roddy Ricch, and more with his co-hosts. Check it out below.

Machine Gun Kelly Claps Back after Eminem Dismisses Him On Unaccommodating

On Eminem's surprise album Music to Be Murdered By, Eminem addresses and dismisses Machine Gun Kelly on his Young M.A featured track "Unaccommodating."

"But when they ask me is the war finished with MGK? Of course it is
I cleansed him of his mortal sins, I'm God and the Lord forgives even the devil worshippers
I'm moving on but you know your scruples are gone when you're born with Lucifer's horns
And you're from the school of Notorious, Puba, Cube and The Poor Righteous Teachers tutored my students
Showed them all the blueprint and formula
But it seems like the more they studied my music, the more they remind me of eyeballs
I'm watching my pupils get cornier," Em raps.

After hearing the track, MGK jumped on Twitter and suggested he wants more smoke.

"Mad af I just stepped out a loud room to hear this bullshit," MGK typed. "He’s been rich and mad for 20 years straight."

Kelly's next album is a pop-punk effort with Travis Barker.  Are you allowed to address rap beef on a punk album?

Eminem Criticized By Manchester Mayor For Ariana Grande "Bomb" Lyric

Eminem has already received plenty of backlash for his reference to the 2017 Manchester bombings.

Eminem proved he's still his controversial self on Friday when he dropped the album Music To Be Murdered By out of nowhere. The album is chock-full of shocking material, and he doesn't shy away from calling out certain people by name, including Machine Gun Kelly, whom he has had beef with for quite some time. However, one namedrop was particularly not well-received by some listeners. Eminem included a lyric in his song "Unaccommodating that referenced a terrorist attack that occurred at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester in 2017: "But I'm contemplating yelling 'bombs away' on the game/Like I'm outside of an Ariana Grande concert waiting." The tragedy left 23 people, mostly children, dead, and 130 more injured, and has deeply traumatized the singer.

On Friday, after the surprise album had dropped, Manchester mayor Andy Burnham addressed the upsetting line in a statement. "This is unnecessarily hurtful and deeply disrespectful to the families and all those affected." Mr. Burnham's sentiments were echoed by Figen Murray, the mother of Martyn Hett, who died in the attack. In a tweet that has seen been deleted, Figen voiced her disapproval for the lyric, writing, "Feels like he is piggybacking on the fame of Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber and says distasteful things about other celebrities. Not clever. Totally pointless. And before all Eminem fans pounce on me, I am not interested and will not engage." Figen revealed that she ultimately deleted the tweet because "I knew I would get lots of abuse and insults."

Figen has campaigned for the introduction of Martyn's Law, which would require venues to introduce more stringent security checks. Martyn's former partner, Russell Hayward, also expressed his disappointment in the lyric.

"It’s disappointing but not surprising that #Eminem would use controversial lyrics about the Manchester bomb, dragging the victims’ families & Ariana back into a very dark time," Russell tweeted. "Not sure how popular he is these days but I hope any success he gets from the back of this is worth it."

Machine Gun Kelly Doesn’t Seem As Willing As Eminem To End Their Beef

MGK reacts to the shoutouts on "Music To Be Murdered By".

Who could forget Eminem and Machine Gun Kelly's famous beef of 2018? They both penned diss tracks directed at one another and MGK's in particular, entitled "Rap Devil", caused quite the stir. The beef is also probably at the top of your consciousness because it has just been rehashed. Eminem makes two references to MGK on his surprise album that dropped on Friday, Music To Be Murdered By

Em's lyrics always get people talking and one of the first takeaways when listening to his new record is that he decided to put his beef with MGK behind him. On the record's second track, the Young M.A-assisted "Unaccommodating," Em raps: "But when they ask me is the war finished with MGK? Of course it is / I cleansed him of his mortal sins, I'm God, I'm the Lord, forgives even the devil worshippers / I'm moving on but you know your scruples are gone when you're born with Lucifer's horns."

Based on these bars, it's pretty unambiguous that Em isn't interested in taking shots at MGK anymore, yet still interested enough to mention his name twice on his album (the second time is on "Yah Yah"). However, MGK still seems to hold some ill will towards Shady. After Music To Be Murdered By dropped on Friday, MGK tweeted, "mad af I just stepped out a loud room to hear this bullshit." If it wasn't clear what "bullshit" he was referring to, he followed this tweet with a clue: "he’s been rich and mad for 20 years straight." He added the throwing-out-trash emoji to this message, intimating that he isn't too impressed with the quality of Em's latest.

Perhaps MGK will comment further on this beef on his forthcoming pop-punk album, Tickets To My Downfall

Eminem "Music To Be Murdered By" & Mac Miller "Circles" First Week Sales Projections

Looks like Em is going to come out on top.

It was a big week for music and a lot of it came as a surprise. Mac Miller’s estate shared his first posthumous album, Circles, after announcing its imminent arrival just a week before. Eminem shocked us by dropping his own album, Music To Be Murdered By, with literally zero heads-up. While Dreamville has been teasing the deluxe expansion of Revenge of the Dreamers III for some time, it was only revealed a few days ago that it would be coming on Friday. With people flocking to these exciting releases and trying to divide their time between all of them, one might wonder what the Billboard charts will look like next week.

The sales projections are in courtesy of HitsDailyDouble, and it appears Eminem is going to come out on top. With estimated sales of 300,000-325,000, he is on track to secure his tenth consecutive No. 1 album. Pure sales make up about 110,000-125,000 of that, as CDs, vinyls and cassettes are all available to order through his webstore. According to HipHopNMore, Em’s last album Kamikaze – which was also a surprise drop – opened slightly better than Music To Be Murdered Bymu with 434,000 sales.

As nice as it would be to see Mac snag the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200, Circles is up against another major release: Halsey’s Manic. While Circles is projected to move 175,000-200,000 units, Manic is hovering in the 185,000-210,000 range. There’s still a whole week of fan activity that can alter these numbers. We saw hip hop dominate last week with the streaming battle between Roddy Ricch‘s “The Box” and Justin Bieber‘s “Yummy”, so perhaps Circles will perform a similar feat. It has sold 50,000-75,000 in pure sales so far and physicals can still be purchased on Mac’s webstore.

Eminem’s Daughter Hailie Jade Appears To Respond To Manchester Bars

Eminem has always been controversial.

Eminem shocked fans and the general rap world today when he dropped his brand new album called Music To Be Murdered By. The Detroit MC took a dark turn with some of his lyrics and spoke heavily on some of the tragedies that have gone down in the world as of late. One of those tragedies was the Manchester bombing which happened a few years ago outside of an Ariana Grande show. On the song “Unaccommodating,” Em spits “But I’m contemplating yelling ‘bombs away’ on the game/Like I’m outside of an Ariana Grande concert waiting.”

Grande fans were appalled by the lyrics and took to social media where they voiced their disgust. Of course, the Manchester bombing was a traumatic event for many people so it shouldn’t be surprising that some people hold sensitivity to it. According to The Blast, Em’s daughter Hailie Jade took to her Instagram story where she appeared to respond to the controversy.

“Your future is more valuable than your temporary feelings,” she wrote. This caption could mean a wide range of things although some believe she is talking about those who are offended by her father’s bars. These days, everyone thinks everything is a sub so you really never know.

What did you think of the Eminem album? Let us know in the comments below.

Juice WRLD Photo From The Night He Recorded Eminem Verse Hits The ‘Gram

Juice WRLD looked content to be working on a track with his idol.

It’s a real shame that Juice WRLD never got a chance to hear his verse on Eminem’s new album Music To Be Murdered By get released while he was still alive. The late 20-year-old expressed how much of a fan he was of the Detroit legend, admitting that he was majorly influenced by Eminem when he decided to get into music. Included on the track “Godzilla,” Juice WRLD has a highlight appearance on the album, chopping up Em’s fast-paced bars and his extremely rapid-fire delivery nicely with a melodic hook. The young man clearly would have been excited about the surprise drop and, in a photo shared by the Chicagoan’s personal photographer, Juice WRLD can be seen on the night he recorded his portion of the cut.

Chris Long worked hand-in-hand with Juice WRLD to capture some behind-the-scenes moments from the star’s career, following him around and providing him with content to share on social media and other outlets. He was among those who kept the major secret that Juice WRLD was working with Eminem, contributing to his surprise album and featuring on “Godzilla” and he documented the night by taking several photographs of the young legend at work.

Alongside D Savage and a number of other people, Juice WRLD smokes a joint and looks at the camera in the picture, knowing full well that he just recorded a standout hook for his idol’s upcoming project. It’s sad to realize that he’ll never hear the track in its final form but we know that he’s looking down on us all with a big smile on his face, bumping that new Em until the wheels fall off.

Eminem Continues To Fire Shots At Lord Jamar On "I Will"

Eminem’s new album “Music To Be Murdered By” continues his streak of controversial takes.

At the wee hours of the morning, Eminem swung in with a brand new album titled, Music To Be Murdered By. The project came at a surprise with no forewarning but as expected, the middle-aged rapper took to wax to air out his grievances. Among his targets was Lord Jamar who’s been having back and forths with Eminem indirectly over the years.

Eminem Continues To Fire Shots At Lord Jamar On "I Will"

On “I Will,” Eminem takes direct aim at Lord Jamar once again. Em’s previously done this on his album Kamikaze while Lord Jamar has continued to egg on the Detroit native during Vlad TV interviews.

I’m more than you bargained for and I am far more worse than a fourty-some bar Lord Jamar verse / Nothing means more than respect, so when I curse / You could say I swore to protect / My image I have zero time or regard for/ I never was, been claiming rap when it’s not yours/ If it was anyone’s house G Rap and Rakim would be havin’ you mop floors / Run-DMC would be havin’ you cleanin’ sinks / Yeah, your group was off the chain, but you were the weakest link

This is clearly in reference to Jamar’s claim that Em is a guest in the house of hip-hop. Clearly, it’s been weighing on Eminem’s mind for a hot minute. Will 2020 be the year they put their differences aside? Probably not.

Nick Cannon Ignores Eminem’s Surprise Drop, Calls Mac Miller’s "Circles" A "Classic"

Nick Cannon pays homage to Mac Miller’s post-mortem album, “Circles.”

Nick Cannon is one of the hardest working men not only in hip-hop but in the entire entertainment industry overall. He recently dropped his first solo full-length project in four years, The Miseducation of the Negro You Love To Hate, stepped back into the battle rap realm going head to head with Eminem, and got the morning show hosting gig for the highly-popularized LA-based radio station, Power 106

With music being very prevalent in his career at the moment, the “Pray For Him” rapper took time out to share some kind words about Mac Miller‘s posthumous album, Circles (2020), all the while totally disregarding his nemesis, Eminem’s, surprise drop album, Music To Be Murdered

In a thoughtful Instagram post featuring a photo of Miller’s Circles album cover, Nick Cannon kept it short and sweet stating, “Rest in Power King! #Circles is classic.”

While many participants within the culture have been critical of Nick Cannon’s actions as of late, Nick Cannon has continued to be one of the most creative personalities in hip-hop diversifying his assets and ventures into many different avenues. His new podcast, Cannon’s Class has also enlightened some of his dedicated followers. However, if he continues to prod Eminem with diss tracks, he could potentially end his own recording career.

Check out Nick Cannon’s reflective post about Mac Miller’s post-mortem LP, Circles, in the Instagram post provided below.

Eminem’s "Music To Be Murdered By": Dre Beats, Lord Jamar Disses & New Friends

Eminem goes Alfred Hitchcock circa 1960.

Today, Eminem surprised the world and dropped his tenth studio album Music To Be Murdered By. Here are some of the key takeaways.

THE GANG’S ALL HERE

Like Kamikaze, Music To Be Murdered To brought several new collaborators into Em’s circle, including three placements from D.A. “Got That Dope” Doman. For the most part, however, the album find Em reconnecting with many longstanding collaborators, including the main musical core behind Relapse. For the first time in a minute, Dr. Dre blessed Slim with four instrumental contributions, not including skits: “Premonition,” “Never Love Again,” “Little Engine,” and “Lock It Up.” Alongside the Good Doctor stood producer Dawaun Parker, the clutch behind-the-scenes MVP behind much of Relapse.

Another recurring presence is Luis Resto, a multi-instrumentalist responsible for working on many of Eminem’s best beats of all time. A perusal through the credits reveals Resto’s name on fifteen of the album’s twenty cuts, providing “additional keyboards” as well as deeper compositional contributions. As one of his most loyal collaborators behind-the-scenes, it’s time to start recognizing Resto’s impact on Em’s sound.

Though Music To Be Murdered To found Em collaborating with many new friends, he also made sure to connect with some former collaborators. Former D12 associate turned hype-man Denaun Porter lays down a kinetic beat for the lyrical banger “Yah Yah,” which marks Em’s first official collaboration with Q-Tip. Not to mention his first official collaboration with Black Thought following their turn on the 2009 BET cypher. He even brought Slaughterhouse out of retirement on “I Will,” though old friend-turned-foe Joe Budden was a notable snub. Naturally, longtime friend and collaborator Royce Da 5’9 held it down with three verses and a few production credits, and it wouldn’t be an Eminem album without a hook from Skylar Grey. Even Alchemist, who spent a longstanding run as Em’s touring DJ, came through to co-produce on “Stepdad.”

DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS

Since declaring war on his enemies in 2018, Em spent the majority of the following year fielding petty shots and deeper critiques from the likes of Lord Jamar, Machine Gun Kelly, and Nick Cannon. And while many fans openly prayed for Em to rain fire and brimstone upon him, it seemed unlikely that he would dedicate a full diss track to one singular party. It’s no surprise to see Slim address each one individually on Music To Be Murdered By, to varying degrees of intensity.

Lord Jamar catches the most bars, as delivered on Slaughterhouse collaboration “I Will.” As his verse nears its conclusion, he reverts back to the “hip-hop-as-a-house” analogy that has been a throughline throughout their war of words:

I am far more worse than a forty-some bar Lord Jamar verse
Nothing means more than respect, so when I curse
You could say I swore to protect
My image I have zero time or regard for
A never-was-been claiming rap when it’s not yours
If it was anyone’s house G Rap and Rakim would be having you mop floors
Run-DMC would be havin’ you cleanin’ sinks
Yeah your group was off the chain, but you were the weakest link

Given that Jamar will likely respond to this by the time next Monday rolls around, it’s likely this particular cycle will continue until it simply dissipates. On that note, Em also addressed Machine Gun Kelly twice, leaving fans unpacking his motive through mixed signals. The first arrived on the Young M.A. collaboration track “Unaccomodating,” as Em seemingly moved to call a halt on the once-heated duel between Rap God and Rap Devil. “But when they ask me is the war finished with MGK? Of course it is / I cleansed him of his mortal sins, I’m God and the Lord forgives — even the devil worshippers,” raps Em, in the second verse. “I’m moving on but you know your scruples are gone when you’re born with Lucifer’s horns.”

While this confident declaration of victory could easily be seen as — at the very least — mildly antagonistic, it still feels like an armistice. And yet, merely eight songs later, he’s letting off another jab. On a track with Royce Da 5’9”, Black Thought, and Q-Tip of all place, Em took a moment to son the Gunner, spitting a dexterous scheme equating him to a premature baby born in his image: “Me and this game we got married already, had the prenup ready, fucked on her, should’ve seen her belly / she barely was three months pregnant, Bitch had to give me a baby, we named it Machine Gun Kelly.” One big happy family.

And course, the trilogy wouldn’t be complete without a reference to Nick Cannon, who has been doing his damndest to elicit a response from his longtime sparring partner. His wish, albeit a diluted version, was granted on “No Regrets.” “For some adversaries, I carry big guns,” he spits, in what feels like a spiritual successor to “Fall.” “So some targets’ll get the kill shot, some, I just barely nicked ’em.”

ROOTS RUN DEEP

If there’s one thing that has remained important to modern-day Eminem, it’s the preservation of hip-hop history. In an age that finds many young voices glossing over the cultural forefathers, Em has made it his personal mission to shout out his peers and chief influences alike. One of the first mentions arrives on the opening track “Premonition,” as Em shouts out three of his former collaborators; by his estimation, Tech N9ne, 2 Chainz and Jay-Z are kindred spirits, inevitably plagued by some of the more frustrating critiques. “Instead of us being credited for longevity and being able to keep it up for this long at this level, we get told we’ll never be what we were,” he vents. “Bitch, if I was as half as good as I was, I’m still twice as good as you’ll ever be.”

A proud student of the school of “Notorious, Puba, Cube and The Poor Righteous Teachers,” Em also takes a moment to shout out his old pal Sticky Fingaz on “Godzilla.” And while quick homages are scattered throughout, the centerpieces arrives on golden-era homage “Yah Yah.” It’s only appropriate that a gathering of elite lyricists is home to Slim’s love-letter to his formative influences:

Now here’s to LL, Big L and Del
K-Solo, Treach, and G Rap
DJ Polo, Tony D, ODB, Moe Dee, Run-DMC
Ed OG, and EPMD, D.O.C., Ice-T, Evil Dee
King Tee, UTFO, and Schoolly D, PE, and BDP
YZ and Chi-Ali, Rakim and Eric B., they were like my therapy
From B.I.G. and Paris, Three Times Dope, and some we’ll never see, and PRT
N.W.A and Eazy-E, and D-R-E was like my GPS
Without him, I don’t know where I’d be

Be sure to check out Music To Be Murdered Byitself a homage to the Master Of Suspense Alfred Hitchcock, and share your thoughts accordingly.

Eminem’s "Music To Be Murdered By" Produced By Dr. Dre, D.A. Doman & More

Em tapped some of his frequent collaborators as well as some new names.

Eminem took us all by surprise on Friday when he dropped his new album, Music To Be Murdered By, out of absolutely nowhere. The Hitchcock-inspired album pays homage to the late film director’s 1958 one and only album of the same name, with Em posing with a hatchet in one hand and a pistol in the other both held up to his head on the cover, just as Hitchock did. While this no-warning drop was definitely a wonderful surprise for his fans, others were less than impressed with some of the controversial lyrics. The album boasts some exciting features, such as Don Toliver, Young M.A, Royce Da 5’9″, Ed Sheeran, Anderson .Paak, Black Thought, the late Juice WRLD, and more, but the production team is even more impressive. Eminem Credits Alfred Hitchcock For Inspiring "Music To Be Murdered By"

Eminem might be back in his bag and it’s because of Alfred Hitchcock.

Eminem came through with a brand new album earlier today titled, Music To Be Murdered By. The title alone is very Eminem-esque but just like Kamikaze, he didn’t give anyone a warning before its release. The thing is, Eminem hasn’t really dropped anything that notable in the last decade and the narrative surrounding his legacy has changed a lot.

Of course, his latest project came with controversy as he addressed the MGK feud, referenced Ariana Grande‘s concert bombing, and even recreated the Mandalay Bay mass shooting for the video for “Darkness.” Needless to say, there are some dark moments in there with the production enhancing the grim feel.

The reason for that is that Eminem took notes from Alfred Hitchcock. The cover of the project is in reference to Jeff Alexander’s 1958 album, Alfred Hitchcock Presents Music To Be Murdered By. Em shared the project’s cover art, writing, “Inspired by the master, Uncle Alfred! #MusicToBeMurderedBy.”

This marks Eminem’s first drop since Nick Cannon came at him with several diss tracks. Although Em didn’t respond, and Nick Cannon declaring himself the winner by default (because he wouldn’t have been able to win a rap battle any other way), it seems a bit more scathing that the Wild N Out host is still dropping diss tracks as Em kicks off a new decade on a high note.

Eminem Ends Machine Gun Kelly Beef On "Music To Be Murdered By"

Eminem says he cleansed MGK of his “mortal sins.”

Eminem always tends to strike when it’s least expected. Despite his current feud with Nick Cannon — which is pretty much one-sided at this point, as Em isn’t even entertaining the comedian’s advances — Marshall Mathers decided to use his time to combat another one of his notorious enemies, going after Machine Gun Kelly on his surprise album Music To Be Murdered By

With a swift turn of the clock, hip-hop fiends were scouring through their designated streaming services when they realized that Eminem dropped a rare project from out of nowhere, starting the year off with a major blast. As you would expect, fans are already dissecting the legendary rapper’s lyrical content, going word-for-word and determining what could be interpreted as a diss or not. Thankfully, Em made it pretty clear when he was chatting about Machine Gun Kelly, officially declaring the war between them “dead” and explaining why.

On the second song from the album, the Young M.A-assisted “Unaccommodating,” MGK is referenced with Slim Shady noting that he will no longer be throwing shade in his direction. “But when they ask me is the war finished with MGK? Of course it is,” raps the Detroit legend. “I cleansed him of his mortal sins, I’m God, I’m the Lord, forgives even the devil worshippers/I’m moving on but you know your scruples are gone when you’re born with Lucifer’s horns/And you’re from the school of Notorious, Puba, Cube and The Poor Righteous Teachers tutored my students/Showed them all the blueprint and formula/But it seems like the more they studied my music, the more they remind me of eyeballs/I’m watching my pupils get cornier.”

Do you think MGK will have something to say about this? Maybe a response record is already on the way?

Eminem Fans Erupt On Twitter After "Music To Be Murdered By" Surprise Drop

The original Stans were shook.

Eminem managed to pull one over on us on Friday when he gave no warning before dropping his new album, Music To Be Murdered By. The surprise drop definitely caught everyone off guard. Though producer S1 confirmed last week that Em had been busy in the studio lately, nobody was prepared for his new music to be released so soon. He's already received plenty of backlash for some of the lyrics on the 20-track project, most notably for the lyric, "But I'm contemplating yelling "bombs away" on the game / Like I'm outside of an Ariana Grande concert waiting." This line is of course a reference to the terrorist attack that took place at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester in 2017, in which 23 people (mostly children) died and 130 others were injured. He also addressed his beef with Machine Gun Kelly on the tracks, "Yah Yah" and "Unaccommodating."

His fans were not concerned with the controversial lyrics, though, as they took to Twitter to express their shock and excitement over the unexpected album.

Eminem Releases Surprise Album "Music To Be Murdered By"

We all knew it was coming!

Alas, the moment has come. Starting off the year with a major bang, Eminem decided to strike once again, impacting the airwaves once the clock struck midnight with a brand new album. Although we had heard rumblings that the legendary Motor City rapper was working on fresh music, we weren’t aware of a timeline detailing when we could expect it. 50 Cent mentioned on several occasions that he knew of Em’s plans but even he was tight-lipped on the entire process. Well, the album came from out of the blue last night, introducing us to twenty new records featuring a shocking list of talent.

Skimming through the tracklist to Music To Be Murdered By, you’ll notice features from Don Toliver, Young M.A, Royce Da 5’9″, Ed Sheeran, Anderson .Paak, Black Thought, the late Juice WRLD, and many more. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s project of the exact same name, Em used the auteur’s iconic photograph as a reference for his own cover artwork this time around.

As always with a new Eminem project, it’s worth giving this an attentive listen to hear all the bars he’s spitting about beef, pop culture, tragedies, and much more. He addresses just about everything here, speaking on his feud with Machine Gun Kelly, the Manchester bombing at an Ariana Grande concert, and more.

What do you think of Music To Be Murdered By? Let us know in the comments.

Eminem Catches Heat Over Ariana Grande "Bomb" Lyric On "Music To Be Murdered By"

You'd think they'd never heard an Eminem track before.

Now, you know Marshall Mathers can't come back onto the scene without ruffling a few feathers. On Friday (January 16), Eminem surprised the masses with a brand new album titled Music To Be Murdered By. The Alfred Hitchcock-inspired project was immediately a hit with fans and non-fans alike, but in true Eminem form, his lyrics were scrutinized and critics came for the Detroit rapper with a vengeance.

While Nick Cannon is somewhere waiting for Em to respond to the plethora of diss tracks the Wild 'N Out mogul has continued to release, Eminem did mention at least one foe on Music to Be Murdered By. He rapped, "I'm a sight to see, but you can see from the ring I'm wearing / Me and this game, we got married already / Had the prenup ready, f*ck all that ever seen her belly / She barely was three months pregnant / B*tch had to give me a baby, we named it Machine Gun Kelly.

After insinuating that he helped birth all that is MGK, Eminem also said on "Unaccommodating": "But when they ask me is the war finished with MGK? Of course it is / I cleansed him of his mortal sins / I'm God and the Lord forgives." While his Machine Gun Kelly quips caught the attention of his audience, social media lit up over his line that mentioned Ariana Grande.

"But it seems like the more they studied my music, the more they remind me of eyeballs / I'm watching my pupils get cornier (Uh) / But I'm contemplating yelling "bombs away" on the game / Like I'm outside of an Ariana Grande concert waiting." The line, of course, nods the Manchester Arena suicide bombing that occurred at an Ariana Grande concert. Twenty-three people died and over 130 others were injured, and Ariana has spoken about how the incident has given her PTSD.

Throughout Music To Be Murdered By, Eminem uses his platform to highlight hip hop artists that he respects while also calling attention to controversial moments involving violence including bombings and shootings (make sure to watch the music video for his single "Darkness" here). Cancel Culture was quick with this one, so check out a few responses to Eminem's "Unaccommodating" below and let us know what you think of Music To Be Murdered By thus far.

Nick Cannon Comes For Eminem’s Stans On ‘Used To Look Up To You’

Nick Cannon can't quit Eminem.  After back to back to back Shady disses without a lyrical response from the man himself, Cannon lashes out at the Stans who Stan for Em on his new track, the comically auto-tuned "Used To Look Up You".

N*ggas out here tweetin' like they been a savage
Dick ridin' lil' Marshall Mathers
Had to put on my turban like I'm Aladdin
N*ggas out here cappin', Black Lives Matter

50 Cent says he told Eminem to ignore Cannon because Nick can't stop scoring own-goals.

You can’t argue with a fool,” 50 explained. “When you understand that a person is not registering even when they’re losing, then the argument goes forever. So you should just stop.”

Is this more foolishness from Nick?  (Or perhaps it is all some kind of next-level troll project that we aren't evolved enough to understand.)

S1 Confirms Eminem Has Been Recording Lots Of New Music

Can we expect a new Eminem album in 2020?

Eminem has been relatively quiet since dropping off Kamikaze in 2018, emerging from the shadows to lay down verses for Boogie, Conway, Logic, and Fat Joe. Even amidst increasing vitriol from Nick Cannon and Lord Jamar, Slim has opted to keep quiet and focus on the task at hand. As such, speculation of a new album began to circulate, despite any lack of concrete details. Thankfully, HipHopNMore sat down for a dope conversation with producer Symbolyc 1, aka S1, who confirmed that Em was putting in some serious work.

Coming off contributions to Em’s “Nice Guy” and “Normal,” HHNM openly whether Em was crafting his tenth studio album, prompting an intriguing response from S1. “I’ve been working with Eminem quite a bit,” he reveals. “They’re always real quiet and real secretive but I just know he’s been cutting a lot of records so we’ll see what happens with that.”

Aside from working with Em, S1 also reveals he’s been contributing to J. Cole‘s upcoming album, which has been all but confirmed for a 2020 release. Clearly, the storied producer is looking at another big year. As are the fans. Be sure to check out the whole interview over at HHNM, and sound off below — are you excited for a new project from Slim Shady?

Eminem Was The Best-Selling Male Artist Of The Decade In Pure Album Sales

A major title for Eminem.

Detroit rapper Eminem released four studio albums in the last decade and that was enough to earn him yet another title contributing to his legendary status. As we wait patiently for him to drop his next body of work after it was teased by 50 Cent months ago, we have a unique opportunity of looking back on the last ten years of musical activity and determining who had the biggest impact on us as a community. While much of Em's significance came before the last decade, he continued his string of successful releases all the way until two years ago with Kamikaze. It was revealed today that he delivered enough pure sales to be named the male artist with the best-selling albums, clocking in nearly 14 million pure units moved.

People wanted to permanently keep Eminem's music in their playlists, purchasing copies of his albums in the last decade instead of simply streaming it. The rapper was so popular amongst physical music fiends that he ended up on top of everybody else, being named the best-selling male artist of the decade in terms of pure album sales.

It shouldn't really come as a surprise to see him striving this hard. Next decade, we'll probably catch Drake or someone else in this spot. Who do you predict will be there?

50 Cent Told Eminem To Ignore Nick Cannon: "You Can’t Argue With A Fool"

He also called Cannon’s diss record’s “terrible.”

He may have developed the reputation as hip hop’s biggest troll, but 50 Cent claims he knows when people should step away from arguments. We all bore witness to Nick Cannon‘s return to the music scene after Eminem dropped a handful of bars targeting Nick and the Wild ‘n’ Out host’s ex-wife, Mariah Carey. The “Lord Above” track from Fat Joe‘s Family Ties was a stand-out on the record and prompted Cannon to step in the booth.

What emerged were Nick’s diss tracks “Invitation,” “Pray for Him,” and “Canceled.” In the end, Nick declared himself the winner considering Em didn’t respond to his lyrical attacks, and 50 Cent recently shared that the Detroit emcee did the right thing. Fif was attending the press tour day for ABC’s Television Critics Association and chatted briefly with The Wrap about the Cannon-Eminem exchange.

“I told him don’t even say nothing to him,” 50 Cent said. “The record is terrible.” He added, “You can’t argue with a fool. When you understand that a person is not registering even when they’re losing, then the argument goes forever. So you should just stop.” We’re wondering if Fif is going to pump the brakes on his beef with French Montana anytime soon? It looks as if French is just getting started.

Eminem’s Top 25 Best Beats Of All Time

Revisit the greatest hits of Eminem’s extensive and unique production discography.

Though he’s widely regarded among the game’s greatest lyricists, Eminem has amassed a sizeable repertoire of production work during his lengthy tenure. Having worked with The Bass Brothers, Luis Resto, and of course the legendary Dr. Dre, Em’s willingness to learn the process kept his musicality honed behind the boards. A journey beginning with co-production on The Slim Shady LP, it wasn’t long before Em was laying down beats for Jay-Z, Nas, 50 Cent, G-Unit, The Game, Jadakiss, Redman, Lloyd Banks and more.

Though the bulk of his instrumental work was reserved for his own material, Em’s unique sound and style made him an interesting producer to follow. Like his mentor Dre, Em’s inclinations veered toward the darker sound, though his instincts often skewed closer to mischievous. His creative relationship with Luis Resto, a guitarist and pianist, ensured those elements remained fixtures of Slim’s toolkit. In truth, it’s unclear how his vast production repertoire has been received in the greater hip-hop conversation. Yet given the volume of quality he’s laid down throughout the years, Em’s input deserves to be highlighted with a renewed sense of appreciation.

Now, a little over a year removed from Eminem stepping into the producer’s chair on Kamikaze, here are his twenty-five best beats of all time.

25. EMINEM – SOLDIER

One of Eminem’s biggest strengths as a producer is his ability to translate his emotions through music. His third studio album, 2002’s The Eminem Show found Em handling the majority of the production, his first leading turn in the director’s chair. Contextually speaking, the album served as an explanation; The Marshall Mathers LP told us what pissed him off, whereas TES highlighted why. The layers were unfolding before our eyes, and Em made sure to let his music speak accordingly. “Soldier,” the first part of the album’s thematic center, was an outlet for Marshall Mathers frustrations – not Slim Shady, but the man behind the curtain. With up-tempo and tense atmosphere, his melancholic melody suggests a sense of hopelessness. A testament to Em’s ability to reiterate his point in dual mediums, and one of the most personal beats of his career.

24. JADAKISS FT EMINEM, STYLES P, & SHEEK LOUCH – WELCOME TO D BLOCK

“Till I Collapse” made it abundantly clear that Eminem held Jadakiss in high regard, so their collaborative partnership in 2004 was hardly surprising. Given that Em spent that era on somewhat of a production tear, it seemed inevitable that he’d be lacing his first journey into D Block’s territory. Sonically, “Welcome To D Block” found Em operating in the headspace he’d carry into Obie’s Second Rounds On Me later that year. Sparse arrangements, bleak and angry in nature; a man bearing the scars of wars against Ja Rule and Benzino. Perhaps emboldened by D Block’s street pedigree, Em’s desolate Kiss Of Death banger retains his unique musical characteristics while still capturing the unfamiliar qualities of Jadakiss’ fabled home turf.

LISTEN: Jadakiss ft. Eminem, Styles P, & Sheek Louch – Welcome To D Block

23. OBIE TRICE, EMINEM, & 50 CENT – LOVE ME

Perhaps an unconventional selection, 8 Mile’s “Love Me” remains one of the quintessential posse cuts in the Shady Records canon. Originally presented in a Kay Slay freestyle, Em took the original skeleton and expanded upon it. With a methodical and spooky arrangement, “Love Me” is simultaneously frantic and hypnotic; as Em appropriately puts it, it’s like “trying to smoke crack and go to sleep.” The drums are as simple as they come, barely-there kicks and a clockwork snare, a far cry from the instrumentation of today. Yet Em was always at his best when tailoring beats to his flows, and the ghostly drift of “Love Me” proved that less can most definitely be more.

22. D12 – WHEN THE MUSIC STOPS

A collaborative effort between Eminem and Kon Artis, currently known as Mr. Porter, “When The Music Stops” deserves due credit for bringing a harpsichord into the hip-hop fold. An instrument favored by Mads Mikkelsen’s Hannibal Lecter, the medieval-sounding contraption lays the foundation for one of The Eminem Show’s heaviest track. Driven by an unrelenting build, Em and Porter’s patience in sustaining the drop add additional weight to Slim’s verse. “When The Music Stops” feels particularly poignant as one of The Eminem Show’s darker tracks, a spiritual thematic successor to “The Way I Am.” Whether you appreciate Em’s musical instincts or not, nobody is crafting instrumentals quite like this.

LISTEN: D12 – When The Music Stops

21. XZIBIT FT EMINEM – DON’T APPROACH ME

Still gaining his foothold as a producer, one of Em’s formative tracks was “Don’t Approach Me” off Xzibit’s Restless. His fourth official collaboration with X, Em allowed his myriad frustrations to bleed into the beat. An explosive therapy session, Em’s somber beat included one of his eventual staples — the muted guitar riff — as well as his best imitation of Dr. Dre’s signature percussion. What makes this track stand out is its minimalist nature, complimenting the cadence and effortless flow of both emcees. The harmonic elements present arrive exactly when each verse calls for it, culminating in a cinematic synth string to drive home their sorrow. Also, bonus points for being one of Eminem’s first beats outside of his immediate Shady/Aftermath umbrella.

LISTEN: Xzibit Ft. Eminem – Don’t Approach Me

20. OBIE TRICE – AVERAGE MAN

In the run leading up to Obie Trice’s debut album Cheers, the musical chemistry between Em and his newest protege was still finding its footing. While tracks like “Rap Name” found Em implementing his own stylistic inclinations onto Obie, it was unclear how Em might soundtrack an entire project from the Detroit lyricist. Come “Average Man,” the introductory cut off Cheers, it soon became clear. The guitars came out in a badass arpeggio, encouraged by the recurring presence of gothic keystrokes. Though he never quite adopted a production tag, Em’s trademark strings make an appearance for added emphasis. Occasionally prone to cartoonish violence, “Average Man” revealed a maturity in Em’s production; some might even consider 2003 to be his beat-making prime.

LISTEN: Obie Trice – Average Man

19. NAS – THE CROSS

In a bonafide hip-hop tragedy, a rapped Nas and Eminem collaboration never manifested; it’s said that Nas reached out for Eminem to rap on “Daughters,” but Em felt he had already covered that ground. “The Cross” is the next best thing. Yet another co-sign from a GOAT tier lyricist, Nas stepped firmly from his comfort zone on the Em-laced God’s Son track. In some ways, it feels like a cousin to “Moment Of Clarity,” boasting a similar tempo and production. Fuelled by an ascending piano riff and emphatic brass hits, “The Cross” succeeds in giving Nas ample pockets to flow. Striking a tone of melancholic martyrdom, Em’s production brought out a powerful performance from Jones, one in which his frustrations were coaxed out and encouraged.

18. D12 – GIT UP

Though D12 World arrived during the height of Eminem’s battle with addiction, the album was not without its bright points. One such high would set the project ablaze, the introductory “Git Up.” A detion from Em’s expected percussive pattern, his chosen groove encourages unconventional flow-schemes; he himself opts for a robotic delivery, exposing the depth of his nursery-rhyme appreciation. Perhaps he designed the instrumental for that very reason. In true Shady fashion, the progression is dark, the atmosphere ominous. One of the hardest tracks he’s ever laid down, complete with his most intricately arranged percussion.

LISTEN: D12 – Git Up

17. D12 – AMERICAN PSYCHO

While Em’s hand for production was tried on The Marshall Mathers LP, he truly came into his own on 2001’s Devil’s Night. The first of two D12 albums found Eminem stepping into the producer’s chair; revisiting it showcases some of his musical habits being formed. Though many are quick to praise “Fight Music” as the opus, “American Psycho” edges it out through sheer atmosphere. A full-scale horrorcore masterpiece, the track finds Em laying down a chilling instrumental befitting of the macabre lyrical subject matter. A song that features Bizarre devouring a miscarried fetus needs an appropriate beat. Speaking with HNHH in 2015, Swift McVay went so far as to call “American Psycho” his favorite Devil’s Night track. “When I heard Em’s verse, Kon Artis, Biz’s verse, I went off the roof,” he reflects. “It gave me chills…That was one of the songs I couldn’t wait for the audience to hear.”

LISTEN: D12 – American Psycho

16. EMINEM – SUPERMAN

Though songs “for the ladies” have often been thrust upon many an unsuspecting major-label studio album, Eminem has always bucked the trend in his own unique way. As “Steve Berman” once cautioned on The Marshall Mathers LP, the bulk of Slim’s content centered around “homosexuals and Vicodin.” And yet here he was crafting a bawdy sex jam, boldly likening himself to the Man Of Steel leaping “tall hoes in a single bound.” Aside from subverting expectations on a character level, “Superman’s” beat remained entrenched in Em’s wheelhouse, with western-style guitar arpeggios and a triumphant main theme. Nor does the anthem stagnate, with new elements entering into the mix as the (nearly) six-minute opus soars to its smug and satisfied post-coital climax.

LISTEN: Eminem – Superman

15. EMINEM – WITHOUT ME

There are distinct advantages to self-producing. For starters, it allows an artist to add another layer of expression to their track, to enhance their desired sense of character. For Eminem circa 2002, coming off the back-to-back tandem of The Marshall Mathers LP and the grotesquely goofy Devil’s Night, “Without Me” was not without an aura of mystery. The first glance at a man ready to expand on his own narrative, The Eminem Show’s lead single served as Eminem’s informal introduction to his new sound. Cartoonish synthesizers ooze in a slick disco loop, embellished by occasional bursts of Rhodes riffs and sultry sax. On a rhythmic level, the drums and bass form a perfect marriage of danceability, keeping momentum with Em’s steroid-infused mischief bars. In some ways, it covers the same ground as “The Real Slim Shady,” albeit with less unease; on this go-around, Em isn’t shaking his fist at those above him, but rather spitting from the balcony on those below. While “Without Me” might not be your cup of tea, the sheer impact it would go on to have on his production moving forward reserves it a place within this list.

14. EMINEM – TILL I COLLAPSE

A solid introduction can often go unsung. It’s rare to see a hip-hop track begin with thirty-seconds of uninterrupted music. On “Till I Collapse,” Em’s main themes are foreshadowed in the opening segment, only to be later enhanced by militant percussion and chugging electric guitars. The brilliance of Em’s earlier guitar-based work is in its subtlety, eschewing rock-rap traditions by using them as complementary ingredients. Multi-instrumentalist Luis Resto deserves due praise, one of Em’s chief collaborators behind the boards. Together, they crafted The Eminem Show’s definitive track, a late-game adrenaline shot that has yet to wear off.

LISTEN: Eminem – Till I Collapse

13. EMINEM – LOSE YOURSELF

It’s impossible to deny the impact of “Lose Yourself.” Not only did the 8 Mile Soundtrack’s lead single net Slim an Oscar, it went on to galvanize his status into a full-blown cultural icon complete with parental approval. On a production level, “Lose Yourself” found Eminem exploring groundwork laid by “Sing For The Moment,” a clever reimagining of rock-and-roll’s expected elements and qualities. Rather than repurposing an Aerosmith sample, he, Jeff Bass, and Luis Resto crafted a tense and melancholic original arrangement, tailored to mirror the emotional ebb-and-flow of Em’s lyricism. Barely restrained electric guitars mirrored boiling blood, while soft piano flourishes captured vulnerability. Though it would be one of Em’s earliest forays into “rock-rap” territory, it would likewise be one of his most sophisticated.

LISTEN: Eminem – Lose Yourself

12. D12 – PURPLE PILLS

It’s difficult to talk about Eminem’s production without dipping a toe into the cartoonish. One has to wonder whether there would be a “Without Me” without D12’s lead single “Purple Pills.” Where the former is more overtly playful, there’s something sinister bubbling beneath the latter’s hallucinogenic synthesizers. Evocative of the laced drug trips the Dirty Dozen hazily recounts, “Purple Pills” goes so far as to implement a harmonica solo in its closing moments. And this isn’t a mere fragment – it’s a full-blown minute of pure harmonica bliss. Shout out to Ray Gale for that one. Before you cry afoul that “Purple Pills” was placed higher than “Lose Yourself,” consider the circumstances surrounding its release. Not only did he have to spark immediate public interest in his loyal crew, but he also had to provide a musical canvas befitting of their outlandish modus operandi. And damned if the resulting acid-trip through Dali’s Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening didn’t succeed in nailing that rare bird double homicide.

LISTEN: D12 – Purple Pills

11. 50 CENT – I’M SUPPOSED TO DIE TONIGHT

50 Cent has always been a threatening force on wax. A dominant presence in gangster rap, prone to doling out beatings and drawing the firearm without remorse. When he teamed up with Eminem, however, his proclivities toward violence developed an additional layer. Spurred by Em’s inclinations toward the haunting, a quality that he shares with mentor Dr. Dre, Fif found himself veering into existential territory going so far as to deem himself “Satan’s Angel” on “I’m Supposed To Die Tonight.” Urgent despite its dirge-like pace, this early The Massacre highlight is tense enough to maintain chills for its duration. Another instance in which Em takes nursery rhyme qualities and injects them with a syringe of nightmare fuel.

10. 2PAC & THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G – RUNNIN (DYING TO LIVE)

Before winning over Afeni Shakur with a handwritten request to produce her son’s posthumous album Loyal To Tha Game, Eminem laid the backdrop for a collaboration between 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. Aside from the legendary pedigree, “Runnin” manages to sound sonically appropriate to both artists, neither of whom strayed from darker music. A pitched up flip of Edgar Winter’s “Dying To Live” anchors the song with a vain sense of hope, only to be subsequently eroded by Em’s goonish strings. The influence of Dr. Dre bleeds through “Runnin,” though Eminem’s general ear for chord progressions and preferred sounds ground him in his own distinct realm.

LISTEN: 2Pac & The Notorious B.I.G. – Runnin (Dyin To Live)

9. EMINEM, OBIE TRICE, & DMX – GO TO SLEEP

Like Dre, the man from which he likely learned several tricks of the trade, Em has never shied away from the horror genre. And while some of his earlier material found him donning the killer’s overalls, his anger would occasionally run beyond the conceptual. That would prove the case on “Go To Sleep,” a collaboration with DMX and Obie Trice penned in the midst of the Ja Rule & Benzino feud. It’s no wonder he pulled out medieval instruments for the torture session; both church organs and the harpsichord are dusted off. The end result was one of Em’s most aggressive beats, a quality reflected in his and X’s rabid performances; Obie was always content to play the restraint, calculated killer with the ridiculous vocabulary.

LISTEN: Eminem, Obie Trice, & DMX – Go To Sleep

8. JAY-Z – MOMENT OF CLARITY

“I made beats for Jay-Z for free, page me,” flexed Eminem, on a freestyle circa 2003. And that he did, with “Moment Of Clarity” earning a spot on Jay’s retirement lap The Black Album. An extra-special feat, considering that Jay was tailoring the entire project around the work of his favorite producers. The prestige alone earns “Moment” a spot on this list, especially given the infrequency with which Em blesses outsiders; the pedigree of those seeking his production, from Redman, Nas, and Jay, should inherently put credit on his name. In essence, “Moment Of Clarity” features a straightforward synth riff and a varied take on boom-bap drums. It’s the sounds themselves that reveal Em’s meticulous ear, transforming something simple into something memorable.

7. EMINEM – MOCKINGBIRD

Where Em’s affinity for lullabies is generally used in the name of evil, “Mockingbird” marks a detion from the expected. Marking the emotional centerpiece of Encore, Em’s homage to his daughter Hailie Jade makes for a compelling journey even without the lyrics. Driven by a lovely piano line and the occasional string section, “Mockingbird” pulls at the heartstrings without diving into sentimentality. Once again, Eminem and Luis Resto strike gold with simplicity, crafting a strong melody and allowing it to paint a stirring portrait. At once sad and regretful, loving and triumphant, Em’s reflection on fatherhood is one of the most revealing tracks of his career.

LISTEN: Eminem – Mockingbird

6. LLOYD BANKS – TILL THE END

Though never officially signed to Shady, Eminem’s touch was certainly felt on Lloyd Banks’ debut The Hunger For More. Producing three of the albums highlight tracks, Em made sure to bless Banks with one of the most haunting beats of his career. To make a distinction, “Till The End” resonates through wistfulness rather than menace. The air of tragedy having struck, the fallout that only comes with time. A soft, lullaby-esque piano riff is the main backdrop, a staple of Eminem and Luis Resto’s modus operandi. Subtly arranged with hints of underlying trauma, “Till The End” is a cinematic addition to Em’s production discography.

LISTEN: Lloyd Banks – Till The End

5. EMINEM – THE WAY I AM

A monumental moment in Eminem’s journey behind the boards, “The Way I Am” was the first beat he ever crafted on his lonesome. Em has always thrived producing for himself; it allows him to best express his highly conceptual songs, capturing whatever emotion might be the driving force. Here, it’s none other than sheer frustration, appropriately mirrored by a maddening loop of delayed piano. Hallmarks of Eminem’s ever-building toolkit are present: slightly overdriven guitars, minor-key riffs, shuffling hi-hats, and subtle gothic accouterments. A simple arrangement in theory, “The Way I Am” succeeds as a direct reflection of a man at his most embroiled. Not to mention, it marked his introduction into the game as a multitalented force, which in itself gives this Marshall Mathers LP highlight extra gravitas.

4. OBIE TRICE, LLOYD BANKS, EMINEM & 50 CENT – WE ALL DIE ONE DAY

One must envy a fly on the wall in this particular studio session. A Shady Records posse cut fueled by piss and vinegar, violent cockiness, and the swagger of those sitting atop the rap game, “We All Die One Day” may very well be the hardest track in Eminem’s discography, period. Encapsulating both their disdain for their opponents and their pride in their own dominance, Em, G-Unit, and Obie Trice absolutely obliterate a merciless beat from the Shady ringleader. As he is wont to do, Em keeps his percussion relatively simple, kicking up the intensity with a deep, slightly distorted synthesizer. The main melody unfolds with a descending minor scale reaching its natural conclusion, almost playful in its simplicity. Yet there are no games being played here. This beat encourages aggression from all participants, who are happy to oblige.

3. EMINEM – STAN

One of the earliest Eminem beats to incorporate a sample, the 45 King collaboration “Stan” remains one of Slim’s most enduring musical moments. A detion from his sound of the time, acoustic guitar chords and a bittersweet bassline unite, only hinting at the depravity to come. Those familiar with the Dido song from which the hook is taken might recognize her track’s progression into a major key lift. Em and the 45 King swerve that direction entirely. There’s something self-fulfilling about the “Stan” instrumental; a progression that doesn’t quite commit to melancholy, keeping the fainted hint of optimism alive. The concept of an obsessive fan driven to madness might have teetered on comedic in a lesser writer’s hands. Yet thanks to Slim and King’s masterfully crafted beat, the tragic story is imbued with the power it deserves.

2. 50 CENT & EMINEM – PATIENTLY WAITING

“Patiently Waiting” is the embodiment of the killer from Relapse tiptoeing to your doorstep. Where pizzicato strings can sound almost whimsical in the right hands, Em flips them on their heads, creating an atmosphere of simmering tension closer to the opening dissonance of a horror movie. A recurring, deeper element reminiscent of a muted guitar keeps the pace lively, as occasional slow-burning synth strings creep into the mix. Prior to its release, the sample size of 50 Cent’s Eminem-laced songs remained too small to draw any conclusions. After “Patiently Waiting,” however, immediate musical chemistry was forged. With many still touting Get Rich Or Die Tryin as a classic, it’s likely they’d have much to say about its legendary third track.

1. JAY-Z & EMINEM – RENEGADE

Curiously enough, Jay-Z’s Blueprint did not include a single guest appearance, save for a lone contribution from Slim Shady. Emerging at a time in which Em was public enemy number one, “Renegade” came equipped with an inherent sense of urgency. At the helm were Em and frequent Shady collaborator DJ Head, who conjured up a haunting beat complete with several signature staples: gothic choirs, minor-key piano arpeggios, a slick bassline. A noted departure from Blueprint’s sonic aesthetic thus far, “Renegade” proved to be new territory for the Jigga Man, who ably bodied the beat. More importantly, it made for the first collaboration between the rappers, a relationship that would ultimately secure Marshall a placement on Jay’s exclusive “retirement” send-off.

French Montana Declares Victory After Posting 50 Cent & Eminem Dubious "Smooch"

French Montana revels in the benefits of a Photoshop class well-spent.

It’s not even noon EST and the antics have already reached critical mass. It all started after 50 Cent decided to start picking on French Montana over a Bugatti’s mileage, a petty feud that soon escalated into a full-fledged Instagram war. This morning, French decided to retaliate with what can only be described as “the kiss of death,” which is to say, photoshopping two men into a passionate embrace. By the time 50 Cent logged onto IG to plug #lecheminduroi,” it was already too late. An edited image of himself kissing his friend and former label boss Eminem was making the rounds.

It didn’t matter that the picture originally featured 50 Cent kissing Nicole Scherzinger of The Pussycat Dolls. The narrative steamrolled forward, a hip-hop variant of Star-crossed lovers. Of course, many immediately saw through the ruse, opting to stand loyal to Fif and Eminem‘s platonic partnership. Yet others found the exchange particularly hilarious, especially considering Fif’s own use of cyberbully-esque Photoshops. Lest we forget, the nude “Busta Rhymes” forever branded into the depths of our psyches.

With 50 having yet to respond, French took a moment to declare victory over his opponent with another age-old strategy: kill em’ with kindness. Rapping along to Fif’s “How We Do” verse, French can barely contain his glee. Check out his celebratory antics below, and weigh in — did French Montana prove the chosen one after all? Or did he make a fatal mistake by not only poking one bear, but dragging another, deadlier bear into the mix?

French Montana Wrecks 50 Cent With Alleged Photo Of Him Kissing Eminem

No more Mr Nice Guy.

After taking a few days off to celebrate the New Year, 50 Cent and French Montana are back at each other’s throats. Closing out the decade, 50 Cent managed to find himself a new target, going after French Montana after the rapper escaped a terrifying hospital stay in the ICU, copping himself a Bugatti Veyron to celebrate life. Considering he also joined the Bugatti club this holiday season, 50 Cent went ahead and clowned his fellow New York star for allegedly buying an older model of the vehicle. Then, he dug deep and seemingly found loan paperwork on the whip, alleging that he’ll be paying it off over the next sixty months. French Montana decided to find his own ammo on Fif, unearthing an old photo that appears to show the rapper and Eminem engaging in a lip-locked moment.

“BACK TO BACK AGAINNNNN WHOS THAT 59,” yelled Montana in his caption, sharing the photo on his social media channels. “COULDNT EVEN GET A BUGGATTI AFTER THAT DINOSAUR, look at my dawg Kay slay face lol.”

French is referring to DJ Kay Slay, who stands in the corner of the shot looking bothered by the alleged embrace happening right next to him. The two men in the picture are unidentified and seen from the side so it’s not certain that it’s actually Em and Fif. However, you can’t deny that the two men look like the rap legends. The era makes sense too.

Where do you see this heading next?

Mariah Carey’s Twitter Hacked: "Eminem Can Still Hold This *****"

More than 50 tweets were published.

Mariah Carey's Twitter has been hacked. Over 50 tweets were published before the page was temporarily shut down and the tweets were deleted. Still, the damage was done. At 6:30 PM ET, Mariah Carey's account tweeted "Eminem can still hold this pu**y.." The hackers were obviously trying to stir the Eminem/Mariah Carey/Nick Cannon pot. Not too long after the first tweet, the hackers sent out another Eminem targetted message. "Eminem has a little penis" the account tweeted. After the initial jabs at the rapper, the hackers got bolder and began spewing out all types of garbage.

"As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we locked the compromised account and are currently investigating the situation," a Twitter spokesperson told USA Today. Several of the hacked tweets told users to follow third-party accounts and some posts also referenced the hacking group Chuckling Squad. The Chucking Squad also took credit for hacking Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey's account back in the Summer of 2019. "He was a member of Chuckling Squad but not anymore," said a Chuckling Squad leader who goes by the name Debug. "He was an active member for us by providing celebs/public figure [phone] numbers and helped us hack them."

Megan Thee Stallion’s attorneys hit back at “sensationalist” work harassment lawsuit

Megan Thee Stallion‘s attorneys have responded to the “sensationalist” work harassment lawsuit filed against her last month.

Back in April, camera man Emilio Garcia accused Thee Stallion – real name Megan Pete – and her management Roc Nation of harassment and creating a hostile work environment. He claimed that the Houston rapper had sex in a car in front of him while touring in Spain in 2022 and made “sexual and fat-shaming comments” towards him.

Garcia added that he believes Thee Stallion and Roc Nation later retaliated against him by reducing his work and eventually terminating him.

At the time, Pete’s Pete’s attorneys Mari Henderson and Alex Spiro said in a statement: “This is an employment claim for money – with no sexual harassment claim filed and with salacious accusations to attempt to embarrass her. We will deal with this in court.”

In a report released by Billboard, Megan’s lawyers filed their response yesterday (May 30). Henderson and Spiro said Garcia’s lawsuit “consists almost entirely of falsehoods, misrepresentations of fact, and outlandish claims that have no basis in fact or law and no merit.”

Spiro went on to call the plaintiff “a con artist who is manipulating the judicial system to act as his publicist and bullhorn in a desperate attempt to boost his failed singing career while trying to tear down the successful career of Megan Thee Stallion.”

Later in the report, Spiro alleged the former contractor was terminated after he repeatedly “falsified his invoices and overcharged Ms. Pete for services he never completed.”

The lawyers added: “Angry at the loss of this high-profile gig and his exile from the inner circles of stardom, [the] plaintiff filed a factually and legally frivolous Complaint.

“Plaintiff took a run-of-the-mill wage and labor dispute and trumped up his frivolous claims with sensationalist false allegations of sex, debauchery, and workplace harassment for the sole purpose of creating a media firestorm to tarnish the career and reputation of Ms. Pete.”

Thee Stallion’s attorneys also argued that the case was filed in entirely the wrong place and are now seeking to have it moved to federal court. They said the case has “absolutely no connection to California state court” – citing the fact that Garcia lives in Texas and Thee Stallion lives in Florida.

“Plaintiff was more concerned with staging his lawsuit in an improper forum than accurately pleading the facts underlying his claims,” Henderson and Spiro wrote.

Billboard obtained a statement from Garcia’s attorney Ron Zambrano, who said Megan never raised any issues about him falsifying invoices or overcharging. They called the response filing “another attempt by another celebrity to shame the victim and shift blame from their own abhorrent behavior.”

“Her attorneys are correct, our client is angry, but not by being so-called exiled ‘from the inner circles of stardom’,” Zambrano said. “He’s angry because of how he was treated. Megan Thee Stallion broke the law. Period. No one is lying here but her.”

NME has reached out to Megan Thee Stallion’s representatives to comment on the ongoing lawsuit.

50 Cent says he’s “practicing abstinence” in 2024

50 Cent has announced that he is “practicing abstinence” in 2024 through a glitzy new post on Instagram.

Yesterday (January 9), the ‘In Da Club’ rapper took to Instagram to comment on his plans for the new year. In a caption attached to a picture depicting him dressed in a dapper suit, smoking a cigar beside a drink of whiskey on a table, 50 Cent commented that he has a “new idea so big”, he has no time to be distracted.

“I’m practicing abstinence, I have been meditating and focusing on my goals,” he wrote. “I hope this New Year helps you excel to the next level.” He capped off the post by tagging his brands, Branson Cognac and Le Chemin du Roi.

Eight hours later, he posted another picture of himself holding a bottle of Branson Cognac, attached to a caption which also tagged his brands, suggesting that his “new idea” may be related to his alcohol endeavours.

50 Cent has spent the second half of 2023 travelling on his ‘The Final Lap’ world tour, which celebrated the 20-year anniversary of his breakout 2003 debut album, ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’. The first leg of the tour saw him performing throughout North America with support from Busta Rhymes, and concluded at Detroit, Michigan’s Pine Knob Music Theatre in September. A week later, the rapper took the tour to Europe, before undertaking a series of UK dates in November.

His UK tour included a date at Manchester’s AO Arena, a performance which earned a four-star review from NME. Writer Gary Ryan highlighted the rapper’s continued excellence, writing: “As confetti spunks into the crowd during a joyous ‘In Da Club’, prompting the kind of audience moves flaunted at every kids’ birthday bash, Fiddy has proved that, while music has been parked for the last decade, he still has the magnetism to demonstrate why he was such a big deal in the first place.”

During his concert in Los Angeles, 50 Cent was accused of intentionally hurling a malfunctioning microphone at Power 106 deejay Bryhana Monegain. On his behalf, his lawyer denied that he would “never intentionally strike anyone with a microphone”. On a lighter note, the rapper brought out Eminem for ‘Patiently Waiting’ and ‘Crack A Bottle’ during his final North American tour date in Detroit.

Most recently, 50 Cent was reportedly working on a documentary about the sexual assault allegations levelled against his long-time rival, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. Combs was first subjected to allegations by his ex-girlfriend, R&B singer Cassie in November, before settling the lawsuit one day after it was formally filed.

Suge Knight criticises Eazy-E’s widow for allegedly ruining billion-dollar Dr Dre deal

Suge Knight has called out Eazy-E‘s widow for allegedly ending a “billion-dollar” lifetime deal where she’d earn money from Dr Dre‘s every career move.

The former Death Row Records owner spoke about the moment on the most recent episode of his podcast Collect Call With Suge Knight.

Knight explained that he made a deal with Eazy-E “where he gets a dollar off of anything that Dre does”. He continued: “In other words, if he do a movie, if he do a beat, if he promote some type of merchandise, if he do a commercial, if he produce — off of his part, [Eazy] gets a dollar.”

[embedded content]

The pivotal hip-hop figure estimated that the deal would have been worth a billion dollars if still in place, following Eazy-E’s death in 1995 of pneumonia and HIV/AIDS. Since the offer, ‘The Chronic’ rapper launched his premium headphones brand Beats By Dre (which was sold to Apple for $3 billion (£2,394,540,000) in 2014), as well as producing albums for Eminem and 50 Cent, and releasing his second and third solo albums, ‘2001‘ and ‘Compton‘.

When Eazy-E died, the rapper’s widow Tomica Woods-Wright took over his estate. Knight claimed that Interscope Records – which Dre’s Aftermath Records is a subsidiary of – made Woods-Wright an offer that effectively cheated her out of a 10-figure payout.

“Tomica met with Interscope,” he began, “and Interscope said, ‘Hey, why you want to get a dollar off of everything Dre does? Me and you could do business later on. Sign off and just let Dre out of it. We’re gonna do business later.’

“She signed off. They ain’t did no business with that bitch later. And guess what? That fucked Eazy’s kids, his momma, at the time his father was still living. It’s fucked his family.”

Tomica Woods-Wright, the owner and CEO of Ruth less Records and a record producer and entrepreneur, has yet to respond to Knight’s claims.

Eazy previously spoke about the deal a 1993 appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show when he said: “Basically, I had Dre signed as [an] exclusive producer and an exclusive artist. So, when Dre tried to make his deal over at Interscope, I was included for the next six years.”

The late NWA rapper also alluded to this deal on the 1993 diss track ‘Real Muthaphuckkin G’s’: “‘Damn, E, they tried to fade you on Dre Day’/ But Dre Day only meant Eazy’s payday.”

[embedded content]

Knight is currently serving a 28-year-long sentence in jail for pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter in a fatal 2015 hit-and-run. His new podcast – launched last month – is done over the phone while he serves time.

Recently, Knight told TMZ he “won’t testify” for anyone in the Tupac murder case. He said this after Duane “Keefe D” Davis was arrested for his connection to the fatal shooting of the Death Row Records rapper on September 7, 1996. On November 2, Davis pled not guilty to one count of open murder with use of a deadly weapon with a gang enhancement.

In other news, Tupac‘s brother Mopreme said that the ‘California Love’ rapper considered signing with Bad Boy Records before he did so with Death Row Records. The two labels eventually became rivals during Tupac and Notorious B.I.G‘s infamous feud in the ’90s.

Watch Pete Davidson’s no-holds-barred ‘SNL’ ‘Barbie’ spoof ‘I’m Just Pete’

Pete Davidson sang in a Barbie spoof sketch on Saturday Night Live‘s season premiere addressing the comedian’s recent controversies – watch the clip below.

The SNL alumni returned to Studio 8H to host the first episode of the show’s 49th season last night (October 14). Davidson appeared in a spoof remake of ‘I’m Just Ken’ from the Barbie movie (a scene which was nearly cut from the original film).

Singing morosely from a plastic-pink Barbie dreamhouse littered with bongs and drinks, Davidson began by referencing the lukewarm reception to his new show Bupkis: “No one cares about the work I do,” he crooned. “I made a show with Joe Pesci, too / And no one streamed it but my mom”

Davidson also joked about his feud with Kanye West. “People online still call me Skete / Because of a guy whose name I can’t say legally” he sang, as a photo of the rapper flashed momentarily.

There were also lyrics that nodded to Davidson’s rehab stints, his “Big Dick Energy”, purchasing a boat whilst stoned with fellow cast member Colin Jost, and his tumultuous romances (“my dating life is not discreet”, he admitted).

[embedded content]

The sketch concluded with the comedian in a hot-pink car with cast member Chloe Fineman as they crashed into the dreamhouse. That referenced his car crash with Chase Sui Wonders earlier this March, for which he was sentenced to 50 hours of community service and an 18-month diversion programme.

Davidson announced his retirement from SNL last year, having performed on the show for seven years. To say goodbye, Eminem appeared in one of the comedian’s final sketches, jokingly criticising Davidson’s impersonation of him. Davidson had impersonated the Detroit rapper a total of three times throughout his tenure at SNL, including a ‘Stan’ parody that also featured the rapper.

Since leaving SNL, Davidson has acted in films such as Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3, Fast X and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

50 Cent mic toss audio reveals odd exchange with 911 dispatcher

The audio from the 911 call made on the day 50 Cent threw a microphone at a woman in the audience at a recent gig has been released.

The incident took place at a show in Los Angeles on August 30 and happened when the rapper appeared to be frustrated after suffering a succession of failing mics. Although he didn’t deny throwing the object, his lawyer Scott Leemon told TMZ that he “would never intentionally strike anyone with a microphone”.

The victim was Power 106 radio host Bryhana Monegain, who alleged to law enforcement that 50 Cent looked directly at her before throwing the mic and so he knew that she was there. She was taken to hospital to be treated for a laceration on her head.

TMZ has now obtained a recording of the 911 call, where the dispatcher seemed shocked that someone suffered what the caller described as “blunt force trauma” from a microphone, even to the point that he started laughing.

After the dispatcher finishes laughing, he asks “Is she currently awake?” When told that the victim remained conscious, the dispatcher asked: “Who’s performing tonight?”

It follows a summer spate of fans hurling objects at artists. One of the most dangerous cases occurred in June when pop star Bebe Rexha was seen falling to her knees after a mobile phone struck her in the face.

The incident left the singer needing stitches above her eye and it was later reported that the concertgoer who threw the device did so because he thought “it would be funny”.

Drake was also the target of items thrown from the crowd. In July he was hit by an object while on stage in Chicago during the opening night of his ‘All A Blur Tour’ with 21 SavageThe object, which hit him in the arm during the performance, turned out to be a mobile phone although he didn’t comment on the incident during the show.

In July Cardi B allegedly flipped the trend when she threw a microphone towards a fan. The battery case that was launched, although which did not name the rapper, was dropped last month.

Meanwhile, in other 50 Cent news, Eminem made a surprise appearance at his “best friend’s show in Detroit earlier this week, where he teamed up with the rapper to perform ‘Patiently Waiting’ and ‘Crack A Bottle’.

Duran Duran share new single ‘Black Moonlight’ featuring Nile Rodgers and Andy Taylor

Duran Duran have shared their latest single, ‘Black Moonlight’ which features Nile Rodgers and former bandmate Andy Taylor.

‘Black Moonlight’ is the second of three original tracks the band have created for their upcoming Halloween-inspired, mostly covers album ‘Danse Macabre‘. The track sees them reunite with Rodgers, who is their longtime friend and frequent collaborator. The Chic co-founder previously produced Duran Duran’s 1986 LP ‘Notorious’. The track follows the album’s lead single of the same name.

Speaking about ‘Black Moonlight’ in a press release, keyboardist Nick Rhodes said: “Nile Rogers is a force of nature. When we get into a room, we start playing, and magic happens. Nile always says that CHIC is his first band, and Duran Duran is his second. Thematically, I personally prefer the moon to the sun. Simon took the idea and ran with it.”

[embedded content]

The band’s frontman, Simon Le Bon, added: “‘Black Moonlight’ is this classic Duran Duran-Nile Rodgers collaboration. When Nile started playing his guitar in the studio, he really inspired everyone with his riff, and the song just kind of wrote itself.”

Former Duran Duran guitarist, Andy Taylor, is also featured on the track. He recently revealed that the reason he quit Duran Duran was due to “creative” reasons, and was “not personal”.

Taylor played with Duran Duran on-and-off between 1980 and 2006, and was set to reunite with them last year when they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, but a setback in his treatment for stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer forced him to miss the occasion.

‘Danse Macabre’ is set for release on October 27 on Tape Modern via BMG. It will feature a mix of new original songs, reworkings of songs from the band’s catalogue and covers. Pre-order the LP here.

Some of the covers on the LP include Billie Eilish’s ‘Bury A Friend’, Talking Heads’ ‘Psycho Killer’ (featuring Måneskin bassist Victoria De Angelis), The Rolling Stones‘ ‘Paint It Black’, The Specials‘ ‘Ghost Town’, Siouxsie and the Banshees’ ‘Spellbound’ and Cerrone’s ‘Supernature’.

Speaking of the album, Rhodes shared: “The idea was born out of a show we played in Las Vegas on October 31st, 2022. We had decided to seize the moment to create a unique, special event…the temptation of using glorious gothic visuals set to a dark soundtrack of horror and humour was simply irresistible.”

He continued:“That evening inspired us to explore further and to make an album, using Halloween as the key theme. The record metamorphosed through a pure, organic process, and not only was it made faster than anything since our debut album, it has also resulted in something none of us could have ever predicted.

“Emotion, mood, style and attitude have always been at the heart of Duran Duran’s DNA, we search for light in the darkness and darkness in the light, and I feel we have somehow managed to capture the essence of all of that in this project.”

Some songs I might’ve sat on from the last project and reworked them to fit my current mood and sound and some were just new material altogether.”

Speaking of the creative process of the LP, Lowe admits that he bared his heart out on this new record. “I wanted to go for a more personal experience, even though the first few tracks are about me, I flip it and want to make it about the listener. I want this to serve as a soundtrack throughout your day,” says the artist.

He also adds, “There are skits on there that represent someone going through their day, as if my music is just so happening to play around you in these moments. Pulling up with the homies to cruise and chill? I got you. Going to the club outside of town? Got you. Seeing that one ex in said club or any uptempo environment? Yeah, got something for you as well.”

Influenced by Eminem, Kanye, Jay-Z, The Neptunes, Biggie, PAC, Busta Rhymes, Raheem The Dream, DMX, Lil Wayne, Sade, and Johnnie Taylor, PM Lowe aims high and aspires to create a lasting impression with his music.

“I feel like the next thing I do, if I was to work with Hit-Boy on the next thing I do, I think that we might do something that is going to be magical,” the rapper said.

“I think what we have is magic. And I think the next thing we do would have to be the next page. And that, to me, excites me, that possibility.” He also called Hit-Boy his “Quincy Jones”.

Elsewhere on ‘Magic’, the rapper-producer pair confirmed that a ‘King’s Disease III’ album would be dropping at some point, with Nas rapping the news on the track ‘Ugly’ and Hit-Boy sharing the lyrics on Twitter.

In a five-star review of ‘King’s Disease II’, NME‘s Will Lavin wrote: “This dizzying victory lap boasts effervescent moments from Eminem and Lauryn Hill, but even they’re overshadowed by the main man’s emotional candour.”

Eurythmics have reunited for a live performance at this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, coinciding with the duo’s induction.

The group — composed of frontwoman Annie Lennox and instrumentalist Dave Stewart — were among the 2022 inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where they joined a class that also included Eminem, Dolly Parton and Lionel Richie. The pair celebrated their induction with a performance at the Los Angeles ceremony on Saturday (November 5th), where they were introduced by U2 guitarist The Edge.

Eurythmics treated audiences to three songs from their decades-spanning career, beginning with ‘Would I Lie to You?’ from the their 1985 album ‘Be Yourself Tonight’. They then performed the 1986 track ‘Missionary Man’ before closing with their breakout hit, ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)’ from the titular 1983 album.

The performance marked just one of a handful of Eurythmics’ onstage reunions since their original disbandment in 1990. Earlier this year, they performed a live duet of ‘Here Comes the Rain Again’ at their induction to the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Prior to that, they appeared together at a 2019 beneift concert hosted by Sting, and featured as guests on the 2014 CBS television special The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the Beatles.

Eurythmics last reunited in the studio for their eighth and final album ‘Peace’, which arrived in 1999 alongside a three-month tour. After that, Lennox and Stewart resumed their solo careers, which have continued to this day. Most recently, Lennox performed at a COVID-19 fundraiser for India. Stewart, meanwhile, teamed up Stevie Nicks last month for the song ‘Face To Face’, which featured on the tracklist of his Ukraine relief album ‘Collaborate For Peace’.

Duran Duran, Carly Simon and Pat Benatar were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at this year’s event. The ceremony saw Eminem perform ‘Sing For The Moment’ with Steven Tyler of Aerosmith (whose ‘Dream On’ was sampled on the Eminem hit), and ‘Stan’ alongside Ed Sheeran. Richie also took to the stage for a rendition of The Commodores’ ‘Easy’ with Dave Grohl, while Parton performed ‘Jolene’ with Judas Priest‘s Rob Halford.

As part of Saturday’s ceremony in Los Angeles, the class of 2022 were inducted to the prestigious club, which saw alongside Eminem, Duran Duran, Dolly Parton and more also honoured.

During the ceremony, Richie played a three-song set including renditions of ‘Hello’ and ‘All Night Long’. At the end of the medley, he played his version of The Commodores’ hit ‘Easy’, which saw him joined by Grohl on guitar.

Elsewhere at the ceremony, Carly Simon was also inducted, with Olivia Rodrigo covering her song ‘You’re So Vain’ after Simon was unable to attend the ceremony.

Eminem also performed with Ed Sheeran and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler ahead of his induction. Performing six of his biggest hits, starting with ‘My Name Is’ and ‘Rap God’, Marshall Mathers was then joined by Tyler for ‘Sing For The Moment’ (which samples Aerosmith’s ‘Dream On’) before Sheeran joined him to sing Dido’s parts in ‘Stan’. He rounded out the performance with ‘Forever’ and ‘Not Afraid’.

Another act to be inducted were Judas Priest, who performed a three-song set on the night in which they reunited with former guitarist K.K. Downing and drummer and ex-member Les Binks.

Frontman Rob Halford then returned to the stage to perform ‘Jolene’ with Dolly Parton as part of her performance. “I’m a rock star now!” Parton said during her acceptance speech (via Rolling Stone), adding: “This is a very special night for me. I’m sure a lot of you knew that back when they said they were gonna put me in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I didn’t feel like I had done enough to deserve that. And I didn’t understand at the time that it’s about more than that. But I’m just so honoured and so proud to be here tonight.”

The singer was inducted into the prodigious class alongside Eminem, Duran Duran, Lionel Richie and more at the Saturday night ceremony in Los Angeles.

Earlier this year, Parton made headlines when she was nominated for the Hall Of Fame, but asked to be taken out of consideration for the honour. In her explanation, Parton said that the nomination, which she eventually admitted she would accept if voted in, had “inspired me to put out a hopefully great rock ‘n’ roll album at some point in the future, which I have always wanted to do!”

Watch the ‘Jolene’ performance below.

During his acceptance speech, Eminem claimed he shouldn’t be at the ceremony, firstly because he’s a rapper and “this is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame” and secondly, because he almost died of a drug overdose in 2007.

He then went on to list a whole host of rappers who influenced him over the years including Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., De La Soul, Cypress Hill, Ice Cube, LL Cool J and Snoop Dogg.

Duran Duran’s Andy Taylor misses Hall Of Fame ceremony due to cancer treatment

Former Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor was forced to miss the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame ceremony due to ongoing treatment for stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer.

  • READ MORE: The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has turned into a museum. Time for change

Duran Duran were among those inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame last night (November 5) and former guitarist Taylor was due to reunite onstage with the band for the first time in 17 years.

Taylor joined the band in 1980 and left in 1986. He then rejoined in 2001 and played guitar on 2004’s ‘Astronaut’ before leaving again in 2006.

Asked about Duran Duran’s performance at the ceremony earlier this year, vocalist Simon Le Bon said “I’ve already had a definite yes from Andy. He’s definitely up for it,” before saying how “we didn’t have so-called ‘acrimonious splits.’ It was gentlemanly and it was understood.”

However, after performing a medley of Duran Duran classics including ‘Hungry Like The Wolf’ and ‘Girls On Film’ at the ceremony, Le Bon explained how “four years ago, Andy was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer,” before reading a letter from Taylor.

“Although my current condition is not immediately life threatening there is no cure,” said the letter. “Recently I was doing okay after some very sophisticated life extending treatment, that was until a week or so ago when I suffered a setback.”

Taylor went on to say that despite the exceptional efforts of his team of doctors, flying from his home in Ibiza to the ceremony in Los Angeles “would be pushing my boundaries.”

“However, none of this needs to or should detract from what this band (with or without me) has achieved and sustained for 44 years,” Taylor continued. “We’ve had a privileged life, we were a bit naughty but really nice, a bit shirty but very well dressed, a bit full of ourselves, because we had a lot to give, but as I’ve said many times, when you feel that collective, instinctive, kindred spirit of creativity mixed with ambition, armed with an über cool bunch of fans, well what could possibly go wrong?”

The letter continued: “I’m truly sorry and massively disappointed I couldn’t make it. Let there be no doubt I was stoked about the whole thing, even bought a new guitar with the essential whammy! I’m so very proud of these four brothers; I’m amazed at their durability, and I’m overjoyed at accepting this award. I often doubted the day would come. I’m sure as hell glad I’m around to see the day.”

Duran Duran were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame alongside Carly Simon, Eminem, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Eurythmics Judas Priest and Pat Benatar.

During the induction ceremony, Olivia Rodrigo covered Carly Simon’s ‘You’re So Vain’ after the singer was unable to attend the event, while Eminem performed with both Ed Sheeran and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler before paying his respects to his “teachers” of hip-hop.

Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner says ‘The Car’ songs are ripe to “hang out in a stadium”

Arctic Monkeys‘ songs from their new album ‘The Car‘ are ripe to “hang out in a stadium”, singer and guitarist Alex Turner has said.

In this week’s Big Read cover interview with NME Turner addressed the fact that his band are playing a full stadium tour across the UK for the first time ever next summer, saying the time didn’t feel right before.

“It wouldn’t have made sense for us to play stadiums before this album,” Turner said, “and I don’t think we were mentally ready for it up until now.”

He added: “I don’t want to get ahead of myself and say that some of our songs ‘belong’ in a stadium, but they could definitely hang out in a stadium.”

Among the Monkeys’ UK stadium shows are a huge hometown concerts in Sheffield at Hillsborough Park.

Turner added that he’s confident that their seventh album, which NME praised in a five-star review as a “swashbuckling, strings-fuelled epic”, will translate live.

He went on to liken songs on ‘The Car’ to the splendour of ‘A Certain Romance’, a song from from their debut album, 2006’s ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not‘.

“I remember when we were recording ‘A Certain Romance’ and having a conversation with the producer about the final guitar solo,” Turner said. “There’s something that happens at the end of that track where we break some rules in a single moment. We focused on the [emotional] effect of the instrumentals over the words – and I feel like we’ve been trying to do that again and again since then.”

Elsewhere in the interview Turner discussed the band’s 2007 song, ‘505’, finding “a new life” among younger fans.

The track, which appears on the band’s second album ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’, recently enjoyed viral success on TikTok. It’s also the third most popular Monkeys tune on Spotify at the time of writing (behind ‘I Wanna Be Yours’ and ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ from 2013’s ‘AM’).

Earlier this year ‘505’ surpassed hits by Eminem and Coldplay, clocking in an average of 1.7million plays a month on Spotify alone. The song has since beaten its 2007 peak on the UK singles chart (via the Official Charts Company).

‘505’ is currently used as the main set closer at Arctic Monkeys’ live gigs, and prompts a particularly passionate response from young crowd members – as do other staple ‘AM’ cuts.

Turner said it was “genuinely moving” to witness such a reaction, but admitted he’s somewhat bemused by the ‘505’ revival.

“Without having ‘505’ at the end of our shows for a few years around 2008, I’m not sure if it would have found the new life it has now,” he added.

“I hope that doesn’t sound like I’m taking credit [for the revival] – even if it wasn’t totally unexpected, the attention around [‘505’] is really quite special.”

Arctic Monkeys to headline Rock Werchter 2023 the week after Glastonbury

Arctic Monkeys have announced they will be headlining next year’s Rock Werchter Festival.

  • READ MORE: Arctic Monkeys – ‘The Car’ review: a swashbuckling, strings-fuelled epic

The Sheffield quartet will top the bill on the final day of the Belgian music festival, which will be taking place from Thursday, June 29 to Sunday, July 2, 2023. Last week, it was announced that Stromae would be headlining the first day of the event. Fans can register for tickets via the festival’s presale.

The news has the potential to fuel long-standing rumours of Arctic Monkeys headlining next year’s edition of Glastonbury, which will be taking place from June 21-25 at Somerset’s Worthy Farm. A source told The Sun that the band have already started preparing for their headline show, which would be their third time playing the festival. They last headlined the Pyramid Stage in 2013.

“The lads have signed on the dotted line and will return to the Pyramid Stage next June,” the source said. “It is really special for them to be doing a hat-trick on that stage and it is something they have wanted to do for a while.”

Another source has since told The Sun that Eminem is reportedly also in “advanced talks” to headline Glastonbury 2023. This would mark the rapper’s first ever appearance on Worthy Farm.

“Eminem is wanted for a huge slot at Glastonbury and has been in talks for yonks,” the source said. “His dates all line up and if they can get him on board, it will be the first time he has ever played at the festival. Eminem is one of the greatest rappers on the planet and to have him down on the farm would be incredible.”

Elsewhere, it has also been suggested that The Spice Girls could top the bill on the Pyramid Stage. An insider speaking to MailOnline said that the girl group were in “advanced negotiations” to play the festival, and the possibility remains that they could be joined by Victoria Beckham. Beckham hasn’t played with the group since the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, and the remaining four members reunited for a stadium tour in 2019 without her.

Glastonbury confirmed the ticket prices for next year’s festival earlier this week, with tickets costing £335 each, plus a £5 booking fee. They will go on sale next month.

Jack Harlow to appear on ‘Saturday Night Live’ as both host and musical guest

Jack Harlow will return to Saturday Night Live this month, appearing on the show’s October 29 episode as both its host and musical guest.

  • READ MORE: Jack Harlow – ‘Come Home The Kids Miss You’ review: storytelling charm and filler tracks

The announcement was made during last week’s SNL, which also saw the show’s musical guest – fellow rapper Megan The Stallion – double as its host. It’ll mark the show’s return to NBC after a week off, shutting down rumours that Taylor Swift would make a surprise appearance this Saturday (October 22).

Harlow made his SNL debut last March, performing a medley of his singles ‘Tyler Herro’ and ‘Whats Poppin’. He also teamed up with Pete Davidson to deliver a skit parodying Eminem.

Harlow is currently riding the high of his second album, ‘Come Home The Kids Miss You’, which arrived back in May via Generation Now and Atlantic. It was supported by the singles ‘Nail Tech’ and ‘First Class’.

In a three star review, NME’s Kyann-Sian Williams highlighted the album’s “commercial-sounding tracks”, writing: “On an album full of soppy exploration of Harlow’s love life and what it’s like to be a rap superstar, these chirpy tunes liven up a tracklist that can otherwise be melancholy and monotonous.”

Next month, Harlow will embark on a 14-date tour of Europe and the UK. The run will begin in Birmingham on Wednesday November 2, wrapping up in Milan on Monday November 21. More info and tickets for the tour can be found here.

Watch Judas Priest perform ‘Genocide’ for first time in 40 years

Judas Priest surprised fans by playing ‘Genocide’ live this week (October 13) for the first time in 40 years.

The band launched the latest US leg of their ’50 Heavy Metal Years Tour’ in Wallingford, Connecticut earlier this week (October 13th) and performed ‘Genocide’ to the surprise of many fans in attendance.

The set list featured fan-favourites as well as other rarities together with songs from the band’s acclaimed 1982 album ‘Screaming For Vengeance’, which turns 40 this year.

Check out the moment the band played ‘Genocide’ below and view the full setlist:

Judas Priest Setlist:
‘The Hellion / Electric Eye’
‘Riding on the Wind’
‘Heading Out to the Highway’
‘Jawbreaker’
‘Never the Heroes’
‘Beyond the Realms of Death’
‘Judas Rising’
‘You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’’
‘Steeler’
‘Between the Hammer and the Anvil’
‘Halls of Valhalla’
‘Firepower’
‘Genocide’
‘Screaming for Vengeance’
‘Hell Bent for Leather’
‘Breaking the Law’
‘Living After Midnight’

Recently, the band’s Rob Halford said he was “a bit pissed” that Judas Priest weren’t honoured as one of the main performer inductees for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame this year.

The metal band will accept the Award for Musical Excellence at this year’s ceremony, which will take place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California on November 5. The gong was first introduced in 2000 as the ‘Sideman’ category; it became the Award for Musical Excellence 10 years later.

Joel Peresman, the president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, previously said: “This award gives us flexibility to dive into some things and recognise some people who might not ordinarily get recognised.”

But in a recent interview with AZ Central, Halford expressed his frustration over not being listed among this year’s main Rock Hall honourees which include Eminem, Duran Duran and Dolly Parton.

“I was a bit pissed. At the end of the day, does it matter?” the frontman said. “Some days, I go, ‘No, it doesn’t matter. We’re in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Be grateful. Shut the hell up’. And then there are other days where I’m like, ‘God damn, why did they give us the Musical Excellence Award?’ Because it sounds very, you know, grandiose. ‘The Musical Excellence Award, reserved for blah, blah, blah’.”

Halford continued: “I just felt a little bit like, ‘Well, [Black] Sabbath got this [as performers in 2006]. So why can’t we have that?’ Not that I’m jealous of Sabbath. I’m just talking about this tag that they give it…Why do they put these tags on the damn thing? Why don’t they go, “Welcome. You’re in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” and leave it at that.”

He added: “It’s as though we got this far. We’re, like, one step away, you know? I know it’s silly, but it’s just frustrating.”

Back in May, Judas Priest confirmed that their former guitarist K.K. Downing will join them at their 2022 Rock Hall induction.

John Sykes, the chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Foundation, said in a statement that each inductee “had a profound impact on the sound of youth culture and helped change the course of rock ‘n’ roll”.

Kid Cudi says he’s “nearing the end” of his music career

Kid Cudi has said that he is “nearing the end” of his music career, adding that he is thinking about becoming a kindergarten teacher instead.

Speaking on a new episode of Hot Ones, which you can see below, Cudi revealed that he didn’t know how much longer he would continue making music and that he had an alternative career path in mind.

The rapper said he was “kinda nearing the end on all things Kid Cudi.” He quoted other rappers including Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Eminem and more saying he didn’t think he would have the same longevity at these artists.

“I feel like, I don’t have what they have,” Cudi said. “I just don’t know if I want to do music and drop albums for much longer.”

He continued: “I’m really curious to see what else I can do. I was thinking about this, this is like a wacky idea I had years ago,” he said. “It would be cool to one day be a kindergarten teacher. Just do that for a couple years.”

“…When I’m like 50, for like 10 years was a kindergarten teacher, but infect the youth with that freshness. Then those kids will sprinkle the freshness to the world.”
You can watch the interview in full above.

Recently, Cudi appeared on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, delivering a performance of his single ‘Willing To Trust’ with Ty Dolla $ign from new album ‘Entergalactic’.

Cudi’s last album before that was 2020’s ‘Man On The Moon III: The Chosen’, the third instalment in the Cleveland rapper’s ‘MOTM’ trilogy. In a four-star review, NME‘s Will Lavin called the release “a cinematic masterstroke that electrifies the senses at every turn”.

Rihanna says she’s “nervous” but “excited” about Super Bowl Halftime Show

Rihanna has said she is “nervous” but “excited” about headlining the Super Bowl 2023 Halftime Show.

Announced late last month, the forthcoming performance will mark the pop star’s first live appearance since 2018. Rihanna’s eighth and most recent studio album, ‘Anti’, came out in 2016.

  • READ MORE: Rihanna’s Super Bowl show will be an exhilarating reminder of her all-round brilliance

Earlier this week, TMZ asked Rihanna how she was feeling about making her Super Bowl debut. “I’m nervous but I’m excited,” she replied. Pressed on whether her partner A$AP Rocky could appear as a special guest, the singer responded: “Maybe, girl.”

The Super Bowl LVII is due to take place at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on on February 12, 2023. It will be the first year that Apple Music will serve as a sponsor for the Halftime Show, replacing the NFL’s long-time partner Pepsi.

“We look forward to collaborating with Rihanna, Roc Nation and Apple Music to bring fans another historic Halftime Show performance.”

Roc Nation founder Jay-Z, meanwhile, called Rihanna “a generational talent”.

Kendrick Lamar announces 10th anniversary reissue for ‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D City’

Kendrick Lamar has announced a reissue of his acclaimed second album, ‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D City’, celebrating its 10th anniversary with new physical version featuring a minimalistic cover and unique colourways.

Physical copies of the new edition will start shipping out on October 21, one day shy of the album’s initial release date in 2012. It’ll be available on CD, matte grey cassette and two-disc vinyl (in a translucent “black ice” pressing), with the lattermost option also available to buy with the original cover art.

The new cover takes the image of the black van shown on the front of the album’s original deluxe edition (released alongside the standard album on October 22, 2012), isolates it, and places it against a darker black background.

At the time of writing, the release doesn’t look to feature any bonus tracks or additional material. The original deluxe edition included three extra songs, while additional releases by Target, iTunes and Spotify expanded the 12-song tracklist out to 17 (each with unique bonus tracks). Between all five existing deluxe editions of ‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D City’, there’s a total of 10 possible bonus tracks that could be included on this reissue.

See the new cover art for the 10th anniversary edition of ‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D City’ below, then find pre-orders here.

‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D City’ earned a three-star review from NME upon its initial release, with the record called “a big-budget reminder that [Lamar] hasn’t forgotten his roots”. In 2020, it became the longest-charting hip-hop album in US chart history.

Lamar is currently touring in support of his fifth studio album, ‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers’, which arrived back in May. It earned a five-star review from NME, and received praise from the likes of Lorde, Pharrell Williams, Madonna, producer DJ Dahi, Eminem and Tyler, The Creator.

In August, Sounwave – a collaborator and producer of Lamar’s – revealed that he and the rapper had begun working on the follow-up to ‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers’. In the meantime, the European leg of Lamar’s ‘Big Steppers Tour’, will begin next weekend. He’ll perform 16 shows across the continent, as well as 10 in the UK.

The rapper will then conclude the year by touring Australia and New Zealand in December. See the full list of dates here, with tickets for Europe and the UK available here, and for Australia and New Zealand here.

Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre to collaborate once more on new album, ‘Missionary’

Snoop Dogg has revealed he’s working once again with Dr. Dre, revealing a new album titled ‘Missionary’.

In a conversation with Stephen A. Smith on the K[no]w Mercy podcast, Snoop confirmed the name of the forthcoming project, which will see Dre handle production duties.

Friday’s (September 30) episode heard Snoop say: “Me and Dr. Dre have been working on an album for the past two months.”

The rapper also revealed that the album would be released in November (though an exact date was not given) via Death Row/Aftermath.

The pair’s work on ‘Missionary’ marks their first time collaborating in 29 years. They first linked up for Snoop Dogg’s 1993 debut ‘Doggystyle’, which Dre produced. November also marks the 30th anniversary of that album’s release.

When asked by Smith why he chose the name ‘Missionary’, Snoop replied humorously: “The first album was ‘Doggystyle’…”

The pair also talked about Snoop’s recent acquisition of Death Row Records, who released his debut. “I was looking to get my masters back from ‘Doggystyle’,” Snoop explained. “During the process, they were – the people that had it – were charging more for the masters than for Death Row. So I had to ask myself, ‘Do I want the masters now, or do I want to go back and get that legacy?'”

Adding of the label’s legacy: “Death Row Records should be the most prolific, dominant, business-minded companies to come out of the West Coast, that comes and stays with you for a lifetime.”

The news comes just a few weeks after Snoop and Dr. Dre were pictured in the studio alongside Eminem. Back in August, Em shared an image of the three rap heavyweights posing in front of a mixing desk and a large set of speakers, alongside the caption: “Just a few bros.. hangin out.”

Earlier this year, Dr. Dre produced and headlined the Super Bowl Halftime Show. As well as performing alongside Snoop, Dr. Dre took to the stage with the likes of 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige and more.

Dr. Dre offers advice for Rihanna’s Super Bowl performance: “Put the right people around you, and have fun”

Dr. Dre has offered up advice for Rihanna, who will be headlining the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show next February.

Following news of Rihanna’s performance, Dre shared his thoughts as part of an interview with Apple Music 1 host Ebro Darden. He began full of praise for the Barbadian singer: “I’m a super fan of Rihanna. I can’t wait to see what she’s going to do.”

“I just like her and what she does, and her get down, and how she approaches her artistry and the whole nine. It’s fantastic. She has the opportunity to really blow us away. I know we set the bar extremely high,” he added.

“Put the right people around you, and have fun,” advised Dre on the key to success. “That’s basically what it is, making sure you have the right creative people around you. She might want to look into some of the people that we used to do our show.”

Dr. Dre, who was the headliner for last year’s Super Bowl halftime show, boasted a star-studded line-up for his performance. Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, and 50 Cent all appeared as special guest performers. In the interview, the rapper further touched upon his nervousness due to the scale of the event.

“All of these people came through for me, and everybody was extremely enthusiastic about the show. We had a good time, although it’s a lot of things and a lot of people you have to depend on. You’re talking about at least 3000 people that you have to depend on to get this show right for 13 minutes,” Dre said.

“So it is an extreme amount of pressure, but it’s fun at the same time. When it’s done, it’s like goosebumps, bro. I got goosebumps, especially from the reaction that we got from the show, and especially being able to do the show with all of my friends,” he concluded about the experience.

Rihanna first teased her Super Bowl appearance on Instagram, with a post featuring an NFL-themed football, before her performance was officially confirmed by Roc Nation. Super Bowl LVII will be taking place on February 12, 2023, at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Apple Music will be serving as the half-time show’s sponsor, replacing the event’s longtime sponsor Pepsi.

The singer originally turned down a slot at the 2019 Super Bowl, in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick. The show was ultimately headlined by Maroon 5.

Rihanna’s last live performance was at the 2018 Grammy Awards, where she delivered a rendition of ‘Wild Thoughts’ with DJ Khaled and Bryson Tiller. The Barbadian singer’s last album was 2016’s ‘Anti’.

Meanwhile, earlier in May, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky welcomed their first child together.

Rihanna confirmed to headline Super Bowl 2023 halftime show

Rihanna has confirmed she will headline the Super Bowl 2023 halftime show next February, marking her first time headlining the event.

In addition to a statement released by Halftime Show executive producers Roc Nation, Rihanna herself confirmed the news in a post to her Instagram earlier today (Sunday September 25), sharing a photo of an NFL-branded football.

Roc Nation founder Jay-Z called Rihanna “a generational talent”. “[She is] A woman of humble beginnings who has surpassed expectations at every turn,” the rapper said. “A person born on the small island of Barbados who became one of the most prominent artists ever. Self-made in business and entertainment.”

NFL Head of Music Seth Dudowsky said they were “thrilled” to welcome Rihanna as the Halftime Show’s headliner. “Rihanna is a once-in-a-generation artist who has been a cultural force throughout her career,” Dudowsky said. “We look forward to collaborating with Rihanna, Roc Nation and Apple Music to bring fans another historic Halftime Show performance.”

The Super Bowl LVII takes place on February 12, 2023, at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. It will be the first year that Apple Music will serve as a sponsor for the halftime show, replacing the NFL’s long-time partner, Pepsi.

Announced by the NFL last week at midnight (via Variety), the new partnership prompted speculation that Taylor Swift – whose forthcoming album is called ‘Midnight’ – was being considered as a potential headliner.

Those rumours were later reported to be false, Swift said to have turned down the offer because she “didn’t want to perform until she finished re-recording all of her first six albums”.

In 2018, Rihanna was offered the chance to headline the 2019 Halftime Show. She turned the offer down in a bid to show solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, who was the first NFL player to take a knee in protest against police brutality in 2016.

Notably, Rihanna hasn’t released an album since 2016, when she dropped her eighth studio album ‘Anti’. The artist hasn’t performed live since her appearance at the 2018 Grammy Awards.

Last year’s Super Bowl was headlined by Dr. Dre with special guest performers Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg and Mary J. Blige.

Taylor Swift reportedly turns down 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show

Taylor Swift has reportedly turned down the chance to perform the 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show.

The high-profile slot – which was taken in 2022 by an all-star cast of Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar – will take place in Arizona on February 12 next year, and recent reports hinted that Swift was set to perform.

However, new reports in TMZ and People suggest that the singer was asked to perform at the show, but has declined the offer in order to continue re-recording her back catalogue.

In 2019, Swift confirmed her plans to re-record songs from her first six records in a bid to take control over her music once again after music manager Scooter Braun and his media holding company, Ithaca Holdings LLC, acquired Swift’s old label, Big Machine Label Group, back in June 2019.

So far, she has released ‘Fearless (Taylor’s Version)’ and ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’ with a host of outtakes and unreleased songs, while also sharing a re-recorded version of ‘1989’ track ‘Wildest’s Dreams’ as part of a trailer for DreamWorks film Spirit Untamed.

Alongside the continuation of the re-recording project, Swift will also release 10th studio album ‘Midnights’ on October 21, which was announced during a surprise appearance from the singer at the MTV VMAs last month.

Swift detailed ‘Midnights’ in the early hours of August 29, after making a surprise announcement at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards less than an hour earlier. While accepting the second of three awards she bagged on the night – Video of the Year for ‘All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)’ – Swift revealed: “My brand new album comes out October 21. I will tell you more at midnight.”

On what to expect from its themes, she wrote: “This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching – hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve… we’ll meet ourselves.”

Apart from its thematic concept, few other details are currently known about the singer-songwriter’s 10th album, but she recently revealed that frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff worked on the record.

In the run-up to the album’s release, she has been teasing certain details about the record, including two track titles so far – ‘Vigilante Shit’ and ‘Mastermind’.

Swift also revealed to fans that the back covers for different vinyl versions of ‘Midnights’ come together to make a clockface. Over the past month, Swift has been detailing a host of different editions of the LP version of the album. First came the ‘Jade Green’, ‘Blood Moon’ and ‘Mahogany’ editions of ‘Midnights’, all of which sport exclusive colour schemes, artwork and imagery.

She then revealed a ‘Lavender’ version of the album as part of an ongoing collaboration with Target, then taking to Instagram to reveal that all four collectible editions of the album come with specific back covers that, when placed together, make an entire clockface.

Emmy-winning music director wants to take Dr. Dre’s Super Bowl Halftime Show on tour

Adam Blackstone, the Emmy-winning music director who worked on Dr. Dre‘s Super Bowl Halftime Show, has said that he wants to take the star-studded performance on tour.

Dre headlined the performance at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California back in February, in which he performed alongside Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, Anderson .Paak and 50 Cent.

The Halftime Show sparked a surge in subsequent sales of Dre and Eminem’s albums, while Dre, Eminem and Snoop were all pictured in the studio together recently.

Speaking to Variety after he picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Music Direction for his work on the Halftime Show, Blackstone said that his vision for the performance was for it to be “a great music show”.

“It wasn’t about Black or white. It wasn’t about hip-hop versus pop music,” he said. “I pride myself on making that a great music show that will continue to show the legacy of each of those artists.”

Blackstone added: “People can’t be mad at me saying, ‘You should have added that’. Mary could do 12 minutes by herself. So could Snoop and Dre. It was my job to curate a playlist, and you get your favourite artist for 90 seconds.”

Looking to the future, Blackstone said that he was now “calling out” Dre, Eminem, Snoop, Kendrick, Blige, .Paak and 50 Cent, adding: “Let’s take this on the road.”

Last month, Dre was pictured in the studio with Diddy – with the latter saying that the experience was a “dream come true”.

Watch Kendrick Lamar’s six-minute ‘We Cry Together’ short film

Kendrick Lamar has released the previously theatre-exclusive short film that accompanies ‘We Cry Together’, his collaborative track with actress Taylour Paige from ‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers’ – making it available to view online nearly two-and-a-half years after it was shot.

  • READ MORE: Kendrick Lamar live at Glastonbury 2022: thought-provoking rapper takes the Pyramid Stage

The film was directed by Lamar himself alongside Jake Schreier and Dave Free, with Adam Newport-Berra serving as its cinematographer. It sees Lamar and Paige (best known for her starring role in Zola) take the role of a couple deeply immersed in an inflammatory argument, trading callous insults and personal attacks as they strut around their house, eventually losing track of their fight and having make-up sex on a couch.

The song itself notably eschews Lamar’s usual work by being framed solely around spoken-word slam poetry – as Billboard pointed out, those vocals were tracked live-in-camera for the film, which was shot in a single, continuous take on a soundstage.

Have a look at the film in its entirety below:

Originally filmed in March of 2020, We Cry Together screened theatrically in June, with seven showings – one each day between Friday June 3 and Thursday 9 – held at the Laemmle Royal Theater in West LA.

Each screening of the film reportedly took place under the watch of a security detail, and attendees were not permitted to enter the cinema with their phones. As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, most of those who sat in on the screenings were family and friends of the film’s crew, although tickets for each were also made available for around 20 members of the public.

Because it was screened theatrically, the film will be eligible for competition at next year’s Academy Awards, qualifying for nominations in the Best Live Action Short category.

‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers’, Lamar’s fifth studio album, was released back in May. It earned a five-star review from NME, wherein Kyann-Sian Williams called it “a cathartic, soul-baring autobiography”. Meanwhile, the album has also received praise from the likes of Lorde, Pharrell Williams, Madonna, producer DJ Dahi, Eminem and Tyler, The Creator.

Last month, Sounwave – a collaborator and producer of Lamar’s – revealed that he and the rapper had begun working on the follow-up to ‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers’.

In the meantime, Lamar is currently underway with ‘The Big Steppers Tour’, with its North American leg wrapping up in two weeks. It will then head to Europe in October, where Lamar will perform 16 shows in the region, as well as 10 in the UK. Lamar will conclude the year by touring Australia and New Zealand in December. Dr. Dre says ICU doctors prepared for his death after he suffered a brain aneurysm

Dr. Dre has opened up about the near-death experience he faced at the start of last year, when he found himself in an LA hospital’s intensive care unit after suffering a brain aneurysm.

The legendary rapper and producer faced his health scare at the start of last year, when on January 4, he was admitted to the ICU at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Dre assured fans a day later that he was “doing great”, however he would stay in the ICU for two weeks. During that time, he explained in a new interview for the Workout The Doubt podcast, doctors welcomed in his family because they feared he would die from the incident.

“They weren’t allowing anybody to come up – meaning visitors or family or anything like that – because of COVID,” Dre told host Dolvett Quince. “But they allowed my family to come in [and] I found out later, they called them up so they could say their last goodbyes, because they thought I was outta here. I didn’t know it was that serious… Nobody told me, I had no idea. That was crazy.”

Dre went on to speak about the hourly procedures involved in his recovery, where “because of what was going on in my brain, they had to wake me up every hour, on the hour, for two weeks to do these tests [that were] basically like sobriety tests – touch your nose, rub your heel on your calf and all that shit.”

Though he admitted to feeling incredibly tired throughout his ICU stint – “as soon as [the doctors would] leave, I would try to go to sleep because I knew they were coming back in the next hour” – Dre pointed out he never worried about the potential of any serious complications, let alone death. “I never felt like I was in trouble,” he asserted to Quince. “I felt like, ‘OK, I’m just going through [a] procedure, and I’m ready to go home. I’m hungry.’ I didn’t eat for two weeks… That was a really crazy experience.”

Dre was released from hospital by January 15 last year, and was spotted in the studio just a few days later. Within a month, Dre had turned his experience into the basis for a new song. His first live performance since he suffered the aneurysm came in February of this year, where he appeared alongside Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent and Anderson .Paak for this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show.

While he was in hospital, Dre’s house was targeted by burglars, leading to four people being arrested after they set off Dre’s infrared cameras. Meanwhile, Dre received support from colleagues like Ice Cube and Ice-T.

The rapper opened up about his treatment last June, saying in an interview that the aneurysm itself was “a really weird thing” because he’d never experienced any contributing symptoms. He said: “I’ve never had high blood pressure And I’ve always been a person that has always taken care of my health. But there’s something that happens for some reason with black men and high blood pressure, and I never saw that coming. But I’m taking care of myself.”

In July of this year, Dre revealed that he’d spent the last two years working on at least a dozen albums’ worth of material, telling Busta Rhymes in a video: “N****, I [made] 247 songs during the pandemic, and then we paused and did a whole album with Marsha Ambrosius. And then we came back, and … I did the Grand Theft Auto shit, and now we’re working on my n**** Snoop.”

The “Grand Theft Auto shit” that Dre mentioned refers to the six songs he made for the Grand Theft Auto Online expansion The Contract, which was released last December and featured Dre as a character. For the songs – which were later compiled into an EP that landed on streaming services this February – Dre collaborated with the likes of Eminem, Anderson .Paak, Rick Ross and Snoop Dogg.

A new album from Dre was rumoured to be on the cards for last December, after Grandmaster Flash claimed a few months prior that it “will change the game”. Work on that record – which Flavor Flav has also claimed he will be a guest on – was reportedly finished in November of 2020. According to Diamond D, the album could have a runtime of around two hours. The album is, of course, yet to be formally announced.

That said, Snoop Dogg revealed earlier this month that he was working on new material with Dre. The pair were later pictured in the studio alongside Eminem.

One part of the track sees The Game imitating Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ flow, with the former rapping: “Oh, he goes platinum / And, oh, I’m on the ‘Math with him / He got all the Blackest friends / He wants to be African / Me, left for dead on the ‘Doctor’s Advocate’ / Dre never executive-produced it, I just imagined it.”

Speaking in a video message to his Instagram followers on Sunday (August 14), The Game thanked his fans for their support following the album release.

Earlier this week, 50 Cent responded to claims made by The Game that he was in fact the writer behind 50’s 2003 hit ‘What Up Gangsta’.

50 Cent responds to The Game’s claim that he wrote ‘What Up Gangsta’

50 Cent has responded to claims from The Game that he was in fact the writer behind 50’s 2003 hit ‘What Up Gangsta’.

The song originally appeared on 50’s 2003 debut album ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin”. The following year, 50 Cent wrote a number of songs for The Game’s project ‘The Documentary’.

In a conversation back in March, The Game’s associate Wack 100 revealed that The Game had claimed to have written ‘What Up Gangsta’.

Asked about 50 Cent’s contributions to ‘The Documentary’, Wack said: “I’m going to speak on something you don’t never speak on,” while reciting the track’s chorus: “‘What up cuz, what up Blood, what up Gangsta.”

He added: “Who you think wrote that? I’mma leave it alone … Bro just don’t be beating his chest.”

Referencing the claim in a new interview on The Breakfast Club, 50 Cent said: “[The Game] said he wrote ‘What Up Gangsta’. I’m like, ‘C’mon on, bro. You wasn’t even around when we did that. That was before you even came into the picture’.

“We didn’t even know who he was until after. There’s a point when you [reach] desperation and you’ll say anything.”

Last Friday (August 12), The Game released his new album ‘Drillmatic: Heart vs. Mind’, on which he dissed 50 Cent and Eminem on a track called ‘The Black Slim Shady’.

The track opens with a skit led by an Uber driver named Matthew, who’s revealed later in the song to be the brother of Stan, the subject of Eminem’s titular 2000 hit. With incendiary bars, The Game delivers a litany of deep references to Eminem’s career, catalogue and personal life, taking aim at his history of addiction, his family, and the debate over whether Eminem is guilty of cultural appropriation.

In a recent interview, The Game teased a future diss track against Eminem, telling UPROXX: “Because 50 [Cent] can’t rap, so I’ve gotta go a level up and challenge the better rapper… Nobody really takes shots at Eminem off this pre-conceived notion that he’s better than everybody. Well, I want action, and I want it today.”

Back in March, The Game hit out at Eminem during his appearance on the Drink Champs podcast, claiming he’s a better rapper and would happily go up against him in a VERZUZ battle.
