Xtine Turns the Lights On With “Sirens”
Most singles arrive with a tidy origin story attached. Xtine‘s “Sirens” arrives with a confession. The singer-songwriter has been clear about what the song is about: a mentor she trusted when she was young, a relationship that felt like love while she was in it, and the slow, brutal process of understanding years later that it was manipulation. That is a heavy thing to hang on one track. It’s also exactly why “Sirens” deserves your attention.
Start with the title, which does more work than most entire choruses. A siren is the sound that tells you to get out of the way. A siren is also the creature that sings sailors onto the rocks. Xtine uses both meanings at once, and the image she builds from them is devastatingly simple. The warning signs were there the whole time. To a kid inside that dynamic, they sounded like someone calling her name. I’ve read a lot of artists try to explain how this kind of control works on a young person, and few have done it in a single word.
The emotional seed of the song is a dark, empty classroom. Xtine describes it as a place where the rest of the world seemed to vanish, where she felt safe with the one person who was making her unsafe. She couldn’t tell anyone. She walked back into ordinary life every day carrying it alone. Her phrase for what the song finally does is turning the lights on in that room, and it’s hard to come up with a better summary of what a song like this is for.
Musically, she’s aiming high. Her reference points are Sia, Sleeping At Last and Björk, which is an ambitious and slightly unruly trio. From Sia she borrows melodies that climb like anthems while something wounded sits underneath. From Sleeping At Last she takes the orchestral sweep, the way strings can blow a private feeling up to the size of a landscape. Björk is the most interesting influence of the three, because she gives Xtine permission to let parts of the track sound broken and physical. A subject this ugly has no business being rendered entirely in soft focus, and I respect that she seems to know it.
By her own account, the arrangement builds as the song goes, the strings swelling while her voice hardens from fragile into confrontational. She says she felt the change happen in the studio, the moment she realized she was singing past the person who hurt her. That shift is the real story of this release. Her debut, All The Ways We Loved, lived inside the hurt. It was honest, though it was honesty wrapped in metaphor, the kind that lets a listener feel everything without knowing quite what happened. “Sirens” drops that cover. Anger shows up. So does clarity. So does a stubborn sense of survival.
The most affecting part of her account might be what she refuses to do. She won’t rewrite her younger self. She admits that she really did believe it was love, that she really did feel chosen. Plenty of artists would sand that part down, because it complicates the clean victim narrative people expect. Xtine keeps it in, and the song is braver and truer for it. Admitting how real the feelings were doesn’t excuse a thing. It just tells the whole story.
There’s a fascinating subplot here too. At 12, Xtine reached out to Sia, who went on to become a warm, encouraging presence in her early life. You might expect the two mentor figures to bleed together in a song like this. She shuts that idea down firmly. Sia’s support came free, with no secrets and no debts. If anything, Xtine says, having one healthy example of an adult believing in her made the other relationship easier to see clearly in hindsight. It’s a generous, thoughtful distinction, and one young artists in particular should hear.
Then comes the live show she’s imagining, which is pure theater. She describes a room so quiet you can hear people breathing, followed by a full eruption, with the crowd eventually shouting the words back because by then they understand them. Her ideal ending is a few seconds of stunned silence before anyone thinks to clap. That’s a big promise. Plenty of artists talk this way and never deliver. Given how committed she sounds, I’d want to be in the room to find out.
The fair question with a song like this is whether the story overshadows the music, whether the courage of the subject ends up carrying the track. That’s a risk with any record built on a disclosure this personal. Still, the instincts Xtine describes, the dark melody, the cinematic build, the willingness to sound strange and uncomfortable, are the right ones for the material. Her ambition here feels earned.
And she isn’t done. Xtine says she has more songs that point at the truth just as directly, and she plans to keep exploring the dark, theatrical world “Sirens” opened. She can’t go back to that classroom and warn the kid sitting in it. What she can do is write the song that might have shown that kid where the door was. On “Sirens,” she’s done exactly that, and she sounds like an artist just getting started.
